- When the Nissan e-NV200 was first introduced in 2014, it was seen as just a Nissan Leaf with a van body, but in reality, it's so much more. The new e-NV200 has been upgraded with a 40kWh battery that has boosted its official range to 174 miles, or in excess of 100 miles in real-world conditions; but is it any good? Edd China is your guide.

I don't even care about vans, I just watched this because of Edd China. Was not dissapointed.
Just a small niggle: the on-board 6,6 kw AC charger would charge roughly 3,3 kwh's in 30 minutes. The advertised 80 % charge in 30 minutes is, I assume, done using a chademo (50 kw) DC fast charger, which bypasses cars on-board charger altogether, and thereby allows for faster DC charging.
I think you speak for most of us here lol
Wow Edd China is back!! Legend Mechanic...😊😊😊🤟🤟
couldn't agree more

This van would be absolutely perfect for urban pick-up and delivery.
As Ed noted for small mileage delivery. When you are delivering all over a large metro area such as London this vehicle won't do two round trips from Heathrow to Stansted, 216 miles. This distance is not long for metro deliveries, or for that matter taxi cab journeys during a day's work...
Range is still way too short to be of much use. I drive anywhere from 100 to 400 miles a day just in my local area. I want to have more range than I would ever actually use just so I have a safety net. If they ever approach a 600 mile range then I might start considering an e-vehicle for my work use. The other problem is that Nissan tends to use cheap batteries that don't handle daily charge/discharge cycles very well in the long term.
The on-board charger has nothing to do with DC quick charging. The on-board 6.6kW AC charger can charge the battery to 80% in about ~5 hours, while DC fast charging bypasses the on-board charger and DC current charges the battery pack directly.
^What Zoltan said. Come on Edd! We still love you though.
Had the 24kwh version of this for 4 years, sold it and bought the 40kwh version-absolutely love it
ive had my ENV for nearly two years and 30k miles, I go everywhere in her and shes only 24kw , but I love her , she hasnt put a tyre wrong although she can get through washer fluid....lol
When people assign a gender to a vehicle it makes me want to puke
@@rww805 you do realise that for example in french the word for car is feminine, right? So when someone translates from French to English it's not that odd for them to just gender the words as they are used to. In my native language some words can be either feminine or masculine, depending on context, and it can really make a difference. For example 'the government' when referring to the abstract concept is feminine, but when referring to a specific body like the city council or the premier and cabinet it becomes masculine.
@@fermitupoupon1754 the guy is called countteddy. If English isn't his native language I'd be surprised. No one cares what you do in your language pal.
@@rww805 So you assumed his native language based on his name. Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups. Or is that putting a gender on things again?
it helps people to respect them more, ive restored classic cars for over 40 years and each car has a character all its own , the people I know who treat there vehicles as mere objects to be used and discarded, tend to be bland flat people with little or no compassion for actual living beings.
Soooo good to see Ed China back. Top bloke with a wealth of knowledge, and an excellent presenter 👍👍
After all these years this is the first time I have heard about a Leaf van. Not available in the US. Edd China you are missed. Do more reviews, you are good.
This is one of my favorite practical cars ever. This has extreme levels of practicality and economy.
The size of Edd makes the van look so small. Love to see Edd back tho. True legend 😊👍🏻👍🏻
I own a 24KWh older model. drive is good, I get 50-60 miles with my load & a set of roof bars on, but I dont drive crazy. If you do, the range will plumet like a stone.
Running costs for me averaging 3.5p per mile (home electricity is 14pKWh) which could be much less with much cheaper tarrifs out here. First 1000miles cost £43 including a few rapid charges (service stations). The desil it replaced was averaging 13.5p per mile.
I typically drive no more than 40 miles a day, so range has been fine. I live in a hilly area, goes up & down the hils nicely. Cold weather (below 7Deg) has quite an impact, not just heating, but the battery limits regeneration (gradualy) untill its upto full temperature, which looses a few more miles from lack of regen. I suspect this is less of a problem with the 40Kwh model, as its bigger!
If you were to buy one (2019+), I would suggest the Accenta, with the Cold pack. You can preheat the van before you set off. This can save me 30-45minutes a day here from clearing the wind screen etc. The Tekna has a fancy entertainment centre, with a couple of handy functions that I do like, but as a satnav & stereo to use its awfull. I use my ipad as a navigator when needed, much easier.
Speeds upto 45mph range works well for me, but start pushing 55+ and it drops rapidly, particularly with a little head wind. A reliable 100miles loaded should be possible with the 40Kwh without any stress.
Check out the SpeakEV forums if you want to learn more, it helped me when I was thinking of getting one.
Great to read. Especially the huge savings on 'fuel'.
It would be a lot more expensive, but I'd love Tesla to do a van. Though maybe Mercedes could do an electric sprinter van? If they don't already!?
@@user-jt1jv8vl9r Renault do an electric Master (but it's very expensive!) and VW do an eCrafter, but not in the UK SFAIK. There is also the e-Kangoo which is way better value than the Master, but quite a small van. e-Berlingo is coming soon. They all have feeble ranges which is fine from some uses, but not what I do. Chanje in the US make a 150mile van which is best so far (and it's huge, them being Americans). There is a Mercedes e-vito now and an e-sprinter which should be available this year (2020). There will be an electric Transit in 2021, and probably an e-transporter too, and the VW ID Buzz in 2022. Arrival is a startup making (weird-looking) vans in the UK. Claims 150 miles and UPS have ordered thousands, but not sure when it will be possible to buy one. And finally at some point we will probably get the Rivian (Amazon) van, but who knows when. Could be years. Hmm. Looks like there will be the MAN eTGE available in June 2020 too. Seems like electric vans are really happening starting about 2020. But everyone is aiming at the short-range delivery market so far.
Mini Update, I rcently got close to the maximum load capacity. It drove well, and around town at 30mph it wasnt denting the range too much with the regen set to maximum. 50mph gentle uphill though, and you notice the extra power needed & hence range drop.
Even if heavily loaded around town this will do the job nicely.
Ride was still good on the whole, but noticed the bumpstops with big dips in the road etc.
@@user-jt1jv8vl9r Better layout? Im a bit of a waffler ! :)
@@Wookey. I agree range is stil not enough for many yet. My van is a bit of a compremise, but i love it. If they can do 150miles reliably, then I think that will cause a big shift in the market. We shall see!
Canadian NV200 owner here 🍁. I use my Nissan mini cargo van for work and make about 6 to 10 appointments per day with an average distance of 100 to 160 kms total. The weight of the ladder racks, ladders, equipment, tools, and stock bring the carrying load close to 600 kgs not to mention the wind resistance from the ladders and ladder racks. I'll be shopping around for replacement to my van in about 2-3 years and I hope Nissan continues to evolve this E Van with greater range and batteries that perform better under cold temperatures (-20 C and lower) because they may just have me as a repeat customer.
Great work Edd 👍🏻 More Edd please!
It is great fun to drive. Winning all traffic light sprints. And you can get great battery upgrades at Muxsan in Delft, the Netherlands. Vastly extending your range.
I’m following this channel because of Ed!!!
Love Ed, but I wanna see him tinkering on cars. Someone make it happen please.
Have the first model , had it nearly 3 years . Trading it in for a transit custom as need to carry more weight and a 3rd passenger. Absolute dream of a van to drive
We recently purchased a second-hand 2016 Nissan e-NV200 7 seater van for our family. We just love it!
I pressed Subscribe, and I want more of Edd and of course more electrical car news. I like the eNV200, convert it to a 2 person camper would be nice.
When it’s going to be Available in the US ?
Edd’s back!!! The force is restored...
Great review. The Nissan e-NV200 is a good van. Best of the EV ones.
Edd China you magnificent bastard! I remember you from years ago on Wheeler Dealers. You, sir are a legend!
Jeez I’d love an electric van. I wonder when these will be available in Australia. Edit - They ARE here! Thanks Ed.
They are? Where? Would buy one tomorrow if they were for sale.
The e-nv200 I was riding was made in Spain. The run is good. Fuel economy is also good. It has two outlet's. I am satisfied.
I am hopeful that the new battery tech on the horizon will absolutely will make EV's outright attractive.
Just having a poo and watching Eddie China
Ironically everyone thinks of electric vehicles as new whereas they actually preceded internal combustion engines in the infancy of road car history. If they had kept at it and put as much money and research into electric engines from the early days as they did into internal combustion engines things would have turned out differently.
Is this van available in the US ? Great video
I have a fleet with 5 of them. Always wondered when the states would get the electric version. Getting 22.5 miles to the gallon with them. Thanks Ed. Great video!!!!!
Came for the EV, subscribed for Edd 👍
Why not start every electric car and van review with “immediate torque”.. “speed and agility”.. “planted chassis”.. “silence of driving”?
I am now ED The White! I feel old looking at Ed with gray hair, I used to love the old mod/repair shows.
So the e-nv200 has a dual battery system - the drive batteries under the van, and a traditional 12V battery under the hood, for onboard and cab electronics and electricals, but are they connected? Does the drive battery charge the 12V battery? Like an alternator, in a petrol/diesel van? Or do you have to charge it at an EV station?
Glad Edd China is back on track with a new series. 😊
Perfect for me... the 40kWh battery is spot on...without a robot driver or my dog... I nod off after a couple of hours and could probably use a break anyway...
As an electrician this van would tick a lot of boxes. I normally drive to a job and the van is sitting outside all day, so range isn't a problem.
As a fellow spark, I can confirm it does work well! :)
solar panels!
The onboard charger is only used for L1 and L2 charging, not when you're using CHAdeMO charging. CHAdeMO charges at 46kW, the 6.6kWh charger takes 4-6 hours to charge the car (depending on how discharged it is.)
Great to see ed doing this I think ed would be brilliant on Top Gear
Unplugging @1:12 and not closing the red flap to protect the type1 port is a pretty bad habit, do the same on the Chademo and something will break off when closing the charge door.
Is it possible to purchase (or import) the E-NV200 to the US? Do you have recommendations to resources to start this process?
question how fast batery degrades if it like leadf gen 1 than is big problem?
You should put a disclaimer under all of Ed's videos, explaining that he is 7 foot 6. All these Vans look like they wouldn't transport the shopping when Ed stands next to them.
Nice! I hope they bring this electric version to the United States!
It would sell but nissan is retarded
You can get a better electric van in the US: the 'Chanje V8100'. Claims 150 mile range (and much bigger). Of course if you don't want a van that big, then yeah, you're knackered - there is absolutely nothing available in the US yet.
Do you have any idea when these will be available in the United States? Ford is coming out with one in 2021
Hello, thanks for the review. Can you tell me what is the range of that van if she were loaded with 400 kg every day in a working day? In city work. Thanks and greettings from Portugal
At 20 grand it's well priced compared with the competition
Love the video and the van tbh used to hate it but now quite like it
The Edd Factor! Love it!
Love watching you Edd, bit you need to adjust the battery charging explanation so that people don’t get confused, the onboard 6.6kw charger is not to be confused with fast charging, that is an external 50kw DC charger.
Norwegian automobile federation tested it in summer condition and got 171 miles range, so that is nice.
A question for Edd: Where's the continue of the "Edd China's Garage Revival" and the "Built By Many" online series???? Those shows weren't succesful...or what??? I still miss you in the Wheeler Dealers!
I look forward to when EV Vans will have a 300 plus mile range & 30 minute quick charge. When that happens, it will revolutionize #vanlife! I’d still be tempted to get the eNV200...but unfortunately it’s not available here in the States.
what about those NY taxis?
There is also a camper van version now available.
Recommend these for short journeys/ deliveries. A decent sized van with electric. Also a driver who has auto licence only or manual can drive it. Winner!
Are you suppose to charge it everyday even if you don't travel the full maximum range or can you charge it as nessasary
What about an instruction video on how to upgrade the 24 kWh version to the 40 kWh version? Of even to use the new Leaf battery with ~60 kWh of capacity?
Hey guys😃💪, I'd Like ask where is MAIN SWITCH To disconnect the batteries? Thank you for Answer
Great review from Edd China......factual, interesting and entertaining......
What's all this about instant torque eating tyres? I seem to have missed that bit.
Weird how they have kept the Type 1 AC socket when the Leaf has changed to Type 2..
Ed is a real professor
No mention of "rapidgate" which affects the usability greatly ?
That was fixed. And I don't think it ever affected the vans only the new leafs
The vans have active cooling unlike the Leaf. Rapid gate not so significant. Watch Bjorn Nyland's channel on NV200
this van has active battery cooling....unlike the leaf
@@whocares264 It has fan driven air cooling not liquid cooling like the industry leaders .
@@johnnorth9355 correct ... it has active battery cooling...unlike the leaf
I’m a highway safety inspector and have just been given an e-nv200 LWB and it’s generally impressive except for the turning circle 😂
It shows me 170 miles range on a decent morning and even if I avoid Eco mode, it does them 😊
Talked about the chatimo but did not show it
Can you review the new Transporter t6.1 please.
That corner at 50 seconds in is haunting me..i see it in Films and car reviews loads :) is it at MIRA Edd...thx
Nice video. Would like to see this in U.S.A. Market.
Wish this came to the US
Miss seeing you Mr China on your tv shows
Ho Edd, welcome back mate :)
You mentioned a range of 100 miles. Our Zoe has a range of about 120 in winter and 170 in summer, so a big difference; I wonder what the range range for the e-NV200 is. It's 40kWh compared to 44 for the Zoe, as well as being a bigger vehicle, so not surprising it's less. We would swap the Zoe for the camper version of this if it had the Zoe's range.
Norwegian automobile federation tested it in summer condition and got 171 miles range
It's 4.2 cubic metres Edd, not 4.2 metres cubed which is more than 4 times that capacity.
why don't they make one that will charge while you drive instead of only when you brake?
It needs to go further for a charge. A company NNOM is working on a battery that is nanopowder that can go 9000 miles on a 8 minute charge.
I have one of these and I'm saving up to get another van but a diesel.....u get an average of 120 miles and it drops rapidly especially in the cold weather so dont put the heating on or go on the motorway as it'll drop even more . Noticed when I charge the battery it used to be 155 miles but now it only charges to 130/40 miles . You can charge it anywhere like they say as someone is either using it or it's out of order . So your in panic mode when u drive on a motorway , when it is freezing and u have no choice but to put on the heating ... They could improve this especially in the 21st century . I'm definitely going back to a non electric van for the future
Great van reviews, will you be doing the new transporter t6.1 ?
Eddie can you review camper vans
"80kwh electric motor" that's kW not kWh for power.
A minor but annoying mistake made by nearly every electric car reviewer
@@djhvideo Especially as Edd, presents himself as an engineer in this video? Wiki reveals why: "degree in engineering product design from London South Bank University" So he is at best only competent in structural engineering, but most likely not as such a degree focuses on design, socioeconomics and production cost analysis.
@GeeKIller Confusing, I know, but he is right. The onboard 7kW charger is used if you plug it into 240V mains. But if you plug it into a DC rapid charger then it'll charge at (up to) 50kW (directly, using DC). What he really means it that the onboard charger 'allows' itself to be bypassed for DC charging. And yeah he _really_ shouldn't be making the classic kW/kWh slip. I'm pretty sure Edd knows better really.
I hope to see Edd China presenting on Top Gear one day.
Ed, get your stuff together. Not only you're confused about the AC and DC changer (which is pointed out earlier in the comments) but also about ECO and Regen. Eco just limits you output. Regen (B on gears, different switch) determines how you regenerate. I have Nissan Leaf with he same drivetrain.
Ed looks huge next to this van, or van looks v small next to Ed.
E vehicles will only restrict people's movements, or is that the plan ?
Hi I'm Edd China. All his Fans Go "The Legend"
Type 1 port whaaaaat? Can these be converted to type 2 and CCS?
You get a type 1 to type 2 cable with the van. Still odd that it's type 1.
Can't be converted to CCS chademo and CCS are very different can't easily be converted
Conor Nugent US/Canada uses type 1. Maybe Japan too. I wish they’d drop Chademo in favour of type 2 and CCS everywhere
Yeah Nissan is a bit slow to localize their cars to other markets (Type 1 and Chademo being big in Japan). At least their EU Leafs come with Type 2 these days (though still Chademo alongside it), perhaps they'll transition the van to Type 2 as well at some point. Wouldn't expect CCS any time soon.
I looked at a e-NV200. (I was waiting for a sales pirate as I couldnt see the van I'd actually gone to look at.)
Im a mobile detailer and carry a water tank in the back along with the rest of the kit.
My local Nissan dealer said... Dont buy one.. If my tank leaks or spills the battery under the floor would be an explosion risk. The diesel version would be a better bet for my needs at the mo.
The fully sealed and encased battery under the floor? Its not the same as a mobile phone. Its a very, very, very low risk. Its got to cope with wet roads and puddles. I would worry more about the volume of water/weight that you want to carry in any van.
Awesome vlog ❤
I use a transit tipper. If it had 3 seats & could tow a two ton ifor Williams trailer I would consider it. Also I find with batterie tools if you heavy cycle the batteries like through a strimmer or chainsaw the cells fail & need replacing in a short time.
Out in the forest at beginning of vid.....what’s the van plugged into??
😀fantastic review Ed!
This is a Leaf pack, though I think they run AC through it. They should offer it with the Leaf Plus pack too.
Lucky you found that charge point in the woods.
Why is this not in the US 🙁
At 1.13, never knew they now have charge points in the woods ?
So sad we don't get this option in the United States. In fact they're discontinuing sale of all Nissan vans this summer. Bummer.
I tried one, (one day loan) i was told the range was 174 and found 100 miles unloaded that was a average day. I was told the charge time with a normal plug was 21 hours (yes twenty one) wow and the cost is £5 to charge. It can go down to 8 hrs if you pay £500 for a super charger. The real down fall is the depreciation as they depreciate worse than any other vehicle. The price of £20000 is very far out your looking closer to £30,000 that's with the grant from government. I did agree fast good drive nippy no complaints. Would say for me the technology is getting there but not yet, there are no diesel free zones yet in Yorkshire so that was not a consideration. It's the resale value in 3 or 4 years that you have to consider or lease one.
I see Edd, I subscribe. Easy.
actually it's still better in almost every way than a tesla. It has a dashboard, it is spacy it is practiacal. It just has everything that needs to be in a good electric vehicle
Get rid of the centre consol and put in twin seats or have that as an option
4:35 onboard 6.6kw charger takes 30mins, is that meant to be 66kw?
