@@Jodywithawhy Could you go over colorblind standards, testing like ishihara/CCT (how prevalent the CCT testing is and if you can ask for it), and waivers for jobs? I am currently wanting to go into SERE instructing but am not sure if waivers are even an option. If you could make a list of possible waivered positions if you get above a 55 on the CCT?
It’s pretty simple. If you miss more than 2 plates they will be considered colorblind. So even though you can see color, the Air Force will say you’re technically color blind according to their standard. As far as waivers go, it’s really a case by case. Special Warfare careers may waive it, but anything other than that, will probably not be entertained at all. Does this help??
I don’t know, man. This sounds a little too good to be true. Let me tell you all a story. I tried to join the navy out of high school about 12 years ago. My recruiter drilled into me “DONT BE JOB LOCKED” so i didn’t, but i scored very high on the asvab and qualified for intelligence, IT, etc and i was pretty fit. I go to MEPS in los angeles and met with the liaison and my recruiter and when i sat down to sign for one of the five jobs i listed they said “we only have culinary, let’s get you signing here on the dotted line....” i said “F’in kidding me? Hell no, a monkey could qualify for culinary! I got one of the highest asvab scores out of this office!” They both start getting angry and say “oh okay so you’re JOB LOCKED THEN?! Wow, you don’t want to serve your country, what a coward and disappointment. Job locked coward man.” I stormed out, drove home, found a new recruiter, joined the air force with the job i wanted. Sure, list three to five you could see yourself doing but if a recruiter says “YOURE JOB LOCKED! STOP IT!” flip him off and walk out of the office. Recruiters get a certain amount of money if they fill particular jobs needed at that time. They don’t give a F*** about what you want, they just want their christmas bonus. Sure, list a couple jobs, but don’t you dare sign a damn thing until you’re completely happy and at peace. Remember, it’s 4-6 years of your life with NO freedoms. Do you wanna he a fry cook for six years or you wanna do your dream job? Ask yourself that before you sign on the dotted line. Just my two cents. I got screwed once, don’t wanna let it happen to any of y’all.
Let me clear up one thing. We do not get bonuses for enlisting you guys. We do however receive special duty pay which is paid whether or not we’re successful. I can put in 20 in one month or none, and I’ll still make the same $450 a month. Next thing. There are recruiters who are only trying to fill jobs the squadron needs. They’re not protecting their applicants, but instead forcing them into jobs. This happens, and I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but it happens. I never forced people into jobs. I did however make sure they were flexible, because at the end of the day, it’s meeting the Air Force needs. Of course, not everyone will be completely satisfied with how the process works, but this information is the most accurate info you’ll find on the internet. Anything else is subjective or rare cases.
Bro you were job locked and you clearly explained it. What you don't know is that recruiters see ASVAB scores daily. Ranging from 99 to 4. So you feeling entitled is part of the process. Just feel lucky that you were able to find a recruiter that worked with you after you screwed another recruiter. Trust me the recruiter that put you in had a conversation with the recruiter that you screwed, it's apart of the business. The recruiter that put you in took a chance or "rolled the dice" on you as we call it and wad most likely a new recruiter. An experienced recruiter would of kept it moving on you. I'm just telling you real facts. Thank God you didn't scrt8the new recruiter.
I'm going to the navy. i don't know if this count as "job locked," but if meps doesn't have ctt, ctr, is, or ag (the ratings i liked the most out of all the rates i researched) then i'm holding out until a spot is available.

As someone who's been through it before I agree with everything he's saying except one thing. If there's a job you really want don't settle for anything else. As a recruiter they will try to fill the high demand jobs first. Don't just settle for a job the recruiter recommends odds are you'll regret it because it's not what you wanted.
Oh you gotta call or text them back. Sometimes these recruiters are super busy, and are focused on the applicants they are working right now. Sometimes you just gotta let them know they should make you a priority. You do this by hitting them back up, letting them know you have your birth certificate, drivers license, social security card and diploma ready to go. Now all you need to do is schedule an appointment. Recruiters love applicants who are proactive. Give that a try and see what happens.
Just got offered a contract for my number one pick, leaving at the perfect time! I feel incredibly lucky and grateful, your videos were a huge part of me being able to work through the process. Thankfully my recruiter is not the salesperson type, and when I expressed doubt she helped me understand that I wouldn't have to put my wife second to be in the air force, as her son also has medical conditions and she always puts him first. I am Army retired and a Disabled Vet. Thank you for your video. I disagree with not sticking to your job’s list. Do not take a job you do not desire, you will regret taking it…. I recommend WAITING until your desired job comes open. At the end of the day, you may NEVER see that recruiter again. I also was a recruiter in the civilian world. The recruiters have to meet a quota as well.

For all the high school graduates thinking about joining - DO NOT misconstrue the idea of "job locked" with a "list of PREFERRED jobs". I recommend anyone interested to have at least 5 jobs you are actually interested in. Put those jobs down and wait until one of your preferred jobs comes up. Beware of scare tactics and DO NOT be forced/tricked into mechanical or electrical fields unless you absolutely want that specific job. For example: some recruiters will say, "Sorry those AFSC's are not being contracted to anyone for the rest of the year. Your only choice is [x] AFSC. Know that if you don't pick an AFSC soon you will be kicked out of the DEP."
There’s some truth in this. Once you create a job list, you do not have to change it. You are entitled to wait until you receive one of the jobs on your list. However, some squadrons have policies that won’t let you list jobs they’re not hiring for. Also, all squadrons have the “1 year in the DEP” policy. So if you’re not matched to a job within a year, you’ll be DEP discharged. So in summary, this advice is case by case. But not bad advice, just won’t work everywhere.
@@Jodywithawhy Finally. A real recruiter who recognizes truth and facts. I wish more recruiters would actually share the micro nuances of finding contracts and help their new DEP members actually succeed. Also, being DEP discharged is not the end of the world. You can find another way if you're willing to wait.
I pretty much got the job that I wanted in the AF. I was stationed in Europe for 8 years and pretty much loved it in the electronics communications maintenance field. Did a lot of touring all over Europe during my vacation time and some off time. But this was during the Cold War days. When the Cold War ended a lot of air bases and air stations closed down. Wonder if there are any bases or air stations still exist in Europe. I retired after 20 years of service in the AF.

Already took my ASVAB, know my jobs that I’m qualified for. Met with an Army requiter months ago, met her and took an ASVAB a week later scored a 53. October 7th I have my first meeting with my Air Force recruiter. G 57 A 50. Great video and your other videos led me here

I spoke to an Air Force recruiter yesterday for the reserves. I didn't realize that the military no longer take people as they are anymore. You gotta be at specific BMI and body fat and practically be medication-less. I was like I will scrub toilets and drive the bus. I will never put a person down for trying to take care of their family. I was like okay man 1 weekend a month and two weeks a year you betcha. That was a hard pill to swallow. My lifestyle choices kept me from opportunity to give my wife and kids a boost. I have 3 undergraduate college diplomas. Officer could be on the table but they are super strict now. If they are willing to take ages up to 42 now I thought maybe.

After 2 years of ROTC I decided I wanted to be an engineer more than an officer, so I dropped out of the program. To this day, I consider it one of my top 5 mistakes.
As a 31 year old male. I want to change my life. I was original permanently medical disqualified for fine muscle tremors, adhd, and inability to do a duck walk . I also got a misdemeanor harrassment kick and shoving charge at my work after a fellow employee pushed me, that is going to be dismissed in a year after I completed the 40 hours for community service in 2020. I have gone to trade school. I know it’s a lot to overcome but I want so desperately to change my life and the Air Force can give me the chance
Anything is possible, but those muscle tremors are gonna be hard to work unless you can prove that medical condition and the other ones are completely gone. Also, if you were on probation (I don’t know if you were or not) because of the incident at work, you have 90 days after your probation ends to start the process. Hope this helps.
I'm retired air force, I was a c-130 aircraft mechanic, the air force likes people who are strong in math and science. Physically, do endurance sports not weights.
The USAF Medical System lines up very well with the civilian job market better than any other. If you are interested in the medical field the AF is the best way to go by far. I was in civilian healthcare for two decades and many military jobs are poor fits in most hospitals/EMT systems.

Great content, I have been using some of your videos to guide my sister with her questions towards joining the Air Force. I have a question for myself though, do you happen to know the process for cross branching? I'm an enlisted IT2/E5 in the Navy and I've been trying to find instructions or whatever would govern this type of process. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
If you’re trying to do it while serving, you’ll need to coordinate with your career advisor and get a conditional release. If you’re waiting until you get out then joining, you’d want to set yourself up. Meaning have a good PT test, good DD-214 with a good reenlistment code. All of your training records from your job and tech schools. Your medical records and enlisted performance reports. Your recruiter will first try to “direct to duty” you, meaning you go back in to a similar job as the one you did in the navy. If they don’t have a direct to duty job for you, then you’d be on the cross training list. That list is very slim, and can take awhile before they find you a job. Unless you went guard or reserve, they have a ton of jobs for prior service. But active duty, it’s a long and slow process. I hope this helps.

I want to join the Air Force so bad, but I got separated from the Marine Corps in January with an RE-4 code. I’m going to talk to the Air Force recruiter tomorrow, hopefully they can get me a waiver.
I went to a AF recruiter and the time we were talking she would ask me if I had any question, and I couldn’t think of any while I was their or even before my appointment. She asked me a couple of times but, I didn’t really have any but she still was very informative. I felt bad I didn’t have any question for her, I didn’t want to look like I wasn’t interested. Tried reaching out to her to ask one question but haven’t been able to reach her, the call goes straight to voicemail. I’ve wish I seen this video before going to my recruiter but I’m still working on joining and studying over math to get a good ASVAB score, I can’t stand math.

I have to admit I am really hoping for a cyber-sec position as that is my long-term life goal, but I have a relevant Bachelors and hold certifications in the field (Network+, Security+, Server+, GSEC). Once I mentioned those the recruiter I spoke with sounded positive, but I've been told to be wary. Still I'll definitely keep an open mind with regard to other jobs I qualify for. The only tattoo you can have on your hand is one ring tattoo on one finger. If it’s not that it’s disqualifying. You can get tattoos removed though if you’re ok with that.
Thinking of joining at age 33 next year. Have a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and minor in CS. I was thinking of doing OTS but that is a long wait (and very competitive) plus I didn't know about the officer recruiter and enlisted recruiter. Should i find an officer recruiter now? Then I was thinking of contacting enlisted recruiter when I'm ready to go next year. If enlisted, i would love a career change from accounting and go to Cyber field. I would recommend you start with the officer recruiter and figure out their timeless and see if they work for you. If not, then reach out to an enlisted recruiter and work that avenue. Your job list should be fine for enlisted. But the officer list, I’m not sure because I was never an officer recruiter. I hope that helps.
Do you know of an easier way to look at the jobs the air force has than the official website. It makes it hard to see what each one is and keep track of what you're looking at. I would appreciate a list rather than all the filter buttons that are difficult to deal with. I am leaning heavily toward linguist but I would love to explore all options.

Thank you for explaining the pipeline , that helps quite a bit! While I had a rough idea of the flow, the first visits to the recruiter are not clear on the website, or I missed that part.
When I joined, we didn’t have RUclips or internet to research this. All you really had was what your recruiter or family suggested. I got the job I wanted, as it was having manning issues. If you are joining these days, there really is no excuse to be job ignorant.
Maybe I’m crazy but I am interested in law enforcement on the civilian side and I want Security Forces. I have little to no interest in anything else the Air Force has to offer. If I show my recruiter 5 or 6 other MOS that I don’t care for should I just settle? That sounds like a bullshit idea. I want what I want, this is potentially 4-6 years of my life
I guess I could be "job locked" then...I want to be a pilot. I have wanted to be a pilot as long as I can remember. I have even gone to school for it majoring in Aviation Technical Science. I would not go to the Air Force if I could afford civilian flight school but unfortunately that's not the case. I don't want to settle for some lower level position like a chef on the base for the next six years. I don't care if I'm flying C-130's or F-22's I just want to fly. I spent four years in college to be an officer and I know I can score very highly on the ASVAB. I don't really understand the issue??
I imagine my comment will most likely be deleted but I have a lot of people family/friends in the Air Force and saying that you should just deal with the job they give you is bad advice, if it’s something you plan to do for the next 4-8 years it should be something that you want to do. I understand that it’s a recruiters job to recruit but to put someone into something that they can’t stand for years is more selfish than trying to help.

That’s awesome you’re going to see a recruiter. I will say this, fire protection is one of the most sought after careers in the Air Force. Which mean it’s difficult to get. So make sure you when listing the other jobs, they are things you’d like to do, because you’d most likely get one of those, unless you’re extremely lucky. JodywithaWhy my son meet a recluirte already took the ASVAD SCORE 82 . Then they asked for a lot info he send it because everything now is by the phone and they say to wait . Wait what ??? There is this recruiter from the Army who is very interested on him because his score ,my son lives in Fl and that recluirte is station in New York and said he can recruit him. Does the Air Force do the same thing ?? Because the Air Force recruiter in Brandon Fl , Tampa area look like they don’t want help . Or do their jobs . Thanks
Congrats on that score. That’s huge. But if he’s out of high school, he can work with another recruiter. Sometimes, and especially in a place like Florida, they’re so overwhelmed with business. Doesn’t mean they don’t want to work him, but instead it could mean they looking for the time. I hope this helps. Good luck. Just take the test and see what jobs you can qualify for. After that you need to research those jobs and find out about openings. Do they still have open enlistments? Back in my day I enlisted in the General field and got my job assignment near the end of BMT. No matter what job you get the Air Force will change your life. And I am betting it will be for the better.
They still have open enlistments. They call them aptitude areas now. But they’re basically still the same thing. However there are a lot less aptitude areas than actual jobs, so that’s a plus.

1:58 I've never studied for the asvab or anything, if I get a low grade on my asvab, will that disqualify me from joining ? I've heard the AF is rlly on ur ass with high asvab scores and stuff.

Thank you for watching. I don’t know a recruiter in Long Island, but I’ll tell you this. Security Forces is the biggest career field the Air Force has. So generally it’s one of the easiest jobs to get into. Still no guarantee though, because he has to have all the right qualifications. Thank you for your informative videos. My son is graduating high school in 18 days and is in the enlisting process. He is currently a member of the Air Force JROTC at his school. It's his first year in the program and his instructor promoted him as Flight Commander due his ability to being a leader from playing sports. He has already taken the ASVAB test and got a score of 86 on the first try. He's a very tech savvy young man. I was wondering if he would be eligible for cyber security and IT jobs which is his choice career path. He has already filled out the long application. I would love to come off well-rounded, but my true and strongest specialty is language. I have been a polyglot and language learner since I was a kid and I am currently in college getting a degree in Modern Languages with a concentration in Russian. In addition, I speak 4 other languages fluently. Having said that, would I still be crossing a line with my recruiter if I pushed/waited to get my dream job as a Cryptologic Language Analyst?
Not really. Because that’s a hard job to qualify for and we’re always looking. However, you need to be open to other jobs as well, because if you don’t qualify for linguist, what then?? A recruiter won’t work you if all you wanna do is linguist. Because if you fail the dlab or don’t qualify, then it’ll be a waste of time for everyone. So just be open, but if you pass and qualify, they’ll definitely work with you and get you a linguist job.

Whats the details for how often administration jobs become available? I'm hoping for personnel. Hoping for a miracle that'll allow me to leave by Jan. Meeting with my recruiter finally next week. Took my asvab in highschool earlier this year and scored a 69. Got clearance from my neurologist because I had absence seizures in early childhood. Hopefully I get a MEPS date soon.
I’ll be honest. With a 69 on the ASVAB, it’ll be really hard to get an administrative job, because you tested so high. Not only that, those jobs are very limited, so it makes it that much harder. Not saying it’s impossible, but it’s unlikely. Why not look into like an intel job. They do a lot of admin work, but they also have a cool mission which allows them to be involved with a lot of the current events happening in the world right now. So I'm thinking about joining the Air Force with TACP listed as my #1 choice; I have 90+ credit hours towards pre-med that kinda morphed into programming near the end of my time in college. I am 30 y/o and am in the best shape of my life, but have been searching for fulfilling work for some time now after dropping out of college to see to my ageing/sick parent(s). I was wondering if Jody or anyone with experience and/or thoughtful opinions would like to weigh in. I am tech literate and know my way around computer operating systems and multiple programming languages, but also enjoy working with my hands and am familiar with a range of modern weapons and tactics. PJ or anything on the medical side is out of the question.
You can go multiple different ways. The special warfare careers are challenging and rewarding. However we no longer let you go directly into a specific Special Warfare career. You have to go to through a pipeline first, after basic training and depending on how well you do there, that’ll determine which special warfare career you go into. Also, with your computer background you could look into our cyber careers. One that kind of stuck out to me as I was reading is computer systems programming. Special warfare and JTAC definitely caught my attention while researching and I recently ordered Dana Pittard's book "Hunting the Caliphate" to get a bit more insight into the career. I'd like to strike a nice balance between the physical and cerebral as I've performed as a high level athlete (ice hockey) much of my adult life and thoroughly enjoy being on my feet as well as making solutions in the abstract. Knowing now that selection for special warfare school isn't done until after basic certainly has put my mind at ease. Thank you again.

Or what can I do to know exactly what's going on or what to do? I don't want to complain on here but my recruiter certainly doesn't know much. The process is kinda messy, answers provided are not always correct, missing info that I've provided and finding out everyday things that are wrong last mn, have an appointment to find out on that day that they went on vacation(even my job list was messed up which i got after meps anyways). Oh no. That’s terrible. At this point your best bet is to ask to speak with their flight chief and address your problems. If you try to switch recruiters, the next recruiter will most likely send you back to your original recruiter because of the situation. I hope this helps. Hi Jody! I got myself into a predicament. A couple years ago I went into a recruiting office and filled out some paper work. I lied about having eczema because I haven’t had it in a while. I recently had a flare, and I’m thinking about joining again. The eczema isn’t bad, but I want to tell my recruiter about it. Am I able to change the answers in my paperwork? Idky i lied in the first place 😭 I have never went to MEPS yet as well. I don’t take any medicine for the eczema.
Okay I know we shouldn’t be job locked but what if we have less then 7 or 10 and only have 3 or 4. I mean let’s say the max 10 how much would you like the 10th choice. I just think you shouldn’t be job locked but at the same time don’t go for a job you can put up with but don’t really want to do
Look at the Air Force like a car. When you go to buy one, the number 1 question you should ask is does it drive? After that you start looking at things like size, Bluetooth, back up cam, color and rims etc... All that extra stuff are equivalent to the Air Force benefits and a job in the Air Force is like rims of a car. They look really good and are attractive, but they’re nothing if the vehicle doesn’t drive. The Air Force is the driving factor for your vehicle. Everything you’ll learn (leadership, stress management, time management, communication skills) will take you far in life, and you learn that in any job. As a matter of fact, the way the Air Force is structured, you will constantly change jobs. You start out doing the basic job, then you’ll eventually move into a leadership position teaching new airman how to do it. The longer you stay in, the more of a leader you become and the less you’re working your original basic job. So I always recommend don’t get caught on a job. That’ll only most likely frustrate you later.

I want to join but I have no experience with any jobs listed in the air force and I don't know what would be a good job for me. I want to join just because I want to do something with my life and challenge myself, open a new chapter in my life etc. I do have an associates degree in aviation costumer relations but I never worked in that field, I just went to school for it and graduated that's it.
I didn’t know what I wanted to do either. At all. I just knew I needed change. I would recommend you take the practice asvab and see what you potentially would qualify for. Join the Space Force! Must be able to pass a background check for eventually working in a top secret environment. Nobody messes with top secret workers. Colorado is an ok place to be assigned because it is headquartered there. If you cannot keep a secret don’t apply.
Hi. Very informative video. I have a question, when would be the best time to contact a recruiter? I was planning to make an appointment with one in February, however due to certain current obligations, I would not be able to leave for anything until about five months from now. Would meeting with a recruiter right now be too early? I understand recruiters are always busy and most videos make it seem like they would want someone who is readily available to get everything done. I couldn't find an answer to this anywhere.
You can meet now. However you’d have to be very clear that you couldn’t leave until 5 months. Meeting now would help you understand if you’re qualified or not, and whether or not you’d have to study for the asvab.
Unfortunately yes. Because they don’t pick what special warfare career you do until you’re in the Air Force. You have to prove to cadre you’re the right fit for PJ. Or end up in another special warfare career.

@@Jodywithawhy Could you go over colorblind standards, testing like ishihara/CCT (how prevalent the CCT testing is and if you can ask for it), and waivers for jobs? I am currently wanting to go into SERE instructing but am not sure if waivers are even an option. If you could make a list of possible waivered positions if you get above a 55 on the CCT?
It’s pretty simple. If you miss more than 2 plates they will be considered colorblind. So even though you can see color, the Air Force will say you’re technically color blind according to their standard.
As far as waivers go, it’s really a case by case. Special Warfare careers may waive it, but anything other than that, will probably not be entertained at all. Does this help??
I don’t know, man. This sounds a little too good to be true. Let me tell you all a story. I tried to join the navy out of high school about 12 years ago. My recruiter drilled into me “DONT BE JOB LOCKED” so i didn’t, but i scored very high on the asvab and qualified for intelligence, IT, etc and i was pretty fit. I go to MEPS in los angeles and met with the liaison and my recruiter and when i sat down to sign for one of the five jobs i listed they said “we only have culinary, let’s get you signing here on the dotted line....” i said “F’in kidding me? Hell no, a monkey could qualify for culinary! I got one of the highest asvab scores out of this office!” They both start getting angry and say “oh okay so you’re JOB LOCKED THEN?! Wow, you don’t want to serve your country, what a coward and disappointment. Job locked coward man.” I stormed out, drove home, found a new recruiter, joined the air force with the job i wanted. Sure, list three to five you could see yourself doing but if a recruiter says “YOURE JOB LOCKED! STOP IT!” flip him off and walk out of the office. Recruiters get a certain amount of money if they fill particular jobs needed at that time. They don’t give a F*** about what you want, they just want their christmas bonus. Sure, list a couple jobs, but don’t you dare sign a damn thing until you’re completely happy and at peace. Remember, it’s 4-6 years of your life with NO freedoms. Do you wanna he a fry cook for six years or you wanna do your dream job? Ask yourself that before you sign on the dotted line. Just my two cents. I got screwed once, don’t wanna let it happen to any of y’all.
Let me clear up one thing. We do not get bonuses for enlisting you guys. We do however receive special duty pay which is paid whether or not we’re successful. I can put in 20 in one month or none, and I’ll still make the same $450 a month.
Next thing. There are recruiters who are only trying to fill jobs the squadron needs. They’re not protecting their applicants, but instead forcing them into jobs. This happens, and I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but it happens. I never forced people into jobs. I did however make sure they were flexible, because at the end of the day, it’s meeting the Air Force needs.
Of course, not everyone will be completely satisfied with how the process works, but this information is the most accurate info you’ll find on the internet. Anything else is subjective or rare cases.
Bro you were job locked and you clearly explained it. What you don't know is that recruiters see ASVAB scores daily. Ranging from 99 to 4. So you feeling entitled is part of the process. Just feel lucky that you were able to find a recruiter that worked with you after you screwed another recruiter. Trust me the recruiter that put you in had a conversation with the recruiter that you screwed, it's apart of the business. The recruiter that put you in took a chance or "rolled the dice" on you as we call it and wad most likely a new recruiter. An experienced recruiter would of kept it moving on you. I'm just telling you real facts. Thank God you didn't scrt8the new recruiter.

As someone who's been through it before I agree with everything he's saying except one thing. If there's a job you really want don't settle for anything else. As a recruiter they will try to fill the high demand jobs first. Don't just settle for a job the recruiter recommends odds are you'll regret it because it's not what you wanted.

Oh you gotta call or text them back. Sometimes these recruiters are super busy, and are focused on the applicants they are working right now. Sometimes you just gotta let them know they should make you a priority.
You do this by hitting them back up, letting them know you have your birth certificate, drivers license, social security card and diploma ready to go. Now all you need to do is schedule an appointment. Recruiters love applicants who are proactive. Give that a try and see what happens.

I am Army retired and a Disabled Vet. Thank you for your video. I disagree with not sticking to your job’s list. Do not take a job you do not desire, you will regret taking it…. I recommend WAITING until your desired job comes open. At the end of the day, you may NEVER see that recruiter again. I also was a recruiter in the civilian world. The recruiters have to meet a quota as well.

For all the high school graduates thinking about joining - DO NOT misconstrue the idea of "job locked" with a "list of PREFERRED jobs". I recommend anyone interested to have at least 5 jobs you are actually interested in. Put those jobs down and wait until one of your preferred jobs comes up. Beware of scare tactics and DO NOT be forced/tricked into mechanical or electrical fields unless you absolutely want that specific job.
For example: some recruiters will say, "Sorry those AFSC's are not being contracted to anyone for the rest of the year. Your only choice is [x] AFSC. Know that if you don't pick an AFSC soon you will be kicked out of the DEP."
There’s some truth in this. Once you create a job list, you do not have to change it. You are entitled to wait until you receive one of the jobs on your list.
However, some squadrons have policies that won’t let you list jobs they’re not hiring for. Also, all squadrons have the “1 year in the DEP” policy. So if you’re not matched to a job within a year, you’ll be DEP discharged.
So in summary, this advice is case by case. But not bad advice, just won’t work everywhere.

Also, being DEP discharged is not the end of the world. You can find another way if you're willing to wait.

I pretty much got the job that I wanted in the AF. I was stationed in Europe for 8 years and pretty much loved it in the electronics communications maintenance field. Did a lot of touring all over Europe during my vacation time and some off time. But this was during the Cold War days. When the Cold War ended a lot of air bases and air stations closed down. Wonder if there are any bases or air stations still exist in Europe. I retired after 20 years of service in the AF.
There are a few Air Force bases in Europe. Rammstein is one of them. I have a friend stationed there and she's enjoying her time in the Air Force.

I spoke to an Air Force recruiter yesterday for the reserves. I didn't realize that the military no longer take people as they are anymore. You gotta be at specific BMI and body fat and practically be medication-less. I was like I will scrub toilets and drive the bus. I will never put a person down for trying to take care of their family. I was like okay man 1 weekend a month and two weeks a year you betcha. That was a hard pill to swallow. My lifestyle choices kept me from opportunity to give my wife and kids a boost. I have 3 undergraduate college diplomas. Officer could be on the table but they are super strict now. If they are willing to take ages up to 42 now I thought maybe.

After 2 years of ROTC I decided I wanted to be an engineer more than an officer, so I dropped out of the program. To this day, I consider it one of my top 5 mistakes.
As a 31 year old male. I want to change my life. I was original permanently medical disqualified for fine muscle tremors, adhd, and inability to do a duck walk . I also got a misdemeanor harrassment kick and shoving charge at my work after a fellow employee pushed me, that is going to be dismissed in a year after I completed the 40 hours for community service in 2020. I have gone to trade school. I know it’s a lot to overcome but I want so desperately to change my life and the Air Force can give me the chance
Anything is possible, but those muscle tremors are gonna be hard to work unless you can prove that medical condition and the other ones are completely gone.
Also, if you were on probation (I don’t know if you were or not) because of the incident at work, you have 90 days after your probation ends to start the process. Hope this helps.

The USAF Medical System lines up very well with the civilian job market better than any other. If you are interested in the medical field the AF is the best way to go by far. I was in civilian healthcare for two decades and many military jobs are poor fits in most hospitals/EMT systems.

Great content, I have been using some of your videos to guide my sister with her questions towards joining the Air Force. I have a question for myself though, do you happen to know the process for cross branching? I'm an enlisted IT2/E5 in the Navy and I've been trying to find instructions or whatever would govern this type of process. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
If you’re trying to do it while serving, you’ll need to coordinate with your career advisor and get a conditional release. If you’re waiting until you get out then joining, you’d want to set yourself up. Meaning have a good PT test, good DD-214 with a good reenlistment code. All of your training records from your job and tech schools. Your medical records and enlisted performance reports.
Your recruiter will first try to “direct to duty” you, meaning you go back in to a similar job as the one you did in the navy. If they don’t have a direct to duty job for you, then you’d be on the cross training list. That list is very slim, and can take awhile before they find you a job.
Unless you went guard or reserve, they have a ton of jobs for prior service. But active duty, it’s a long and slow process. I hope this helps.

I went to a AF recruiter and the time we were talking she would ask me if I had any question, and I couldn’t think of any while I was their or even before my appointment. She asked me a couple of times but, I didn’t really have any but she still was very informative. I felt bad I didn’t have any question for her, I didn’t want to look like I wasn’t interested. Tried reaching out to her to ask one question but haven’t been able to reach her, the call goes straight to voicemail. I’ve wish I seen this video before going to my recruiter but I’m still working on joining and studying over math to get a good ASVAB score, I can’t stand math.
The recruiters that I've spoken with are the resistant ones (Air Force active duty).
Thanks for the advice! I'm just starting the process now. I have to admit I am really hoping for a cyber-sec position as that is my long-term life goal, but I have a relevant Bachelors and hold certifications in the field (Network+, Security+, Server+, GSEC).

The only tattoo you can have on your hand is one ring tattoo on one finger. If it’s not that it’s disqualifying. You can get tattoos removed though if you’re ok with that.
Thinking of joining at age 33 next year. Have a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and minor in CS. I was thinking of doing OTS but that is a long wait (and very competitive) plus I didn't know about the officer recruiter and enlisted recruiter. Should i find an officer recruiter now? Do you know of an easier way to look at the jobs the air force has than the official website. It makes it hard to see what each one is and keep track of what you're looking at. I would appreciate a list rather than all the filter buttons that are difficult to deal with.
I am leaning heavily toward linguist but I would love to explore all options.

Maybe I’m crazy but I am interested in law enforcement on the civilian side and I want Security Forces. I have little to no interest in anything else the Air Force has to offer. If I show my recruiter 5 or 6 other MOS that I don’t care for should I just settle? That sounds like a bullshit idea. I want what I want, this is potentially 4-6 years of my life
I wish I had a recruiter who wanted to recruit me. My recruiter would rather ghost me for weeks for no reason.
Search around your area and see if there’s any other Air Force recruiters who are more available to work with you. That might help.

Just a kind correction, the Korean language program runs 64 weeks at DLIFLC.
I guess I could be "job locked" then...I want to be a pilot. I have wanted to be a pilot as long as I can remember. I have even gone to school for it majoring in Aviation Technical Science. I would not go to the Air Force if I could afford civilian flight school but unfortunately that's not the case. I don't want to settle for some lower level position like a chef on the base for the next six years. I don't care if I'm flying C-130's or F-22's I just want to fly. I spent four years in college to be an officer and I know I can score very highly on the ASVAB. I don't really understand the issue??
I imagine my comment will most likely be deleted but I have a lot of people family/friends in the Air Force and saying that you should just deal with the job they give you is bad advice, if it’s something you plan to do for the next 4-8 years it should be something that you want to do. I understand that it’s a recruiters job to recruit but to put someone into something that they can’t stand for years is more selfish than trying to help.
Thanks, I have my 1st meeting with my recruiter on tuesday sep 8th! my top selection is fire protection, so at this point I just need to look at 6 other jobs that fit my preference.
That’s awesome you’re going to see a recruiter. I will say this, fire protection is one of the most sought after careers in the Air Force. Which mean it’s difficult to get. So make sure you when listing the other jobs, they are things you’d like to do, because you’d most likely get one of those, unless you’re extremely lucky. Either way, you’ll be fine, but I’m hoping you get your number 1. 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
JodywithaWhy my son meet a recluirte already took the ASVAD SCORE 82 . Then they asked for a lot info he send it because everything now is by the phone and they say to wait . Wait what ??? There is this recruiter from the Army who is very interested on him because his score ,my son lives in Fl and that recluirte is station in New York and said he can recruit him. Does the Air Force do the same thing ?? Because the Air Force recruiter in Brandon Fl , Tampa area look like they don’t want help . Or do their jobs . Thanks
Congrats on that score. That’s huge. But if he’s out of high school, he can work with another recruiter. Sometimes, and especially in a place like Florida, they’re so overwhelmed with business. Doesn’t mean they don’t want to work him, but instead it could mean they looking for the time. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Just take the test and see what jobs you can qualify for. After that you need to research those jobs and find out about openings. Do they still have open enlistments? Back in my day I enlisted in the General field and got my job assignment near the end of BMT. No matter what job you get the Air Force will change your life. And I am betting it will be for the better.
They still have open enlistments. They call them aptitude areas now. But they’re basically still the same thing. However there are a lot less aptitude areas than actual jobs, so that’s a plus.

Thank you for watching. I don’t know a recruiter in Long Island, but I’ll tell you this. Security Forces is the biggest career field the Air Force has. So generally it’s one of the easiest jobs to get into. Still no guarantee though, because he has to have all the right qualifications.

I want to join. I just have several obstacles that I'm currently working on. ( weight and child care) I used to teach at a technical school and the vast majority of the alumni were former military. They inspired me. If anyone has tips on asvab, that would be great.
If I don’t qualify for the job I want, do I still have to swear in?
Is rotc a requirement to join or is it just a head start and basic training will teach you everything you need to know about the military and terms ?

Thank you for your informative videos. My son is graduating high school in 18 days and is in the enlisting process. He is currently a member of the Air Force JROTC at his school. It's his first year in the program and his instructor promoted him as Flight Commander due his ability to being a leader from playing sports. He has already taken the ASVAB test and got a score of 86 on the first try. He's a very tech savvy young man. I was wondering if he would be eligible for cyber security and IT jobs which is his choice career path. He has already filled out the long application. His recruiter is trying to setup his interview and prepare him to go to MEPS. Is Texas the only location for BMT? Again thank you for your videos! 🙌🏽
San Antonio is the only Basic Training location for the Air Force.
I would love to come off well-rounded, but my true and strongest specialty is language. I have been a polyglot and language learner since I was a kid and I am currently in college getting a degree in Modern Languages with a concentration in Russian. In addition, I speak 4 other languages fluently. Having said that, would I still be crossing a line with my recruiter if I pushed/waited to get my dream job as a Cryptologic Language Analyst?
Not really. Because that’s a hard job to qualify for and we’re always looking. However, you need to be open to other jobs as well, because if you don’t qualify for linguist, what then?? A recruiter won’t work you if all you wanna do is linguist. Because if you fail the dlab or don’t qualify, then it’ll be a waste of time for everyone. So just be open, but if you pass and qualify, they’ll definitely work with you and get you a linguist job.

Whats the details for how often administration jobs become available? I'm hoping for personnel. Hoping for a miracle that'll allow me to leave by Jan. Meeting with my recruiter finally next week. Took my asvab in highschool earlier this year and scored a 69. Got clearance from my neurologist because I had absence seizures in early childhood. Hopefully I get a MEPS date soon.
I’ll be honest. With a 69 on the ASVAB, it’ll be really hard to get an administrative job, because you tested so high. Not only that, those jobs are very limited, so it makes it that much harder. Not saying it’s impossible, but it’s unlikely.
Why not look into like an intel job. They do a lot of admin work, but they also have a cool mission which allows them to be involved with a lot of the current events happening in the world right now.

Jody brother doing my own research like you said, I got a question now lol. When choosing the jobs you want before BMT, out of the choices the applicant gave go they get notified the job they got before or during BMT
So I'm thinking about joining the Air Force with TACP listed as my #1 choice; I have 90+ credit hours towards pre-med that kinda morphed into programming near the end of my time in college. I am 30 y/o and am in the best shape of my life, but have been searching for fulfilling work for some time now after dropping out of college to see to my ageing/sick parent(s).
I was wondering if Jody or anyone with experience and/or thoughtful opinions would like to weigh in. I am tech literate and know my way around computer operating systems and multiple programming languages, but also enjoy working with my hands and am familiar with a range of modern weapons and tactics. PJ or anything on the medical side is out of the question.
You can go multiple different ways. The special warfare careers are challenging and rewarding. However we no longer let you go directly into a specific Special Warfare career. You have to go to through a pipeline first, after basic training and depending on how well you do there, that’ll determine which special warfare career you go into.
Also, with your computer background you could look into our cyber careers. One that kind of stuck out to me as I was reading is computer systems programming. @@Jodywithawhy Thank you for the suggestions and the pertinent information. Special warfare and JTAC definitely caught my attention while researching and I recently ordered Dana Pittard's book "Hunting the Caliphate" to get a bit more insight into the career.
I'd like to strike a nice balance between the physical and cerebral as I've performed as a high level athlete (ice hockey) much of my adult life and thoroughly enjoy being on my feet as well as making solutions in the abstract.
Knowing now that selection for special warfare school isn't done until after basic certainly has put my mind at ease. Thank you again.

Or what can I do to know exactly what's going on or what to do? I don't want to complain on here but my recruiter certainly doesn't know much. The process is kinda messy, answers provided are not always correct, missing info that I've provided and finding out everyday things that are wrong last mn, have an appointment to find out on that day that they went on vacation(even my job list was messed up which i got after meps anyways). Please give me some input. Sorry for the rant but just want things to go just right.
Oh no. That’s terrible. At this point your best bet is to ask to speak with their flight chief and address your problems. If you try to switch recruiters, the next recruiter will most likely send you back to your original recruiter because of the situation. I hope this helps. Hi Jody! I got myself into a predicament. A couple years ago I went into a recruiting office and filled out some paper work. I lied about having eczema because I haven’t had it in a while. I recently had a flare, and I’m thinking about joining again. The eczema isn’t bad, but I want to tell my recruiter about it. Am I able to change the answers in my paperwork? Idky i lied in the first place 😭 I have never went to MEPS yet as well. I don’t take any medicine for the eczema.

Okay I know we shouldn’t be job locked but what if we have less then 7 or 10 and only have 3 or 4. I mean let’s say the max 10 how much would you like the 10th choice. I just think you shouldn’t be job locked but at the same time don’t go for a job you can put up with but don’t really want to do
Look at the Air Force like a car. When you go to buy one, the number 1 question you should ask is does it drive? After that you start looking at things like size, Bluetooth, back up cam, color and rims etc...
All that extra stuff are equivalent to the Air Force benefits and a job in the Air Force is like rims of a car. They look really good and are attractive, but they’re nothing if the vehicle doesn’t drive. The Air Force is the driving factor for your vehicle. Everything you’ll learn (leadership, stress management, time management, communication skills) will take you far in life, and you learn that in any job.
As a matter of fact, the way the Air Force is structured, you will constantly change jobs. You start out doing the basic job, then you’ll eventually move into a leadership position teaching new airman how to do it. The longer you stay in, the more of a leader you become and the less you’re working your original basic job.
So I always recommend don’t get caught on a job. That’ll only most likely frustrate you later.

I want to join but I have no experience with any jobs listed in the air force and I don't know what would be a good job for me. I want to join just because I want to do something with my life and challenge myself, open a new chapter in my life etc. I do have an associates degree in aviation costumer relations but I never worked in that field, I just went to school for it and graduated that's it.
I didn’t know what I wanted to do either. At all. I just knew I needed change. I would recommend you take the practice asvab and see what you potentially would qualify for. Once you know what kind of scores you’ll have, then you can narrow it down to what you’d be interested in.

Join the Space Force! Must be able to pass a background check for eventually working in a top secret environment. Nobody messes with top secret workers. Colorado is an ok place to be assigned because it is headquartered there. If you cannot keep a secret don’t apply.
Hi. Very informative video. I have a question, when would be the best time to contact a recruiter? I was planning to make an appointment with one in February, however due to certain current obligations, I would not be able to leave for anything until about five months from now. Would meeting with a recruiter right now be too early? I understand recruiters are always busy and most videos make it seem like they would want someone who is readily available to get everything done. I couldn't find an answer to this anywhere.
You can meet now. However you’d have to be very clear that you couldn’t leave until 5 months. Meeting now would help you understand if you’re qualified or not, and whether or not you’d have to study for the asvab.

Unfortunately yes. Because they don’t pick what special warfare career you do until you’re in the Air Force. You have to prove to cadre you’re the right fit for PJ. Or end up in another special warfare career.
