"sweep picking is the thing that every rock player THINKS they want to learn" haha so true. Either until you see how difficult it can be or until you get too old to care lol
Yup, some people never bother to learn it because they don't listen to that type of music. But in the back of their mind they kinda want to learn it for bragging rights 😅.
generally leans more towards modern metal than say, classic rock, where you're more likely to find classic shredding than sweep. but both techniques are good to master.
*HELPFUL TIP:* For the 3 string sweep (8:50) Tyler uses his middle finger and his ring finger for the B and G string respectively. This might not work for you. Try using your middle finger and your index finger for the B and G strings respectively on this sweep. It seems weird, but if you're struggling with your left hand, this might be just what you need. I tried Tyler's approach when first I started out sweeping and my fingers would just not speed up. Tyler's approach is NOT wrong, but it may not be the best for you, as it didn't work for me. I learned this approach by watching Brendon Small sweep. It works because of the natural angle of your hand being perpendicular to the fretboard. Give it a try.

Modern rock guitar techniques is like actually the best. I have all you courses, except for the beginner one, and I love each one. Thanks so much you've been a big inspiration
How are you at it now? I’m exactly where you were 2 years ago haha, classically trained for 12 years and I rarely use a pick. Decided to tackle sweeping this week and it takes some incredible patience…
It's so nice to see a real guitarist who actually uses his pinky (unlike so many guitar hackers who play like they only have three fingers). Notice he plays one string per fret for efficiency of playing and ability allowing him to play with speed AND precision. Very refreshing!
Some don't need to use their pinky. That's like saying using your thumb is bad, or any other "it's not the right way" bs. It's all what feels natural to the player and what technique they can comfortably use. For example, to play the "Hendrix chord," Jimi didn't need to use his pinky as he had long fingers. I can't play that style chord without using my pinky. And what do you mean by "one string per fret"? Did you mean "one finger per fret"?
