I really like the balance suggestion for the sword with your home-brew. Allows it to be flexible and strategic in its use without it feeling over-powered.
Looking to the comics for inspiration, I think you could homebrew an amulet like Jubilee had during her vampiric phase that would allow a character to walk in sunlight. Another homebrew approach you could try is when ranking up, using the trait you get to remove one specific weakness instead of gaining a new trait. So, it you wanted to remove weakness to both wood and silver, it would take the trait plus one of your new power slots, converted to a new trait slot. You could flavor how that happens in any number of ways (blood transfusions, spells, gear).
