  • I've been wanting to drive this thing for years and just recently had the time and energy put some work in to try and get it running. Is today the day I get to rip this ridiculous machine around? Lots of power, no brakes, no problems!

    Fingers crossed you get it running. I plowed snow in those and they are fun. Those rubber tracks hate it when there’s no snow… so good call. Seriously though , they are the crotch rockets of tanks ….. yet speed is replaced with torque. It’s like driving a world war 2 tank that’s massively top heavy & only stops when the motor says so! Old school perfection yet forgotten.

    I used to own a 1964 Snow-Cat. Wish I still had it. When I start an engine that hasn't been ran for years, I give it a shot of ether, but only crack the throttle a quarter open. Once it starts, I let the engine warm up a bit at low RPM's, then I start playing with the throttle. Carb'd engines run lean when cold, especially at full throttle. The fuel puddles (condenses) in cold intake runners. The intake sits on the exhaust manifold or has exhaust crossovers in the intake manifold that provides heat to vaporize the droplets that the carb spits out. I couldn't see if the carb had an accelerator pump. I realize the function of the automatic choke on vehicles enrichens the fuel to air ratio for cold starts, but the Snow-Cat has a manual choke.

    Hey man you probably have a stuck valve or two, or maybe some pieces of acorn lodged under a valve, keep up and you'll get it and she'll be running sweet. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida 🌞

    So if I could offer some advice when trying to restart old equipment... always take a compression tester... any low cylinders will show stuck or burnt valves...use a dead blow hammer on valves to free them before you try to start the engine... when the flame was coming outta the exhaust that means that a exhaust valve was open when the ignition happened

    • @ranwhenpark3d
      @ranwhenpark3d  3 года назад

      Agreed, though, low compression is not necessarily stuck valves...probably more likely stuck or trashed rings and or headgasket failure. More importantly though, this is a flat head so I can't get to the valves without taking the head off or pulling the tappet cover.

    • @gokartracers
      @gokartracers 3 года назад

      True. Also a touch of Marvel Mystery oil to the valve stems will seep into the guides to help loosen quickly as you tap the valves. I also put it in the oil to help loosen the lifters when it starts pumping oil into them.

    Those old 217/230 Dodge L6's had a sandwich type copper-backed head gasket that could actually be reused once or twice if you take time to clean it up nicely and coat it with some Copper-Coat sealant before you put it back together. It would be to your advantage to pull the head and free up whichever valves are stuck before you burn up 2 or 3 starters. Stuck valves are very common on these engines, especially when running them on unleaded gas. The lead in the old fuel acted as a lubricant for the valve stems. Just an FYI..😉 (P.S. Look up your torque specs and torque pattern B4 you start) Most all of that is online.🙂
