  • This interview was SO enlightening and important, I want to share it with EVERYONE . . . Please take a moment to share this with anyone who needs answers about Medicare/Medicare Advantage and/or Preparing for Loss of Life Abroad. These two women helped me to understand both topics better than I ever had. Especially Medicare. All of the rules, requirements and enrollment deadlines can be "dizzying." Please take note of the deadlines mentioned in this video to protect yourself from stiff penalties and possible financial distress in your latter years. Check your Last Will & Testament (or get one drawn up) and have your Power of Attorney and Living Will in tact. Taking a few steps now can save you AND your loved ones grief during what will already be challenging times.
If you are a Black Expat in Panama, BEIP has created an Emergency Contact form that will be helpful to your loved should you suffer a major illness or death while living here. If you want to share your information, please complete this form: forms.gle/JnVi...

Medicare Advantage can only be used overseas for emergency/urgent care. Some hospitals in Panama are billing directly to the Medicare Advantage company, i.e. United Health Care. Traditional Medicare will not cover you overseas/abroad for normal hospital or doctor visits. Unless it is a Gap supplement and that supplement covers you out of the US and then it is only good for so many days. Each plan can be different.

There are cases where you have a major illness and a person with Medicare advantage can end up with a very large bill

I pay $174.70 for Medicare Advantage on social security disability. That amount comes right out of my check. I’m 61. If I have Medicare through SSDI, do I still need to re-enroll in Medicare or will it roll over at 65. I also heard that direct billing just started in some hospitals in Panama for emergencies where an upfront payment will not required.
