AMD Ryzen Explained: 5000 vs 6000, 7000 vs 8000 & The 9000 Series
AMD have been quite busy releasing new CPUs in recent years, with FOUR new microarchitecture launches in the last four years alone. But what's the real difference between CPUs like the Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series? And should you buy the new 9000 series Zen5 line-up, or wait for the "enhanced" 10000 series?
I answer this questions and more in this video, including discussing the good and bad points to the "upgraded" 6000, 8000 and 10000 Ryzen series launches that introduced a range of new APUs to the market.

Why Debian+Samba Beats TrueNAS & Unraid (For My Purposes)

My Homelab NAS is finally up and running. I have moved all the video content over to it, and this is actually the first video that I produced/edited entirely over my home network. Noice! The Six Ways Of Powering Graphics Cards
Просмотров 13121 день назад
Powering our GPUs (graphics cards) used to be EASY. If it was a low or mid range card, you could just stick it into the motherboard's PCIe slot and it would be solely powered by the 75 watts the motherboard would supply to it. When cards got a bit more powerful, you could then supply an extra PCIe cable to it - giving an extra 150 watts (or so) of power. But GPUs have now got a LOT more powerfu...

I just want to know if the review I'm watching is from a human or robot. Robots can process info a lot faster than a human so the review might not apply as much to me. I am a human by the way. I dated a robot once. Didn't work out. We just couldn't connect. I tried but you can't just put anything into a usb c port and that is all she had. I think I might have hurt myself. Anyway nice review robot man.

    Once you start getting into terabytes-worth of data, the chances of undetected storage errors due to "bit-rot" or memory flips (much less likely if you're using ECC RAM and a compatible motherboard, but few home users have those) are significant enough to make ZFS the way to go. The fact that you have backups running won't help since you won't know you're backing up corrupted data. Similar to you, I set up my home NAS with Debian, 10 GbE, CIFS/Samba, 48TB of storage and ZFS for some piece of mind that the bits I'm storing are what I think they are...

      @@TechOverwrite Part of the reason I'm mentioning it is that I just recently had ZFS notify me of a checksum error in a large file (first time in around 5 years of running on ZFS). I have a monthly scrub operation scheduled, and it caught it and fixed it. Also: your concern about the overhead of the checksum operation isn't really a thing to worry about on modern hardware. In your configuration, the 10 GbE network presents a much higher bottleneck than any processing overhead ever will. You'd get a big bump in performance by switching to 25 GbE (which is getting cheaper, but certainly not "cheap" yet).

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite День назад

      @@OscarFowler thanks that's really interesting, and it's great that the checksum error was detected. Sounds like you have a great setup here 🙂 Yes switches are difficult - even 10 Gbe has felt like a big upgrade, it's surprising how quickly the various costs can add up.

      I've almost wrapped up another video discussing this because I felt it best to dive into it in a bit more detail - hopefully I can release that in the next few days, but essentially I did evaluate TrueNAS, OMV and Unraid but I felt like I wouldn't use 95% of their feature set. I don't want RAID (or their equivalent) because I mainly want the maximum total storage capacity possible - and RAID would reduce this. I also don't think I'd benefit from snapshots for example. Basically I'm happy enough tinkering myself, and I still have some data redundancy (media is still on the SD cards) and data protection (via nightly off-site backups). I have thought about the decision a lot though, and would welcome comments. I'll try and get that other video out soon too, so I can expand on these points a bit more 🙂

I always undervolt GPU without losing performance(same core clocks) but by doing it reduce the GPU power draw to 180-190w depending on game or FPS limitations. If I cap the FPS it further decrease the power consumption to around 150w. Do you suggest me using only one cable and pigtail as I always undervolt for better thermals and low power consumption. And for some reason, only very expensive copper radiators are shown as cooling options, although there are many of them on the market, for example, simple aluminum ones. How hard is it to send an email saying your yearly renewal is coming up and if you do nothing you will be automatically billed in say 1 or 2 weeks so you have time to react if this isn't what you want. I've seen some companies do this and don't get why it isn't standard practice across the entire industry. @TechOverwrite 8 дней назад

      The Montech fans look pretty sweet, that's a good choice 🙂 So I think you should be fine here without a fan hub - it looks like the fans *do* support daisy chaining yes, and that should be fine to run those 3 fans off those headers. Cable managing will get a little messy yes, but worse case you can buy PWM and/or ARGB splitter cables and use them to hide things away a little more. But you could always see how it goes after you get into the build itself.

    Why do you say that people who game or browse the internet don’t need virtualization if you also say that virtualization improves security in Windows? Isn’t better security good for everyone? Or are the potential security risks bigger than the benefits?

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 8 дней назад

      Good questions, I think I could have been clearer here for sure. Technologies like memory integrity are pretty awesome and will harden security for sure, which is a good reason to have virtualization enabled. However the (slight) risk is when someone enables virtualization but doesn't enable member integrity or similar techs - this might then mean there's slightly more risk than reward here.

    Let's see if I get this correct with GeForce now. When you don't have lots of storage and enough RAM to run a high demanding game, you just can install it on the rented rig from GeForce now? And how long will the installation take? Because you still have to use your connection no?

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 9 дней назад

      Yes that's correct - you could buy a cheap laptop or desktop with barely any disk space or RAM, but run it through GeForce Now and play all the latest games 🙂 Games installs are instant, because the Now service already has the games downloaded. You sometimes have to press an "Install" button (which seems odd lol), but it then instantly installs. Basically, games can be played immediately.

    Sorry to hear about your experience and it does seem to be very common. I remember being told that computers would make all these accounting issues be easier and more efficient and use less paper. Before computers, it would take weeks for your “Please cancel my subscription “ to make it through the system. In 2024 that sounds crazy. Computers would also reduce costs but prices are still going up. It appears that many companies use these “policies” as a way to confuse their customers into over paying for their services. Adobe is currently being sued for their licensing practices. I will say that Cloudflare is doing a great job helping to protect the Internet and I really appreciate all they do. Why would they throw away all that goodwill on this easily resolved issue?

      Thanks and great points, I agree all round. Yes Adobe seem particularly bad here I agree - while I like their software, I'm also glad to see them finally be sued for their practices 😞 It's definitely frustrating all round and I agree that Cloudflare are generally a force for good. I think they probably just struggle with the external (shareholder) type pressure sometimes - it's not always easy to balance between doing genuine good and maximizing profit, I guess.

    This sort of "ongoing contract" should be made illegal , regarding the amount of people you have to talk to, I had something similar with "Three" the phone company i got a Wi-Fi dongle sim from them as an emergency Wi-Fi hotspot for my kids and long story short i didn't inform them within 30 days of the end of the contract that i wasn't going to be renewing I told them a couple of weeks before the end , when i did i was told to just wait till the day after it expired and all would be fine , i did this and they said "No you haven't given us 30 days notice" so they tried to say i had to pay 2 months extra!! Now the money wasn't important but the principle was what bugged me , so i proceeded and talked to a second person and they have their "script" to follow , i accept that, BUT i was on one and i tried again and again Finally i had to use my trump card and mentioned that i was highly unhappy and was going to get the "Ombudsman" involved!! All companies and services have their own Ombudsman and ALL companies are terrified of them (its really bad for their image) Anyway as soon as i mentioned the Ombudsman they got a manager in the chat and suddenly i had a "gesture of goodwill" and they refunded me the cost of the first month (technically the 13 month of my 12 month contract) and closed my account !! I just bought a 6900 XT and it has three 8 pin connectors. Problem is, my PSU only has two pigtail cables. Meaning 4 connections in total. How do I solve this issue? Buy a new PSU? The TDP is 300W. I heard each cable supports up to 150W and the motherboard PCIE slot gives 75W. So, with that in mind, that's: 150W+150W+75W Total of 375W. Is it alright to pigtail the last connection in this case?

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 10 дней назад

      That's an awesome GPU, nice purchase 🙂 Yes I agree with you, you should be fine to use two separate cables (and a pigtail for the final connection) to hit the 300W TDP. That should be fine.

  • @ericw.3149

    The way I see the 12 pin connector, it connects to the graphics and two 8 pin connectors to the power supply unit. What if I need to flip the cable 180 degrees (no adapters or additional cables) and plug the two 8 pin connectors into my 7900xt graphics card, and the 12 pin connector to my power supply unit as it has a dedicated 12pin insert for 600watts. Would that be OK without any issues? I mean, it's literally the same thing supposedly, i just want to use the cables 180° in the reverse direction and both ends have the proper connection ends going directly into where they need to go. Let me know if this will work?

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 10 дней назад

      That's a great question - unfortunately I'm not 100% sure, none of my PSUs support this so I can't easily check their manuals or try it out. If it was me, I'd probably check the manual or email the PSU customer service team to check first. In theory it 'should' work if it fits, but I wouldn't want to say that for sure. Great question though, I'm curious now 🤔

    I have rx 7700 xt and it is crashing now all the time and it was working fine. This card require 250w max and I connect the 2 cables and one port in the PSU. Could that be the reason? Or its just faulty? Btw its not thr drivers, its not thr system, I built this pc with good cabling connection and with good air flow, temps are nice too.

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 12 дней назад

      Ugh sorry to hear it, it sounds like you have a good build and GPU so it's annoying when crashes start. Is it crashing only when gaming, or when the PC is idle too? Crashes when you're stressing the GPU (i.e. when gaming or video rendering) could definitely be due to using just 1 port in the PSU. But crashes at idle is likely to be due to something else.

    • @clomixgaming8748
      @clomixgaming8748 12 дней назад

      @TechOverwrite It crashes in games and under load, and also when I am in Google chrome or Windows! Temps are good, watt usage is 249w under load which is good at 100% usage. It only lasted 10 days and then this happen. Should I worry about the one port thing? I mean its not more than 250w, isn't it?

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 9 дней назад

      One port could mean only 225w can be supplied (depending on the cable guage), so it could be a worry - i.e. your current usage might be stretching it a bit. It's hard to say for sure though - it might also be faulty drivers or GPU unfortunately.

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 12 дней назад

      Thanks 🙂 That's a good question. Many LEDs have rated lifespans of 10,000 - 50,000 hours, so I guess you would be limiting their lifespan a bit if you run the PC (and its LEDs) 24/7. However many fan/LED strip software should allow you to turn the LEDs off, which could be worth doing if you do plan on running the PC all the time. If you were just leaving it off overnight as a one-off though, I wouldn't worry. An extra 8-10 hours of LED runtime won't impact the lifespan too much.

    I'm a little weird when it comes to backups. I wrote a simple script and run it daily, backing up my important data to one of my NVMes, then once a month or so I backup everything to 2 external HDDs, again with a script, and I always keep the important things backed up on One Drive as well, making use of the Family account stuff you mentioned. Not the greatest system, but it works well enough. I should probably get a NAS and simplify things but it's hard to justify the expense...

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 12 дней назад

      That sounds like a great backup system, basically the 3-2-1 strategy. It sounds like you have a good mix of local and external backups. A NAS is nice, although there certainly is a 'Synology tax' (or QNAP tax, etc) so rolling your own backup solution and/or your own Homelab NAS is probably the way to go IMO.

    Silly question but why do you keep your cctv files? i have 6 cameras and a 1TB drive keeps the recordings for at least 2 weeks before they are written over , my thinking is that if i havent noticed that something bad has happened and i havent noticed in 2 weeks then its not that bad , Im just curious if i should start keeping my files for longer. I really dont like the idea of my cameras having access to the net , to the point i have a physical rotary switch that i just click to update the time , i am not confident enough to write rules for my PFSense , and a physical switch cant be hacked i guess

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 15 дней назад

      It's definitely a fair question, not silly at all 😊 I only keep them for 2 weeks or so too. I need to review the quality settings, but they're 3k and 4k cameras and a decent bitrate, so they mainly use up a lot of disk space. I would like to store a month's worth of footage though, because if I was ever away for a week or so, I kinda feel like 2 weeks might not be enough (for example if a neighbour pops round after a week or so to say 'oh by the way, while you were away this happened..' and that footage has just been deleted). I get your point though, and it's cool that you use a switch for your system.

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite 17 дней назад

      Good question, so in general using 2 cables (and 1 pigtail, for 3 overall PCIe connections) would work fine for many GPUs - it would supply at least 375W of power. 🙂 The only 'unknown' is the extension cables - higher quality ones (or ones from Corsair) would be fine, but random 'no name' extension cables could potentially cause you problems. Hard to say though. I would just run with the 2 cables and pigtail, boot up and see how you get on. As long as you aren't seeing crashes/freezes in game, it should be okay IMO. Good luck on your build 🙂
