Generation 4 was the best looking era of NASCAR stockcars. They looked so insanely good. I heavily regret that I was only 8 years old when they stopped using them, and since I'm German there was no way for me to watch the races back then like I could watch an F1 race. :(
This was a race I’ll never forget. I sat front row just before the start/finish line (just ahead of where Scott Riggs hit the wall), and getting to see my all-time favorite Dale Jarrett win for the final time in person is probably my favorite memory as a child. Thank you for covering this race and allowing me to revisit such a memory once again.
I just recently rewatched this race too. Two flips in one race that's more rare than one flip. I honestly forgot about the winner of the race even though I did watch in 2005.
A lot of people forget (partially because of how older internet discourse becomes harder and harder to find) but this race coupled with the Spring one made Talladega very, *very* divisive among fans. The extremely high number of accidents, the number of championship contenders knocked around, Burton calling everyone out, Jarett winning after doing f-all all day, coupled with the FOX both in the spring race able to do quick calculations on the cost of the Big One, made it an easy-to-hate circuit until the Fall Charlotte race came about mere weeks later with a far worse product. I recall seeing any and every suggestion you hear now start getting pushed then. Among the ones I remember the most: Take the plates off, coupled with rumors (information spread way slower then so it was harder to verify) that they'd be running 240 based off a secret Wallace test. Knock the banking down and turn it into a 2.5 mile Fontana, which was rebuffed with how stupid that would be because everyone HATED Fontana in the 2000's up until about 2011 when the pavement wore out well. Further restrict the cars to keep them from flipping (which gradually happened and did fuckall). And another common one was to gut out Datyona (despite being reasonably average in 2005) and Talladega altogether and never race there again. For a bit more context for this fanbase reaction: prior to 2005, Talladega for the Cup series had been relatively clean. 2001 and 2002 both had a caution free race, 2003's fall race didn't have any large multicar crashes (but did have Elliot Sadler over once and a half on his roof) and both 2004 races were sorta forgettable in terms of incidents except for, again, Sadler going over. That's not to say it didn't have a reputation for large crashes, short clips of Wallace's 1993 flip and big wrecks from '97 and 2000 could be seen sprinkled across the internet. But during the entire FOX/TNT/NBC runtime up to that point Talladega's reputation wasn't solely on the accidents. Alot of people who only jumped in on NASCAR due to its super-accesability starting from 2001 didn't have a way to realize that this was Talladega's true colors. Again, no youtube, clips were grainy 240p and stashed away here and there, and this was before the prevalence of in-your-hand internet which started up around in 2007. If you didn't personally have tapes from the 90's there wasn't anywhere to visually see otherwise. The sentiment in the paddock was probably there before, but old Racing-Reference comments and squirreled away forums saw alot of people pointing out how bullshit (actually smart) DJ's win was and didn't like how that turned out, and it led to *alot* of people vocally swearing off plate racing altogether, which obviously meant nothing considering the 2006 Daytona 500 would turn out to be the most watched NASCAR race ever. Oh yeah and the Johnson hate. Fuck there was soooo much Johnson hate started from him contributing to the big wrecks in both Talladega races this year.
I was 11yrs old watching this race and man this race was so crazy. I was upset that Dale jr crashed out early but was glad DJ won. And the Kyle Petty spin at the end was something everyone was talking about at school the next day.
I suggest another wreakfest from Talledega from that year. 2005 Arron's 312. 10 cautious which was a record at the time, 2 Big Ones, and a flip. I love this series btw
This was my first ever race that I went to, if I’m remembering the date of the race correctly, it was the day of or the day before my bday, I remember seeing Riggs flip in front of me as I sat with my family just beyond the finish line
I remember having a picture of him out of the car after winning with the flag as the background wallpaper of the computer for weeks, oh I was so happy let me tell you.
Mark Martin had the worst luck at the plate tracks. He won at Talladega twice, once in 95 and then in 97(caution free race). Other than that though, plate tracks I believe cost him legitimate shots at the championship.
How the hell did KP drive that thing half a lap?
That's incredible!
Shoutout to how that camera man’s awareness and how quickly and accurately he panned 10:50
Yet fox was unable to produce a single replay of Kyle Larson’s flip
Honestly 2005 had a lot of wreckfests lol. Also the sound those cars made 😍

@@Zoonsky Yeah I hate that I was only 9 when they stopped using them
Those engines were music to the ears just like when F1 had the V10s
Stapleton has a few recent videos on his channel detailing those cars and how they made that sound, super interesting to learn about
I think the Waltrip flip in this race has been one of the more forgotten flips in the 2000’s

I forgot what year it was but Kurt Busch and Chris buescher both flipped at a race. Kevin Harvick also almost flipped come to the finish.
@@Wagon_Attack *Matt Kenseth 2016 GEICO 500
It happened in the 2016 Talladega Spring race
@@Wagon_Attack That was Matt Kenseth
I have never in my life seen the aerial shot on the Riggs flip. Incredible

DJ's final career win 🏆

Try to do the 2016 GEICO 500, that's a real wreckfest and I honestly think that race have a lot in common with this one. Love your videos.
2011 Tums Fast Relief 500 would be a good addition to this series. There were like 20+ yellows that race
I still wonder what would've happened if they stayed green, but I was and still am happy to see Jarrett win one more time.

YOU SAID WHAT.
I’ve heard rumors that Kyle Petty either flipped or got serious air in the final lap crash, I’m not sure how likely that is though
I was on the backstretch when it happened. I don’t remember him getting airborne at all, but I was about 8 years old so my memory could be fuzzy.
his back wheels were off the ground briefly, similar to Nemechek in 2007 in the same spot but not quite as high
If he flipped, even more badass that he went to finish the race.
And legend says, the remains of Scott Riggs' car is in Dale Jr's Graveyard collection of wrecked cars...
I remember that race. Watching Jeff Burton's POV camera scary
One of the most wildest Talladega races ever
@JGR4LIFE no we don't
This race was also memorable for Brian Wavecrest taking out Cal Naughton Jr and the whole field, and Ricky Bobby racing Jean Girard on foot.
the finish is the forgotten finish in the 2000s
Talladega in 2005 was crazy! You should do wreckfest videos on the Busch race and spring cup race from that year.
11:27 That's a interesting way to let everyone know your ok.
Great video. 2020 Fall also was a wreckfest.
ayyye this was the race filmed for Talladega Nights. not a lot was used for the actual movie but still cool 👍
Dale Jarretts last win.

You should do the 1995 Busch Race at Talledega next even the pace car had issues
Jarrett's last hurrah before two abysmal years which lead into an exceptional broadcasting career
the one race that made you scream "UAW" ;)
I remember having a picture of him out of the car after winning with the flag as the background wallpaper of the computer for weeks, oh I was so happy let me tell you.
Who was the Earnhardt in the 33?
Kerry Earnhardt.
do the talladega 2016 spring race
I miss DJ he was my favorite driver when I was a kid.

It was actually Kerry Earnhardt that hit the wall
Between Danica and Mikey, it's a toss up to who can wad up a Cup car the most.

You should do fontana this year it was a wreckfest.
The first time we see the cars fly by, something is kicked up and it cracks the lens.
dud he has two good channels

I got a idea for a new wreckfest video streets of Chicago race 2023

Talladega should be the cutoff race in the playoffs again.
2015 pretty much stopped that from happening.
Single file wrecked the racing?? With today's rules nobody would have finished this race.
Hey, back before NASCAR became a total joke. 2nd year of the chase, but at the time it wasn't complete nonsense like it is today
Once agian nascar ruined a good finish. No reason to throw the caution at the end of that race
