  • Classic car restoration - it's never simple, is it? In this short video, we bring you up to date on what's gone on to help our 1981 MK1 Ford Fiesta become roadworthy again. As ever, things don't quite go to plan, but that's cars for you!
Our aim it to make this retro Ford roadworthy again, rather than a full-on restoration. We're tacklinhg the jobs one at a time, balancing it between our other project cars, time spent on other RUclips ventures and the postman!
This episode shows the good and the bad; the rear suspension is looking a lot better, with standard shock absorbers and coil springs, so we make a start on doing the same to the front suspension.
Removing the rocker cover, while mid-way through changing the oil, made us question when this poor old Ford Fiesta last had some attention. It was pretty grim under there. Not to worry, we bought a tin of Wynn's Engine Flush and thought we'd give that a try.
However, running the engine for 40 minutes, without the fan working, was only going to end one way. Oh, well, off to eBay for more parts it is....

Our first car was a 1980 Ford fiesta L. The rear parcel shelf made a useful nappy changing table (high up on Dartmoor in a northerly gale! ). We also took it on the ferry to Sweden and drove to and all around Finland one summer. It didn't miss a beat and was great fun on the gravel roads in Finland 😊

Skip the car show and spend more time with your lovely wife. As for the sludge, you'll probably find that using high detergent oil will gradually remove it. Some say using that "causes leaks," but it only reveals the truth of the engine's condition.
Keep up the great work, am loving the channel.
    Cheers from Christchurch NZ.

A good friend of mine in college drove a bright yellow one of these for all four years.
He was a 6’5” hockey player and it was quite a sight to see him getting in and out of that little banana colored box. He really loved that little car though and we all loved watching him drive it.

      @robmog88 8 месяцев назад +1

Agree with that, the classic is mainly car clubs showing pristine examples, good auto jumble if you’re looking for parts. Small resto area with demos done by one of the technical colleges. Lots of dealers selling more modern classics.

Don't waste my time with expensive snake oil engine flush, just throw in a litre of diesel as I have done for over 40 years, same effect.

Used to go to the NEC years back but the price of a ticket these days is bonkers expensive.
Loving the little Ford. My mum had a MK2 for a few years which was a great little motor. Great drive, very chuckable, kind of like a sophisticated Mini.

Oil changes have been neglected. Thats what causes that. 😞 Despite it looking Fab. the engine etc was neglected. Its a beauty !!!!! nothing TLC wont fix

My first car should have been a mk1 Fiesta, but the insurance was a bit more expensive than I’d budgeted for, so I had to compromise. I got a Peugeot 104! It was a great little car too, but mechanics hated working on it…. All Things Alex is selling one if you’re up for a challenge… it needs a head gasket, which on a 104 is an engine out job….!

Yes to the NEC show - I go every year, biggest show of its type for sure. If you’re there Sunday, I might see you… or more likely you’ll spot me first! 😉

You can do it in a day, depending on how long you dwell. Car clubs, auto jumble, auction, car sales, tool vendors, main stage etc. There’s also the Restoration show in March which would be more up your street and maybe something you could exhibit at?

    • @UKBarnFinds

We’ll definitely go to the March one and, possibly, get a small stand there.

The worst fiesta i ever saw for emulsified oil in the rocker cover. It was so bad the cover was completely full of sludge the only space was the tappets rocking made an indent in the solidified oil. The engine ran but sounded awful.😁❤

Every time I do an oil change I do an oil flush, my cars keep going therefore I Know its a good idea, I also used to do it when I worked in a Jaguar shop back IN THE uk.
no question if you're a real car guy in the UK you go to the NEC, OF COURSE IF YOU'RE A HEN PECKED WOOSEY YOU WILL STAY AT HOME, THE CARS WILL STILL BE THERE WHEN YOU GET BACK and YOU WILL FIND LOTS OF 'stuff' TO BUY.
