Stannis Baratheon is the one true king.
      1. He fought to rescue Sansa.
      2. He fought for Ned stark.
      3. He respected Jon and regarded him highly calling him Lord commander of the Night's watch with a token of respect all while everyone called him bastard all the time.
      4. He was a man of justice( Davos said it many times).
      5. He even burned his own only beloved daughter for defeating Boltons and rescuing Sansa which helped Sansa to escape Winterfell and beg for help to Jon (An act for which everyone hates him now, but only idiots who do not understand the context behind it, as if he loved doing it).
      6. He gave his word to the Jon about making the wildlings citizens of the realm once they help him win Kingslanding, something even Ned( the so-called nicest guy in GOT) wouldn't do.
      7. Mance rayder respected him and wished him luck after hearing that proposal but dickhead was too proud to bent the knee and deserved to be burned alive since he didn't care for his people.
      8. Jon snow hypocritically refused to Stannis for saving his sister Sansa but agreed when she escaped and begged him for help.
      9. Stannis took the Whitewalker threat seriously and rode North even though he never saw one himself, something that even Ned wouldn't do as we saw before. The King who cared.
      10. " We do not choose our destiny, but we must do our duty, great or small, we must do our duty"
      11. " I will take back the north from the thieves who stole it, I will mount roose bolton's head on a spike. I will fight to free Winterfell, or die trying."
All while the other Northern houses refused to fight with him and some of them fought for the traitorous Boltons like the Umbers and Carstarks.
Interestingly, these were the cowards who forced Robb to refuse supporting Stannis' claim (something his far superior father Ned stark was ready to die for) and fight with him and to make North an independent kingdom like the fucked up Iron Islands.
And now, these cowards refuse fighting to free Winterfell from the most despised house in the North.
He fulfilled his duty till the very end as a result of which we see a better North politically speaking compared to season 5.

Was that his purpose, to make me show fear? Or was it one of his pointless jests? When he spoke of how sweet the peach was, did his words have some hidden meaning? Only Renly could vex me with a piece of fruit. He brought his doom on himself with his treason, but I did love him, Davos. I know that now. @@justthunderbolt40 Ppl should really understand by now, that in George r.r. Martins world. Good guys and bad guys don’t exist, no character is evil nor are they the classic noble hero. They are all human, bad things are done with good reasoning behind them. Everyone is the good guy in their own story, and they’re fighting the evil in their adversaries when they wage war. Their opposition shares the same story, everything ultimately boils down to the power struggle. The guy arguing for Stannis understands this for the most part. Magic is power in George’s world, it’s always a dangerous thing and often requires a sacrifice of some sort. Gray area and the other guy love Dany, in their mind she’s this great good the guy even mentions how here ppl worship her. But Dany’s power is in her dragons, who were born out of sorcery. She unknowingly you can argue, sacrificed her child and Drogo to the witch. She dabbled in “dark” magic, I put that in quotes because all magic is dark because it is power like I said. In real life power brings out the worst in ppl, Dany had a dream and walked into Drogos pyre. And when it burned out she was there unburnt and the mother of three dragons. Which is kind of the ultimate power, remember Aegon took 7 kingdoms and made them one with no army at his back when he invaded. Just two sisters and three dragons. So Dany is no better than Stannis, George purposely blurs the lines between the two. But Dany will end up being corrupted by her power (magic) as well.

It‘s actually a couple of reasons (at least in the books):
-He doesn‘t bend which is quite admirable
-had a hard childhood, you kind of feel for him
-no matter how Robert (mis-)treated him, he stood loyal by his brothers side and did what was expected (Roberts Rebellion, Dragonstone, Greyjoy Rebellion)
-one of the few nobles that actually kind of listens to a commoner (Davos)
-knows his weaknesses (for example when others compare him to Robert) and accepts and values „special counsel“ like Jon Snow and Davos or the Mountain Clans, when they are more experienced in their subject than his arrogant Bannermen from the South
-tactically sound and experienced, rather retreats to fight another day then risking everything to gain glory
-with the end of Storm of swords basically the only person openly opposing the Lannister’s and Bolton’s with far inferior resources and power
-saved the Nights Watch and the wall; but this point needs to be thought of if it perhaps was a mistake after the end of Dance of Dragons

Robert gave one of the Grand Titles (and it‘s large incomes) to a little boy st that time (Renly) for no service while Stannis, who fought twice for his elder brother gets a title that later goes anyway to his „nephew“ the son of Robert! You see what this service did to Stannis, would‘ve been Lord of Storms End, there wouln‘t be major problems with vassals when he „rebelled“ cause they woulnd‘t know Renly as their formal Overlord, he had many years to form bonds with them (Stannis wouldn‘t have done that, but they surely would have declared for him)

He decided to try and play the game way too late when he shouldn't have trusted Littlefinger, sent his daughters to Dragonstone, leaned a bit more on Varys' side (although Varys real goal was to put Aegon on the iron throne, the Lannisters' were the more immediate enemies) and told Robert the truth, even if it was on his deathbed. He should have also sent a raven or messenger back to Winterfell to tell Robb the truth of the matter to pledge the North to Stannis (as he was leaning towards doing so on the show but in the Books by the point of Neds' death, Robb had already been on the march) and possibly arrested Baelish for the assassination of Jon Arryn, had he found good enough evidence but that would have been a real long shot.

He was the one of the five kings who really had a sense of duty when it comes to the realm. You can really see that he wants the throne not because he wants to live more luxurious life, instead he really feels like it is his duty to rule justly over Westeros.
Justice is a main theme when it comes to Stannis and this is why I think he didnt get the support he wanted from the noble houses of westeros when he claimed the iron throne for himself. I think that a lot of the noble houses know that they are illoyal and treasonous the realm and even towards their subjects, but that is not important as long as someone like the lannisters are in charge, because they are only concerned about their own well being. But Stannis on the other hand does not forget such things and he does not forgive such things.

Stannis doesn't - and he is a misogynist? The dude that moved heaven and earth to save his daughter when she got greyscale even though everybody told him to let her die? The dude that lets the red priestess tell him what to do? That guy is a misogynist, a woman-hater?
    Come on!
Also: How is Stannis having Renly killed a bad thing?
Renly BETRAYED Stannis and is willing to kill him in order to take the throne for himself. Let's say your parents die, right? Now you have a brother that decides: 'You know what? I'll kill my brother and take it all.' This man has forsaken the bond of blood, killing him is just putting down a dog. Or would you say that Stannis should roll over and let Renly kill him? RENLY was the one that started this fight, how can you blame Stannis for winning it?
Why do many fans love Stannis?
Stannis has it hard and people don't like him even though he always does his best. He personally fought her family, the Greyjoys were widely despised anyway, and she's literally a pirate who is actively threatening his kingdom. The only part I can see her being a woman could come in is that she's raiding like her brothers would, and not wearing dresses (you'd have to call basically every character in ASOIAF a misogynist by that standard) etc. But that's probably the reason at the very bottom of the list, because she literally enables her warriors to kill and rape whoever they like. People seem to forget the Greyjoys suck, just because we don't see their raids from the lowborns perspective. Stannis has very strong morals, Asha conflicts with them regardless of her gender.

The only other characters in the entirety of the series (that I can think of) to extend the same respect and awareness to the intelligence and worth of the common folk are Jaherys and Good queen Alyssan, Arthur Dayne, Aemon Targaryen, Egg and maybe Daenyrs. The members of the Nobility who genuinely look out for the common folk are the good guys, they’re the ones who’d help you out. That’s why people like Stannis.
As to why people don’t like Stannis, well: Stannis has a conscience, integrity, a sense of duty and is completely uncharismatic. This lack of charisma is the reason people struggle to engage with Stannis. He has just as much integrity and duty as Ned, but we don’t get the chance to enter his head and see beyond the appearances that the great Lord or one true king must present.
Remember Stannis as the small boy who saw his parents die from afar. He’s a good intelligent bloke, trying to do the right thing. His biggest obstacle is his personality and the way he communicates, it’s why he has such little support in the Kingdoms. Judge the man on his actions and intentions and you’ll like him, just like Davos the Manos.

Stannis was the only one who didn’t want a crown in the entire War of the Five Kings. But when it was made clear that he was the rightful heir he was the ONLY one who acted in a kingly manner. Robb, who everyone was rooting for, was a child who was trying to split the rightful heir’s kingdom in two. Had he never crowned himself King (or accepted the crown), he and Stannis would have made natural allies. Balon was strictly an opportunist, a pirate and a pillager. Tywin was trying to keep the crown on a bastard child with no right to the throne. Renly was pure vanity. Then you have Daenerys who lost her house’s claim to the throne when Robert killed Rhaegar at the Trident. Stannis is the only rightful heir and the only one who didn’t seek the crown out of ambition or revenge. He was the only one who gave a damn about his kingdom. He was the most fair ruler without being soft or making dumb decisions. He was the most honorable and dutiful ruler. He did everything the right way with the exception of Renly’s murder. Jon said that to win the North from the Boltons he must win the lords of the North and the Mountain clans. He did that. He was the only one who could or would repay the debt owed to the Iron Bank of Braavos. And of course he was the only one who answered the call of the Night’s Watch and smashed the wildlings and still 9 of every 10 of Mance Rayder’s men joined his side. That’s why we love him. He commands loyalty.

What made me admire and really see stannis for who he truly is was the nuances. One thing most people dont notice is that along all the books, nobles constantly smear people as "lowborn" implying they are inferior. Stannis when speaking about this, uses "of humble birth". He dosent disparage, mock, or belittle people who arent nobles. He takes into account only actions and character, not judging based on gender, race or station. In the Asha chapters, while wandering the camp, she notices that while th nobles were kinnda meh about stanniis, the common folk and the soldiers had great admiration and cnfidence in the king.

They were the underdog and even in Roberts Rebellion was based on a lie and a flawed cause, I will root for Bobby B’s cause time after time. And Stannis himself is the underdog of the underdogs. He is the rightful king yet all of the other kings featured in the War of the Five Kings gets way more love. He has to fight his ass off just to fulfill his duties and gets no love for it. Yes, he is flawed but so is everyone. I don’t worship him but I sure as hell root for him because honestly there is no one left to root for. (R.I.P. Ned and Robb)

I want to give some personality reasons. Stannis is on some level, the kind of man men deep inside look up to. There is something special about his brand of honor that really inspires people. In many ways, he's a true man who makes responsibility the core of his being. In every situation, he shows a part of himself that reflects what most men deep inside admire. He points of Jaime's flaw as kingslayer and father of Cersei's kids, but makes sure to acknowledge him as Ser. He didn't want the throne, but he believes in doing his duty, no matter small or great. And for all the talk of Stannis being iron, he actually moves between being iron and being malleable at good points. He actually LISTENS to Davos and Jon and benefits from that, even when he had every right to imprison Davos a second time and manages to negotiate with the Northern Mountain folk of all people. He is a purveyor of justice in that he wished to reward Davos, but had to punish him by cutting his fingers off first.
And he does this despite getting the short end of the stick (or perhaps because he got it and this was all that was left him). Compared to his brothers, he wasn't as charismatic, likable, lovable, good looking, or personable. He had very little going for him. He was dealt a bad hand over and over again. In that way, Stannis feels like person we are most like. We know what it's like to not be born with everything. So when it's Stannis' moment to shine. Stannis is also a play on the chosen one trope. He has a story concept similar to that of fantasy protaganists like Rand Al'Thor, but if you took away half the things going for them. And even then, the prophecy that makes him a chosen one is suspect. This only makes one cheer for him more.
This may be a strange comparison, but I think Stannis embodies some of the characteristics of Jordan Peterson. And when you think about it, fits. In an age of people who are playing men, Stannis' positive attributes come off as the kinds of things people really want to be. And that just makes him stand out.

People always get hung up on the method or morality of how a character kills someone but fail to understand the basic circumstances. Dead is dead, what should Stannis have done? Bend the knee and accept the Tyrells ruling through Renly as the Lannisters ruled through Robert, eventually killing both him, Stannis and likely Shireen as well when Margaery births a son? Fought a hopeless battle in which THOUSANDS of men would have died pointlessly on both sides, leaving Westeros to corruption and tyranny? Or avoid the battle all together and save them, by killing Renly? An avowed traitor and usurper, who himself had ordered his men to kill Stannis in battle and would likely kill Shireen as well. He was even planning to usurp power from Robert with the Tyrells but Cersei had him killed before that could happen but everyone always seems to conveniently forget those parts. As Tywin said 'Explain to me how it is more honourable to kill ten thousand men in battle than a dozen at dinner'?

Stannis ‘da Mannis! Intelligent, Realistic, Committed and Principled. Ridged on what’s Right, and what’s wrong. Along these lines, this is likely why he and Melissandra are compatible ( Dark/Light, “Onions are All Good, or all Bad”...) He personifies “Middle Child Syndrome”....which of course, is an actual, very real thing ... (speaking as a Middle Child and expert on the subject...) He is however a man that is frustrated because he has done everything “right”, and yet, is rarely rewarded or recognized....and that’s all he desires. He keeps trying, Makes Family sacrifices, puts up with siblings mockings, brave and relentless in battle and loyalty, receives Lesser rewards for those sacrifices, unhappy in marriage, yet faithful to wife ( ...until Melissandra), devoted and caring Father - went to all ends to have Shereen cured and feels responsible cause he took the bait, and purchased that doll ( ...until Shereen’s burning) . This is all exemplary, of someone who has had the lived experience of living Murphy’s Law . Stannis cannot win for loosing, and if it wasn’t for bad luck, he’d have no luck at all! Yet he keeps on the righteous path and may believe his luck has got to change if only he keeps moving forward and does not succumb to defeat. He watch his parents die helplessly and after, rejected religion and fairness in life thereafter. He was once sweet & loving ( stuck with his falcon that could not fly and was hard pressed to give up on him. This is the reason he is so Acerbic and has developed that keen wit and sarcastic sense of humor. He is hilarious at times, if you pay attention. WOW sample chapter, a great example. I think he collars and his open to some of Melissandra’s counscil and sorcery, not because he believes, just because he’s giving something different a try because his way has not worked. Deep down I believe he feels he is damned and so just rigidly “ does his duty”, on the path he believes is right, for the outcome he believes should occur, and so thinks let the chips fall, where they may...”Destiny is All”!!!!!

One thing I particularly love about Stannis is that in any other fantasy series, he'd be the Dark Lord.
He lives on a remote island, in a dragon shaped castle, he cavorts with pirates, his number one guy is a smuggler, he worships a foreign God that burns heretics and their idols, he has a creepy (but kinda hot) witch on his payroll, he is kinda ugly, his wife is Lady Macbeth levels of kooky, his daughter hangs out with a mad fool, his reputation is one that's cold and rigid, he is most associated with his tactical prowess, he's called the most dangerous man in Westeros, and he's the only person who gives Tywin pause.
It's only when you peel back his layers (with Davos' POV) do you learn this Dark Lord is actually pretty mundane. He has internal factions of his own, doesn't even believe in that foreign God, and is entirely motivated by duty. He doesn't want the crown because he is vain (like Renly), he is obligated to press his claim because it's his.
All things considered, his is one of the most reasonable factions in the WOT5K.

To put it simply, book Stannis may be the most just and righteous person in the series, often to his own pain and detriment. He is also dutiful, loyal and pragmatic. These traits are hard to come by,especially all in one character. He does his DUTY, always! Steadfast, unflinching yet somehow unrewarded or even recognized. He STILL does what his duty demands, because it is what is expected and what is RIGHT and just by law. It is clear that he has been deeply cut many times, especially by Robert. Especially upon the death of their parents, ANY gesture of gratitude or appreciation from Robert would have gone a long way. But,no. The fat slob who wasn't half the man Stannis is, hailed Ned....rewarded Renly...for the things Stannis had suffered to gain/retain and BLAMED Stannis for things beyond his control!Yet STILL, he stuck by his older brother, because it was his duty! Jon Arryn named hand, no problem. He was trying to HELP Jon gather evidence to SAVE Robert! Through all of the insults and sleights from Robert since childhood, he stuck loyal to Robert. It was his duty!
He stayed loyal to his wife, long past any love because she had starved with him....stayed loyal to Cressen who had raised him, past any usefulness the maester had once had...stayed loyal to Davos, who saved his ppl's lives. Knighting him, naming him hand when the time came. Stannis is loyal, but also just and dutiful. He first, had Davos face justice for his past, because it was his duty to do so! He isn't charming or necessarily kind. His isn't a smooth politician,as he is too blunt and honest to be. Yet, he would make far and away the best ruler of the options given. He isn't cruel or gluttonous or greedy or false! He is righteous and just and would do his DUTY as King! He isn't blind to the game either. He has seen the world for exactly what it is,from his brother's shadow. He can see ppl for what they are and adjust accordibgly. He doesn't make blind to honor blunders of Stark men. He is savvy at the game and also argued to be the greatest military tactician in Westeros! Add all these traits to the fact that the crown is HIS BY LAW, as the rightful heir and ONE TRUE KING and its hard not to love/support him and hope that for ONCE...the dude can get his due/what is his!

You know you are reaching to not like Stannis when you're complaining about how many times Stannis visited Edric at Storm's End. What about when Dany made a deal for the unsullied and then just decided to have them kill the masters once they were made loyal to her and pay nothing for it? Is this not treachery? Should we all jump off the Dany train now because she did that.

    -No

    • @anonmouse6337
      @anonmouse6337 4 года назад +5

That's because you're arguing against a strawman. Dany killed SLAVERS to free slaves AND win herself an army. Stannis kills his own brother for the sole purpose of gaining power for himself. The acts are not morally equivalent.
Also, Renly wasn't taking Stannis' crown. He was (as far as he knew) usurping his nephew, which is exactly what he and everybody else thought Stannis was also doing. And Renly wasn't trying to steal his brother's army or his seat. If you'll remember, the confrontation took place bc Stannis besieged Storms End. So it was actually Stannis who tried to steal SE and his brother's army!

    • @robinsoncallou7937
      @robinsoncallou7937 3 года назад +13

Yeah, no... Renly knew his brother had the better claim, everybody knew Stannis had the better claim... But Renly was likeable, charismatic, easy on the eye, friends with the Tyrells, and single... Stannis was hated, feared, antisocial, and married to a Florent...

    • @Hyperversity1
      @Hyperversity1 2 года назад +6

@@anonmouse6337 you are also, ironically, using a strawman argument. To think Renly didn't know that Stannis had a better claim is ridiculous. Only reason renly thought to do it was because he had the bigger army and that ultimately there was nothing Stannis could do to stop him. Renly is a piece of shit and is not the innocent person you have described him to be. It was a shitty move on his part and it was all predicated on the fact that he thought he could get away with it.

      Danny's dragons
      Stannis' demon creature
The result is the same. People die, and the same method was used which was something magical.
As for Renly, he was a traitor trying to userp the throne who was willing to kinslay. So F*** Renly.
If Renly was King, the Baratheon line would end because he refuses to have children since he disliked women sexually.

    The One True King
    Stannis Baratheon.
It's the secret of Westeros that
"The wall was built to protect The Night King from the One True King Stannis Baratheon."

  • @CrackingCody
    @CrackingCody 3 года назад +3

Stannis is a brave fighter and leader. He's an excellent strategic mind. And his is the One True King. He'll always be my favorite character of both book and show, regardless of who he burns at the stake. He's the only King in the show we see actually put his money where his mouth is. He's at the front of his boat landing on the beach, he's the first to pull he sword and accept his fate against the Boltons, he's blunt and just. Driven by honor and what he perceives as his destiny. It's his duty to be king, regardless if he wants to or not. Long live the Warrior of Light.

    • @CrackingCody
      @CrackingCody 3 года назад +1

Also, it's not debatable: Stannis IS the rightful king. Renly is a traitor for thinking he deserves the kingship over his older brother, thus his rightful death. None of the Lannister kids are Roberts, Robb doesn't want the throne, neither does Balon. There's not talking around it, it's just fact. Stannis is king, regardless of methods used. His brother had it coming. Joffrey had it coming. Hell, I rooted for Robb but Robb had it comin. They were all given choices. They all chose to refuse. They all died. Stannis lived longer (and is still alive in the books).

It's interesting this idea of Stannis as a King who's first and foremost duty is to rationally, consistently govern the realm above all else, and yet he's willing to submit and give his full trust to an entity like Melissandre without in-depth knowledge of where her power truly comes from or why she's so sure of supporting him... And if she's really going to stay true to her beliefs for very long. My idea of a rational, consistent King isn't one who trusts religious fanatics for support and power. Really enjoyed the discussion though!

The reason people like stannis as a character is because of these reasons.
Shows from a young age he has what it takes to be king (holding storms end in a siege as a teen-ager whilst also not stock piling food got himself but eating the same as his men and also giving his men and family food first)
Even though he has an iron will he is willing to listen to others in times of importance (Davos in regards to helping against the others, also listening to Jon when trying to get northern tribes and houses to come to his aid,)
He cares about justice doesn't butcher peasants like the lannisters he treats criminals as criminals.
Book stannis is more or less an atheist,he burns people instead of beheading people like other houses one because execution Is execution secondly it keeps melissandre happy so it's a two birds with one stone deal.
He killed renly (which saved the lives of men in his side and men on renlys side for needless death)which paralles what the red wedding was (genocide under peaceful ceremony) stannis was also right because renly acted on hubris and was a Tyrrell puppet (also couldn't birth heirs as he was gay)

Awesome podcast! So Stannis did have someone kill his brother. What was not on the show, but was in the books, was that Daenerys egged Khal Drogo on at Vaes Dothrak, knowing that Viserys's death would probably be the result. Both were guilty of kinslaying by proxy. Burning the Wise Masters was the wrong example, but Daenerys was the right person to compare. Fascinating discussion!

    Dark magic is bad?
Dany killed a rape victim by burning. This blood and fire sacrifice led to the birth of her dragons. She uses their magic fire to kill her enemies. Is Danny bad?

Kin slaying is definitely bad. Even if Rennly declared war on him wich means Renly was willing to kill his brother and king for power. Even so Renley is still his brother.
Didn't Tyrion kill Tywin? Didn't Danny watch and not even attempt to stop her husband when he killed her abusive brother?

Stannis is called the King who cares by Sam because he went up North to fight the wildlings, the Bolton’s and eventually the White Walker. Stannis cares an awful lot and he cares about saving the realm from evil men and monsters alike.
