Imagine for a second you had a best friend. You did everything with them, and loved every second. Then one day that friend disappeared. You grieved for a very long time, and after years and years you finally accepted that they were gone. A part of you was gone with them.
Then one day in 2015, you got a letter in the mail. It was handwritten, and you recognized the handwriting. You read each word with baited breath. It couldn’t be. You wished it would be many times, and you don’t think you have it in you anymore to have your heart broken again.
And then you get to the end of the letter. It said: “Sorry I took so long to come back. But I’m on my way now. Be patient, cause it might take a bit of time before I can see you again. But I can’t wait to relive our adventures together.” With tears in your eyes, you see the last line, and the weight you’ve shouldered for years suddenly melts away, leaving nothing but pure elation.
    “Can’t wait for our reunion.”

Much respect that you took the time out to play the original, I'm sure you were not disappointed, i feel bad for the younger generations who never got to experience those times and the games of that era, it really was the golden age of gaming in many ways, I'm curious as to how you felt about it once you reached the end, personally I felt strongly against the remake because no matter how much love they give the game, its a very slippery slope, they could very easily end up butchering what many consider the GOAT game including myself, if they change the narrative too much for example or tamper with a main character too much just to name a couple, there's just so many things that could go wrong, it would have been a perfectly safe bet to make absolute minute changes and just make it look amazing

FF7 came out shortly after my parents split when I was 6 or 7. My dad was raising me by himself. I recall him bringing the game home with the strategy guide in hand. I watched him play it from beginning to end with the guide in my lap and feeding him information which amounted to me pointing at pictures because I was too young to fully understand what was going on.
I would periodically come back to the game to play it just to remind myself of Dads play through and to listen to the music.

The ost and the fact that you had to fight your summons before you could use them in battle were the ONLY aspects that appealed to me besides the look of the main protagonist and his Gunblade. Seifer can go suck it, but I loved Squall. As for Rinoa, she was basically a combination of Aerith and Tifa from VII. Not saying that's a bad thing. I'm just calling her out. I remember when I first saw it too. My older brother had always been into all types of games and he had been playing FFVII as soon as it was available. At 6 years old I fell in love, and the next year when I was 7 (1998) I took it on and butchered the game worse than I could ever replicate. It was such a challenge and it took me forever. I will never forget the first time I made it to the bottom of the northern crater to the final boss fight, I cried. It took me months and months to get there. I never give up on anything now, and despite this not having been my first RPG, or game, it was the first I cared about, and inspired me to become a novelist to tell grand stories. I've never stopped gaming since, returning to my roots yearly. I am so familiar with the original game i'm sure my first play through of the remake will be too emotional, and i'll have to replay it to be as methodical as I am.

Max: “... you felt like you were there with them...”
I remember being at a Wallmart or K Mart in the 90’s I came across a strategy guide for FFVII, the picture was epic. Here’s was some hero holding an giant sword confronting a futuristic tower, hidden within the white mystic, it was probably the most epic thing I ever saw. So I bought the guide and then the game, I thought the majority of it was going to be in the city, and realizing it was only a tiny fracture of the adventure. With a cast of misfits of various intent and aspirations, you experience their struggles, laughter, frustrations, hope, loss and ultimately redemption through lore that your mundane mind somehow could comprehend. No game has given me such awe in scale, and no game since then has. I don’t like RPG’s, I was more into games like Megaman and Doom... FFVII was neither of these things. I’m excited for Doom Eternal, but not as excited as playing FFVII again, even if it was a moment of it.
Max to me embodies our kind of love for FFVII, because like many of us, we are no fans of RPG’s, the idea of patiently waiting for your enemy to hurt you is silly even to this day, but he’s like that friend you know who played with you, grinded with you and fought with you. When a game creates a fan base of people who are not even interested in the genre... now that’s something, but when a game creates a bond between strangers...the fans themselves, well that’s something else.
Is this game gonna be great? I don’t know and don’t care, all I want is to relive the adventure we all had when it came out, now that thought is something we can all embrace whatever it brings.

Max, you re 100% correct. I've said this before when asked why FF7 is my favorite game of all time. I won't argue that it's the best game ever made or even the best FF game. But FF7 was the game that changed me on a personal level. Before it, I played games like Sonic, Mario, Earthworm Jim, and other games (all good games). But FF7 wasn't just a game where you ran left and shot or jumped on enemies. No, FF7 had characters that were actual people that changed as they went through the story. And that story wasn't just "beat the bad guy and save the world" it straight up ripped out your heart. The gameplay was a whole new experience for me. The graphics were revolutionary at the time. And my God the music. The music is so Goddamn good that I am as excited for the Remake versions of the music as I am for the actual game.
FF7 wasn't just a game. It was an event. It was something truly special. A case of everything going right. The right game, on the right platform, at the right time. And I can't wait to relive it with the Remake.

I got into final fantasy when I was about 11 when I saw my uncle play FF13 Lightning returns. I remember being so blown away by the graphics and music and I wanted to know more about it, so I would go to my uncle's room and dig around, looking through his final fantasy games and I'd look at the covers and ask him questions. He showed me almost every final fantasy and the plot till he started letting me play for myself, we had a PS2 so I was able to play the older classics, and I loved them so much, I played final fantasy 24/7, Final Fantasy VII was my favorite.
I'm always happy to find others who love FF. Soon after the PS2 and the games were passed down to me and I TREASURE them, everything about FF makes me so emotional, The soundtrack, Plot, characters and gameplay. To this day I'm very happy to discover final fantasy and I'm still keeping up with the series and trying to collect anything from the series and it makes me happy to see others who love the games as much as I do

I rarely got past the guard scorpion and did not read well enough to get the dialogue. Even so, I was initially engrossed by the music, the environments, and the characters and even then it was my favorite game. I used to be so jealous of cloud as a kid. The game got even better when I was able to read well enough to get the gravity of the plot. I ended up getting to shinra at the age of 10 and then got stuck on another boss. I also wasn't able to get past that part until I was 14 because the disc was too scratched so I got it buffed and got to the second disc and the same thing happened. I’m gonna be honest, I was introduced to final fantasy with XV. From that statement, it’s fairly obvious that I’m on the younger side. I was around thirteen when I played XV, I wasn’t into role playing games at the time, I knew they were cool, but I wasn’t into them. I saw that XV was being marketed as “A Final Fantasy For Fans And First Timers.” I was interested, simply in the name, Final Fantasy. I got the game, and played through all of it. Looking back at it now that I’ve gone back and played the other games, I realize it’s not that great. But, nonetheless, the game left such a lasting impact on me. It got me hooked into Final Fantasy. It was the first game to ever incite emotional reaction from me, I cried at so many different points in that game. When I caught wind of the Final Fantasy VII remake, I started to look deeper into it. When I did that, I saw just how much VII meant to so. . . so many people. So, I planned to get it. Pre ordered it when I could, and waited. The game came out exactly a week after my seventeenth birthday. VII Remake is the only thing I’ve ever stayed up for a midnight release of. When I started the game up, and heard Prelude play in the title screen, I started to tear up. I genuinely don’t know why, but I did, I felt such fond memories flood back into my mind, even though I never played the original VII. Even when playing through the game, at times I got so emotional, and just cried looking at things, and listening to the music. I don’t know what it is, but. . . I felt a connection to the game playing through it. I know, it sounds incredibly stupid to say, but, I feel such a strong connection to it. I know that it’s not the full game, and that it’s being split up into pieces, and I genuinely don’t care, I just want to put my money down on the other parts already. I don’t know where I was going with this. But, I feel like the remake of this game can, and will have the same effect on the younger generation now that it did to people when it originally released.

On a practical viewpoint, when you as a child got a hold of FF7 for the playstation and saw how Fn huge the case was, and that it was several discs ( still the most discs for a video game ) ...you just had this astonishment and awe for what you were about to get yourself into. My first "playthrough" of FFVII was me watching my older brother play the game back in 1997, and even though FFIV was actually my first FF game, FFVII was what made me truly fall in love with the franchise. Ever since then, my brother and I have spent every FF mainline release sitting in front of the TV together, passing the controller back and forth and experiencing the story together, or in the case of FFXIV, playing online together. Even when I had severe covid on the release day of Remake in 2020, I pulled myself out of bed and we sat on opposite sides of the room - only he played while I watched to prevent spreading through the controller so we could still safely enjoy the game together.
(I'm post-Rebirth, so please don't read any further if you haven't finished yet.) In 2024 I'm coming back to this video because as a diehard fan of the original story, the ending of Rebirth left me feeling incredibly heartbroken, defeated, and betrayed and I was looking for something to soften the blow. I don't usually put much stock in the opinions of online personalities, but Max really just nailed why this game means so much to people like me and why it hurts so badly that this "remake" went so insanely hard, only to completely shit the bed on the final stretch and stomp on everything the original game stood for. I'm sure I'm going to be lambasted for being a "boomer OG FFVII fan who doesn't like change" because it makes it easier to dismiss any valid criticism I may have despite how much I enjoyed everything but the final chapter, but I'm anxiously awaiting Max's reactions to later chapters as he seems to share a lot of my feelings for FFVII.

I went through a very difficult break up, my mom told me everyone goes through difficult things. I’d never met anyone that had gone through bad stuff and talked about it, until I played ff7 where all the characters are on a journey to heal their trauma. I found comfort in characters that were also going through bad things, it felt like I wasn’t alone. This game healed me through things with their characters healing alongside me!

Honestly, I was one of those guys who was brought up on the D&D and RPGs and 'nerdy bulls**t' as you called it (which is pretty much spot-on). I've played pretty much the entire FF series, from the first one on the NES, and while FF7 is nowhere close to my favourite JRPG or even my favourite FF game (FF6 is my jam), I can understand where others grew up with this game and connect so deeply with it, and can absolutely acknowledge its impact on the gaming world as a whole.
The one thing I love about FF7 is the steampunk aesthetic. That pleases me deeply, and there were very few RPGs that incorporated that mix of magic and technology, which has (in my opinion) become kind of a Square staple.
I am absolutely crossing my fingers for an FF6 remake of this caliber. If that happens, then I will extol its virtues as you have with FF7.
Thank you for your wisdom and passion.

While I personally think Final Fantasy 7 has aged in a lot of ways, I’ll never argue that to a lot of people, it’s a fantastic game on all fronts that stands the test of time.
I feel like the remake(s) will bring out that appreciation/love for me that I’ve seen people show the game all these years, and I’m extremely hyped for it.

Reason why FFVII was such an experience for me was that as a 10 year old boy, the game managed to put me into some sort of trance that for some reason kept me obsessed, practically infatuated with it. Looking back, I say it's a combination of the music [the sound engine combined with Uetmatu's choice of synthetic instrumentation] which fits PERFECTLY into this dystopian world that's a fantastically strange blend of cyber and dieselpunk. There has been no game like it since and to this day I look at any game that shows steel industrial buildings and rusty, imposing pipes with glee. The setting and the music produces a melancholy so intense that you practically end up being emotionally zombified from it. The journey only becomes more mesmerizing as world expands and becomes increasingly diverse as you progress.
Then there's the pacing of the entire thing. You spend 5 - 10 hours getting immersed in a city fighting against an enemy, only to realize there is a far more serious, common threat that has violently emerged from the grave. Suddenly you're thrown into a vast world map that tells you the adventure has just started and that you're no longer in a bottleneck, extremely curious yet terrified that you and the party are embarking on a wild goose chase over someone so powerful that it seems ludicrous to even go near him; for goodness sake, you spend the first few hours finding out just how shit in various ways you are compared to him. But as the world just endlessly chucks in more depth which fleshes out the characters you know, if not for making you excited with the possibility of meeting new ones. Reaching each town always brings a huge sense of reward especially as the game always throws you an obstacle that stops you from getting there until you crack the puzzle and progress. There is always an incentive to keep pushing on regardless of the challenges, and every run in with Sephiroth and his intimidating presence just makes you want to find out more. The party grows larger, but even they begin to share an empathy on who they're facing and what must be done.
That is what makes FFVII better than the rest.

Very similar story to urs, i never played story heavy games before and also didnt have anymore to play alot of games so when i got a playstation i just played Tekken and Crash.
For my 11th birthday mom bought me ace combat and i finished the game on the morning of my birthday, i was sad.. cause chrismas would be the next time i would get a new game.
Mom returned it and asked the clerk for a game that her son could play for a long time. that guy gave my mom FF7 and i am so goddamn greatfull to that unknown storeclerk for making my life so much better.
I pressed all the buttons when Cloud engaged those first gaurds, i had never seen turn based combat. i would run downstairs and ask my dad what words like "Knowledge" meant.
during my years ive played it countless times, i cry when i hear the music cause it reminds me of better times. also it reminds me of that amazing adventure i had with my friends.. Cloud, Barret, Aeris, Tifa, Red, Cid, Vincent, Yuffie and Cait Sith..

    FF7 was my milestone game.
My mother bought it and played it, my best friend at the time, her little sister and 2 other family friends, and my sisters all came over to watch my Mum play. We all had characters we voiced. We all got attached, we all loved it. We screamed at every FMV, we cried together, my best friend and I pulled an all nighter to breed a gold chocobo.
Then I played it myself, it was the first rpg game I had finished completely, and I played it more then 20+ times, to the point that I was a walking walkthrough, I knew what item was in every chest, and knew every code and puzzle that needed to be known.
We loved it so much, that before there were downloads and good internet, I recorded the soundtrack through tape and mic. I still have it, during the chocobo ranch song you can hear my mum and sisters screaming in the background as she killed a spider in another room.
And lastly, the love of the game led me to my husband... He in the early years of livejournal had Cloud as his avatar, and like me the game was everything to him. We have been together now for 16yrs.
I tell you what no other game has impacted me as hard.

How Max describes FFVI and CT going from SNES to PS1. Is EXACTLY what my childhood was. I played FFVI first, on a total whim, rented from a game store, and I fell IN LOVE with that game by the Whelk fight in the first 5 mins of that game. And when FFVII was released, I was like 14, and I BEGGED BEGGED my parents to get me a PS1 just for FFVII. I didn't care about anything else in the world at that moment. And I'll never forget what that game did to me back then. It was truly the OG of games that made you feel something about it's characters and story. And it couldn't have been possible without FFVI and CT.
Hit the nail right on the head with this description. The zoomers just won't understand what FFVII was for us boomers back in the 90s. It was EVERYTHING.

God, you are so on point with this, Max. And there are so many similarities between our experiences. I was 14 in 1999. I vaguely remembered seeing the commercials for it several years prior, but I was still in my Zelda phase. Ocarina of Time was about as good as I thought games could get. Then I went over to my friend's house one Summer day and he was in the middle of fighting the Guard Scorpion. I was immediately entranced. It took another few weeks of watching him get through a bit more of Disc 1 before I finally broke down and came up with 40 bucks to buy a used PS1 from an acquaintance at school. I forget how much I paid for the game, but the combined cost was a hell of a lot of money at the time for a 14 year old!
I fell in love with EVERYTHING about it. The boss music was the most epic thing I'd ever heard. I legitimately fell hard for Aeris. I cried myself to sleep the night that I had to say goodbye to her. I sat in school every day doodling terrible fan art. I was a wreck for weeks after finishing it. I've never been so thoroughly shaped by any story, and that holds true today (though some games and films have come close). Then a mere two or three months after finishing it, Square dropped FF8 in front of the fan base and I lost my mind at the thought of getting to go on another adventure like that.
There's no way to replicate those pure teenage emotions directly now that we're in our 30's, but I'll be damned if it doesn't feel like Square is putting together an experience that is going to come very close. I'm staying up past my bedtime again, poring over the internet for new screens, trailers and info. I'm tearing up every time I watch that intro. Square has somehow captured the collective imaginations of every 14 year old in the late 90's (the way we THOUGHT we saw the game back then) and made it a reality. And what really warms my heart is the knowledge that I'll get to share those same emotions and sense of wonder with my daughter. She's not nearly old enough to play yet, but in a few years I'm going to sit her down and show her all of Dad's old FF7 friends.
That we've had to wait 15 years (since that dastardly PS3 tech demo) makes it all the sweeter. I'm so fucking excited, man.

It was my first rpg. From a childhood of playing Mario, MegaMan, Donkey Kong Country. I got my ps1 as a early teen and it blew my mind. I remember playing and playing and reaching the end of midgar section and thinking: 'Yes, this is so badass, this game was pretty good! No.. wait... It is not over yet??? What is this huge world map!" From there on I loved every second of it till the end. That was it. Favorite game ever! But as you said, this opened the door. Many great RPGs I played , so many gems. I started to look down on FF7. It wasn't that great, what was fun was the materia system and that's it... Then I replayed it a few months ago... And no. This game still made me love it to bits, the same wonder still shook my body. The vast amount of new things to experiment with. Every scene made me giddy with how they would be remade. FF7 isn't my favorite game anymore. It has many flaws and broken systems. Story was better in other games too. But I still love it... And I wanna rediscover ff7 remake with the same wonder I had when I was a teen. I wanna it to blow my mind. It may not, but I just hope it ends up being at least just a good game. After all there years the story will end when I leave midgar...
Sorry for the long rant. FF7 HYPE!!!

Since Rebirth is just on the horizon, just wanted wanted to add that this hits the nail on the head. Up to this point, the games I had played mostly involved saving the princess, or fighting the bad guy to save the world. In all those games, the hero always came out on top. This game not only got me attached to the characters, it was also the first time I had ever seen the hero fail in many ways. Failure to save someone, failure to live up to his expectations, etc. As I got older, it stuck with me more than many other games, as I (and many others) went through their own failures and redemption's.

*Standing here in awe watching the 13 knights fight in real time.*
We might need a new console to be able to handle this combat sequence in such detail. 13 knights just going all in for a couple minutes. Probably like in the OG there was a sequence of their attacks. We might get one at a time fighting with us and they gradually cycle through and the final one has the ultimate attack before the summon ends.
Edit: I speculate that with the current changes to summons. This may be a one time experience for a specific fight. But hopefully not. Either way if they manage to implement it in this engine of the new game, I will be content.

This video got me into Final Fantasy VII.
During 2020, when the world went to hell and back, i was watching a few Top 10 watch mojo list videos and i kept noticing FF7 involved in so many lists. I wanted to see why people really liked this (or even love) this game.
I found this clip and i grew to understand its importance for the time it came out but was still holding back whether or not to actually try and play the game. Im also a wrestling/ fighting game player and i knew i didnt wanna give any rpg a chance cause it seemed slow and too complicated to understand, let alone care for.
I then found out that FF7 Remake had a Demo and that was gonna be the decider for me on whether or not i was gonna go all in on this.
4 years later and after going down sooooo many wormholes related to ff7 and it is personally one of the best and personal favorites of mine. I purchased the Remake and was confused by ALOT and then realised, what i was playing was actually a prequel, not a full remake. So i then decided if i wanted to understand the base story i needed to play the ps1 game. Played that and loved it.
The thing FF7 has taught me is that there are certain things in life that even with a good short understanding, its better to experience it for your self.
FF7 is not to be told, it is to be experienced.

I was 9 when i played this game.
I remember so clearly the first time i saw it: i was in the living room of some friends of my parents, while they were talking i was just left there on the couch and started playing their PS2 games, until i got to the FFVII discs and started, and i was blown immediately, went through the entire Bombing Run immediately.
These friends saw me so passionate to it that they gave it to me.
It took me probably a year to go through it, as i am not English and at the time i was probably going through colors and numbers in grade school. Had to play it with a dictionary at hand and often with my neighbor to understand better, and i still am pretty surprised i got most of it. Could say that i learned English with VII.
FFVII got me into Final Fantasy, which got me into JRPGs, which got me more into Japanese Pop Culture, which eventually led me to study Japanese in college and make a career out of languages, and possibly later this year to move to Japan to work on videogames.
In short, FFVII probably changed the direction of my life.

I was a Nintendo kid for most of my childhood and teens. What you described as the first RPG that had a story that gripped you and brought you into its world... That was Chrono Trigger for me. I did not play FFVII until I downloaded it on the PS store sometime in my early twenties. Sadly, by that point I already knew a bunch of the key points like character deaths and other iconic scenes through osmosis. I came to understand why so many people love it. It is with no amount of sarcasm or irony to say that it is a classic and a cornerstone of video game history. Now gonna be honest, my feelings towards FFVII cannot match those of people to whom it is *that one game*... But good god did I feel sheer joy when watching that trailer. Seeing people's reactions to it, their elation... and hearing all these stories, really got to me. Having finished the remake just today, I'm filled with a rather sweet feeling of melancholy. That was a truly special experience...
The soundtrack was fucking fantastic. I looked up the main theme on YT and, reading through the comments I noticed one that stuck with me. It went something along the lines of "this game could not have come out at a better time. It is a story about hope and defiance of fate." I'm currently in my last year of medical school. Will be graduating soon and, if I match, will be going out to fight this goddamn pandemic along my peers. Being stuck in my house while I played FFVIIR, I feel like I will forever associate this game with these times. It might sound a tad cheesy, but playing it really helped me get out of the slump I was in... seeing the number of cases and deaths mount up can be really disheartening, especially for people in the frontlines... But I felt reinvigorated coming out of it.
    The Unknown Journey *will* continue.

I’m a little bit younger than you, so my first RPG was Pokemon Yellow. My parents didn’t let me have video games as a little kid, so I got a Gameboy Color on my 10th birthday and my brother and I split a PS1 (the tiny version) for Christmas later that year. I remember going to a friend’s house and watching him play FF8 and using Ifrit, which made me think “oh this looks a lot like Pokemon, you catch monsters then use them in battle.” So our first PS1 game was FF8 and my brother and I played the hell out of it.
I got FF7 used a few months later, and at the time it looked a lot “older” than FF8 (and it’s the reason why we got FF9 and not the Final Fantasy Chronicles with Chrono Trigger in it). I played it until the second disc, and it turned out the disc was scratched and couldn’t read. My parents didn’t know gaming and were like “just play the other two discs” so I never beat 7. FF8 was the same game you’re describing here for me. But even then, FF7 is *STILL* a game that chokes me up when I hear the music because of how great it is.

As someone in the younger 20’s category, I see what Max means. I grew up with a PS1 but since it was a pretty old system by the time I was born, I never got to experience any of the great games of it in its heyday (except for TEKKEN 3 because a friend owned it). Shit, I still haven’t played through all of FFVII. I can still respect the love people have for the game since I believe anyone that’s truly interested in video games has a game that did something to them like FFVII did to Max, Huber, and all the people in the video. For me, that was chrono trigger and FFVI (which I didn’t even play until a few years ago). Chrono Trigger won me over with its fun and creative battle system that actually made it rewarding to wait in the game for your turn (last I remember since the enemies can move to spots that allow you to do team attacks if I’m remembering right). It also had some of the best music that to this day is some of the best I’ve ever heard in a game. FFVI also did it for me by having an engaging and unconventional story (which I still need to finish) along with amazing cinematic experiences like the opera scene that I’d personally love to see done in a remake. So even though I don’t understand the hype specifically for FFVII, I can still understand in general. Because we all have that one game or two that just changed how we see or play games.

I played with my friend the summer of 98. We didn’t have a memory card at first, and had no idea what we were getting into. Must have played through the first reactor 3 or 4 times (so annoying) until we finally picked up an after market memory card.
One day, At the end of that summer, after using the last tent right before the final battle, I turned on the ps and got the error. Then - poof - everything - all the save files - gone. It was a disaster.
I’ll never forget looking up the 1-800 number to Sony , calling , nearly in tears with their technical support. I remember saying But we had the Gold Chocobo do you even understand what that means?! to the poor soul on the other line.
Since then I’ve played through ff7 more than eight times - sometimes I stop playing around cosmo canyon, one time I got all the way up to that final cave.
    But I never beat it.
And then, life happened, work, job, money, wife. I always followed the news , in particular after 2005, hoping - waiting , for one last battle.
The reason I look forward to this remake, it may be the last time I ever play final fantasy 7. And I will leave nothing behind , and I will once and for all face the final foe that has been taunting me for 20 years .

I was in a department store the year it came out, in France. I was 10, the « big dudes » were playing through the bombing mission, my friend and I had never seen OR HEARD anything like it... I will always remember my first hearing the Mako reactor’s theme. Nothing sounded so deep to me back then. My friend and I then spent all our Wednesday afternoons together making progress, while week ends were dedicated to grinding. We used to keep the save file of the guy who made the biggest progress. Anyway, fond memories from 23 years ago...

Chrono trigger is definitely in my top 2 games of all time but like max said FF7 was different. It was the first game that modernized RPGs and pushed them into the mainstream. I just wish they would make a 3rd Chrono game and finally finish off the Schala and Janus story.

@@thebanfflocal2366 which is true for some people but as others said people who already were into rpgs played better games.
If 7 was released back on N64 i don't believe it would have sold as well. The commercials and hype was all about how good the game looked and gamers weren't used to discs.
I don't think 7 is a bad game but the hype behind it i felt was greater than the actual game.
It dam sure has the member berries feel lol. People love nostalgia. Look at the crappy lion king remake.
Still did a billion despite being a bad movie because of name recognition.
The older films Didn't rely on cgi or pixar style animation to be classics. They had to be good films.
7 for many people had a very weak story and with remake i can honestly care less about Cloud.
Out of the final fantasy series as a franchise he's known for a big anime sword and spikey hair.
But pretty dull as a hero lol

@@thebanfflocal2366 No, it's a myth that RPGs weren't mainstream until FF VII. Super Mario RPG was the most rented game in American for the summer of 1996. There had never been an RPG mega-hit like that, but there really hasn't been one since. Maybe Elder Scrolls or the Witcher or something, but Final Fantasy has never sold that well again.

I grew up with a PS1 at home when I was a kid but I was very late to the FF7 party and it was my first RPG too. The thing that drew me in the most with this game is that it is set in a world that we can relate to (evil corporation polluting and destroying the world) instead of the usual fantasy, Lord of the Rings-esque setting that RPG's typically followed at the time and you are instantly thrown in to the action by blowing up a reactor before you really know what is even happening. The part that I always remember the most is Aeris' final scene, playing through that section a few months after losing my dad completely broke me as a kid and still hits me hard every time I play the game.

The music... So iconic. .. Arieth's theme, there is nothing like it. It's up there with the greatest classical pieces for me. Or the main theme when you first leave Midgar... My gf only vaguely remembers her brother playing it in the 90s but when she heard the battle music again 'oh yeah I remember it now'.

I'm 18. When I was 8 years old, my brother got this game called dirge of cerberus FFVII and I remember watching him play the game and me falling in love with it. Kinda weird considering DOC is considered a terrible spin-off to the amazing FFVII franchise. Anyways, after playing that game endlessly myself I needed to find out more about FFVII, I got my brothers to get Crisis Core for the PSP which became my favorite game at that point and zack became my most beloved protagonist for a game. I loved the music, the characters and the surreal feeling I got from FFVII. It was truly a fantasy. I really didn't understand most of it though cuz I was a kid. I watched Advent Children, the crisis core anime and consumed pretty much all content that came with FFVII, except the original game. I never played the original FFVII and honestly I didn't know why. It's probably because at the time I didn't have a PS1 nor a good PC to play it. With time, I played other FF games and Final Fantasy became my all time favorite game franchise. In 2015, I realized that something didn't want me to play the original game. The FFVII remake reveal brought me to tears, a guy who hadn't even played the original game. That is why FFVII is so important. It is a game with such rich lore and a beautiful story that anyone would love it.

I... Never played FF7. My parents never wanted to buy me and my brother consoles, because "we'll just play and study". We did get DS and gameboy, but that was as far as it got. I came to know of it as I grew up. I did watch Advent Children and the Last Order anime, but that was as far as it goes. But when that E3 2015 trailer came out, and learning about how important this game is, after all that, I can't help but be moved to tears when people talk so passionately about the game and how happy they are that it's getting remade.
