You are right, TwinSticks. It is a very sad time for anyone of us who admired and drove the old-style iron. I just hope they'll have a few of those for us to drive around up in heaven as a special gift for old truckers.
Mark, we watch your channel because you share your honest opinions with the viewers. There is no need to avoid subjects or candy coat the discussion. The demise of the 389 is sad. There are many things that are exiting culture that should not leave production such as hemi dodge products.
I agree with adding the tilt steering on LBL. I’d think a white frame and drivetrain would be extremely hard to keep looking good with oil leaks, grease slinging off the u-joints and road grime.
Personally I don't understand all the complaints on your criticism. It's your channel, your videos and your opinion. You don't like autos and don't like DEF. That's perfectly fine, due to it's your opinion. An opinion you're allowed to have. You may have different opinions on stuff than I do, but that's perfectly fine we're both allowed to have opinions. I'll respect your opinion too. It's not like we're talking about horrible stuff in the world.
Howdy Mark The Rubber Duck from Lima,Ohio Checking in. Another great Video. As far as Automatics go The Mack M Drive is one of the Best Automatics out there and teamed up with a 505Hp Mack MP8 they are actually awesome. I prefer my 13spd but as long as it helps make me money I'm game even after 18yrs and 2 Million miles out here on the road. Also it's up to us old school drivers to help and pass along the old ways to these new drivers coming up instead of making fun of them and saying they're not drivers. They can't help that these driving schools and mega carriers don't offer manual training. Just my take.
That’s an awesome perspective. It gets old hearing how terrible the new drivers are and how amazing the old drivers are. Neither one is absolute. Im sure Truckers from the 70s were laughed at by the truckers of the 50s
A lot of cities are using CNG for buses, garbage trucks, stuff like that so they've got their own filling stations, I could see those CNG trucks making sense in a municipal fleet. The first two kinda look like the right color for city trucks too,.
Well done Contrac for the charity work! The last CNG that I think sold for 20k would make a good base for a project. A nice clean rolling chassis / driveline...take another body and an old detroit 8v53 or whatever would fit and ...
8:27 A rare moment where a Canadian discovers a close shoulder tire 😂. It's mostly for highway rigs and what alot of us run down in the states ( With the exception of guys who go off-road.).
Mark I would keep on keeping on! I drive an auto shift/plastic truck. You are not hurting our egos lol. I grew up in a truck since 5yrs old riding with my dad, he has 47 years on the road. He drives an automatic as well. A stick between the seats doesn’t make or break a driver, only the super truckers think that. I do feel that if a guy is hell bent on have a gear shift, then you definitely should. We all deserve to have the ability to make our own decisions and do what makes us happy. Just don’t fool yourself into thinking it makes you more qualified. I make more money than 98% of company drivers with manual transmissions. How does that make sense if I’m not a real trucker?
We added tilt steering to our 359 using a donor out of a 96 international with minimal modification........ something interesting to see..... look in this week's truck paper classifieds..... 1982 Pete 359 custom built Pocono race way truck with odd sleeper with a white frame rails!!!
The solid outer shoulder on the tyres is to improve life. It's an all position tyre usually used on trailers and steerers where the shoulders get eaten before the centres. If you're running huge miles and nice roads and don't require the extra traction of a lug tyre you can run an all position.
I can see why you'd want an auto for city driving, in applications like dump trucks, garbage trucks, etc. For highway driving though, the 18 speed is still king imo
I love these "On the Hunt" vids at the auction. Quite a range of trucks out there these days. But I got to wonder how well the trucking industry is doing when there are so many trucks up for auction. A lot of multiple fleet trucks. Or is there just a large turn-over for vehicles? Mark, I'm already missing Snowman and Bandit sitting on my workbench. I may have to build another set for myself!!! LOL Cheers! Earl
I would imagine companies are out for the highest efficiency. If that means buying a whole new fleet every couple years, it might be financially beneficial for them to do so.
Big fleet companies usually faze trucks out at half a million miles ( usually cause that’s when DPF problems start popping up) and also trucking as a whole is being monopolized by three or four different companies who can afford to under cut these smaller companies. It’s sad but before too long there won’t be a whole lot of old iron working on the road in a couple years
Love these On the Hunt posts! This was certainly one of the more educational ones - CNG trucks, outrageous 389x prices, how Mark co-exists with automatics 😂
I agree with on the DEF, every truck I drove with DEF got deleted because the DEF would freeze up in the cold weather, even at the pumps! Also I don’t like the computer gauges on the dash because you always need to flip through the screens to read your gauges and that a distraction while your driving. The old school gauges are way better because at a glance you can see what your truck is doing!
Auto's are great for those cold cold mornings when the battery's just don't have quite enough and you don't feel like working anyway, or any other time your starter craps while on the job. White frame may look neat, but have fun keeping it white. Tough enough keeping a fresh black frame looking good on a damp day.
Oh wow!! Very cool things to have show up! Got some learning in! Neat to see you fascinated... I drive automatics. I have no choice with this employer. Doesn't mean I have to like them. It's a truck, it's work. There is always "Someday" right?! Nice sale for charity !
I like it when you give your honest opinion about trucks, including critical comments about aero trucks and autos, lol. I much prefer manuals, and wouldn't buy an aero truck, flat tops with manual is the easy to go. I can see the allure of an automated transmission if someone has a physical situation where they can't use a clutch or easily shift though. Comfort for those living in trucks is important, I remember driving long haul, but the fancy condo trucks with autos were never as fun as driving the Pete 379 I drove in my earlier years. I was much more inclined to keep the outside shiny on that rig, lol, beautiful truck. Keep up the great videos!
Hey Mark saw you talking about that 389 Pete about that digital screen I drive a 2024 389 with the same kind of screen basically the same kind of truck that screen dims and brightens according to the light outside if it's bright outside the screen will dim if it's dim outside or cloudy the screen will brighten up pretty cool actually this thought you might like to know. Also when you put in reverse the radio mutes and the screen dims completely
It’s your channel so you talk about and criticize whatever you want those who chastise or belittle you on your channel doing what you like can leave don’t cater to those who don’t run your channel because at the end of the day it’s your platform and you have the right to run it however say whatever you want.
I will say this, the automatics are GREAT for dump trucks or off road trucks, much easier to get out of muddy situations.. but road tractors I agree with you on
Couldn't agree more about DEF. I've seen deleted X-15's and they barely roll any coal. I think engines have gotten a lot better with 'emissions' compared to 25 years ago. The government can talk to me about emissions when the entire country of India isn't using their rivers as the local dump. As well: with Peterbilt moving away from the 389, I'm basically uninterested in everything they make now. Hopefully the W9 stays around a while.
Well mark you where not far off the price of that new Pete what it sold for good call . Thanks again for showing us around the truck yard . Those natural gas trucks are interesting didn’t know they even existed hum !!
Mornin Mark, took me a couple of days to watch this video. Spring time night shift out here in the bush country, very little sleep and lots of hours. I still love these on the hunt video's, and really Mark I wouldn't worry to much about trashing automatic transmissions, the same people that get upset about what you say about auto trans, should think about the things they trash in this industry. Everyone has different likes and dislikes, hell if we didn't we would all be married to the same woman. You just keep voicing your opinion, if people don't like it there is therapy lessons going on somewhere all day. Really interesting to see the natural gas vehicles in the sale and like you I'm wondering why they are there, if it's because they are good or no good, I guess we will find out sometime soon. Have a great week my friend say hello to Mrs. Twin stix for us.
Great video as always brother! I would imagine you'll start seeing a lot of CNG trucks coming to auctions. CNG is not available most places so it requires the businesses to have it onsite for daily filling. Also, the maintenance costs are exceptionally higher than regular diesel engines. The technology and reliability just isn't there yet for it to be sustainable for mass use.
Greetings from Yorkshire in the UK Mark. Your appreciation and enthusiasm for the old trucks are good to see, and your efforts to preserve those that you own are admirable, but I must admit that I am happier in my new quiet, comfortable, very powerful V8 Scania automatic than I was in my old manual truck, but the modern technology such as collision avoidance, lane departure warning, cruise control and onboard vehicle weighing systems will soon be seen as the norm just as power steering and ABS braking have become and make the job much easier and less tiring than it used to be on an ageing trucker.
Yeah I used to love going to car auctions here in the uk, the smell of exhaust fumes and pie chips and peas with lots of salt and vinegar on em . Happier times.
Drove a gasoline bus converted to l/p. Similar to this. It had limited range but seemed to pull much better than the buses that were gasoline powered. Hate to take it cross country for sure. BTW Love your content!
I don’t see my comment from earlier, so if it’s not there if you’re looking for a custom grill for your truck, I would say check out SH tube out of Kentucky. They can pretty much put whatever you want in it and they can make you other stainless steel parts as well And don’t worry about being criticized for your opinion. It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. It shouldn’t matter if it upsets others.
Ok that's a deal Mark I'm 77 now, so I'll just wait for your video on the X-rebuild😁 On the L/G trucks don't know what your rates are in Canada, but here in eastern Oregon, there out of sight, might be the reason company's are dumping them. Ok thanks for the video, waiting for the x-video..........and waiting........and😉 I was there when old Noah built the Ark, and I crawled through the window after dark.............🙃
Hi mark when you were talking about the 379x while sitting in the 389 I think you were trying to say the legacy edition 379 that was 1000 models in ‘07
Yes it’s a little confusing as the legacy 379s were numbers from 1-1000 but the 379x’s were not and there was approx 2000 of them made. You are correct though as the Legacy trucks were the final 379s built in 2007 👍
Slotted Grill.. kinda sounds like my first teenage girlfriend although back then we just called them braces. Oh you youngsters missed the late 70’s and all of the 80’s. Great Music. MTV started on our neighborhood Cablevison in 1981 waaay down here in Mississippi. It may be a surprise but we had street lights And sidewalks. In M.S.
Those tires are called closed shoulder tires. Those style of drives get much better wear on the highway vs open/full grove tires. Open shoulders tend to cup out really bad.
Thanks for the video mark. PS, the only people getting butt hurt about making fun of an automatic are those that can’t split an 18 speed without jerking the cab off the truck…😂😂 Don’t even get me started on DEF, DPF, EGR coolers, etc…🤬🤬
If natural gas power is the future then I'm here for it. At least they have a sound and (probably) don't take half a day to charge. I'd prefer this over an electric vehicle any day.
Surely the CNG trucks are intended to be used for municipal purposes, like garbage collection. So the city or state would have CNG bowsers at the depot.
Agee 100%! -You want to fall asleep on the hyway, buy yourself an automatic, that goes for you your daily family car as well. The more gears I hear and the more sticks I have to move, that will keep me awake the "livelier" I stay.
Keep at it Mark! Autos suck! We just got a new Mack dump truck at work for an off road site truck. I opened the door to check it out and saw its an Allison! That is almost sacrilegious in a Mack!
try it , once you get used to it you might like it ! i'll never have another one with a clutch pedal (i stand by my opinion that that's the only difference, well that and the fact that i can choose if i want to shift or not) .... it's sorta like e logs, i swore when they first came out i'd never touch one , but after using it for a while i hate when my tablet malfunctions and i have to go back to paper
Automatic transmissions are in modern (European) trucks to save in fuel and thus running costs, not because drivers were not able or willing to shift manually.
those are what is called a CLOSED SHOULDER DRIVE TIRE. been around forever. they get the traction from the inside and they don't wear goofy on the sides,
Grill idea you are talking about and the longer shifter weighed correctly to not mess up your trans on gears and shift bushing, get in touch with SHTube in Corbin Ky. They do a lot of that custom stuff and work with a lot of people here in the states. They started a RUclips channel not too long ago. But they have vast knowledge on the old trucks and make whatever you can dream.
Have you heard about Edison Motors. They are up in Canada as well. They like Twin sticks as well on their older trucks, and I don't blame them. But anyways they have made a diesel electric truck, and I think it would be cool if you went by and talked with them. I'm sure they would like to see Snowman!

It’s really not that sad, you’ll be alright.
No, it’s very sad

Thanks for the video Mark, much needed entertainment while being in the hospital with sepsis and getting cancer removed. Keep On Truckin’.
Get well soon
I agree with adding the tilt steering on LBL. I’d think a white frame and drivetrain would be extremely hard to keep looking good with oil leaks, grease slinging off the u-joints and road grime.

White Fenders on LBL Mark as an homage to the original hood

My 93 pete 377 has the same cupholder as that 567 cool to see the same designs in such a fancy new rig.
I believe the guys at semi casual do the custom grills as you mentioned but dont hold me to it, Thanks for another great video Mark!
Those tires on the 389 Peterbilt are that way for fuel mileage. I have those on my 379X and they are awesome.

Always look forward to Thursday mornings
Great episode Mark ! Love tagging along to the auctions with you but this one was extra special.
I totally agree with YOU Especially in the winter
8:27 A rare moment where a Canadian discovers a close shoulder tire 😂. It's mostly for highway rigs and what alot of us run down in the states ( With the exception of guys who go off-road.).

Good afternoon Mark. Great videos as always.
Long time subscriber , love the auction series you do. That's a awesome truck. CNG is less HP but cleaner.
The long nose Pete’s are still alive Mark.. 589 are the newer replacements for the 389s. They even have the large air filters.
Nah … those can’t be called “replacements” but more of well, here’s what’s left 😐
@@TwinStix yea I agree I guess. I do still love the 389s

If natural gas power is the future then I'm here for it. At least they have a sound and (probably) don't take half a day to charge. I'd prefer this over an electric vehicle any day.
had to laugh when you scoffed at the w9 with 2 million miles... like all your trucks don't have at least that 😂😂
Haha true 😂
Surely the CNG trucks are intended to be used for municipal purposes, like garbage collection. So the city or state would have CNG bowsers at the depot.
Agee 100%! -You want to fall asleep on the hyway, buy yourself an automatic, that goes for you your daily family car as well. The more gears I hear and the more sticks I have to move, that will keep me awake the "livelier" I stay.
CNG, automatic. “What in the hell is the world coming to “ ⭐️🤠
I've driven a manual through London England in stop start traffic by the end of it an auto was looking like a good idea for that situation
I like the 589. There, I said it.
Oh, you’re the one 😂
@@TwinStixyes, it's me, I'm the problem it's me.
Nothing wrong with auto's. We run six 4 axle dumps pulling pups on road and off road. They work very well, 550,000 + km. Drivers love 'em
Is it really even a Mack anymore, just a volvo with mack badges
Automatic transmissions are in modern (European) trucks to save in fuel and thus running costs, not because drivers were not able or willing to shift manually.
Oerators of CNG truck flets generally have their own filling stations on site.
those are what is called a CLOSED SHOULDER DRIVE TIRE. been around forever. they get the traction from the inside and they don't wear goofy on the sides,
Mark I prefer manuals as well the last couple years I drove my truck was an automatic and I hated it.
Sigh …
Have you heard about Edison Motors. They are up in Canada as well. They like Twin sticks as well on their older trucks, and I don't blame them. But anyways they have made a diesel electric truck, and I think it would be cool if you went by and talked with them. I'm sure they would like to see Snowman!
Yeah Chase and the team are mint👌and they built a wicked Hybrid. Hopefully they can bring that truck to the Lesco show in Sept 🤔
@@TwinStix
Cool, cool!! That would be awesome!
BTW, twin sticks are the only way to go.
I drove them for years.
Real men Drive real trucks. 🤠
Last of the 379 were the legacy they were all numbered
Yes you are correct 1-1000 in 2007 and those were the last of the 379s. I was mistaken when I said the last were the X’s
Hey twine sticks I work. A flat top truck to this day
U need to check out those guys in Kentucky. S H tube. They do any custom stainless work. Make u a grill like u was talking about for lbl.
I'm with you automatics & ABS brakes are for cars. & DEF has no place anywhere.
I drive both auto and manual.. Everything has a purpose but it what it is.
I've always wanted a 1994 Peterbilt 379
You need to watch Semi Casual they have customized several 389x.
So sad trucking is going to shit mark thanks for keeping it real brother.
UPS has those cng rigs in the states. See them all the time down here.
Contact SH tube for your grille insert with twinsticks logo made into it 👍🏻🙌🏼👊🏼 they make great stuff 👍🏻🙌🏼🔧🔧🔧
Thanks for laying off the automatic transmission. I am a fan of them. Take care Mark.
