A lot of people use Mokou as an example of how immortality is actually horrifying, but I feel like they're missing the point. Many, if not most Touhou characters are immortal to some degree or another, and Mokou is the ONLY one who hates being immortal. Everyone else either enjoys being immortal or doesn't care one way or the other - In fact, even Mokou herself appears to loosen up a bit in her later appearances. Perhaps now that she left her old life behind and began living in a world filled with immortals who enjoy their immortality, Mokou started to realize that she never really hated the idea of living forever... Just the idea of living forever ALONE.
Mokou is a human who became immortal. She's not a god or spirit, nor a hermit who wanted immortality. She drank an elixir during, probably, an incredibly emotional and not-at-all ration state of mind.
Being alone for your entire life/forever is actually really horrifying, you would have absolutely nobody to talk to for god knows how long, and that would make you go insane since you aren't just permanently unable form any new relationships, but you would never be able to receive information from others and it will only be your thoughts which will cling onto you forever. I'd personally want to die if I was in that situation.
That is correct, but unfortunately it has very little to do with my comment about Mokou or Mokou's life in general. Even before Mokou found Gensokyo and Kaguya she wasn't living in complete isolation from other people. What I meant by her having to live forever alone is that before she met Kaguya, she had no one who could form a permanent relationship with her because everyone else around her was only mortal bound to die within a few decades of meeting her, which is without a doubt traumatic, but not to the extent of what you're describing. And of course, now that Mokou lives in Gensokyo she doesn't have to suffer through this either because she has fellow immortals that she could potentially stay with forever (most notably Kaguya and Eirin), hence why her perspective had changed.
