    40lbs of torque, listen closely you'll hear my elbows click at 40lbs, fantastic! Loved that! Great information, will probably be ordering stuff soon.

    I like the trick of using the ratchet tie downs to compress the master cylinder and bleed the brakes... I bought a brake bleeder kit, but this is now my Plan B.

    Since I own a boat, I suppose I need to attend trailer maintenance school (actuators, drum/disc brakes, bearings, bunk boards, winch, jack, lights & tires); motor maintenance school (oil/filter changes, fuel filter/water separator changes, spark plug changing, steering/trim, adjusting shift cables + winterizing); outdrive maintenance school (gimbal bearings, bellows, impeller changing, gear oil, drive shaft & props), and in my spare time, I'll also go to welding school, fiberglass repair school, upholstery/sewing school, electrical engineering school & maybe I'll be able to squeeze in a dashboard gauge repair class. All at night after my day job, yeah . . . sign me up!
    All jokes aside, great video but probably above my limited diy skill level.

    Here's another tip we use in automotive industry when bleeding brakes. Use a vacuum pump connected to one bleader at a time to get the air out.
    Just don't let your actuator/master cylinder run out of brake fluid. Otherwise you 'll have to start all over again.

    Love the winch / ratchet idea, I bled mine with a crude lever setup using a piece of scrap lumber and the safety chain to actuate the master cylinder. It was exhausting.

    Appreciate the detailed videos. I usually bleed with a vacuum tank but like the ratchet strap idea as another way along with a good way to test while on still on blocks.

    Hi Ron, thanks for these videos. Currently tidying up our new boat & trailer and your tips are very helpful. Our Australian trailer setups are quite different around the hitch, but otherwise the principals are the same.

    Cool, I was wondering how to bleed my boat trailer brakes.

  • @AutoMotivatedTV
    @AutoMotivatedTV 3 года назад

    You can pump that cylinder with a 2x4 - one end wedged on the ground; push the top toward the boat bow with the center of the 2x4 pushing the tongue in - much easier to "pump" the cylinder

    My trailer has this exact same looking master cylinder but my cover that covers the fluid fill port is just a thin plastic cover not a "lock out". Why do I not have a lock out for when I back up? Thanks for this detailed video and the strap trick is the best.

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  Год назад

      The thin plastic cap/cover is standard, the aluminum lock-out cap is optional & we do have them. The lock out method for the std set-up is a removable "key" that is placed on the side blocking movement of the forward pin...not very handy to use.

    screw drive to move actuator and bleed the longest line first.

    I bought an older 4-wheel boat trailer which has brakes on the 2 rear wheels only. Is this normal or has it possibly had brakes removed from the 2 front wheels? Decals say it is a Ti Trailer. I think made in San Marcos, Ca.. Thanks!

    can you swap them out for disc brakes?

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  3 года назад

      Yes you would need to change the drums to discs, and replace the actuator from a drum to disk actuator

  • @agoodsheperd880
    @agoodsheperd880 10 месяцев назад

    I had one brake lock up, and white smoke poured out. The drum looks a bit discolored, the shoes still have a lot of meat on them but have a black stripe down the shoes. Does this warrant new drums and/or shoes? Thanks in advance.

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  10 месяцев назад

      Not necessarily, auto/truck applications never paint the drums, marine applications typically do paint the drums, this is where your smoke may have come from. If the bearings & spindle are good next is the run-out of the drum, in other words is it still round or egg shaped, if still round you are good to go, if not replace the drum, not sure about the black stripe in the shoes, would need a pic of that to see what it is , but I doubt it is serious.

    Hey Ron "if i convert my Hydraulic drum brakes to a disc type hydraulic rotor version. Wil the Attwood hydraulic Actuator work for this conversion?. I have the Attwood Actuator that is welded on my trailer.

  • @goodboyringo9716
    @goodboyringo9716 3 года назад

    I was shocked to see the drum says MADE IN THE USA
    I would open the bleeder and let fluid fill the wheel cylinder , once fluid drips out then began to pump it up to bleed.

    Did you have to bench bleed the master cylinder? Or did I miss that?

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  2 года назад +1

      No, we don't bench bleed these, install, connect all the lines then bleed the system, then pressurize & test for leaks.

      @@rontanis1024 thank you for your quick response. I watched part one and two. Can't seem to get the air out of the lines because it's air and not fluid it doesn't compress the same. I have the tongue of the trailer down below the level of the wheel cylinders I am going to try to take the line off the wheel cylinder and crack it at the bottom by the master cylinder and gravity-feed some fluid in there try it again see what happens thank you for all your help

      PS mechanic for 25 years computer tech for 25 years. So I guess not call Master cylinder that's why they called actuators cuz they actually work a little different than the master cylinder in a car
