Walter Ray has been my bowling hero for many years. I am 17 years his senior, but that doesn't mean anything. I bowled and pitched horseshoes, but never at his level. I never had the time or money to bowl until after I retired from factory working. Yet I still did get to roll two 300s, and two 299s sanctioned scores, after I was 62 years old. I am now crippled with arthritis, and unable to do anything at all, but still root for the GOAT. Stay safe Walter.

The '90s and 2000s if he was on the TV show, chances were he was going to win that title. It got to the point where I was tired of seeing him on TV and wanted the other guys to get a chance. That's how good he was. "Deadeye" WRWJ

We are seeing an end of an era. Walter Ray, I loved watching you bowl. Bowling is so much more than just throwing great scores. Like many things in the world. The days of true professionalism in many professional sports has gone to the wayside. I hope the kids that are growing into the sport watch footage of you, Norm Duke, Mark Roth, and other greats that truly made the sport. Like all sports today. The PBA had to make the choice to hot dog the events to get the younger crowd to watch. But, let it be known. Walter Ray Jr. You will always be one of the PBA greats. A true class act.

Like I said about Pete, you guys were and are so GREAT that in 40 years the next generation had to start Bowling with 2 hands to compete and beat your 1! And even then it took what? Over a decade to finally get you guys to call it and you guys are almost in your 60s! And I seen you throw a 2 handed 300! WHAT! Lmao! It sucks you guys are calling it and it hurts me, I get it! But if you look at it from the way I'm saying it YOU GUYS ARE THE O.G. PROS OF THE PROS and there is nothing you guys left behind! You BROUGHT THE BEST! AND IN THE END THEY NEEDED BOTH HANDS TO CONTEST! SO YOU PETE & NORM ARE NOTHING LESS THEN THE BEST!
THANK YOU ALL AND GOD BLESS!

Had the great & awesome opportunity to attend a one-night clinic at the small bowling alley that was my home house in southeastern Pa. several years back with Walter Ray. The owner was able to get him to stop by for a few hours on his way to a tournament on Long Island, NY to do this. By the time he was leaving to continue his trip, he was looking at not getting to his hotel until well past midnight, maybe even one or two AM. It really made an impression on me, that a guy who absolutely is in the list of greatest bowlers of all time, arguably THE best of all time, would do this for a group of less than ten people. He absolutely was a class guy without question. Oh, and my average has gone up about 20 pins too; finally learned the correct way to shoot spares!

When I was starting bowling (late 90s), I was one of the bowlers with the least amount of hook among my peers, and even though I can keep up and even beat most of them, I always lag behind the really good ones and that I can only best them if the lanes are dry. And so I wondered if I will ever be good when I don't hook the ball that well.
Walter Ray Williams, Jr. was the inspiration I needed. He showed that at the highest level, he can compete with people with a lot more revs and a lot bigger hook with accuracy and grit. Not just compete, but actually beat them and become one of the best. To this day, I'm still amazed how much power his strikes are when it hits the pins with how little hook his ball has.

I could feel the intimidation his opponents would feel when facing him. He was like the Terminator out on the lanes. Ice cold veins, would take advantage of any opponent’s mistake and pounce on it. I’m my opinion, the true GOAT amount the conventional 1 handed bowlers.

I have to say that Pete and WRW were somewhat forced to retire by the technological advancements of the balls. Younger guys are naturally able to throw it harder down the lanes but they don’t necessarily have good skillful releases. Bowling used to be an art form where consistent skillful releases ruled the lanes. Nowadays it’s more about how hard one throws it down because 90% of that power comes from the balls themselves. With a few exceptions of course.

I don’t even consider it bowling anymore. At least use 2 fingers and no thumb. These guys aren’t even using any finger holes.
