      Just goes to show that movesets shape perceptions of stats, and that a damage stat itself is not the only thing to consider. There are very few good grass and poison type physical moves and Amoongus only gets access to seed bomb. Talonflame gets STAB Brave Bird and Flare Blitz, so it does more damage with its STAB moves despite the lower attack stat.

    I think a very similar mon that shared a similar role was Crobat. Fast U turn, nice quad resistance to U turn itself, Toxic and Roost along with Heavy Duty boots allowed it to be a offensive defensive pokemon suitable on balance teams. It was also immune to toxic itself, so stall could not chip it so easily.

    • @N12015
      @N12015 Год назад +9

      And a reason why Talonflame was NU in gen 8. Why would you use Talonflame when Crobat is faster, stronger, bulkier, and is toxic immune? There's oddly enough reasons, mostly to deal with Lucario and Metagross, while Will-o-wisp is a valuable move which makes it better on the physical side, but otherwise you're using a worse Crobat and therefore it was quite niche.

    • @Gold-Dango
      @Gold-Dango Год назад +4

      @@N12015 Ye that's prob the reason, and also Crobat is not as weak to Knock off than Talon as even if Crobat lost 25% hp it can still come in moves like Close Combat, Earthquake, U turn and Toxic to say a few.

    • @anusthing
      @anusthing Год назад +5

      @@thundergamespt99 we need a respectful discussion about why offensive pokemon get banned more than defensive pokemon.
      The end-game of a pokemon battle is to faint your opponent's team. While it is possible and it does happen that a defensive pokemon just sits and walls your opponent to death, they don't pose the same immediate threat as they often require support to outlast your opponent. For example, while Cresselia is super annoying and most people hate it, Cresselia needs other teammates to win a match. You need something to take out dark types, you need something that can remove status or heal status, you need something to trap steel types, etc. Whereas an oppressive offensive pokemon, like Chien-Pao for example, doesn't necessarily need support. It can set up a swords dance and wreck half your opponent's team, and then you have 5 other team mates left. Pokemon like Chien-Pao, Chi-Yu, Palaffin, and the like require very little support and rarely have any real answers. Even unaware mons, some of the only defensive answers to these types of pokemon, get worn down from the sheer power they have. Whereas defensive pokemon like Deoxys D, Toxapex, and Clefable (which have either been banned or have had calls to ban them) have a number of possible answers to them, including magic bounce, taunt, tricking a choice item, substitute, etc. There are just more ways to deal with defensive mons than offensive mons.
      TL;DR it's just much easier to steamroll another team with an offensive mon than a defensive mon, which makes them uncompetitive because they don't have many answers.

    My favourite pokémon in gen 9 uu is salamence, due to it being a very unpredictable pokemon.
    It has a very powerful special wallbreaking set with considerable longevity and a dragon dance set that can easily take over a game.
    The only problem is that both of these sets are extremely unreliable, with the wallbreaker's best stab option being the awful hurricane and the dragon dance sweeper being hard to find an opening for.
    Im a big fan of a choice band set which can lure in opponents that expect hurricane or draco meteor before slamming them with an outrage or earthquake.
    It is not the best, due to being stealth rock weak, but with support with fellow bird type talonflame, it can create openings for mence with U-turns, taunts, burns and hazard removal.

    I had a dream about Iron Mugulis. I was hiking in the hills with my friends in an area we like with lots of switchbacks and small valleys. We rounded a hill, and I saw him on the trail ahead of us across the valley, staring at us. He didn't do anything at first, and I wasn't afraid because I was just dumbfounded at the situation. Then he raised his arms and started floating towards me across the gap. The closer he got, the harder it was to breathe, and a tinnitus ringing smothered my hearing. I couldn't move, and I couldn't break eye contact, even to blink. I woke up gasping for air. My eyes hurt, and the ringing noise lasted until I could breathe normally again. It's three hours before my alarm, but I'm too unsettled by the experience to go back to sleep.

    Btw, this UU set was also top tier in NU, but it wasn't RU for a simple reason: THE ELECTRIC TRIO. Gen 8 RU is defined by the ones of Raikou, Xurkitree and Toxtricity, all being highly regarded and you should expect to see one of them in each 2 games. Talonflame and Starmie do not like electric, which made them niche and therefore NU; also Crobat existed and was usually preferred due to better stats and typing.
    Talonflame is also oddly good in VGC due to the other priority tailwind setter being Murkrow. Also, this bird is EVEN USED IN OU; Stall teams exist BECAUSE Talonflame can defog against Gholdengo, while kingambit doesn't want to deal with this bird and great tusk isn't usually carrying something to hit it either. My favorite pokemon.
    Another nerf was the terrain, unfairly done, since the ones who abused them were the Tapus, not the rest of the pokemon.
    And now they give the user of Grassy Terrain a priority move with stab, and boosted with the terrain itself and with its maximum stat in attack, and sword dance.
    Logically it will be powerful, it has no coherence, if they nerfed poor Talonflame.
    I would like our beloved Smogon Bird to return. I miss him quite a bit.
    What do you think if a joint request was made, made by the fans to improve competitive things, return Genga levitate and Talonflame, and improve mechanics??

    Talonflame with Swoop Strike may be able to use Gale Wings again. While Tailwind can be set up first due to Gale Wings, Swoop Strike boosts Speed after doing damage, so Talonflame will once it takes damage, still be able to outspeed anything that lacks priority anyways.

    Aside from its glaring 4x Rock weakness, Fire/Flying is otherwise a good defensive type combination. 6 resistances and 1 immunity for only 3 weaknesses is honestly good. Heavy duty boots was a blessing.
    In a Rom hack I had to nerf a Fire/Flying type with Wonder Guard to the Psychic/Flying typing because it was just so damn overpowered.

    But I honestly enjoy either Corviknight or Talonflame since they're the 1st route birds that shed the Normal type for something unique and usable, not to downplay Staraptor or Guts Swellow. Also, who do you guys consider as the 1st bird of Paldea, Flamigo or Kilowattrel?
