A lot of people say this relationship is toxic but...
1. Dean lied and cheated, tried to keep her in a narrow little world that suited him not her. Isn't that toxic?
2. Rio sees Beth for who she really is, both the light and dark aspects.
3. Rio doesn't treat her like a doll/a victim. He treats her like the strong woman she is
4. Beth is never more empowered and fierce as she is than when she is with Rio.
5. Rio obviously wants her body but he is absolutely turned on by her skills and brain.
6. There's definitely an aspect of mentor and student , and when she does well you can tell he is proud and doesn't feel emasculated by her growing confidence and independence.
Now, I totally get that the world he operates in is criminal, but is their relationship toxic? I'm not so sure.

So this is my theory:
1. RIO is not dead. The FBI guy gave him a choice & Rio took it to live.(b/c of his son)
2. The FBI guy told Beth he’s going on vacation w/ his boyfriend, but really he’s gonna start investigating Beth & the man who’s buried in her garden.
3. Rio to Beth: “You want to be the king, you gotta kill the king”. In season 1, Rio saw Beth’s potential & lowkey prepares her to take his position so he can start something else’s. (Remember how he talked about starting something new before the cops caught up, the dialogue at the park when the girls give him the cash in S1 I believe)
Edit: I was right!!! Lol Rio is not dead, but I'm gonna start a petition online if they don't give him more screen time. I haven't watched since S2, but will catch up soon. Ughhhh but when he does get screen time he really knows how to leave us on the edge wanting more. Props to Manny Montana for doing such an amazing job!
