Used Gatorskin for 6 years. No punctures and no traction issues because I don’t try to descend and corner like Tom Pidcock. The real problem with them is they are a faff to fit 😅
As a bike shop owner who has literally sold thousands of pairs of Look pedals. How do you mean they are unreliable. I have not ever seen a Look pedal fail. At like $70 the Keos are incredibly good value and the blade Carbons are a great choice for a race pedal.

If you’re on road 1x is pointless. Weight penalty of a fd is minuscule and the range you get is invaluable. Simplicity argument is stupid too, if you can’t get your head around 2 sets of gears you probably need a lobotomy
Weight penalty barely even exists, since what you save on a front derailleur is almost completely offset by the need for a much larger and heavier cassette. 1x rear derailleur is also typically larger and heavier
So we can have 12 gears out back but 2 up front is too many?

I ride a 3x on my 20 year old Trek Too Fuel. Works perfectly and love it. Waiting for it to come back in fashion.
He is right though. The only advantage of 2x is better chain efficiency in lower gears due to avoiding cross chaining, which really only matters in racing. For the actual gears, if you have a 50/34 front, and 11-25 rear, your lowest gear ratio is 34/25 = 1.36. If you go 1x with 50 tooth up front and 11-36 10 speed in the rear, your lowest gear is 50/36 = 1.38. 12 speed groupsets have made the rear gear transitions smoother due to finer incremental steps (although 11 speed were already good enough).
@@marcdaniels9079 Same here on my ~21 year old Litespeed Classic. Don't think it will come back in fashion though...it wasn't in fashion when I got it, it was on the bike shop floor at a good sale price. It's been great for mountain climbs.
Nah man, fuck 2x. For racing, sure, but for all you armchair cyclists 2x is absolutely not necessary.
Depends where you live. I live in a flat area and I almost never use the small ring on my 2x road bike. 1x is more than enough for me. It was even good enough for riding in the Rockies in Canada last summer (1x11, 42t front, 11-46 rear).
In 20-25 years of using Speedplays I have never had an issue with mud in the cleats.
Same here, I have been using Speed play for 25 years and I am a heavier rider. I love the freedom of speed play better.
1x has more cross chain ring than 2x in my opinion
Hi have had three sets of Hunt wheels and I haven't had any issues. The perform well and are great value for money. I rode LEJOG on Hunt's lightest carbon spoke rim brakes wheels and they are still perrfect 6000 miles later. I have used Look pedals for years without any problems. I agree with him on the Gatorskins as they are so slick in the wet.
The lack of awareness of the world outside the 'professional mechanic's' bikeshop is baffling.
2 x is superior in every way and Look pedals that me and many of my friends ride for years are probably one of the most reliable bike components out there.

@@truthseeker8483 nope what. my regular after work ride is climbing this hill twice by my house, i gain 2500ft total going twice and it's about 16 miles. i like being able to go like 20+mph on flat/slight incline, and then being able to climb up the hill which gets to 15% at the steepest part. try doing that on a 1x.
Yep, and 3x is even better! The guy in the video said you only need 1x with 12 speed cassettes, but he never mentioned the terrible cross chaining at the extremities of the cassette and how narrow a 12x chain is making it much weaker than a 6/7/8 speed wide chain and also how accurate the fine tuning has to be to achieve perfect gear changes and operation due to the gaps between gears being so small. I love my 3x on my MTB coz I can go fast on flat paved roads and I can climb my steep hills, without ever experiencing cross ❌ chaining.
@@Silidons91 I live on a 20%+ hill that goes 130 meters/400 ft in under a kilometer/ like half a mile, and regularly go 30 kph/20mph on the flats with 1x. 40t in front and an 11-40 is fine for most people, and I also get by just fine on 23 mph grouprides.
@@Silidons91 You can do that on a 1x. Especially if you ride it regularly and have improved your fitness for the hills.
Kill enve there too expensive even at half the price. Owned Hunt wheels and not one problem with them at a reasonable price. kill 1x because it’s useless and clunky! 2x is way better closer ratios and much easier on steep hills. Basically I disagree with everything Nick likes 😂
Have some marathon plus tyres on my wife's pashley sovereign for years and hundreds of miles now.
Been fitted since new, never changed em, they still look like new lol. Invincible tyres!
I am not a new rider and will stick with my 2X. I do not like the jump between gearing on my bike with 1X setup.
Gravel king 28s with a latex tube are totally amazing on a long distance ride, never had problems with grip in the wet. But I was always riding conservatively. Brilliant tyres and an absolute bargain!
I find myself generally disagreeing with this mechanic.
So for the “average person” 2x isn’t necessary, but what about the rest of us? It’s absolutely necessary for us with bad knees, in fact, I’d love 3x to make a comeback.
The argument against 2x is ridiculous.
Hv never been a fan of 1x.. I get any I change to 2x or 3x

When it came to dtswiss I was meh but I got a cheap pair to go on my gravel/winter bike. Rode for two years with 0 love, like washed my bike 4 times. Went to move the DT swiss on to a new bike expecting to change everything bearing and the bearing were like new 😍😍.
As a track racer, i love racing it, i really do, but i would have to kill that one off first. I love cross more, track has second place in my heart. Followed by STXC. Followed by Gravel followed by Enduro followed by road. I love bikes. But fixed gear has to be first to go, tolerate 2x, love 1x. I use it on virtually everything. I only recently started using a front derailleur on one bike only because i needed more gears one particular day because of extra equipment. Usually, my 42-36 1x can handle anything.
Panaracer Gravel Kings are pretty slippery. Got a bad puncture and replaced them with Vittoria Terreno Mix. Fantastic tyres.
Fixie could make sense if you live in the city and it's totally flat. You're not going up any hills. Good video idea, I'd like it if you made a few more of these. Cheers.
Doh! A fixie in an urban setting is a safety hazard for everyone else. Fail.
@@Dr.Schlitz Pretty much everyone I've seen making fixie riding videos do them in an urban setting. I don't personally ride one. I'm just saying it only makes sense on flat ground.

Another vote for Time pedals. The float and freedom of speedplay but the stability and platform of the shimanos. And their mtb version shed dirt like nothing else on the market
Currently own 5 pairs of Hunt wheels. Selling my only set of DT Swiss. And about to buy another set of Hunt wheels. Also a huge fan of Speedplay, far better than any other road cleet system. 😂🤷🤦
Haven't had too much of an Issue with Speedplays. Agree about time pedals, they were my go to but both cleat and pedal body wear rates are annoying. Speedplay have some bits I would improve & the Pave` version needs to return, but as a TT'er they are more aero and racing crits less prone to pedal strikes, so you can get on the power earlier.

Way back when I started, well first upgrade , was from single speed to 1X 3 , which was a big upgrade, and yes just 3 speed did the job well enough. So admittedly 1x 10,11, 12 is plenty for the average man or woman on the street . And for pure off road where a big gear is never really needed, but for a bike to mix gravel and road, or a road bike in hills, why restrict the range? 2x winds hands down. Plus it avoids those ridiculous big cassette sprockets.
Are Continental RideTour not sold in UK? They are absolutely fabulous on a comuterbike. And often enough half the price as Marathon Plus. When my wife need new tiers on her hollandbike we will put them on that bike too. Okay, you should never put them on a wheel without your tiertool close to you, but beside that they are brilliant!
I did a 100km ride in the rain on gatorskins and didn't find them slipping...maybe because i dont make high wattage lol

from the data I have gathered from my road rides in London I have to admit I don't use the front derailleur much at all I tend to stick it in one and just ride
I use spds for mtb so not skin in the game
and as I am not a roadie as such the tires are all a bit shite compared to my hard tail
As a shop owner the profit margin on Gatorskins is lost when you factor in the :30 of labor it takes to install them. My shop only sells Kenda and Panaracer tires.

Regular Marathons are probably just as good as the Pluses for most people. Not as heavy, better rolling, and still incredibly puncture resistant.

I love 1x but 2x is going to make a come back, they are not perfect but solve an awful lot of 1x compromises.
I ride Crankbrothers pedals on everything and have loved them since my first and current pair in 2008.

I'm riding two kill items - hunt alloy wheels and gatorskins (living in a city with lots of broken glass, bad surfaces, road debris etc). My Hunts have stood up to everything I can throw at them but I have no experience with their carbon wheels, which is what I assume most people are buying from them. I wouldn't spend the money for their carbon wheels vs other manufacturers though.
As for gatorskins... yeah I hate mine now. I have low-sided my bike in the rain on those slippery little bastards and will soon replace them with something softer and tubeless , perhaps Pirelli P-zero 4S TLR or Conti GP5000 (hoping to avoid punctures but hey. we'll see.)
How about we make Time pedals platform but durability wise its shimano 😏😏😏

How are they better in your view say compared to Look and Shimano? What would be the key improvements over the other two brands that stick out to you?
I was using keo blade but an early edition that were actually quite small. The time pedals are about 100% wider (I'll acknowledge the newer blade are almost as wide as the time xpro). Having said that, the clip in process of the time is much smoother and I presume that's because the mechanism is in an open position. However, even on the easiest setting, it feels so much better locked in than the keo. Additionally, the cleats are foot specific and if you swap them, it alters your q factor.

Ksyrium are good, not lightweight set tho but still a good pair of wheels for their price. Quite solid too, I go in light gravel with them

The Atacs shed dirt and clip in no matter what. Time is fantastic across the board
Sorry but i don't agree with your opinion on Hunt wheels. I have a 36/50 wide aero rimbrake wheelset 3 years old, 39000 km and no issues. First set of bearings, one time being trued, rolling like hell. Btw, I'm also a pro mechanic for more than 30 years.

Also from a mechanic, and one of a lot shorter time than you. My 250 pound father ripped one of their axles apart. It's not a good product at the hub, which is arguably the most important part of any wheel given that the rim is any good quality. Im not saying that you are wrong. And im not saying that Hunt is a bad company or even necessarily that they make bad wheels. But the engineering or material should not be shearing off under rider weight. But Hunt carbon rims laced to DT Swiss 350s? Sounds good to me. No problems with me on that. I've not had too many problems if any with DT Swiss. No, just out of his given options, I too, would kill off Hunt because of the hubs. Enve and DT Swiss don't have that weakness.
Same here. No issues whatsoever with the Hunt wheels I’ve had, and same can be said by others I cycle with.
I learned to ride 3x when I was13. It’s not really rocket science…teach people 2x…. FFS 🤦♂️

Enve no longer offers lifetime warranty. It's conditional 5 yrs now.

If you are an elderly rider (like over 70) 1X just doesn't cut it, the jumps are to great
I have 1X8 and it is okay. 12-32t cassette.

Love 1X and Kill 2X 😁Excellent..I built a bike during the lock-downs and went for 1X because I remembered decades ago when I used to ride road bikes what a pain the front derailleur was and as an engineer the front derailleur just appears crude in comparison to a rear derailleur.
That's because you don't know how to setup your bikes 🤷♂Only skill issue.
The front derailleur is never an issue if it is mounted, aligned and fine tuned correctly. It is a pain only when it is not correctly set up.
This mechanic is way out of line IMO. Speedplay hater probably has never been a user. If Peter Sagan used them at pro tour level, and some mechanic disses then, sorry dude. I wouldnt have commented, but after the Speedplay comment.... wow.

My touring bike has three by and I have zero problems with it.

Someone who' s "loving" Schwalbe Marathons over Conti whatever, hasn't understand the basics of bike riding.
Schwalbe is still in the business for one main reason: their profit margins.
Not bc these are anywhere near decent tires in terms of wet handling, grip and rolling resistance.
As you say, they may last years. Years of bad bike handling on hard rubber. Does anybody really want this?
For every pair of Enve wheels you sell, you would probably sell 10 pairs of Hunt. Of course you will have more problems with them.

Speedplay pedals need to be put out to pasture? Tell me then which other cleat type allows for those of us with significant leg length discrepancies to stack spacers like Speedplay does? And I'm not talking 4-6mm, I'm talking 15mm! Look? No. SPD? No.
Further, no other cleat allows the fore/aft and side to side adjustments that Speedplay offers for people with knee or calf issues.
