Starter Replacement - How to Replace Starter on Toyota Pickup/Hilux 22R/22RE

- Once in a while my truck just makes a single click when I go to start it up. This is due to a dead spot in the starter where the contacts are worn. I’ve already cleaned the battery terminals and that helped a little bit. If I give the starter some taps with a hammer, sometimes it will start right up. That’s a sure sign that the starter’s going bad. Today I’ll show how to replace the starter on a Toyota Pickup truck and 4Runner with the 22r and 22re engine.

This is honestly a GREAT vid. Well narrated, video was easy to follow, the engine outside as display was great. Ending was funny as hell😂💀
Thanks! Lesson = sometimes you just need to hit it with a hammer to fix it!
The new starter not working once you get it installed is perfect. Haha! That is so something that would happen to me. Glad the hammer did the trick.
Yeah... I went from happy to pissed off to happy again pretty fast
It's nice that you had an engine sitting there to provide a better look at where the bolts are.
Yeah, it took out a lot of the guesswork in removing the upper nut
@@6thGearGarage True, you can see it, but making a video and showing folks is another story. My 2wd must be easier to access? I removed all the smog stuff and have an Offy intake, so that is probably why mine looks easier. Great work, and we love your videos. Jim and Tim
Classic symptom of bad starter solenoid contacts. I always just pull the cover off the solenoid and clean the contacts, they work great after that.
Late to the party here but could this also cause the starter to start sticking? I can hear mine continue to whir after the engine has started and it usually releases after ~5 seconds. Afraid it's gonna burn the thing out. May give this a shot before full on replacing
Thanks for the video. With your help, I replaced the starter motor in my 92 pickup. I had to do the same socket acrobatics you did, but it worked and my truck is back on the road.
Great to hear!!
First time I've seen an part replacement video end with the disappointment of the new part still not working properly 😂. I have it happen every now and then and I'm always thinking "I CANNOT be the only one this happens to".
Yeah I couldn't believe it worked when I tested it, but not after I put it in! Glad a few hammer taps got it working... it's been fine ever since. Weird...
Happens all the time. I think it's a racket.
It's always worth cleaning both sides of that ignition wire clip plug first. The metal contact blades can loosen up or the plastic plug or clip can be cracked. They can also be very dirty inside if you've ever had an oil leak. And heads up to anyone with air conditioning, it will be even harder to reach the mounting bolts from the front.
People need to take this tip from you about instructional videos. I was happy to learn more about doing the project, Than learning about WHAT happened to your truck and why and where an when an how. thank you for an awesome video down to the point.
Amazing video! Easy to follow and the video and verbiage were spot on!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
Worked like a charm truck was just clicking so 20 good hit with a hammer and away we go guess it's time for a new starter to carry around just in case
I actually had this issue but it was the relay. The relay was acually good but the connection from the battery had a wiring issue. I ran a 12 gauge wire from the relay to the battery and havent had issue since
my 91 toyota pickup did that a few months ago. i just changed the starter. it is easier than taking it apart to fix an bad connection issue
I’m gonna attempt a starter swap on my 91 Toyota pickup today, any pitfalls I should watch out for?
@@DavidArias2 don't cross thread the main connection. I almost did it since it's the hardest one to see after swapping the starter.
Common 6th Gear W 🔥🔥
6th gear,
Thanks for video, very helpful.
That top nut !
Saved me a lot of time, thanks!
I have replace a few starter on my 1986 bought 2WD truck. That top nut can be removed from atop the starter. Use a ratchet flex end box wrench as the swing area is tight. You can reach down to get to it. The nuts are only 29 ft/lbs torque. Might need a stool to stand on with a 4WD with big wheel like this one. Takes less than 30 minutes.
Thanks Dad, great videos of how to
Awesome! Would you like to review our welders? We have some really good welders you should like😄
I will have a look at your website and see what is available. What is the best way to contact you?
Helpful video 👍 thanks
Welcome 😊
My truck is doing the same thing. How hard should you hit it with a hammer. I don’t want to change the start of a hammer can get it running.
I'd start with easy taps and go from there. Don't hit it like you're hitting a nail into wood though.
Thanks bro, todo muy claro y específico, te agradezco!
The wires that are just sitting there have a clip that clips over the wire where the star ended plastic thingy is and the clip is attached to the bottom starter bolt, can be tricky to get it and bolt in and thats why its not there for your truck...someone said F it and left the wires hanging. Also you can get a Toyota remanufactured starter from Yota toyota parts...bit pricy at $125 but Im a OEM type if I can....
A hammer is a regular resident in my tool box, always.
So awesome!! Thank you
Is anyone else thinking, WTH did i get myself into? 😂
