12/31/19 : 7 AM. I just finished this wonderful video. And I'm so happy that you discussed your back issue. Last year I couldn't even hike without Demerol. I don't usually take pain meds. I hiked once/week. And then is when I absolutely had to take it. The pain meds would last maybe 4 miles, and that was it. Man I hurt so bad that I questioned my sanity for being on the trails. I'm pretty much a day hiker. But I carry all ten essentials which are quite heavy. I've seen some day hikers in the Smokies with just a water and snacks. I can't do that. In an effort to lighten my load, I've resorted to using a child's mesh school backpack. It didn't help so I stopped last hiking Spring after attempting to do Indian Grave Gap and almost passing away. I'm working on getting myself fixed. Turns out my back had a break in it that had healed on its own. And I had developed a curvature. So much pain.So right now, I'm tore up from the floor up. My personal physician and a Chiropractor have been working with me to try to correct my issues. I'm using a back brace now. And soon I'm going to try hiking in it for a short hike to see how well it does. I don't know whether this is the end for me. I hope not. I'm gonna take it easy so I won't reinjure myself. I'm so encouraged by learning your story and seeing all of the fantastic journeys that you make. Blessings of Yah, blessed be He, upon you.

Hé Luke! I just found your channel a few days ago and watching all your videos from the fist one and I'm now at this one. Really loving it, can't wait to go camping again or go for a long hike. I heard you pronounce the name of that sausage, it's a Dutch sausage from the northern part of the Netherlands mostly. "Met" is like grinded pork meat ( neck, stomach ), with salt, clove, pepper and some other good stuff. Worst literally translates to sausage in Dutch. Well don't know if you read this but there is probably someone who does! Anyway, I'm going to watch the next video. Cheers from the Netherlands.

Luke I’ve been following you for a few years now, I didn’t know until watching some of these older videos about your back injury.
I’m in a somewhat similar situation, not nearly as debilitating as a broken back.. but I recently dislocated my knee pretty severely. As a nurse, I am on my feet for 12-16 hours a day so the recovery has been slow and painful at times.
This was all right before Christmas of 2023, and fast forward to today, now I am planning my first solo backpacking trip.

I'm a winter storm chaser myself, I can dig where you're coming from. Usually I go to the PA/NY border, lots of snow for snow shoeing. Last time out was a near blizzard, totally crazy. Cold, 13 degrees before the windchill. Winds at 30+, it was actually pretty doggone miserable. Flashlights failed, canister....forget it. I did get a fire going. Scariest part was the 3 hour drive home which took closer to 6!
Hey man, that's too bad about your back. But you have a very good attitude. Rock on bro.

I've noticed that in several of your videos when using a ferrous rod that you push your striker towards your tinder. This is actually the method that most people use. Try leaving your striker stationary right at your tinder and pull the ferrous rod away. This focuses all of your sparks right where you want them and keeps you from bonking your tinder with your striker hand and scattering it. Great videos man, I have become a big fan! Your channel rocks!

Cool vid, I too just came back from 2 day trip at the AT, NJ. I did about 20 miles... No rain but little snow. I too enjoy harsh weather condition as you do. Thinking to buy Hilleberg tent soon so that I won't wet my inner tent during set up and the break. Glad that you are hiking after the accident. The God has given you a second chance... To enjoy his creations. Cool vid mate~

I love your tent It looks massive. If i went on a hike with my dog I think she would like it too.. This is one of my favourite videos. The pace is good, not too fast and very informative.

When I was younger my husband and I went hiking/camping in Scotland with 3 kids under 10, we had to carry enough food and all our gear for a weeks camping. My pack weighed 65lb and my husbands was 80lb. I was so pleased when we stopped to eat because our packs got a little bit lighter lol.

It's 2020 and a couple of months ago, I packed a couple hundred pounds of quartered elk (2 trips x 4 miles round trip = 8 miles total) out of the PNW mountains in my Gregory Baltoro 75 that I've had since 2008. That pack is still a BEAST!!! 🙌
