How To: Toyota 22RE Starter Click NO START ISSUE FIX! (Pickup, 4Runner)

  • Fixing an intermittent starting issue I've been having with my 22RE. In this video I fix the no start issue by rewiring the starter relay. I also cleaned and sanded the contacts in the starter relay itself.
Lately my 1988 Toyota Pickup (probably affects my 4Runner too), has been having a no-start issue where the relay clicks and nothing happens. I started getting worried that this would eventually leave me stranded on a trail. I started digging deeper into the cause and apparently there's a wiring flaw on these early trucks and 4runners (1986 - 1988) which causes high current to pass through the contacts of the ignition switch. What happens is the solenoid doesn't get enough voltage. Luckily, someone else figured this out and all you have to do to fix it is run one of the relay wires to your battery positive (12V).

Great video and to the point. Not trying to be a d**k here but always stack your high current draw cables closest to the battery post. This ensures you won't burn your smaller ring terminals. Probably doesn't matter in this particular case; just best practice. I'll see myself out.

Hello. Thank you so much for putting this together in a video and for sharing it. I've got the exact same rig but with the dried blood red interior. "Wait!...There's been a slaughter here......." ....Anyway so I just spent all of yesterday rehabilitating the wiper linkage and splicing into the harness at the starter relay connection as you did. Truck started right up like new immediately after. Boy was I stoked. And then....this morning as I gleefully got out to head to my studio.....NOTHING. Like I'd done absolutely nothing the day prior. I turn the key, I hear the rapid clicking of the starter for a brief moment, then all lights go off. Then I wait.....I hear another click somewhere in the engine bay I think.....and then I can try again. Something is opening up to prevent contact....it's staying open for a while.....then it closes...having, I assume, nothing to do with the voltage issue for these model years ('88). If you or anyone can help me understand wtf is going on I'd be grateful. Btw I replaced the starter and solenoid brand new in about 2016 myself and the truck sat parked from that time until Dec 2020. So the starter has seen very little wear....maybe seen 10k miles total. The starter relay I found to be in great condition and that is not where the secondary click is coming from. This is beyond upsetting. Edit: my multimeter proved the exact same current measurements you found on your truck in this video.

if lights are turning off right after you tryin to start, then its a battery issue. im having same problem as guy in this vid currently and my dash lights stay on when trying to crank and I get the click noise. also my truck aint got it but some have a security feature build in that malfunctions and prevents start. might be worth lookin into

I'm going to try the tests that you've shown with your truck. I'm not that handy with the electrical systems. My question is...where do I find the wire with the 30amp fuse? I'd love to do this on my 2.4L 2wd Toyota Pickup, but I have no idea where to wire into. My starter relay is near the fuse box in the driver side kick panel of the cab, so I'm guessing I need to do it there? I also heard others talking about wiring the crank wire, but I don't know where that is either.

Yesterday AAA came because of clicking on my 85 Toy pu. He took out a 3ft iron bar, gave the starter a few wacks and she started! I had a long VW bus that had the clicking issue due to so much resistance on the wire. Put a relay next to engine that was wired to battery and starter ….and…..clicking ended! Magic.

Do you have any other advice if this fix did not work? I pulled out my original ND starter and replaced the copper contacts. Put it back together and then I followed your video and re wired the relay and I’m still just getting a click. Thanks in advance!

Has anyone done this on a 1994 dlx? The relay is inside the junction box above the wheel well, so not sure how to approach adding a wire like this. Thanks!

@@lindsey1537 I ended up swapping the starter with a re-manufactured one. Wasn't too difficult of a job and works perfectly now. I believe it was probably just the solenoid that was bad but to save time I just replaced the entire unit. I got a rebate for turning my old starter in as well...

Same with my 94. Just clicks added a old ford solenoid and keeps doing it every 1-2 weeks, give it a quick jump and and engine has issues starting. Nothing to do with the battery seems like it needs a lil more juice To start

Wasn’t the starter relay, but turned out to be an intermittent clutch switch issue. I have yet to fix that, but I can override with the clutch switch override button. Fires every time. Thank for the video!
