ABA Grand Nationals 1991 at the Myriad Convention Center in Oklahoma City, OK - 16 X Main - The Most Controversial BMX Race of all Time? - The Amateur Title is on the line, and Mike Luna goes for a wild move in the last turn, taking John Rana over the berm. In the end, Mike Luna gets disqualified, Zack Roebuck gets the win, and Roebuck earns the National #1 Amateur Title by 1 point due to the Mike Luna disqualification. Was the DQ justified? Did Rana get robbed of the win? Did Luna get robbed of the title? Or did Jason Donnell (see the 15 X Main)? You make the call.

Wow just stumbled upon this! I was there (17x) and still remember it like yesterday! I remember seeing you guys battle (15-16x) while waiting for my quarters...the tension was building! You were always great at the big races Corky, was always great to see the WA guys represented at the grands!

@bmxf1 Ha. Glad you could finally see this one! It's been etched in my memory forever. Luna definitely felt the pressure. Did you know, that if he would have just stayed in 2nd place he would have won the overall title? If you find the 15x main on here, you'll also see the race where I won & Donnell got 2nd. In an alternate universe, if he could have pitched me over the last turn (and not gotten DQ'ed), he would have won the title. But Jason was never that kind of racer. Crazy stuff, for sure.

It amazes me how much ground Luna was able to make up. If only he'd settled for 2nd...

I remember Luna getting DQ'd and thought it was BS. I've never actually seen it on video til now. What a bunch of horse shit. Luna barely touched Rena. I''m gonna tell Clayton next time I see him, that he owes Luna a Cup. :-) Actually, Zack needs to polish his old tarnished Cup and send it to Luna, along with a nice note saying, "Sorry Mike, this belongs to you. Thanks for letting me keep it all these years." LOL

Hey corky. I raced 9 years in the late 80s thru mid 90s. I was 16, and at this race, albeit I was an intermediate and not in on this legendary race. Luna did get screwed and yeah he could have won it with second place, but first thing, did he know that going in? I don’t think he did right? Also, those kinds of racers, that upper tier like Luna, Jason donnell, Justin green, Andy contes, that killer instinct they possess makes it hard for them to settle for anything else but victory. I mean, I’m amazed at how he tore through that back straight away and the ground that he made up like those other guys were standing still. Incredible! I doubt you ever see this cuz it’s been years, but thanks for posting this. You were an amazing racer too by the way😃

The racers always know. If they don't "know" their Team Managers are there letting them know. Donnell knew, and if you look at the 15x Main, he COULD have taken me over the last turn. Instead, he kept the 2nd place solid, didn't get DQ'ed, and took over the point lead. The ONLY way Donnell could lose the title at that point was if Luna got 1st or 2nd. No one counted on Roebuck winning, and no one had any idea that Roebuck was even close to taking over the title... which he then won by 1 point.

That being said... Luna moving from the middle/back of pack and almost winning the race... was SIGNATURE Mike Luna. Epic. That dude was unreal. I still don't know if I agree on the DQ or not. Back then, it was 50/50 if those kind of moves got called, and I don't think anyone was willing to hand him the title based upon winning from that type of wild / potentially disqualifying move.

That shit was intense...I remember Scott Breithaupt freaking out cheering because Roebuck won, then Luna going out to talk to Clayton. You could totally read the lips: "this is bullshit." And yes, that white G.T. was the shit.

This was to me the most rembered story of the 90's I remember reading about this in BMXplus &Go. Leading up to this race ol Mikey musta been feeling the presure. I hella wanted him to get both titles, back then I was 15i & I rode a GT. Thank you Corky for posting the one race I always read about but never saw. I still till this day trip out on that ALL WHITE GT. Super NARLY

@eelson This IS that race. Jason Donnell got 2nd Place in 15x (that video is also posted on here). When Roebuck got 1st in this 16x race, he ended up beating Donnell for the overall amateur title by 1 point.

Well... as an old school racer I've seen a lot worse... I don't think this was worth a d.q. Luna raced one hell of a race...

Why is someone playing the symbols to match the action? It sounds like a movie sound track to raise tension.

Ha! We had brought a cymbal and some sticks to the races to hit while our teammates were racing. Obnoxious? Yes. But fun and effective. My teammate was winning that race into the last turn, so the cymbal was - indeed - getting slammed to match the action!

That was just a weak sauce race by everybody. Nobody showed anything and they were slow. Granted, that track sucked, but everybody playing it safe to the point that Luna got squirrely because he got too nervous. And the dips hit that went over the berm lost out to nerves too. He shoulda handled his business and shut the door early. You can’t wait until then to turn. Just too late.
