I've almost wrapped up another video discussing this because I felt it best to dive into it in a bit more detail - hopefully I can release that in the next few days, but essentially I did evaluate TrueNAS, OMV and Unraid but I felt like I wouldn't use 95% of their feature set. I don't want RAID (or their equivalent) because I mainly want the maximum total storage capacity possible - and RAID would reduce this. I also don't think I'd benefit from snapshots for example. Basically I'm happy enough tinkering myself, and I still have some data redundancy (media is still on the SD cards) and data protection (via nightly off-site backups). I have thought about the decision a lot though, and would welcome comments. I'll try and get that other video out soon too, so I can expand on these points a bit more 🙂
Man, now I really want to build a home server... Any reason not to go with windows if all I want is to use it as a JellyFin/PleX & media storage server? I have 0 experience with linux or anything non-Windows.
Heh, glad to have given you the spark 🤣 Windows would work fine too - I agree. The NTFS file system is pretty good, and Windows has got a lot better in recent years for this sort of use. And especially if that's what you're most familiar with, there's no need to get confused with a random Linux distro IMO 🙂
WHy didn't you use UNRaid or OpenMediaVault?
It would be simpler to setup using the GUI, and gives different options to setup things.

@whatwhat-777 I released the more detailed explanation of my choices here: ruclips.net/video/XVRVIorYssw/видео.html

I as told it is pronounced Deb-ian. It comes from the names of the creator of Debian, Ian Murdock, and his wife, Debra.
@@DrenDor100 ahhh that's interesting, thanks. That's good to know 🙂
