"I know I'm ranting here."
No, you are not ranting. You are explaining professionalism and integrity. Thank you for that!
Yep!... exactly correct! You just used clay to loosen up all the crud and, sealed it back down to the paint with wax.
Easier and faster is usually not better... just easier and faster.
I’m very impressed with the honor and integrity! It’s a rare thing these days!
couldn't agree more. when I detail eight to 10 hours is not uncommon everything is to be as close to New as possible.
its not paint he's putting that clay on, its the clear finish, thats what makes the vehicles gloss, you don't any product to make it glossier, the manufacter already done it for you, you all can get sucked in thinking other products will make it shine but its just a gimmick to take your money, unless your blind and you can't already see the gloss on the vehicle. thats why the manufacters finish off thier cars since the mid 80s with clear coat, thats for those in the know, and the ones that don't know, but you can spend your money on those prodcuts that won't do anything but take your money is all.
Scott, thank you for showing me the CORRECT and HONEST way to prep a car and seal it. Tired of all the greed. Give your customer the very best educated job you can. Make it look absolutely beautiful and keep it beautiful for a long time. Even if I have to take a price reduction. Doing it this way will bring in repeat business and referrals. Doesn't take that much longer to do a beautiful job, nor will the cost of materials be that much higher. Manage the time you have, and find out how much extra time you have. Present the car like a fine, expensive piece of jewelry as opposed to a cheap watch at Walmart. Show some care, respect and honesty to all your customers and everyone else. They will beat a path to your door, because no one is doing it your way, the old fashioned way.
Scott is an old fashioned guy. What a breath of fresh air!

OK in summary he says: Car wash soap doesn't remove all the contaminants, so the clay does more work and simultaneously doesn't get the panel totally clean. So, if you clay bar with wax you are pushing grime into the paint.
Thank you, I wasn't prepared to listen to the whole clip. Can't people just get to the point
Man i looked at a hand for 21 minutes
Your point is exactly what I was thinking right away when you said clay + wax at the same time. Just not picking up what the clay could alone, and pushing contamination around and into the paint + sealing it. Agreed ! Seperate steps are more effective + are the proper way to do it. IMO
I totally agree with you on not screwing your customer over
tom martin yah. I’m just learning how to detail my cars. This is so true. Thanks for the info.
You really are passionate about what you do. Big respects to a man who's always striving for a job properly done.
Air Force core value- INTEGRITY. Some people just don't have it. Great video. School these kids on ethics and morals!
John Rosado Ethics and morals I think our current president could use some of those character building techniques
This is a great video, thank you for your insight.
social rocks ....yeah, I mean...Obama was out of office for a year before he even made that comment...but his cult of leftists could definitely use lessons on decency, civility, ethics, responsibility and morals, though, that's for sure.
If its wasn't for Obama, your hourly wage would be low and high for the unethical Christian right building $10 million parking structures while the poor are frightened away by their armed guard thugs. Oh yeah, Christian churches dont pay taxes. But dish out lot of crap.
Gnet Bird...wow, you are really ignorant, absolutely clueless and totally lost. Wages had remained stangant for decades until the last couple of years under the Trump administration. Oh wait, you're talking about FAST FOOD EMPLOYEES and their "Fight for $15" nonsense that ended up ushering in a lot of automated jobs taking the place of human jobs. Yeah, that was brilliant on their part, wasn't it? So while your hatred of Christians is obvious, so is your ability to lie. Nothing you said is true or makes any sense.
“Appreciate it guys, it’s a 20 minute video, just wanted to talk about quickly”. Happy you didn’t take a seriously loooooong time. Just kidding Scott. Thanks for your enthusiasm, professionalism, and most important, your honesty!
I agree with you. You just sealed in the dirt you wanted off just to save a few minutes.
Two questions Scott........1: What is IPA? 2. To make sure I understand the process correctly. Wash, rinse, clay bar, rinse again and buff dry with Microfiber towel. The reason I say clay bar before drying is to take advantage of the wet surface to help the clay bar glide. I do keep a bottle of quick detail spray to assist if a area does dry. After that I rinse entire vehicle again and dry. I know a long explanation but are you with me so far?
Now that my method is clarified.......
Wash, rinse, clay bar, rinse, dry.....This is where the paint prep comes in right?
After the paint prep is wiped dry
Now I can go into correction procedures, scratch, swirls, chips etc....
Then polish, wax, and finally sealant?
Final recap
Wash, rinse, clay bar, rinse, dry, paint prep, corrections, polish , wax, sealant, cold one and probably Advil for my arms and shoulders.
What is the difference between polish and glaze and where would that fall in if glaze was used?
Note and I don’t see it as wrong or right but seems to work for me.....I will was entire vehicle at same time but for clay bar, paint corrections, polish, wax, sealant etc...
My method is I will correct, polish, wax, sealant one section of the vehicle the entire process then move on. I usually break it into four zones, roof, nose (hood, front fenders, bumper), center (doors) and finally tail (rear quarter panels, trunk/ lift gate). My logic is maintaining the current protection of area that may not be done in one day. (Weather, daylight, other life’s tasks etc...). I figure any protection is better than none. I also understand the clay bar to remove any wax so panel is only protected by clear coat. Instead of getting the entire vehicle 25% done I can get 25% of the vehicle fully done and protected.
IPA is basically rubbing alcohol.
And you need to use a sealant before waxing. You seal the paint, then add the beauty/depth
The world needs more people like you with great ethics. Thanks for this info.
I agree with you. I don’t use that method. I wash vehicles with Clean Slate soap and then clay it. After I clay it I wash it with a detail soap and then I compound (if needed) then polish. After that step I wash it a 3rd time and then wax it before I use a UV sealant.
I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and figuring you washed with soap and water first prior to the video starting. Would that be a correct conclusion?
Nice vid Scott . Nothing like being honest with your customers. Thats how we people that work in the field get return customers and we can sleep at night, knowing we were honest.. well done Scott. brother.
You should use a different microfiber towel for your paint prep. Otherwise your towel has synthetic sealers and spray wax in it.
Agree, I hv been detailing for over 20 years & I hv to go over this with people all the time.
why not just use a apc alone after your contact wash to get rid of the traffic film then get rid of conditioner and then use a wax as a clay lube????
Good For You!
I teach and my philosophy is: Never do anything that would ever compromise your Integrity.
At the end of the day, all you have and have any sort of "control" over is what people think of you which is your Integrity.
Never compromise.
Do it right.
Scott i took a few of your ideas amd made them my own. I like using the purple power vehicle and boat wash...its very slick....i use that as my clay lube and instead of using it in a spray bottle...i have it in a foamer nozzle...it stays on the surface longer and added to the lubraicty...it works great and the soap breaks down traffic film bc its not pH neutral....leaves the surface very clean before applying my sealant
Hey, I'm a noobie but I'm glad there's an old school head like yourself to teach us the way online. Thanks man!
@Frilu I want the cold hard truth from a REAL professional like Scott
Totally agree,cheers mate
Refreshing to hear a professional act like A PROFESSIONAL

People call you an idiot and say you don't know what you are talking about but since when do you ever listen to your Wife. No seriously, we Detailers appreciate your straight talk and product line neutrality as most products are good enough. Thanks for the tips! I
Watching your videos is more than just getting from "A" to "B" which you can do in 5 minute video. It's like attending a seminar on how to think like a detailer. It's learning the "inner game" of why you're doing what you are doing which actually changes your whole experience of what you are doing, because you are no longer just going through the motions...
Integrity is a missing factor n people lately... Thank you !!!
Omg dude...spit it out. Get on with it.
No Shit!
Phillip Davis Couldn’t agree more. God damn it!!!
yeah just tell us before I run out of data
500 dollars lol
20 minute video that should have been 5.
Great information but long winded you turned a 3-4 minute video into a 21 minute rant. Less is more but please get to the heart of the matter in less time. Ppl will not sit through a 21 minute rant as a matter of fact I cut your rant after 5 minutes and just went to the end.
Exactly. I started watching but got tired of the continual ranting and just stopped. Rather than talking so much, make this an informational video and get to the point. When someone wants to know something, don't try to dazzle them with BS, get to the information.
"Real quick"???? More like real long. This should have been a 5 minute (10 at the most) video.
Great content and excellent delivery Scott!
I absolutely love this channel... subscribed. what you say makes sense. you tell us the truth
wow!!!...thank you for the kind words:)..awesome to have you on the channel
is this that you not you we with the clay with the spary wax dirty there for you rub in to the paint ? there for you need a official or by name a clay lubricant that does t go in to the paint ? or after you use spray wax you need to use a real wax ?
True true woooowww!!! Yesss
Brian is Right :D
Sounds to me, that you are a true professional that takes pride in his work. I am the same in my field. Always do the best job you can! Keep up you great work! Thanx
thank you Dan:)...much love my friend

It's for those that didn't get it the first time...
Use a mild soapy water one teaspoon of Dawn Dish Washing liquid to a bucket of water and a hand mitt to gently wash the car rinse good and use a detailer spray to clay bar dry and spray ceramic spray and buff
I liked your video, but you could of said all that in 5 minutes instead of 20 minutes. Does makes sense though.
I agree 100% if you use your head and realize what you’re actually doing and think it through you realize you can’t believe what they tell you
You sound like Ray Romano lol 😂 cheers from Sydney Australia
Andrew Paige - but Everybody really DOES love Scott; Raymond? Not so much.
Communications is an incredible thing, as a mechanic for many many years almost 30 actually before I switched because of my back I am the salesman extraordinaire because I tell the customer why, that's right I tell my what they need and why they need it nut not just selling them a product that they don't need but explain to them why they do need it that being said Scott I think what you said was important but I will say that you could have cut this video into 10 minutes and still got your point across extremely well I will keep watching you but it is hard sometimes because you keep going over and over and over the same thing and beating it to death, keep doing the great videos I love the information you've taught me a lot and I greatly appreciate that God bless you
Good man!
Glad to see someone that does know quality within themselves,
That sells itself then to take a dollars for mis knowledge/ unknowledge people.
Subscription earned!!
you right on this one scott ....aboslutely right...
Great ethics dude, but long speech man. We got it the first time.
Well in all fairness, the solution for a clay lube is simple & you had the easiest solution in the video. If you dont want to waste more $ on detail spray.... take a bottle of clean water, some say distilled, you could use Spring water, or purified water, + add a few drops of your favorite car wash liquid like the Meguiars Gold Class in the video.
(Turtle Wax Ice Car Wash is nice too).
So intuitively if your clay is removing/ shearing off contaminates from your clear coat, what better fluid to flush it away- but the same surface safe soapy water you used to wash the vehicle in the first place?
My Grandfather used to say, "Do a job that you know is great enough to sign your name on it." Integrity.
I KNOW, and I have to live with myself.
Under a Big Maple Shade Tree,, Wash with a little Dawn Liquid Dish Soap in the water to remove old wax, grease and grime,, Rinse WELL,, then use Mothers Clay Bar Kit on whole truck, kneading frequently,, Wash again with Meguires Deep Crystal Liquid Car Wash,, Rinse WELL,, then, with a 3500 rpm, six inch Orbital Polisher, use Meguiar's Ultimate Compound for the bad scratches,, and with orbital, use Meguiar's Ultimate Polish on the whole truck,, Finish up with Meguiar's Gold Class Carnauba Plus Paste Wax,, leave on over night and push it off in the morning (I say push, because it comes off so hard that you have to literally - 'push it off') then finally,, Buff the hell out of it with Micro Fiber towels. Took 35 Hours to do a 1998 Chevy S-10 Pickup Truck. Baby Ass Smooth and you could see your reflection like it was a mirror.
Paint prep is a must after clay in my book. Good vid Scott
why not just use a apc alone after your contact wash to get rid of the traffic film then get rid of conditioner and then use a wax as a clay lube????
Love ya Bro. In a day of "how to get away with doing as little as possible" You stand with integrity and doin the right thing. Kudos brother. Better job for your customer and You Beaming with pride and honor- old fashioned virtue. And YES there is a difference in the protection and longevity of the finished product.
Scott, I appreciate your honesty and straight forwardness. You remind us that we have to go back to being a people of integrety on our job and doing the very best we can in our craft. Thanks so much.
Best detail videos on the tube love your honest approach scott.
Why wouldn't you wash the vehicle again after the clay bar? Dry vehicle then a good waxing and a quick spray wax for anything you missed. Also I use a lot of water as I clay instead of more products on that paint. Am I wrong?
Hey Scott, Great video. I was wondering how often should you clay bar your car and when do you know when to stop using it and get another new one. I usually clay bar my car at the beginning of every season. Thanks for your help.
every season meaning 4 times a year??
here in dallas and since i don't use my daily driver every day and its garage kept, i can go once a year or even longer before i need to clay.
You sound like a great honest man!! Don't change!! You'll reap what you sew!! Thank you so much for the information!!
Why don't you ever help us out and put links to the products you recommend?
I appreciate the thoughts and tips. Its like I tell my son all the time... Dont short change the process and rush anything in life that involves cutting steps. Not planning and executing right in anything you do will ultimately come back to bite you by forcing a redo either earlier than planned or by loss of potential future business.
i would say many people have different goals on their details...best to speak on the phone before meeting with them...some only want to spend 100 while others will spend $500... just explain what you do for $100 before you start jobs... i was a boat detailer for many years and all customers are very different ...communicate and explain what you can do and let them decide...some people just want a car to look good so they can sell it etc... not rocket science...if you only want to detail to high end people then that's your choice...but being professional does not mean you can only do things one way...
Hey Scott enjoying your videos, would you ever clay the car while washing? Seems intuitive that you would have the soap as lubricant and rinse it off after you’ve clayed and the leftover residue you were talking about would come off in the process.
If you're paying for a product you want it to work the best possible and work for the longest. Like you say make it last as long as we can by doing the job correctly. After all its money being spent so make it last as long as you can.
Finally, a business man in the car industry that wants to be transparent, your expectation on your work is high and its refreshing. I'll definitely be contacting you since I'm in Dallas, near Richardson. Thanks for the videos.
I got a comment I appreciate this guy's enthusiasm and dedication but you have to become an economist with words.. You are way too loquacious and that makes people lose sight of what your point is that. Just say what people are doing and then immediately what you should do and then if you want to go into detail do that if people want to stay with the video but 21 minutes and not getting to the point you lost most everyone
scott please go to best buy and get a microphone and don't let that wind ruin your nice informational videos
I just clay barred most of my pickup today (got interrupted). It's 17 years old, never been waxed, clay barred and never garaged.
I started with Mothers detailer as lubricant and then changed to diluted car wash soap. The soapy water worked much better.
In my mind, and I'm obviously not an expert detailer (LoL) but I know my way around cars, it makes absolutely no sense at all to try to wax and clay bar at the same time.
BTW my pickup looks great, I'll give it it's first wax in a day or two.
I subbed , I could listen to this guy all day and excellent advice .
Scott, if you dont mind, I'd like to see more of your video tutorials.....You sound like a VERY professional detailer & I appreciate that.
Ok, so if we should not use the spray wax as lubricant to clay bar the car, what else should I use when I want to use a clay bar on it?
It's in a spray bottle, it's simply called clay bar lubricant.
Very informative video Scott. I have been doing that extra step of wax/grease remover prior to sealant and I can see and feel the difference of the sealant bonding so much better to the paint. I cant do it any other way now! Results are fantastic.
Although I love the simplicity of Yvan Lacroix' wash-clay-wax idea.. I am with you on this. Always prep the surface before applying any sealant or wax!
I do a 50% IPA mix and it gets grippy indeed, do you know of DuPont's Prep-Sol alternative that are also available in Europe?
Why not just use a film remover after snow foam and use a ipa after you contact wash it then clay bar with the rinseless wash and wax
Rank amateur here, but I have always washed, clayed, washed, then applied Klasse AIO, then Klasse Sealant. I may buy my 1st polisher soon.
Man, great lesson but it's way too wordy.. LOL. Thanks for your passion about car care and the lesson you just pounded into my brain!
Hi Scott, I love your videos and learn a lot from them. I'm not pro but I do love detailing my own vehicles. I basically do what you did in this video but I use Prepsol for the final wipe down. I'm very interested in possibly using one of these new Ceramic coatings for my next detail. I'm not really educated on these coatings and I'd love if you could do a video on them, how you feel about them, which ones do you recommend if any and which ones can be purchased by a DIY guy like me. I've noticed many of these products such as Ceramic Pro has to be applied by a certified installer. I don't want to go that route, I'd rather do it myself. I'd appreciate your professional opinion on this subject. Thank you!
So after you use the clay bar, you use the paint prep, after you use the paint prep can you put on a mother's wax or a meguiars wax?? Anybody did I hear him correctly
Scott, I've heard some people use plumbers putty for a clay bar and I've also heard of using modeling putty or those 3M removable mounting clay strips that you can get for a dollar or two. Of course the plumbers putty, modeling putty and the mounting clay strips would be a lot cheaper choice than a detailing clay bar. You ought to do a side-by-side comparison of the four of them on a Auto Hood you picked up at a junkyard to see which one is and the pros and cons of each one. And if there is a viable substitute for auto detail clay bars. just an idea if you're next video
Hello I have a nice sports car and I am thinking of using a clay bar to clean up the paint a bit more than it already is. I am new at using a clay bar. My question is this. The McGuires Gold car wash you held up in the video contains car wax, I was just considering buying it. So do almost all of them. You said applying wax or having wax in the surface was to be avoided, Is there one brand of soap that's better 'than another ? I have been using Eagle 1. When you want to get a wax free dirt free wash what should you use for detergent ? Also what is the lubricant you are using ? Talk about different brands and the pros and cons. Also can the clay bar be used on vinyl stripping like 3M 1080 or bumper covers, essentially any non-metal pained surfaces. I would say NO but I would value your opinion. Thanks
Wish all retailers were like this guy. 90% of them use shortcuts
Is waxing after claybar treatment a good practice?
I use spray wax as lube when claying .
Dry of
Then i re wax with paste
So. You are putting good, long lasting wax on a layer of short lasting one. How long do you think it will stay on a car? My bet is, as long as the base wax.
@@pracakosaipilarka4301
No as i remove spray way before i re apply my good wax
@@bradsciberras6791 you did not mention it before. My bad.
With your paint prep, how do you cut it? 1:1 or 4:1 ? I purchased the wax and grease remover but need to know how you cut it. Thanks so much
less words please get to the poiint
If a jobs worth doing its worth doing well so good on you.
Great points well made Scott. Love your honesty and integrity as this maintains the absolute relationship with your trusting customers. All power to ya Fella.
Hey Scott! What's your opinion on using the soap you wash the car with as a clay lube??? The very first time I clayed my truck, that's what I did and it seemed to work just fine. Opinion please...
He’s right on point don’t doubt his knowledge
Ray Ramano lol man you sound like him to me ha ha. great vids man, ya crack me up!
@11 minutes into, I’m confused about what he’s trying to say lol I’ll just go
To the nearest local gas station car wash and ask for the “wash with UV wax protection.”
How bout that ?
same here, he makes things to complicated..
That's why you are the professional!
Another great video :)
why would anyone ever think that it's okay to use a spray wax as a clay lube and ALSO as a wax.
It's a spray wax, not a real wax or a sealant like Duragloss Or Collinite 845.
I like how you do things the right way.
I think you need a nice cold beer 🍺
Your channel rocks! subbed yesterday, you're such a cool guy :D
Informational but for those just browsing... Let me save 16 minutes of your lives for you. Before you clay bar, first clean you car; the professional in this video uses a product called paint prep to properly clean the car; eight ounces for $32.
M Engels I can't find the particular name. Author does mention it's by DuPont (he thinks). You have an idea what it is?
Jill-of- All-Trades sorry no. Not a clue. Maybe in his other videos but I’m not sure.
why not just use a apc alone after your contact wash to get rid of the traffic film and then use a wax as a clay lube????
Thanks i love this video so educational also live the how to make to big bucks but doing it the right way would love to see more educational videos on detailing the right way thanks keep up the good work
Bro I hope you get to the point quicker with your customers than you do with us lol
brilliant advice and brilliant vid ,love it, from Ireland
I agree with you, glad you are as honest, non bias as possible, but less rant more explaining why, why not, and the other. I fell asleep woke up and I still did not a clear ideal I had to listen to your long rant twice.
Hello Scott
I been detailing cars for 5yrs and I learned alot from others and knowing the fact of claying. To me its the best thing ever, instead of getting a whole new paint job. removing everything off the paint and having it nicely clear & smooth. Then polishing/wax and honestly I rather take my time doing the job right. Never doing any fast jobs. For the money I want my clients to have smiling faces. Seeing your videos gots me learning a few more and thanks for that Scott.
You get the finish you want depending on how much you work on it. I am always precise and go through all the steps I need to, It doesn’t matter how long it takes. When I drive my car, I want it to look respectable and blind everyone else on the road with a brilliant finish.
Scott show us the right way now. wash , clay, cutting compound, polish, glaze , wax ! 🤝
12hr video
After you clay always use a ipa
@@jc4074 ipa?
@@jc4074 yes I always drink an Indian pale ale while detailing my ride 😎
Didn’t watch the whole thing only about half and made complete sense. Never had this idea but for sure I wouldn’t do this method.
What kind of clay bar is best to use on cars?
If it's worth doing, It's worth doing right. I don't think anybody gives a discount for a half assed job. At least I've never got one. A Discount
Excellent Video! Way to hold to your values and quality standards instead of being able to get in with the flow of the industry of making more money faster! Liked !
Hey Scott what about doing a decontamination then foam the car again and using the foam as a clay lube? Then the soap and clay bar would be working together, rise at the end and you're done...
