  • In this episode Reuben and the team from Hulk are back in the Victorian High Country. With a broken vehicle that needed to be fixed, and enough rain ensure the tracks were slippery and traction hard to find, it mean this was going to be one heck of an adventure!

    How to Break in a Ring and Pinion
    The suggested break-in procedure for a ring and pinion gear is as follows:
    - Drive 15 to 20 miles under normal driving conditions (no highway speeds), stop and let differential cool before proceeding, repeat this process 2-3 times
    - Avoid heavy accelerating during the break in process
    - Keep the vehicle under 60 MPH for the first 100 miles
    - Highway driving also requires proper break-in due to the higher heat temperatures produced, drive 15-20 minutes at max 65MPH, stop and let differential cool before proceeding, repeat this process 2-3 times
    - Driving on a new ring and pinion before the initial 500 mile oil change should be under normal driving conditions: no hard starts, racing, off-roading, towing, and should not be flat towed.
    - Change Gear Oil after the 500 mile break-in, this removes metal particles and phosphate coating from the gear set during the break-in period.
    - *Towing: After the 500 mile oil change, the first towing should be less than 15 miles, then let the differential cool before proceeding, Repeat this process 2-3 times

    I’m running 5.13 gears in a 2021 rubicon, and that’s as high as i dare to go.
    I’m easy on the throttle and usualy crawl my way up most things but not every obstacle have to be approached that way.
    Witht the heavy foot you have i would 100% stay with a taller gear set.
    Like someone said below, 4.56 to 4.88 would probably be your sweet spot, but it you want that Ruben heavy foot to stay down, you should absolutely upgrade to Dana 60’s sooner than later.
    We seen the same happen to the boys at Synergy in the US in one of the JL Experience event so it is a well known thing that Dana 44’s are not the absolute best for heavy foot.
    Either way, keep up the great work love the video and stoked to see you in a jeep.
    Cheers from east coast Canada 🤙🏻🤙🏻

    With the weight you have on that. The housing will be the long term weak point. Going back to a 4.11 will help the gears live, but you should look into a rear upgrade as you will continue having issues. The front is good but you should truss it so it doesn't bend as well. Jeep has done a great job making the new axles internals a kot stronger, but they are trying to save weight for government EPA standards with the housings.

    the lower (numerically higher) the diff ratio the weaker the pinion no matter what diff. if you need to run ratio's in the 5's with big tyres and power you need to go to bigger diffs like dana 60's. i don't run lower than 4.56 in dana 44's in rubicons because they already have huge torque multiplication from the 4:1 low range gears. also for the type of wheeling you do 4.56 would be ideal anyway.

    • @Scoobienorth
      @Scoobienorth 11 месяцев назад +2

      People tend to really not understand how much of a parts breaker the 4:1 tcase is, and the Jeep 8 speed auto has a really low first gear compared to most autos as well.

      @@thecapturban we don't the majority of 4wd's on the tracks are ifs dual cab utes and toyota landcruisers. so the level of difficulty on the trails is very low or the tracks are overgrown. if you find one difficult obstacle here and there you're better off just winching it rather than fitting portals or 40's.

    • @thecapturban
      @thecapturban 9 месяцев назад

      @@6226superhurricane exactly.. just sayin the portals will give you the lower gear ratio and a lift at the same time on the 37s they run.. thats all. One of these days, aussie might get rid of that stupid peanut tax, then they could have some real trucks... that could be affordable

    • @6226superhurricane
      @6226superhurricane 9 месяцев назад

      @@thecapturban still wouldn't be necessary, australia is mostly flat with long distances people don't trailer a purpose built rock crawler to go do a short trail. it will never make sense to build a sledgehammer to crack a peanut. so vehicles on 33's - 35's that are capable of everything from daily driver to long distance tourer will always be a better choice. a stock rubicon could do 98% of the hardest tracks with minimal winching.

    As a Toyota fan, I’ll be the first to admit that Jeep has much better flex and capability. A 79 IS overpriced for a vehicle that isn’t the most capable 4x4 but I own one and I love it. Every 4x4 has its strong point and as far as capability I’m not too proud to admit it’s the Jeep. Good on ya Rueben.

    Rube Corey here from the states you need to find a set of Dana 60s or disk brake 70s we here normally get rid of the stock diffs for that exact reason you can rebuild everything with quality parts and one little thing screws everything up

    W also had some failures of the 5.38 on the rear of a supercharged JK, it turned out the crush sleave couldn't handle the power, what we did to remedy it was to set the mesh and take pinion out again and machine a solid sleave, sorted out the problem for about 2 years sofar. If it happens again going 4.88

    32 psi on slippery hills = muppet ruining the tracks for others. Ruben, you need to talk to your HR department and add a clause to your standards of business conduct :) Will also add that the Ranger had no business being on those tracks with those racing slicks

    Nice video. I did a regear on mine as well but I had to break them in or harden them by driving the first 1000km in a certain way at first 30km at a time then let it cool down the slightly longer runs and could not go over 50km for the first 300 odd km just wondering if that and extra power from the supercharger caused the breakage PS really want a supercharger on mine
