  • James Gurney paints the automatic doors of a supermarket grocery store in Kingston, New York. As he demonstrates the step-by-step process in watercolor and gouache, he shows what colors he uses, how he pushes the painting through the “ugly stage”, and how he is inspired by French philosopher Emile Zola, who encouraged artists to paint commonplace subjects.
    ART SUPPLIES:
White gouache (M. Graham): amzn.to/2O2fCUk (gouache)
    Yellow ochre (watercolor): amzn.to/2XYzvSB
    Transparent red oxide (watercolor): amzn.to/2Y6NhxD
    Ultramarine blue (gouache): amzn.to/2Uy40tA

    VIDEO DESCRIPTION
In this tutorial demo, painter James Gurney paints the doorway into a Hannaford supermarket in Kingston en plein air using a watercolor sketchbook. He shares some instructional tips about choosing a commonplace subject and persisting with a painting through the “ugly” stage.
    Quotes from Émile Zola:
“The past was but the cemetery of our illusions: one simply stubbed one's toes on the gravestones.”
(Le passé n'était que le cimetière de nos illusions, on s'y brisait les pieds contre des tombes.)
“A work of art is a corner of creation seen through a temperament” (Une oeuvre d'art est un coin de la création vu à travers un tempérament)

And whatever lessons James sells is so economical! His video lessons sell no more than $30, while other artists sell between $75-$200! I would fuss over purchases from other artists if spending that much is worth it, but not from James.

Actually, his technical books are compilations of free blog posts. So, it's very likely that these free video's will end up in a DVD or a book. Also, the free stuff is publicity for the paid stuff. A business model the music industry took a long time to figure out.

Agreed! It totally caught me off guard! XD For a few seconds I was just trying to see if there was any certain reason why he made that observation, but there was none and I realised how nonchalant and at ease he was when he said it. He was simply observing and painting and that helped me understand his mindset when painting a lot more I think.

The past is a cemetary of illusions. We merely stubbed our toes on the gravestones. The modern world gives us visual opportunities our ancestors never would have dreamed of

Loved it! This is not an easy one! These types of things are really hard subjects to paint. Well done James!

Amazing work. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the "ugly" stage and that even you have to push through it by having faith in the process. Thank you for letting us see beauty in the ordinary.

    *** The Ugly Stage ***
Thank you for mentioning you also (or still) suffer from that! I wonder if the likes of Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Eyck, to name a few of my close neighbors, suffered from this too. I also recognize the timing in your video, where it looks like "Oh dear...he'll never get that back on track". I've learned to remember from previous paintings or drawings I made (less a problem with drawings, actually) that "the cat will most likely land on it's feet" and that I should ignore the vertigo I feel. But I do still.feel.the vertigo.every.time.

Now that is literally getting into you painting. :) We like it when you push the values of a limited pallet. It displays the mechanics and advantages of working in primary colors from a position of experience. Thanks

I love watching you paint places I've been (lived in Kingston for quite a few years). It really makes me feel like what surrounds me is magical enough and inspires me to go out and paint my surroundings. The quote at the end really brought it home. 🧡

I understand about the feeling about the ugly stage of a piece of art. Though sometimes my stuff never makes it pass that part....
