The advent of RUclips which launched on February 14th 2005 has only increased this exposure. Originally billed as a social media website, RUclips has grown exponentially to become the second most visited website on the planet after Google’s own search page and has evolved to become an outlet for the creativity of the general public many of whom have used the platform to launch their own television and movie careers.
However, back in those early days there were fewer restrictions on the type of content that could be uploaded and this meant that disturbing or scary images could be shared without warning to an unsuspecting viewer. Furthermore, early RUclips viewers weren’t always as switched on to fake videos or amateur attempts at making movies as they are today and so many people viewed disturbing footage thinking they were seeing something genuine.
As such, when people viewed some of this early content it often had a much bigger impact on them than they do with people today, modern audiences tending to be more sceptical about ghost or UFO videos for example. This truly was RUclips’s golden era for the scary video, it being fuelled by popular movies such as The Blair Witch Project and the Ring films that introduced the notion of video media being touched by dark forces into the popular zeitgeist.
So, this year as we continue our march through the creepiest month of the calender, we thought we would take a nostalgic trip into the RUclips archives and revisit some of those old videos that chilled us to our core and often left us wondering, what had we just seen. And was it real?

It's funny you should mention RUclips. I was just thinking about how they need to update some of their features. In fact it was originally billed as a site for new, struggling musicians to share their work and initially limited videos to those that were music-related. That's why one of the primary features in a playlist is whether to play randomly or in order. So many people began uploading other videos that they soon expanded to most (if not all) videos. BTW, RUclips launched on Dec 15, 2005.

One of my favorite old school scary YT vids was the one with the car rolling down this green mountainside peacefully ending with a zombie doing a jump scare. I know it’s not the same type of videos here but still a classic

As an aside, Lazy Masquerade has a deepdive video into the 'Why you never became a dancer' video. It's an interesting watch and handled respectfully. The clip itself is creepy, but knowing the story behind it is chilling and how disrespectful it actually is. Its so saddening. RIP Reiko and the other victims.
That was a fascinating, heartbreaking video by lazy.
I remember a few of these in the early days of RUclips. It was eerie how many things have changed. Once again, the Top Five crew delivered another video to keep us warm at night. Nick Crowly’s channel shows a few of these.

"I Feel Fantastic" was one of the first videos that my friend showed me on RUclips. This was maybe a year after it came out and I still will occasionally think of that creepy mannequin in that sad room, making a chill run down my spine.
Jumpscare videos scared me away from watching anything paranormal for several years. But later I found more and more channels I could trust, including yours
I enjoy mysterious paranormal things, not horror. This is mostly because I had my own paranormal experiences.
That first girl mirror one. That made me really shizzle my pants first time seeing that when it first came out. Better than what Hollywood can do these days. lol

Jeeze, those were the days when people really put in an effort to make ghost videos seem real instead of the same old, same old obviously faked ones we see now. And back before all this politicized censorship and everyone's offended by everything garbage we are stuck with today.

On #3 "I Feel Fantastic" the best part of the vid was left out, the singing. If you can call it singing. Don't know if the omission was due to proprietary rights, but it's too bad it was left out. The singing was damned eerie. If anyone wants to hear it for themselves just put "I Feel Fantastic" into the YT search engine. You'll get it. Sorry about it in advance. 😂

The scream in the 1st one really scared me. Ive only seen stills of it before so i thought it was a silent scream!! Really made me jump!!!! Sad for bergeron as it was not his dream but at least he gained some timeless fame.
I knew eventually someday you'd cover... The dining hall... To this day I can't watch that again. I was so young on Quizilla and unfortunately went down a rabbit hole and this was posted at the end of a random quiz. It of course scared and scarred me for life. As soon as you mentioned the title I had to skip forward lolol it's that bad for me...I can't and won't.
Yes! I often go back and watch older top 5 vids just from the classic spooky stuff, even if long debunked or explained they're still fun.

Just had a talk about this with someone the other day. The internet was way unregulated back in the day. On 4chan alone you could see absolute horrors and other illegal contents that just left you scarred. I do not even dare to speak about any of that stuff.
I never got to see any of these the first time round. I refused to have anything to do with the net, etc. Now I'm addicted to it the first two was quite scary

Does anyone remember that area 51 video called “breaching area 51” and those creepy old ladies who just drove accross the border ??? That used to seriously creep me out!
2 videos I found when I got the internet in 2005/2006 are gone,
One was silent it was a man adrift in a dinghy at sea seeming to be keeping a video diary for as long as he could, showing his supplies, the ocean around him, then after a few of these, he shows he has not had to use his supplies and looks happy, and alluding to something helping him, then he suggests by looking up it's a ufo, then he wraps up happily still with supplies, looking up, waves at the camera and jumps into the ocean and swims away leaving the camera going 🤔.
The second was a young man, between maybe 18 to 20 who lives on a property like a farm type property, he's showing people lights in they sky that had been appearing for a few night in a row, and he's not using a phone he's using a camera, you do see lights, then he decides to walk back to the house and he can see something near the fence line around the back of the property so he goes to, I guess night vision but not like night vision now, it was very clear and as he got closer he stopped in his tracks because this alien type creature was standing there just watching him, it made a weird noise and then moved into a position like it was going to jump at him, then turned and jumped the fence, and with one more jump it was gone, one massive jump! With the boy frozen, and the way this thing moved it really felt very real, I froze like that once when I came face to face through a kitchen window of a man known as the Brighton prowler in Hobart Tasmania, I've searched in every type of wording from short films to old fake videos to movie scenes to assuming they were real trying to find either of these videos. Others from the same time period have come up, but I've never been able to find those two again?🤔.
I remember that first one almost made me shit myself, although the bad editing with the face and scream was not in it when I saw it. Which kind of made it scarier in my opinion

I was reading ghostly books, bought in the new age/occult section of book stores, checked out them from libraries all as a kid. Scared me silly, was a bit hard to sleep at night. Then the internet came, & while I like these videos people send on RUclips, Tik Tok, etc, the bellief of ghosts just lessens for me. Reading stories from a book, yeah people can fake stories, make stuff up, but it was harder for me to not believe them from books. In videos, the technology we have now, anybody can fake anything and make it look authentic. As they say, looks can be deceiving. It was more fun reading about them, lost a bit of believing in them once this all hit, social media.

That video of the teenagers or young boys who were attacked via a masked man had me so traumatized for months, I was hoping that the video was ONLY just to gain views or audience attention.

The Stevenage video is more like “Cloverfield” than “Blair Witch”. Both are freaky, but Cloverfield started with an official Army logo and had spliced in bits from other recordings supposedly on the videotape.

I remember seeing a similer video about a girl trying to summon bloody mary.
Back during the "Wild West" days of RUclips when it was great and you didn't get demonitized over ridiculous BS.
Thus why i hate mirrors. Saw the movie mirrors and havent purchased one since the movie came out.

Yeah, Love these vids but, I`m as skeptical as hell and always pass these off as good editing, good CGI - twins (Like in the first) the odd jump scare is good - but take these with a grain of salt - all of them, there are a lot graduating from film school that want to test their knowledge and skills, the grudge was good, liked "No through road" - "I feel fantastic" kind of got me, "Dining room or there is nothing" was weird and why you never became a dancer was up there - its those ones that make you think that get me,,,
