The rubber tandem suspension is Hendrickson-Norde. Decent articulation but a very harsh ride when lightly laden. Advantages are low maintenance when compared to springs, lower cost than airbags, and overall durability. Disadvantage is barely being able to climb down from the cab after a bobtail run due to crippling back pain 😆 Great work, Mark, I really like being introduced to all these Canadian trucks 🙂
The old Fords are still some of my favorite trucks. So rare to see clean and unbroken fiberglass on them like that one had. I would have been hard pressed to not take that one home with me. Awesome video as always, thanks Mark ✌
Thanks Mark. Being a young boy in the 70s and 80s here in the UK we loved seeing the trucks on the TV and movies. We're a long way away, however they look awesome over here too. Thanks for all the hard work, love the channel!!
Shore power is an option when buying trucks. The new inverters work both ways, 12v to 120v out and then plug in and you have 120v plus it charges your batteries. Ideally if you carried a generator you could keep your costs down when waiting for a reload. Also the air gauge on the back of the bunk was probably for him to check his weight. The bigger they are the more accurate read you can get to check weights
Hey Mark. Mercedes-Benz (now Daimler Truck) bought Detroit Diesel, Freightliner & Western Star years ago. I live in Michigan, and work for a Canadian company and we are developing a new axle technology for Daimler trucks. I don't want to say to much more in public till the system launches but I can tell you that Daimler highly values the Detroit Diesel brand name and still rocks the old school brand symbol on a lot of their parts. Also the main R&D facility is still in Redford Michigan
Goodness Mark, the negativity in the comments is astounding. I just wanted to say keep up the good work, I appreciate and look forward to every episode whether it's truck shows, on the hunt, or working on trucks. The LBL restoration is what brought me in years ago (been here since episode three!) but the variety keeps me coming back. Restoring a K100 Aerodyne is on my bucket list after I finish this panoply of other projects, and I love the tips and tricks I catch watching, or listening to (when I can't watch, nightshift daycab driver with just enough time to sleep but 600 miles a night to listen), your videos. I meant to comment a while back, but when you were measuring the corrugated sides of the trailer for the wrap, I would take a roll of painters tape and tape all the way down the panel, in and out of every dip, mark the top and bottom, pull the tape and lay it on the floor and measure the marks, I think it would be the most accurate way to get the measurement you need! Thanks Mark, keep on truckin!
The blue Pete with the lights on the stacks ,was used as a Christmas decoration on The front lawn of Terra Nova out in Sherwood park , on Liberty Road ....looked pretty cool
He fingers everything. I bet when TS was a kid and his mom took him to a store, he picked up everything that wasn't tied down and touched everything that was😀
That WS with Cummins, it’s my understanding the big cams run around 40psi oil presure where small cams are around 60. My big can 400 never went above 45
"Hey Peg, can u hide this in your shop so Mrs. Twinsticks doesn't know about this?" Mrs. TwinSticks: "You gotta be kidding me... Ol' good lord he doesn't listen.."
Another great video and thanks for taking us along with you to the auction . I liked the old Ford truck and really it was in pretty good shape . I will see you later in another video so take care and stay safe out there working on the trucks . 🤗👍❤️💫
the brake controller I used, some 30 years ago, had a pendulum in it the actuated the trailer brakes. The harder the pendulum swung, the harder the brakes were applied. It also had a manual button.
You look at the high idle switch... the 400 Cummins had a place in the return line where you could insert a solenoid valve, that would restrict the return enough to speed the engine to half throttle. I have installed several of these when rigging up a picker, so you could speed the engine up from a switch in the crows-nest.
My favorite truck was the 359 , easy-to blind side , most had a 1693 cat , 15 speed or some sort of 2 stick , i liked the 15 best , The trucks road good , and run good , only thing it didn’t have was cruse .
Others have already commented on the Daimler Trucks North America connection between MB and Detroit Diesel, but when Detroit Diesel started development of the HDEP platform it was a bit of a group effort between Michigan and Germany. There's a lot of Mercedes DNA in the DD13, DD15, DD16 such as the engine gear train being in the rear where it would make sense in a european cabover...
For electric trailer brakes... you simply tie into the brake light wire for power control. Just buy a brake controller and follow the instructions. That’s what I did on my Kenworth to pull my camper
The long ramps in the back are to pull a Raised Goose Neck trailer. The detachable front is made to slide up the ramps because the decks don't have jacks since they lay on the ground or blocking to load heavy equipment onto front with the deck removed.
Always love watching your videos man actually my boss and I are also doing a snowman kenworth we found a 74 kenworth with a big cam Cummins pushing 475 Hp 13 speed it’s gonna be one great job and watching u is the best bud thank u Mark
See l told you ! You will need a bigger shop for ALL your projects . Still enjoy your vids . Do you have the time for another Pete with all that work your need doing? You can , of course, build another shop backing onto your present one 🤣🤣🤣 , sure mrs twin sticks wouldn’t notice 😉😉. Thanks for sharing 🇬🇧
Those old brake controllers are just on and off. Wire them off the brake lights. That's why they are adjustable. I got a Redarc TowPro Elite and it's actually has a G force sensor in it and the harder the vehicle brakes, the harder the trailer brakes. It has an intensity selector so you can manually crank it up if you want but setting 3 was always perfect for me. It's a beautiful unit.
Hey Mark! Not sure if someone has already commented this or not… but the splendor interior is the only option for the 38 inch sleepers. You can get the button tuck in the cab but the sleeper only gets the stripes.
I love when you do these. Bit of a reality check. Trucks I thought would go for a lot, went for way less than I expected. Trucks I thought would be dirt cheap went for a lot more than I expected. I was saying out loud, water tank, not fuel. You figured it out.. We wrap the water tanks not just so they don't freeze as fast but also so heat up and expand as much, tank is pressurized. Not all cement trucks need it. Our cement trucks are old school Macs. My favorite is the 2 stick. Mac style, forward Hi Lo and reverse on one, gears on the other... Can shift through them in reverse, I tried, it's terrifying. We REALLY need to figure out why that Cabover is STALKING you!! I mean what's going on with that poor truck...
the volvo from over the top was a custom 1 of 1 truck made by volvo. as far as the price back then they just made it seem like it was more money . the truck is still around to this day it was on ebay a yr ago for 100k i believe. only thing changed were the stacks.
Really good on the hunt video Mark, It would be nice to have the time to drive into Richies and check out trucks but I have to take days off of work to sneak into a truck show. Got more video's to watch Good to be back Mark.
Those MBE4000 engines are a fun rebuild. They have 6 individual cylinder heads, so no over head crane or chain lift needed. The early pre emissions non egr ones are worth keeping around
The hole in the top of that marauder pretty sure they're for exiting in case you go through the ice They got them up north for plowing with blades on them or used to anyways. Guess they use graders mostly now
Didn't expect the western star to be that cheap. Dang that's more in my kind of reach. I think the rust jacking is fixable. Looks like it didn't rot the frame out. And it's only on the back part.
Hey Mark I don't know if you've heard of the old trucking movie called Steel Cowboy made in 1976 with James Brolin but in that movie he had a beautiful White Western Star now if you could ever find one of those you'd be onto something different people never see
Mark, On the trailer brakes they are now using an electronic controller. You just hook it to the battery, ground, brake light switch and the brake signal wire that goes to the electric brakes on the trailer. No more plumbing it into the hydraulic brakes at the master cylinder, Not since anti-lock brakes have they used that method.
John Brzenk won the over the top event. the prize of The "Volvo White Semi Truck" and trailer was valued at $ 250,000 in 1986. iirc he put the truck to work had his friend drive it for years.
52:00 Daimler Trucks bought Freightliner in the early 1980s and Detroit Diesel in 2000, and Daimler is also the company that owns the Mercedes-Benz brand so it makes sense that they would brand that Detroit Diesel as a Mercedes.
They didn't hold up that well for anything but over the road. We had five of them and all five went down due to internal cracking before 300,000 miles. I got out of heavy truck right after and opened my own shop. I do know the company retrofit Detroits in after I left.
Twin sticks, you should have bought it. You should have bought the Peterbelt 379. Flat Top red and white, what does. But the silver pinstripes or whatever it was on it on the hood.
I'm like..Oh Cool Marks new video is out!!!! Get set up to watch it and saying to myself, this seems familiar then it hits me..oh ya, I'm a Patron and watched this earlier this week!!!! Thanks Mark...ya, I watched it again..who doesn't like poking around an auction?
On the suspension these are called "Biscuits" . They ride pretty rough when empty. That one on the left front is collapsed and needs replacing. Probably needs walking beam bushings too.
The way the brake controller works is there’s a pendulum that swings when you step on the brakes of the truck pulling the trailer the further it swings and more brakes that are applied
The Hendrickson walking beam suspension on rubber block mounts was the RS series, a low maintenance, heavy duty suspension. It provided better roll stability than the spring type Hendrickson RT suspension. More and more automatic transmissions in big trucks. This is going the same way as manual transmissions in cars and pickup trucks. They went from nothing but manual, to an option for automatic, to automatic being standard equipment.
All Cummins run below 40psi of course you live up in the cold so probably should be a little high on cold start 😂 but down here in Georgia I’ve never seen a fresh Cummins engine get over 50psi cold and always at hot temp run around 38psi even at 1800-2100 rpm just the Cummins way but it works
Buy a air over electric controller. Put 12 volt’s into it and hook up to your applied air on the brakes. Otherwise with the true electric ones hook into the brake light pressure switch
Shore power is for the places you are not supposed to idle for long periods of time. Your supposed to rent power from a lot that has a cord on a recoil.
Hellow mark how is the weather up there I live in south Carolina Laurens sc 29360 weather here 35 degrees sunny keep warm an safe buddy good luck with trucks hope your family are doing great buddy
The Mercedes bought Frightshaker and in typical Mercedes fashion stamped there name on anything and everything on the trucks to “increase” the value. The oilfield truck with the rims with the “fill cap” is to most likely fill them with calcium similar to like farm tractors do.
The Mercedes motors was basically a prototype engine between the 60 series and the newer Detroit engines like the dd13 and so on. Most of the Mercedes are in the Columbia's or the century trucks
I don’t know crap about trucks but seeing this channel kinda makes me just want a cab… don’t need a trailer at all… I could just daily the thing… that would be awesome!
Top of the morning Mark and Twinsticks garage family 👋👋...boy oh boy..happy day...what a great birthday present 🎁 too...thank you!!someone may have actually died in the one truck ..ya never know .lol..nehow loved the freightliner classic... However the ford 8-9 000 is in really good shape huh...I suspect you'll be getting another project soon .lol .good luck🤣🤣(w/Mrs Twinsticks)
On that old kw, that's called Hendrickson walking beam suspension, I have almost identical setup on my 94 w/star. It's good solid low maintenance setup. Nice and stable for spreading gravel with. Hard riding though not for comfort. Also referred to as rubber block suspension or sometimes elephant feet. Was common suspension not so much anymore.
Another great video. I wonder what Mrs Twinstick will say if bought Another truck. Make sure you hide it at your friend's place so she won't know about it.
MBE is Mercedes Benz and Detriot belong to same Company. The DD series engines are basically the same Engine platform as Mercedes heavy trucks that are sold in Europe & also down under in Australia & New Zealand. Sterling & Freightliner Columbia were sold with MBE Engines down under. I like that 389 Peterbilt with the white & red paint looked good with dual fenders instead if naked wheels.
Cheers from Brazil!! I really enjoy these auctions videos, already watched all of them. I hope soon you'll start another one project! Ps: I never imagined that Mercedes Benz powered American/Canadian Trucks, Mercedes are common here in Brazil..
The truck Sylvester Stallone drove in first blood Was a GMC M-135 from the 50s I own one…. The truck 1/2 a truck you were looking at. Looked like a 80s-90s AM general 5 ton Had either a 250 Cummins or an 8.3 Cummins.

I was thinking that same thought pattern. It would be a great truck for a starter. It is very unusual to find an old Ford that immaculate.
Mark-thank you for putting in another auction
It's my favorite bonus segment you do
Best thing about Thursday waking up to a twin stick episode!!
Mike Vail is a huge gravel truck operation here in Calgary. He has really nice iron and a huge fleet

The truck 1/2 a truck you were looking at. Looked like a 80s-90s AM general 5 ton
Had either a 250 Cummins or an 8.3 Cummins.
40 oil psi on a Cummins is pretty good
