I'm an atheist, however I would like to say that I did a year long choral regiment with almost all Palestrina music. I learned to understand the deep meaning behind the translations, which alone are enough to bring me to tears. Let alone the lovely and powerful notes that the words meld themselves to. Such a shame Palestrina isn't alive today. I'm sure there is so much we could learn from him.

This music sets the hair on the back of my neck to rise . . . these are alien yet human voices from another world, ours yet not ours, a separated world not in space but by time, but still here for ears that can hear. Wonderful.

1) The execution of this music, if nothing else, is an exercise in tremendous skill. 2) Just because music doesn't sound good to you, doesn't mean it didn't sound good in its own time, and can't to a properly-attuned ear. Most music was appreciated as at least "pleasantly audible" when it was written, and can be still.
This is what an "O magnum" should be, beautifully crafted, with a sense of awe, sung with intensity and wonder, and vigor where appropriate. I find it greatly preferable to many of the modern settings that border, if not cross, into the lugubrious.
To all the atheists obsessing over this being music and nothing to do with religion, here are the words for you O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in a manger! The composer claimed to be a Roam Catholic and claimed to compose the music for purpose of the Roman Church. But the music is what it is, its sounds, its form, irrespective of the composer's religion or his religious design. Surely, many great European composers felt inspired by their religious experience. But, their religious inspiration did not alter the physical (acoustic) reality of their compositions. That physical reality bears its own effect irrespective of the inspiration of the person who composed it. An arrestingly beautiful natural landscape is arrestingly beautiful despite any religious belief that a God or gods created it.
@@caprolupo8321 All beauty is a reflection of the beauty, truth, and goodness that comes from the Creator. Everything that is beautiful is an attempt to emulate the Divine. I'm sorry but your comments sounds like you're bragging not to mention it's asinine considering the piece was written to focus on the Creator of universe.

The mantra of rock music is "Emotion over Beauty" I think It self evident to all healthy minds that the works of Palestrina and Michelangelo are more beautiful than the works of Elvis or Picasso. Given the premise, the real question isn't which is more beautiful, but rather the purpose of art. If the purpose of art is to express the feelings of the artist, modern art may be superior. But, if the purpose of art is to be a medium of objective beauty, there can be no contest, the art of the Renaissance is far far superior.
Just my two cents, but I was raised to be an atheist. They did this by simply NOT telling me anything, by not showing me anything, by keeping me ignorant. That is not good either. Teach your children, but do not force them.
The debate is self-evident. How can the glories of Renaissance a capella music survive the onslaught of the drivel that abounds today? The answer is partly that we have become so inured to execrable crap that many have no ability to judge modern rubbish and see it for what it is. That Rensaissance music is still sung is a testament to its brilliance, just as we can know that the vast majority of what has been issued in the last 100 years will not see the light of day in 100 years... or at least it should not!
