It ain't easy, but it is simple. There is a step-by-step process to doing anything within the creative field when you begin trying to find clients.
I've been freelancing for the past 12 years in many fields from, photography, videography, audio engineering, and music performance, and time and time again one thing rings true... it's all the same process.
Today I'm going to break down that process, and trust me when I tell you, it will lead to results. I'm not gonna say what results because everyone's path is different, but this is how you can begin to find success as a voice-over artist.
Thanks, I actually did learn something! The difference between a sample and a demo reel! Now, from what I’ve been told, lots of agents want you to have a website
Glad it helped! I used to be lax about websites but they do make a massive difference. Having a platform that you control the perception and the branding is key. Thanks for sharing that agents feel the same!

Came back just for this list thank you 👏
Sometimes, getting too caught up in the nitty gritty of things, I tend to forget that what we do is indeed a CRAFT. I needed that reminder. Thank you
Absolutely! And you’re not alone in that sentiment. A lot of the times we get so caught up in the business side of voice acting that we forget the acting side of it. That’s one of the reasons why I always make a point to take classes whenever I can and read up on new techniques. if I don’t, I can find myself stuck in a rut
I'm on week two of looking into becoming a VO actor (actress?) and i learned SO MUCH from this video. I hadn't even heard of rosters lmao
Soon as you mentioned your background in audio engineering, I was hooked! I have the same background and this video has been very useful!
Glad you enjoyed it! Being an audio engineer has definitely helped to supercharge my time in the more commercial and industrial side of things as a voice actor.
I’m not even interested in pursuing a career in voice acting, but your video was so fun to watch and informative! So glad I found your channel!
An actionable set of steps to get to where I want to be! You're giving out golden nuggets man lol thank you and I'm excited to get all these samples recorded and uploaded 😄
Glad that I could help and best of luck! If you have any questions let me know! I’m always collecting ideas for new videos.
this just came up on my homepage and now I am seriously considering doing voice acting as a side gig
It's a great gig! I do want to stress that it isn't the easiest thing to get into, you have to do a bunch of legwork and have the skillset, but if you're passionate and collaborative it's a great field.
I've always dreamed of being a VA. I was a theater actor when I was younger, however, I was never really good at the exaggerated body movements required of theater. I was, however, decent at the voicing. I have a decent audio setup already, since I make youtube content as a hobby. Making content as a hobby also means I'm decent at talking and voicing stuff by myself, and I'm okay at improv since I come up with commentary on the spot in my videos. I'm also decently used to voiceovers and audio editing/technical equipment, since that is part of my hobby.
This is very good information. You start from the very beginning and build up into an actual career to show people how to get paid- you did an excellent job with this one. Shows us you know your stuff.
THANK YOU!! Thank You so much for this. I'm just starting out but this little bit of guidance helped to focus me as I record my demo reels. You're awesome! I'll be checking our your stuff as I move forward!
ive been a theater actor for 8 years, going to tv and film acting school. im gonna finish in 2 weeks and want to start doing majority voice acting work but i didnt know where to start, this is a really helpful video!
Thank you for this . Correct information. Ive waited 30 years to attempt this after years of suggestion. Anyway, im glad ive learned what i have from you and others. Cant wait to have my 1st voice class.
Not sure if you are still making videos but I love how you explain things. Could you by chance make a video going into depth about demo reels. I know you have a diy one but I guess I'm referring more to 1.) in order to open up job prospects should we prepare different reels for different types of jobs ex. One for audiobook work, one for animation, one for commercial etc?
2.) the order of thing?! Demo reel > post on sites/audition > agent or do you need an agent first? 😅. I appreciate you!
Great video! Learned a lot. Very clear and concise. Thank you very much and may you and yours stay healthy and happy!
Glad to hear it! Thank you for your kind words and same to you and yours as well.
Im grateful for your content. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for this Javaughn. Your insight is great.
Glad it was helpful!
You definitely got a new subscriber.
This information help me understand what my next steps should be, and I plan to look back on this video if I ever get stuck. 🙏🏾
Thank you. Very informative, as most do not really include valuable information about the business end of this particular undertaking. You sir are direct, to the point and highly educational
hey I've been working on becoming a voice actor trying to learn what i can and i just want to say thanks for making this video what you were explaining is exactly what I've been learning so its nice to actually have some confirmation that I'm on the right track
Thank you so much for the information you shared with us

You are articulate , organized and insightful. Very helpful video. Thank you.
Why would he not be articulate
probably this is the first affective video in my voice over journey
Thanks a lot! I've been doing voiceovering for a few years so far but I've realised I'm not getting enough gigs, didn't know why. Now I have the answers. Thanks a lot!
Thanks. I have learned valuable information from you. I didn't know the difference between a sample and a demo reel. I also appreciate the way you broke the steps down. You have given me the confidence to step out on faith and start voice acting.😊
Great to hear! There are always new things to learn and practice, keep your chin up, keep walking forward and before you know it, you'll be where you're looking for!
Been waiting to be a voice actor and this is really helpful
Loving your channel! Thanks for the great tips!
You are so welcome!
Great video, thank you for the info!
Great advice! Loved your sharing the difference between a "sample" and a "demo reel." Updating my demos now and that was a game changer, Javaughn!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very helpful
As an aspiring VA, thank you for this!
Excellent footage for beginners who are breaking into the industry. Thank you.
It's better to use only Backstage and audition daily. Quality over Quantity. You will not be able to keep up with being on a bunch of websites.
Depends on your schedule and workflow. My full time income is spread evenly over multiple websites. If one shuts down for any reason I have additional sources of income where I can audition and receive opportunities. After a while you’ll start to see what works and what doesn’t and shift away from certain sites. When you’re getting started I’d always suggest casting a wider net to test what works and what doesn’t then refine from their, but there are many paths to success in this industry.
Thank you for this video. It is very informative and definitely something I can add to my arsenal of information. I am excited to implement these useful tools. God bless.
You are so welcome! Always glad to be able to help.
So when you are talking about building samples are we talking about just recording anything with range. I'm kinda stuck on what to make a sample.
You hit it in the nail for me Bra
Thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I’m a newbie beginning my journey into voice acting and I got a lot out of it.
I’m always confused on how you go from doing commercials and mini gigs to professional stuff like how do the professionals see you I feel they already have ties so I’m very happy you covered everything really helps thx
Thank you sir! This has super helpful I am definitely going to revisit the video! The journey starts now!
Lots of extremely good information, my one question is, do you suggest starting an LLC before you start? Would that make you 1.) look more professional? 2.) Will that help write off expenses for your business such as recording equipment?
Or do you suggest just starting out before you do that to see if its even worth it? Thanks in advance!
THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO I LIKE TH E WAY YOUR EXPLAINED IT
Thank you for this video, I've not started the whole process yet, but to hear it lined out like this is very helpful...
This is extremely informative! Thank you
You’re a GEM!
Ok, I'm in Sampletown. I'll be making samples...just me and the mic.
Heck yeah! It’s a great place to be 🙌🏾. It may take some time but those samples are the building blocks to EVERYTHING.
@@Javaughnhenry_i have a question, do u need to study before this or you can be a self studied voice actor?
Thanks!
Anytime!
I must have been lucky to get on the big screen I never had any of these I worked as a medical dr. in a war movie for 3 months got paid well but I never had an agent for acting or modeling they came from California to Canada just to cut my hair in a show. In the movoe Paul Gross was my boss great guy loved the way he worked he wrote directed and starred in the movie very talented man he is. I was never told noby anyof them. It is harder for me to get a job in a office or fast food place then acting. I had many rejections applying at office or fast food places never have i in the movie modeling industry but I really have not aplied to that many places I am 4 for 4 in the movie and modeling industrybut I know my day will come soon where I will hide my head like an ostrick and bury my head in the sand. Like I said I must have been lucky to be actepted 100 percent of the time.
Great video, very informative.
Very helpful! Thanks!
is talking to myself in many different tones experience
Thanks bro this was very informative. 🙏🏽
I'm early stages. I've had 2 gigs on fiverr. Both got great reviews. Just need to add my samples to more websites. Definitely want to continue on this journey cause it's so much fun. And to get paid for it?? Amazing!
You have gained a subscriber ❤ looking forward to learn more
Man much appreciated this helps alot even though i just got into the industry😁😁
Thank you ...u explained very well....
Great video!
I want to do this, I spend a lot of time a conversations and have been inspired by others performances. I don’t care to be the best in the world i want a career where I can live comfortably not ✨lavishly✨ just comfortable and if it goes beyond that I won’t say no.
Super helpful thank you.
Do you have a video on your recording equipment? I’ll check out your page as well. Love your videos. Already subscribed!!
I don't, but that's not a bad idea to make! My studio has evolved over the years, so I'll add that to a video list, thanks!
Suggestion on what to record samples reel on? and what equipment can be used to start?
thank you! i needed this so bad
Great video, thank you ❤
thank you!
Starting out which is the best recording software should I use?
Hello..ive been told many times I should look into this profession...I usually just give thanks and blow it off..now im intrigued..thanks bud!
Btw us sharing a name and you being the 1st video to pop up could be a sign?😆🙏🏿👍🏿
Hey, I'm stuck at a phase that seems to trip up a lot of people: finding a good spot to record in my apartment. My tiny closet, even with clothes hanging, has too much echo. Now I'm trying to figure out if I can just record in my bedroom, if I need to invest in one of those small recording booths you put your head into, or if I should get something to go over the mic. I'm really unsure what to do since some of these options are pretty expensive. Thoughts?
I would try fiddling with whatever recording software you're using personally! Sometimes when I record in OBS Studio, I have to tweak my mic settings in the software to get those echos and such brought down. Having a room with soundproof padding might also help a lot but that costs money of course haha. I know I didn't make the video but hope this helps!
❤😂good tips thank you
What type of equipment should I use/invest in? I love voiceover am a natural beginner my voice is amazing 🎤🤲🏼💜💙💚✨🙌🏼💸🤗💸💸💸💸💰💰
Do you recomend to read chapters from classic books from the domain?
How long it can take until getting an offer?
You've got a great voice for quirky cartoon characters.
what editing software do you use?
I use ProTools. It's expensive, overkill for VO work, and unfortunately it's a subscription now haha. I used to record/mix bands and it's great for multiple tracks and large ensembles. For just VO work there are plenty of cheap if not free alternatives you can use.
What is gear that will impress or satisfy potential customers but won’t break the bank?
Hey im just a beginner but im afraid that if i can make it or not
I checked a lot of vids on how and where to start with, but without any training or classes, i wanna know how i can learn the character voices etc.. and get some project
Great content dude you are amazing!! Do you mentor? Or offer a course?? Just retired and very much want to pursue this career
Hello, I know I'm late to this, but what equipment do you recommend for an absolute amateur like me who's really interested in this sort of work. Who lives in the UK? Any tips are appreciated!
Wait can 14 year olds still do voice acting or is that more for older people.
I'm curious about that too, also in the UK, I'm not sure if there are many resources for me to use
I'm most likely gonna just wait until I'm a bit older
@@abyssal_dreamssame
Don’t wait! Start from now! I know people who started in their teens who are now big names. Besides, you always have more time to improve later on!
@@abyssal_dreamsnah mate, age is not a problem, get into it early and quick if u wish..
The younger the better dude @@abyssal_dreams
I want to understand but i am not able to😢
For character voice acting where does one get I suppose "inspiration" for voices for demo reels?
what is a sample
Hey Jamal
I just want somebody out there (any Fn one) to tell me what the hell a voice actor actually does??? If I come across as frustrated its because I AM!!!! I googled " what does a voice actor do?" and all I got was a million video's and articles's telling me how to get into voice acting and or make money on voice acting or voice overs - or bla bla bla.....NOT one damn thing popped up to answer my questions WHAT DOES A VOICE ACTOR ACTUALLY DO?? CAN ANYONE ANSWER THAT FOR ME?
Voice actors are actors who record a script for commercials, animation movies, video games, and audiobooks instead of acting in front of a camera. It seems like they're slowly being replaced by the film actors, though.
@@matxalenc8410 Thank you for the answer...However I am still a little unclear...for example- I juts got done watching a movie a couple days ago ...in the ending credits, it gave the names of approx.20 voice actors....so this is where I get really confused....are you saying that the actors in the movie- its not really their voice? That somehow the voice actors voices replace that of the movie actors voice? I just don't understand how they could do that....I mean I know its technically possible but? The male actor in this movie I watched was also a singer in a " boy band" so maybe I could see those actors ( the rest of the guys the boy band) maybe their voices were replaced when they were singing?
@@tefenstratok. The first guy's reply was a little confused.
There are two different types of professions, but they do overlap, and many people do both.
One is a "voiceover" artist, and the other is a "voice actor". They are similar, but different. In both, we only hear the person's voice, but never see the person. (Occasionally, there are times when a person on camera is also doing a voiceover at the same time, to describe what is happening or to help narrate the story.)
A voiceover is usually just a narration where acting isn't involved, (though sometimes it is), like a nature documentary, or a simple TV ad like the many drug commercials we see. We hear the voice, but never see who is talking. Also, they don't need real acting skills where conveying different emotions is important. They only need to read the script clearly.
A voice ACTOR is like any other actor who performs on screen, but their voice is recorded to play in sync with an animated character, such as cartoons and video games. This is where acting talent is important. They have to convey emotion into what they are saying just as a live action actor would. Also, foreign language films are sometimes dubbed in English. This is when an English speaking voice actor will put their voice over the foreign language actor's lines.
Also, voice actors do audio books and plays, usually fiction where emotions are necessary. Non-fiction books usually DON'T require emotion, so a voiceover specialist can handle those without much acting skill.
I wish I could leave voice comments.
