As a fan for 5+ years, what in the world are their full time jobs?? Over 3.5M subs, merch brand does fairly well; I figured this has been it for the last few years.
Don’t forget to loosen or even remove the anti-rattle bolt when actually towing. Otherwise that point load will eventually strip the threads and render the bolt useless. Some brands have them on the top corner to mitigate this I think. Great mod! Your shins gon’ learn today.
"anti-rattle bolt" - I have a tow-bar on my recent car and I now know I need to look for an anti-rattle, thing - I had been thinking nasty shims or something. And, also about the lock-in load-pin : I drilled mine to take a padlock - wowee was it some VERY serious steel! - even with three sizes of bits, a drill-press and some WD40 it was a serious slog to drill it.
Guys at the ripe old age of 40, I've just bought my first Honda Civic (ep3 typeR) and the first mod I'm doing to it is the obligatory chopped sticker, thanks for all the great content, keep up the good work lads, can't wait to see what's next on the chopping block
Nice paved road on this makeover. Subaru seems like automotive Lego. As a 1990 Volvo Station wagon owner, 11 other older Volvos I've been through, I can't get over the way a station wagon just makes life more fun. Gear, fresh air camping, and still have a nice car. Great series boys!
I put a tow bar on a 97 civic sedan. Hauled a bike just fine. And by bike I mean 125cc motocross bike on a golf cart trailer. Good times rolling up to the motocross track in that thing! Seriously, best riding years of my life using that setup, and it just screamed send it.
I expect them to fully build out this motor to top reliable spec. So oil baffles, catch cans, etc.... and basic intake mods, more boost... etc. not maxed out just as much as you can do and still count as being reliable
I think it's pretty funny that you guys and Mechanical Stig have both put out a video on installing a factory towbar on a Subaru in the past month, purely serendipitously. Probably should use all your tips to put one on my dad's subaru as a christmas present.
Here these parts need to have TUV approval. You see them on more that 50% of all the cars. Hatchbacks, wagons, crossovers SUVs. Almost everything and anything. I used to tow two trackday motorcycles on a trailer behind my Renault Clio and now behind my Volvo V60. The factory could also install electronic fold away towbars on more and more new cars. So very common in the Netherlands.
In Australia the tow bars are meant to be ADR approved. Hence MCM was not completely correct with getting a custom tow bar manufactured. Most manufactures will have a certificate on their website.
I drive a convertible S550 Mustang with a hitch on it for my mountain bikes! When I pull up to the trail centers, and see all those trucks, I'm glad I get to have more fun drive to and from the trail in a more fun car
That's great. I love it when having the tool for the job is not excessive. I don't understand the guys that buy huge trucks just to put some bicycles in the back. Just make sure your license plate and taillights and blinkers are visible when you have your bicycles on. I've seen a car get rear ended once that had bicycles because you couldn't see them braking or signaling.
Adding a tow bar can be a good thing. Since most cars are front heavy, then adding a bit of weight at the rear just means getting closer to 50:50 weight distribution 😎
Yes a few pounds is good, but speaking from experience if you actually try to make a car that wasn't 50/50 from the factory into a 50/50 car, you will have major problems. The car is designed to work with the weight balance it has. When you add a lot of weight on the rear, you can actually increase the pendulum potential and it can be dangerous. But yeah a tow bar is no problem!
10/10, biggest thing I miss about my Liberty (currently broken) is the the practicality. Wagon + towbar is an awesome combo. It's also fun to hand out a chop with a trailer in tow.
Definitely recommend a locking tow bar pin. My dads old Amarok (now my car) had the towbar tongue stolen a week after getting the car brand new and he bought one when he got a new tongue fitted
Got super pumped when you said you were gonna pick up a couple bikes after the install... and then disappointment... lol love the show! You two are Legendary!!!
Tow bars are a fairly common accessory for scca autocross cars here in the states. you can stay in stock class while adding a bit of stiffness to the chassis. With that being said, i was shocked at the price! A good tow bar here in the states is usually only $150-300 USD depending on the vehicle.
In Italy a factory tow bar costs in the realms of 1000€. Even more sometimes. It must be retractable as you are not allowed to just drive around with the tow hitch out. Also the installation needs to be certified and put in the registrations papers .
In Europe and Australia, towing with your vehicle is much more heavily regulated than in the United States, this is where most of the price difference comes from. The tow bar has to be officially certifed by an institution that's somewhat similar to OSHA or NRTL in the United States. This will obviously make the part more expensive, but it will also ensure that even the least expensive parts you pick up in a store will be of good quality and will actually be safe to use. In Europe, the tow bar also has to be installed by a certified mechanic if there is any welding involved, plus in some countries (Germany for example) the installation of such an accessory has to be noted in your vehicle's registration since you're making modifications to the crash structure by replacing or modifying the rear bumper support. If you get a tow bar installed by a mechanic, you will usually pay around 1200-1700€ depending on the type of car you have, but that price will include the parts, the labor to install it, as well as the relevant entry in your vehicle's registration papers so you can actually legally drive around and tow trailers with it.
Ah ha! Yes, this is what I had done to my Honda Accord sedan. Just to attach a more convenient bike rack. And it was the best mod ever. No more straps, trunk access, superior security. Better visibility and aerodynamics. With the 200 lbs tongue weight, I can also attach a small storage box. Or tow a small trailer too. Suddenly shopping at IKEA or the lumber yard wasn't a hassle anymore. But oh man is it expensive in Australia! I think I paid under $200 for my new aftermarket tow hitch.
I had the factory tow hitch installed on my Outback 3.6. It looks so much better than most aftermarket ones! Integrated into the bumper rather than dropped below the bumper. I tow a 2500 lb (1100 kg) travel trailer. Trailer brakes also make a huge difference.
I drive a 1st gen Scion Tc and was getting tired of taking my mountain bike apart to take it places. Picked up an aftermarket 1 1/4" receiver for just shy of $200 USD. It's not rated for towing but it can handle a bike rack with zero problems. It has since made bike transportation easier and saves my cars interior from dirt and potential leaking brake cylinders. Needed an impact driver to remove the factory tow hook, a reciprocating saw to make a hole bigger to get hardware into the frame, and a torque wrench to get everything torqued to spec. Trying to get 60 ft-lbs of torque on your back in a driveway is not easy. Have also been pretty happy with my Kuat Sherpa bike carrier.
Probably not too difficult, especially as all the rear light circuit is next to it for the trailer. You'd probably only need to wire a secondary circuit into the brake and ground leads to an LED array. It would be a pain to remove before inserting the hitch every time though
As a dude that has had a towbar fitted to his last 3 vehicles there's a huge benefit that hasn't been mentioned. Towbars make the rear end of your vehicle significantly more robust, I've been rear ended quite hard with one fitted and beyond some minor damage to the plastic bumper the rear of my char held up really well indeed. The front of the other dudes car was absolutely fucked... No brainer

I’m one for leaving the tow ball on full-time. If someone gives you an accidental tap from behind in traffic they get a nice little front bumper dent and my back bumper is all gravy.
I hade a slightly longer tongue on my Ranger, It's been rear ended twice by people on there phones and no damage to my ranger but both of them had to be towed away as they left a pool of coolant on the highway.
A question for you two great guys...any plan to modify a people mover/7 seater etc. I will need one for my kids but I still have want for something sporty. I have thought about a Subaru Tribeca or maybe a Kia Sorento.... something with a form of 4wd but I'm not sure where to go or what to get.
Not sure what country you are in, but if in Aus/NZ/GB look for a Mazda MPV, can get them with a Turbo and 4WD. I have a turbo one and it's seriously quick when you put the pedal to the floor. Previously had a 4WD one (not real 4WD, only sends power to rear when the ECU feels car needs it) and it handled twisty winding roads really well.
Marty, I put a LED light cluster in instead of that cap. Plugs into the trailer lights socket. Gives you more tail and break lights. No one has attempted to rear end me since 🙂
Thank you for putting up footage of Jindabyne! Such an amazing town and beautiful spot in Australia. Hopefully I get to bump into you boys for a lap at Thredbo this season! 🚴 ⛰️
I put a tow bar on my lifted Miata last year. Best mod. I towed my harbor frieght 4 foot by 8 foot kit trailer 900 miles this summer. It's perfect for hauling two dirt bikes with a drink cooler!
The company I work for makes a hitch that hides under the bumper, it's called a Stealth hitch. If I ever have a car on bags I will definitely get a stealth hitch so I can slam it and not drag hitch. I machine the hitch 'center' that the ball mount locks into. Free advertising for B&W and I think it's a badass product. Hitches in general do add chassis stiffness, which is always good.
crazy actual watching this, i've been doing towbars for a good 8 years (making/fitting) so it's pretty cool to see this industry finally get some glory 😂
If you've got a sunroof then the bracket weight is a moot point. Running w/o the ball still gives a good recovery point. Its saved me. The receiver was about the only thing sticking out of the snow when I spun a sedan going 140k's after hitting a wall of it just past an intersection.
Tow-ball (noun). Heavily engineered item, usually made from steel, mechanically attached to rear of vehicle to allow towing light implements. Ideal for smash your shins on while putting groceries in the boot.
You are attaching a lot of assessories to your Levorg. In stead of the Thule roof box, you should get another Swedish roof box - the Calix Aero Loader - which is the only aerodynamically correct design on the market. And it looks cool (or weird, depending on how tethered you are to what you are used to seing). Check Bjorn Nyland's review on RUclips.
One thing I do is I usually put a heavier rated hitch on then what is recommended for the vehicle size - this isn't so I can tell more but because the standard truck / ute hitch receiver diameter has much more aftermarket support for things like bike racks etc - plus there's more bearing surface so whatever you plug into it will rattle around a lot less!
Those tow bar prices are crazy, here in the US there are two major manufacturers of tow bars, Curt, and Draw-Tite. For my 2012 Honda CRV EX-L AWD it's about $150 USD, Class III spec. Love what you guys are doing with this project, definitely a mad Subaru
Hos love a good tow. By the way gents, NSW HWP have friggin Predator vision for D shackles without the rated, yellow pin. I've even heard of people being threatened with tickets for having unrated shackles on their tow bar that aren't even in use. Have a good one!
Got my mk5 5 cylinder, 5 speed, Jetta. It came with a tow bar. I wanted to remove but always thought it may come in handy. Thanks for showing me how mad it could look at the same time! Practical, man!
Not sure if "wrecker" type tow trucks exist in Aus or if it's all flat decks, but when towing a car from the rear with a wrecker, cars with hitches make it much easier to hook up safety chains!
I got a tow-bar for my Lancer sedan, to tow a box trailer and since I don't use it most of the time I made up a fog light to go in its place when I unbolt the hitch, and yes the fog light is wired to the front factory ones so when they are on it all works!
that's one of the few mods me and my dad did together. We put a hitch on my mom's Toyota minivan. it's great for towing around camping supplies and kayaks
But wait, where’s the bike rack?! I installed a 2” hitch on wife’s suv. I have a 1.25” hitch on my STi hatch that I use with a bike rack when I want to go hit the trails. Surprised everyone doesn’t install one on their car - tons of accessories available, including a wheel rack so you can drive your track car to the track with your track wheels attached behind the car!
I'm thinking of converting a 2013 Forester for car camping, so a put in pull out sleeping platform, SUV tent(attaches to the bootlid) plus a Goal Zero power pack that comes with 50-100 watts of solar panel for charging stuff over the weekend. Ad some reflective cutouts to the windows for privacy/stealth and Bob's your uncle.
Just a little tip for piece of mind, when i fitted my tow bar i locktighted the bolts (even though they had locking washers/ lock nuts) and then put a paint marker on the bolts so i can check them at a glance. It may seem over the top but they can come loose otherwise (ask me how i know :( ).
Think about it this way: Yes it's added weight, but it's also balances weight distribution by adding weight to the rear to help offset the front weight from the engine.
Added a tow ball to my Magna years ago was like $120 from the wreckers but had to custom wire the plug off the back of the rear lights. Worked great (Y)
atleast Subaru is nice enough to have prepared wiring for the tow bar unlike most VAG cars, in which you would need to run wires trough the whole car, and then needing to flash new software to a few different modules.

crazy actual watching this, i've been doing towbars for a good 8 years (making/fitting) so it's pretty cool to see this industry finally get some glory 😂
same here. not the most glorious job out there
If you've got a sunroof then the bracket weight is a moot point.
The best part is that now you have the perfect place to put some truck nutz!
"What's happenin next? DON'T KNOW!"
That right there. Adventure on, Brothers.
I love the old school MCM music being brought back for this episode!
I have 3 stickers coming for my new mkv gti project car cant wait till they make it to canada love you guys
I think you two need to get yourself a van / camper and work on that ! Kitted my van out into a camper and it’s great fun making it yours
I thought the same thing, I think my curt on a 18 Subaru Forester was just over 300
Hos love a good tow.
Gotta love the OG first season music...You've come a long way, Team Evo.
Not sure if "wrecker" type tow trucks exist in Aus or if it's all flat decks, but when towing a car from the rear with a wrecker, cars with hitches make it much easier to hook up safety chains!
Time for you guys to add "Best boating channel" on the internet.
I wanna know when moog is going to release the new bangers that he’s made his music is something else ❤️
I got a tow-bar for my Lancer sedan, to tow a box trailer and since I don't use it most of the time I made up a fog light to go in its place when I unbolt the hitch, and yes the fog light is wired to the front factory ones so when they are on it all works!
Was hoping the first step would be to jack up your car when the older MCM jam came on! Nice build guys, I want one!
that's one of the few mods me and my dad did together. We put a hitch on my mom's Toyota minivan. it's great for towing around camping supplies and kayaks
Use my Skoda Fabia 1.2 Monte Carlo for towing my dinghy, get some weird looks but it does the job beautifully
That’s a tidy job. Very nice
This music gives me some good retro chills…. Basically it’s the same video as years before, reshelling the Ol‘ liberty 1😂
Deja vu! I'm sure I just saw Benny put a towbar and a bike rack on a Subaru last week!
Not that I'm complaining 😁
Think about it this way: Yes it's added weight, but it's also balances weight distribution by adding weight to the rear to help offset the front weight from the engine.
Should get a rainlight that fits in the slot and can plug into the wiring for the towbar, for when the towbar is taken off
I have a towbar on my 2004 Toyota Caldina GtFour.... Its great having practicality along with power and handling of a 4wd turbo
Last tow hitch pin you'll buy!!
Let's Go Aero (SHP2040) Keyless Press-on Locking Silent Hitch Pin for 2in Hitches.. 👍
Best boat channel on the internet.
Added a tow ball to my Magna years ago was like $120 from the wreckers but had to custom wire the plug off the back of the rear lights. Worked great (Y)
Always think of basketball when I see chrome towballs lol . Thanks guys
What do we want?????
Mighty BOAT Mods!!!
When do we want it??
Yesterday!!!!!! 🚢 🚣♂️ 🚣♀️ 🛥 🛶 ⛵
A full size weld in can stiffen your chassis like a strut bar might. For anyone interested
Being able to fit a towbar (to tow my boat and other toys) was a big reason why I got a Levorg instead of a WRX.
I got a pro to fit my e46 with a towbar. It took him 3hrs, and he was an expert. It was delivered on a pallet by a forklift... cost was £550 fitted.
atleast Subaru is nice enough to have prepared wiring for the tow bar unlike most VAG cars, in which you would need to run wires trough the whole car, and then needing to flash new software to a few different modules.
FOX MTB make a cool fox head logo insert/cover for the hitch
At work and settled in to eat my lunch and saw you posted a new video. Yay!
i always have hitches on my cars, 13 kia soul 02 ford taurus and magnacharged g8gt
