    We retired to Ireland in 2013. It is a wonderful country with open-hearted people and we are truly blessed to be living a rich and varied retirement. I would recommend it, especially the South-West. We settled in a village near Kenmare in County Kerry where the landscape is out of this world and the locals are friendly and welcoming.

    Skip to 13:00 if you're a non-EU or EAA retiree. Much of the information prior to that point does not apply to retirees as they are not allowed to work in Ireland. No changes to financial regs as of 9/19. You'll also be required to spend €300 for your permission to remain passport stamp each year. INIS is inefficient in processing applications and renewals, and may not be contacted by phone. That said, it's a great place to live!

    It doesn't make sense referring to Roman times when talking of History in Ireland, because Romans didn't live in Ireland. There was Romans in what is today's England, Wales and some part Scotland but at the most the contact that Romans had with Irish were raids and commercial.

    "Edited by Samy on Oct. 07, 2021
    Hi, my name is Samy and I am a long-time partner of RoninBlue. It is with great sadness that I announce RoninBlue’s sudden passing of a heart attack on Monday, August 16, 2021.
    RoninBlue was passionate about personal finance and early retirement and loved sharing his knowledge with all of you on RUclips. We were also so excited about restarting our travels to places around the world to find our retirement destination after the borders get reopened. Before that could happen, however, he was taken away so suddenly and unexpectedly. Although I miss him dearly, I take comfort in the fact that he thoroughly enjoyed his life. His passion and beautiful spirit will continue to live on in all of us he has left behind.
    RoninBlue has put a lot of love and energy into making these videos and I would like to thank each and every one of you for sharing in his joy and for supporting his channel up to now. I wish you all the best.
    Love, Samy"

      We moved here last year from SoCal with the intention of eventually retiring here. We bought property first, then I lucked out finding an OK job as a dual US-EU citizen. Life in general here is much more pleasant, peaceful, and slower than in LA. The cost of living is pretty high, but still not as high as in LA for the most part. However the salaries are pretty much half the LA salaries in certain sectors. While a bit limited, the produce here is of good quality, and you can find many items at some of the ethnic grocery stores in Dublin city center.
      Regarding healthcare, I've experienced much better healthcare systems in mainland Europe. The costs are far less than in the US, but specialist appointments can take forever.
      For social life, apps and online Meetups are a lifesaver. It's much easier to make friends when you're really young, however if you're in midlife it can be challenging. I've been told countless times that I won't make any Irish friends as they'd rather not mix with us foreigners. Don't get me wrong, they're generally really nice and friendly, but thankfully there are plenty of other foreigners, immigrants, and expats to meet, who are in similar situations.
      It takes a long time to get a driving license, but it's worth it to be able to go on day trips to see the beautiful countryside. The best ways to get around without a car is the train, tram (Luas), and bus respectively.
      Those are my thoughts after living here for a year and a half. :)

      I guess they had very good reasons to leave. Ireland was not always the rather happy place it has recently become. For centuries, from Queen Elizabeth I onward, English misrule kept the country back and involved a lot of discrimination in favour of a small settler community. They through indifference and cynicism exacerbated the impact of a famine that lead to many people dying and emigrating which more than halved the population in the mid 19th century. After independence, just one hundred years ago, it took time for the country to develop, shake off the shackles of economic dependency on England and people continued leaving for better lives until just over 20 years ago. Recently due to openness to foreign investment and membership of the EU it has blossomed and overtaken its former colonial master and now is attracting people because of high salaries and is a great place mainly because of the people who despite their history are warm and open. If through your ancestry you are eligible for Irish nationality, go for it and escape from the awful divisiveness of US politics today. There are many great things about the US ( including innovation, opportunities if you have talents and ambition, great shopping for many consumer goods; even those that are imported are often cheaper than in the country of origin. But there are also some great turn-offs. You refer to shit and this may include awful media, long commutes, expensive if not unaffordable healthcare, racism, bland food with much of it laced with sugar and chemicals, use of firearms by nutcases in schools and workplaces. Some of this, but happily not all of it, is creeping into Ireland and other western countries. But in short, if you can do move to Ireland for a better quality of life.

    I think you should be more clear about the health services. It is not free unless you have a really low income (less than €10k per year) and the free service has really long waiting lists for everything.
    If you're working paying tax and social insurance (PRSI) you still have to pay for health services. Really, you should have private health insurance as well as the State system. If you live in a rural area you will need a car. Running a car in Ireland is the most expensive item after property. If you live in a rural area getting anything done can take for ever. Even getting something like a puncture repair can take half a day.

    • @patrickmccutcheon9361
      @patrickmccutcheon9361 2 года назад +2

      This is very true. It need to be a deal breaker but you need to be aware of the relative high cost as doctors’ fees are high and even private insurance does not cover everything unless you do for an expensive insurance plan. Insurance works on an excess system such that even if you have private insurance it does not cover you for the first x consultations. It also does not cover everything in terms of corrective eyewear, dental treatment and childbirth. It does not avoid long waiting times for some consultations let alone elective or non-emergency surgery. My elderly mother lived there and died recently. She had been waiting for a specialist appointment, fixed in May and scheduled for December, albeit for something different than what caused her death.

    In Ireland, I can safely say that Waterford City was always a nice place to live, but it really has come on leaps and bounds in the last number of years, it is slowly growing just nicely , both in size and in terms of population, not at all too big but not too small, there appear to be more jobs, it has a beautiful greenway, beautiful surroundings, is a short drive from Tramore, Dunmore etc and near the beautiful Comeragh mountains. The video claims that Cork is the second largest city in Ireland yet the population of Belfast is about 3 times that of Cork's. If the video is about the republic of Ireland only, that needs to be specified in the beginning. But since Belfast's #1 tourist attraction is included as one of the main attractions in Ireland, I think its population has to be included in that as well. Ireland is first an island and secondarily an island with 2 distinct governments.

    Thanks for advising people not to make stereotypical jokes about the Irish drinking alcohol. We aren't usually insulted by such jokes but they can be very tiresome ... particularly if the Irish person you're talking to doesn't drink.
    Thanks also for pointing out that the shamrock has three leaves. However, the shamrock is _not_ a lucky symbol (clover is the lucky one); it's a religious symbol and is also one of the symbols of State (the Irish harp is the other one). According to tradition, when the Roman guy, Saint Patrick, arrived in the Fifth Century to convert the Irish to Christianity he used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (i.e. three persons in one God).
    Just a few other points.
    There were no 'Roman times' in Ireland because there were no Romans here ... apart from Saint Patrick. Irish culture is much older than the Romans. For example, the Neolithic passage grave at Newgrange, County Meath was constructed around 3,200 BC which makes it older than Stonehenge in England or the pyramids in Egypt.
    Belief in leprechauns is not commonplace and Irish people don't normally mention them. In the past, in rural areas, there _was_ a belief in the faeries and also in faerie forts and faerie trees.
    Fun fact: In 1999, the M18 motorway in County Clare was finally built after 10 years of delay because there was a faerie tree (a Hawthorn) in the way. The motorway was rerouted to avoid the tree!! I don't know whether Clare County Council believed in faeries or whether they felt that, just sometimes, there are more important things in life than tarmacadamed progress.
    Finally, there's no such place as the 'South of Ireland'. The Irish Republic, which is a full member of the EU, is simply called Ireland (or sometimes abbreviated as 'ROI'). It includes not only the south of the island of Ireland but also the most northerly point (Malin Head in County Donegal). Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, is in the northeast.
    Over all, good vid! Well done you! 😃👍🇮🇪

    • @Charactermatters650
      @Charactermatters650 2 года назад +3

      There is also no such place as Northern Ireland - it is simply the North of Ireland. Rational or not, faerie rings are still common, often out in the middle of a farmers field (the old superstitions are still very much alive - despite those who state otherwise).

But, Ireland's history seems very fascinating, being almost 12000 years old. I guess I used the Romans as a way for the majority to relate to a particular place in time, worldly known. Interesting enough the Romans never conquered Ireland but England was for 400 years by them. Anyway, I could never pretend to show the entire history of Ireland in a 15 min vlog. But, yes, it made me read up more about Irelands history, so I thank you for that!

    Access to the public healthcare is limited to people on low incomes. Most people carry private insurance which covers the big items once you have already, beyond your premiums, also covered the so-called excess or threshold of e.g. the first x visits to your family doctor. Elderly senior citizens get some things free. By US standards prices of healthcare are low. The only thing cheap in the US and comparatively expensive in Ireland and Europe in general is non-prescription medication. But if your frame of reference is European you will find the costs comparable if not higher. It is certainly more expensive than in the UK or Scandinavian countries where healthcare at point of delivery is free although of course you pay for it with your income tax and compulsory social insurance charges.
