  • REVan Evan takes a close look at Jim and Matt Morgan's 1967 Shelby GT500. This is a wicked-cool NHRA-legal Stock Eliminator Mustang and we caught up with the Morgan's running at Numidia Dragway in Top Stock at the Class Racer Nationals. Top Stock is a heads-up class for AA/A/B/C Stockers running on the 8.25 per lb weight break which is in between A and B.

      This is not a Cobra Jet. It IS a 428. These were a one off that Shelby did for 1967 for the GT500. They were based on the 428 Thunderbird engine. The 428 Cobra Jet, which came out a year later had quite a few differences from this engine that made them very competitive in Super Stock racing.

      @@460duck Aw, crap. I guess it is. The Stock and Super Stock rules seem to be a LOT different than what they used to be. Should have know better. The 428 that came in the original '67 GT500's had a 2-4 barrel medium riser intake on it.

    Late 1970's I bought a 428Cj motor from a high school friend. Paid $385 for it and that included the shaker hood scoop.
    Installed it in my 1976 Ford 4x4 in place of the weak 360 (another FE block).
    That was a really fun truck. Legendary in my area for making it all the way through the big mud hole by the Arkansas river.

    I was just up at Epping for the NHRA Race Month and Half ago and there was a Red 67 GT 500 with a 428 CJ believe it it was a C/SA but I'm not certain might've been a B/SA, had a C-6 and it was leaving with big wheelies every launch. Ending up talking to the guy in the pits, was a very nice guy, had the Shelby Mustang for years. Not sure how far he went in competition on Sunday but was amazed how it launched, he had those Cal Trac Bars with the Mono Leaf Springs. Car was leaving so hard that it was actually on T.V. for the Highlights during the Qualifying Show on Fox Sports 1.

I race my 2015 Ecoboost and it’s still over $70,000 just for the car. I’m sticking with A/S, anything faster would need certain mods and devalue the car.

    • @revanevan
      @revanevan  2 года назад

      Actually a good question. NHRA rates every engine to establish the power to weight ratio. Most Stock/Super Stock engines make way more power when compared to the NHRA rating.

    • @2429scj
      @2429scj Год назад

      @@revanevan Evan just to follow up on the horsepower rating in Stock. The car manufacturers were required to provide a shipping weight for each engine /chassis combo back in the day. Then NHRA added the 170 pounds for driver to get race weight. The shipping weight is an absolute and cannot change, the engine/chassis combo cannot be lighter. So back in the day you spent a lot of time looking at the classification guide to see if the engine you wanted to run was available in a plainer version i.e. a Fairlane instead of a Fairlane GT. The new rules allow you to move up or down one class from the original class so now you can run the GT I agree with you about the horsepower numbers being higher than the factory rating, I raced a C/S1971 Mustang Mach1 429/375 hp factory rating factored to 380 hp, the car had to weigh 3590 lbs. That was during the 70's and 80's and early 90's then NHRA took 20 hp off the engine but the car still had to weigh 3590 with driver so the car moved from C to D, 360 x9.5 + 170 equals 3590 The weight didn't change just the class. I LOVE STOCK IN CASE YOU CAN'T TELL!!!

    Just curious. Jim Morgan's old Red Super Stock Mustang had a 12 bolt Chevy rearend in it if I remember correctly. Do they still do that?? For those that are wondering why you would do that, the 12 bolt is more efficient, in other words less rotating power loss as compared to a Ford 9 inch.

    • @revanevan
      @revanevan  2 года назад

      Some do, some don't. A well-built 9-inch has minimal loss so it's a wash. I also learned that turning a rear by hand is not the same as tuning a rear under a load. If there's any deflection in the housing you get drag and that's near-impossible to measure by hand-turning the rear.

    Nice to see a Ford doing big wheelies and being competitive with the Chebbies. This sure appears to be a clone though, does not have deluxe interior (has standard black dash and door panels), has regular albeit chromed firewall brace (i.e., no export brace), and no fender tag either. “Stock Shelby” for 1967 is also 428 PI (not CJ) with two four barrels. No harm but if not a Shelby, shouldn’t call it one.

My fuel injected 438windsor has 4500 street miles and way bigger street solid roller cam than yours and going on 7 years old and pulls like new to 7200rpm on e85. You need to use better parts.
