Lyrics:
Lookin' at you through a misty moonlight
Katy did sing like a symphony
Porch swing swayin' like a Tennessee lullaby
Melody blowing through the willow tree
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home
Maybe it was Memphis
Maybe it was Southern summer nights
Maybe it was you maybe it was me
But it sure felt right
Read about you in a Faulkner novel
Met you once in a Williams play
Heard about you in a country love song
Summer night beauty took my breath away
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home
Every night now since I've been back home
I lie awake drifting in my memory
I think about you on your momma's front porch swing
Talking that way so soft to me
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home
Maybe it was Memphis
Maybe it was Southern summer nights
Maybe it was Memphis
Maybe it was Southern summer nights
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home

Who else was randomly just sitting around and had “MAYBE IT WAS MEMPHIS!” Just pop into their head all these years later.
It just happened to me today! That's why I'm listening to right now
me just now
Happens all the time. Random songs will pop in my head. Lol. I love this song. 🌼. Pam music is so lovely. I love her voice. Spilled perfume is one of my favorites. "There's no use crying over spilled perfume" 💘
me just now out of completely nowhere. 😆
That's me! Hard rock/metal guy here, and I've always loved this song. Actually met her once back in the 90s, she was so friendly, down to earth, and genuinely just as interested in getting to know me as I was about her. That has really stuck with me all these years!!
Gosh, the 90s were the absolute best, hands down. Takes me right back..
Ditto
Could be a really bad shot and not miss it!! Lol😂
Me too bud!
@@lovetofly32 I wholeheartedly agree with you there.
@@lovetofly32 This reminds me of i was country when country wasn't cool lol oh yeah 😅
One of the most underrated ladies on the planet.
Got that right jack
I totally agree
I rate her 10 for 10
Yep. She has a beautiful voice
Yep
It’s so crazy how just the melody of a song can take you back to so many memories. This song takes me back to being 16 all over again. It was my favorite song then.
Well I agree with you on your comment, Hello Patricia how are you doing 👋👋👋
You should see Kip Moore's video with the song "How High"
Same! I was younger than 16, but I was with my Daddy. I was a Daddy’s girl through and through and wouldn’t let him go anywhere without me. He LOVED country music and country gospel. Anyways, we’d be together in the car and I’d sing my little heart out to this song. Windows down and all. That’s what this song takes me back to every time. He’s been gone 12 years now and I find these songs to feel closer to him. ❤
Golly, nothing like a Saturday errand day, in my new lifted dually with this song playing.
When I was a kid I never really understood why my dad liked listening to the oldies so much. Now I know why. 80s & 90s Country just takes me back to when life was better!
Takes me back to 1992 on an open stage in Detroit. Michelle Wright, Mark Chestnut played, Pam was next and it started to rain... They wouldn't let her play because of the rain. It started to let up and she came out with her acoustic and started singing to those of us that stayed, rain stopped and her band joined in, it was most memorable concert I`ve ever been to!
Awesome!!
Was it at the downtown hoedown?
@@hurtlockerr8661 It was an Miller Genuine Draft sponsored free concert, not the Hoedown (as I recall, but it's been a while). She didn't owe us anything, but she still played in the rain.... now that's true Country! Pam is awesome.
@@nealdeford321 cool I just thought it might have been the hoedown I seen a lot of new Country artists starting their careers at the hoedown . Like Clay Walker Clint Black . I even seen Hank Williams Jr there way back in 82 or 83 it was I think the first year for the hoedown. To be honest with you I didn’t even know who Hank Jr was at that time I went with a buddy of mine that used togo school in Tennessee and then come back to summer in Detroit his parents didn’t want him going to Detroit Public schools . I lived in southwest Detroit & went to southwestern hi school class of 84..I was 16 in 82 and I only listened to rock . But after that I slowly started listening to some country music.
@@hurtlockerr8661 Yeah, I grew up listening to WRIF & WLLZ but when I finally got my hand me down `78 it only had AM... welcome to WCXI country!
Sometimes a person and a song are just meant to be. As times goes by this rings so true because of Pam Tillis and Maybe it was Memphis. Great video that shows her true beauty and sensuous looks.
I was pam's security guard when I worked at the E -center in SLC. I'm 6 foot 5 and 250 pounds and stutter. I told pam her dad was my hero and she got in my face asking, are you messing with me? I told her no I stutter and she said oh bless your heart. What a class act lady. I'm glad I got to talk with her.
I've met her and if she got in your face, she would have had to climb you like a tree. She is one tiny lady.
@KarmicSalt
Well that's a typical repulsive response. From a pathetic male who only thinks. With the head of his little weenie! Unlucky with us ladies huh? I'm not a bit surprised! 🤣
@KarmicSalt yes, yes she is... petite alright... but you damn sure wouldn't know it, when she gets ready to belt one out.. the little lady has one hell of a set of pipes on her !!! If she wants you to hear her, then by damn, ur gonna hear her..!!! I absolutely LOVEEEEE that about her... takes that back after her daddy...I could listen to her sing all night long.. one of the best female voices in country music today.. has a damn good range, to go with it also..!!! I'll be going here in a matter of a few weeks, to see her in Franklin Kentucky, at the Mint Gaming Hall... can't wait..lol 😊😊
She’s awesome. I miss her dad. He was a class act. Philo Bedoe liked to listen to Pam’s dad.
Her eyes are so pretty
I miss when Country Music sounded like this.
@Tillis_pam Yes I am. I know the words to all of them by heart. Modern Country Music just isn't the same. 80s & 90s Country was so much better than today!
We didn’t know how good we had it
Pam Tillis is a fine wine. That only gets better with age. This song is 30!! Way to go Pam!!
Wow
Back to 90s❤

One of the best songs ever
So much better than most of the country songs out now. Not the same any more.
Not enough references to blue jeans or partying and drinking.

Turn it up, close your eyes and go back in time! Great jam.
Pam is one fine looking lady with some of the most purest voices ive ever heard in many years
This metalhead is saying this, this woman can BELT IT!
S A M E!!!
Fellow metal head here, but parents raised me on country... it's amazing how much rock there is under the country veneer in these older country songs. Love it.
Autta hear her live
Oh yeah!
Another metal head right here and when this song comes on a playlist, you can bet I’m crankin it to 11 and belting it out right along with her! She has such a powerful voice!
I think 80's 90's country is better than anything from 2000 to present
No shit...how long it take u to figure that one out 😆.. just busting balls, u right though, they don't make em like they used to..
I agree with you there!
@teddy341 miss Loretta Lynn said country music was dead
She has a beautiful voice when she says “ maybe it was Memphis “

Pam is so underrated, just a beautiful lady, with a beautiful voice
@Tillis_pam love your work, so awesome
@Tillis_pam okay, I'm sorry things get weird on the evil internet. Bur if this is REALLY Pam tillis, daughter of a past great country artist, well I'd be happy to talk to you.
@Tillis_pam I'd love for you to drink some beer with me on my porch, and watch the chickens scratch around

Grace West did an amazing job covering this song on The Voice.
Gosh she had a angelic voice !!! 😍 this takes me back to a better time and a better place of country music 🎶
It was Memphis and it was right. What I would give for that time again. ❤️🥰😘😢
Hello Toni... how are you doing?
Not even close. Memphis is a ghetto high crime liberal city.
Her father Mel Tillis had a most amazing concert in Branson Missouri.....He picked on his keyboard player.I will never forget. ALSO I love this song......she dies have an angelic voice

Hi Tina how's your day been
2002 💔 I can't and I will never forget that year 😪 it sure felt right!!
This song is a masterpiece! Loved it when I was younger, and now I'm about to turn 44, my love for it grows stronger.
No one can ever say country will be this good again. Something about that passion in their voice blended with the bass guitar with suttle hints of 80’s is irreplaceable.
You can tell this was written in the late 80s and arranged by an early 90s Nashville producer.
And that tender acoustic in the break... Pure gold.
I have always LOVED this song. The passion in her voice, gives me chills every time!

Pam, From a 69 year old man from East Tennessee. You’re still on top of the charts in my book!❤
Pam Tillis, literally one of the best country singers ever! And even to this day one of the cutest😊
She is cute in her country, southern style. ♡♡♡♡♡
I think she is THE cutest country singer ever! She's 66 and still looks amazing!
Amen. Definitely one of the cutest. Martina McBride caliber cute!
She is also one of the genuinely nicest people. I got to meet her about thirteen or so years ago. I promised myself that if I ever got to meet her, I'd thank her for getting me hooked on country music (Mi Vida Loca was the song that did it for me) ANd so I did. She got the biggest, most genuine smile on her face and gave me such a big hug that I thought she was going to crack a rib. I will never forget the smile or the hug.
Patty Loveless...all other arguments are invalid lol
Instantly flash back to the 90's driving my first car in high school. God how I miss that time .

There just aren't any female performers as talented today as Pam Tillis has been during her career, so many of her songs have stood the test of time and it is nearly impossible to find any current female artists who compare.

Still bringing tears to my eyes watching it.
Laid my dad to rest Tuesday afternoon. He was laid to rest in the Dayton (Ohio) National Cemetery as he had served in both the Navy (1945-1947) and Army (1949-1953).
I think about our "walk", with him sending me off to school and then off to the military, and then - that last walk as he'd grown old and grey and his mind had started failing.

You said it!

And people said that when this type of country was popular back in the day. Said it was "too poppy, or bordering on southern rock".
