I think the problem with Barbie is that while Mattel has ushered in this new era of Body Positivity for the Barbie and making them all shapes and sizes they've just as hastily stopped being Fashion dolls. So now instead of having the bigger curvier dolls join in on the fashion fantasy that Barbie used to entail all they get is these frumpy, a-line box dresses w/ garish prints. Which in turn makes them seem less appealing, which really sucks. Young kids/adults wanted Barbie to be more inclusive with her sizing because they wanted the different body types to be able to participate in that beautiful fashion lifestyle that their skinnier Barbie counterparts had. But now it's as if Mattel has considered it an even trade, as if they're not allowed to have both and I wish that wasn't so.

I agree I think they made concepts of the larger body kinda lame cause the fashion sucks. They took that fantasy away which make the dolls boring. They could have been really fab

You are on point. I personally love curvy Barbie because since I became a mom of 3 I moved from size 28/30 to size 32/34 and see myself in the Barbie Looks Elle. I just hate the flat foot curvy dolls as I personally love heels. And yeah I hate those A-line frocks/t-shirt dress.

I like the body options mattel offers, but the issues I have are clothes and shoes don't fit all body types - curvy, tall and petite bodies are difficult to find clothes for. Mainly, Curvy because the shoes are all flat tennis shoes with t shirt dresses with cheesy slangs' 😭

I personally find that most new MGA dolls always have a very healthy looking and naturally average bodies compared to what used to be the standard and now Mattel is also following but theirs sacrifice style for inclusivity and that's something I am less on board with...
I love the shape of the RH girls and the new ones are even curvier

I honestly think if you ask most adult women who played with Barbie as kids if their body image was shaped by their dolls, they’ll say no - it was the adults around them who made comments about “acceptable” and “sexy” bodies. And of course the attitudes of their peers. NOT Barbie or Bratz or other dolls. Having said that, I love Curvy Barbies (especially Looks) and tend to collect them the most!

I think I prefer the slim classic Barbie body, I really loved the model muse body. Having said that I really like to see other options and I think there are very beautiful fuller figured dolls and the petite body molds as well. It’s good to have choices and I think it’s smart of Mattel to be more inclusive. I think there is something great about having choices and it’s great to see someone who is body positive. Learning to love yourself no matter what size you are is a battle for a lot of people. Barbie will never take away her classic slimmer physique but it’s nice to know there are other shapes as well. Also I love some of the newer face molds and skin tones. I recently bought my first full figure Barbie, she’s the you can be anything scientist with blue hair, she’s really pretty. Great video and it great to see someone make an unbiased video not shaming anyone for their choices.

i have a history of anorexia that started in high school and ended in my late twenties.
As i approach 40, i still care about my weight, but i'm comfortable enough in my body where i no longer feel the need to starve myself for a week or punish myself at a gym.
    It's funny though.
My body dysmorphia had nothing to do with dolls. Instead, it was cultivated by actual humans and their destructive beauty standards.
i realized that it was dysmorphia when i saw old photos of myself and saw that there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with how i looked and that i will most likely look at my 39-year-old self 10 years from now and see the exact same thing!
No matter how badly you THINK you look now, trust me:
    YOU. ARE. FINE.
Do not buy what these corporations or what society tries to sell you.
    It's all bullshit.

@@dontcallmedoll Thank you for reading all of that.
i actually prefer Barbie's original "hour glass mannequin" shape. i'm not fat-phobic (people have been misusing the word "phobic" a LOT lately), but i prefer that my dolls look a certain way so that they can fit into the clothes that i like and look graceful in them.
At this point, i am so sick and tired of people pushing for their dolls to look more "realistic".
i just don't understand the obsession.
Barbie is not an actual woman, it's a doll. A brand!
As a child, i never heard of other kids complaining about their dolls in that way.
      It was always adults.
Now it's the kids from the 90s who seem to be complaining about the bodies of fashion dolls.
It says more about them than toy companies.
How weak-minded must a person be to base their self-esteem on a child's toy?

I don't mind the curvy Barbies, BUT, I would like them more if they had nicer fashions (& nice fashion packs), high-heeled feet, and better articulation. Their faces are soooo pretty, and they're dressed in potato sacks! I am a 'curvy' woman myself and have rebodied a lot of the new diverse-body Barbies - they just can't share clothes and shoes like the older ones could. Growing up with 80's Barbies, most could always share clothes and the fashions were always so fun & stylish. I miss that. Great video. 😊

Personally, I believe Mattel should continue having diverse body types because it gives children and collectors more opinions to shape our collections to what we want it to look like. This decision broaden their audience/consumer base. Personally, I like having as much diversity as possible in my collection because it makes each doll more individualized.
The problem is, Mattel, in particular, did not commit to clothes being fashionable for different body types for almost a decade now. But it doesn't mean we shouldn't have those body types on the market due to Mattel's lack of quality and focus on fashion.
Also, your statement around 9:12 seems less likely to me because curvy Barbie isn't the only body type being used. Unlike in the past when skinny dolls were the sole body type on the market.
Sorry for the long comment and I enjoy your video discussions~💜

Everyone collects for different reasons and everyone has different play patterns. I like diverse dolls because I like character. I like looking at different people and creating identities for them. I also love fashion but I like to dress the dolls in outfits I think the character would wear. I love different body types. I am weird I know. BTW. You are always adorable no matter what you weigh. Fun video as usual!

What I like about the curvy dolls is how they feel compared to the standard barbies. They feel more solid whereas the new standard Barbies feel very light and cheap. I don’t like the limited clothing for them and the T-shirt sacks and frumpy fashions.

I prefer a particular body shape for my dolls but I can appreciate other shapes and sizes. But they are dolls for MY enjoyment not anyone else and I pay for them so whatever I like is MY CHOICE and doesn't rely on anybody's approval. If I wanted to be told what I can and can't have I would have stayed 6yrs old.

I'm a big boy and I want to see a thicc daddy Ken (but not with chicken legs like they gave Hagrid). There was a startup company called Curvy Gurlz (now Plus Girls) and I was really hoping they'd make it big with their plus size dolls, but it's been over 3 years and they still haven't made it to production. I was excited for the curvy body, especially the MTM ones but it's so hard to style them with their bigger feet (which was def an unnecessary change) and the size of their breasts and derriers (the clothes slides off if its body conforming) all they can wear is sack dresses 😭

Yes Kami, put whatever you want in your mouth! It’s your mouth! 😂
I definitely understand the argument that doll bodies need adjusted measurements to account for fashions having bulky fabrics and seams.
I personally like when independent doll artists play with doll proportions and exaggerate certain features etc. because it makes the doll more interesting and more like a work of art. But I also understand that I’m a grown adult who can compartmentalize my views on what a doll is and what a human is. A doll is doll, a human is a human and neither the twain shall meet!

  • @perfumedelight66
    @perfumedelight66 9 месяцев назад +12

The main reasons I have for swapping curvy and tall bodies for standard ones is 1. Shoes aren’t standard amongst the body types, and there isn’t a lot of variety in the sizes that are available to these dolls. 2. There isn’t much variety in tall and curvy clothes. 3. There aren’t a ton of made to move body swaps that match the skin tone and body type of non articulated curvy/tall dolls.

  • @mikigross2323
    @mikigross2323 9 месяцев назад +4

I think it's a personal choice of what your favorite body is for Barbie. When I have liked a face/head on a "curvy" type body, I ditch her body and swap it for the regular size body. Having worked in the fashion industry I know that my attitude is probably influenced by some who I have worked with. But take a look at any fashion show video like Versace, Chanel, etc. They are very diverse ethnically and that is a very good thing but if they have 1 "curvy" model.. it's still very rare. And to close this comment I have 1 designer friend that said it loud and clear to me about a year ago. He said, "Fat is fat.. not going to happen on my watch!!" Again, I think it's a personal choice. I think it's great that there are now regular, tall, short, curvy dolls available for those who want them in their collection!! 😊❤

Great video. The fashion industry is definitely fatphobic with body dysmorphia and promotes eating disorders. Mattel is trying to be inclusive, which is wonderful. But as an adult collector and someone who worked in fashion, I prefer thin mannequins for clothing such as Integrity Toys. However, it’s wonderful that Barbie can encourage their child demographic to embrace diversity.

Ich do like the new bodies (thinking about to get some MH 3 bodies or nude dolls to restyle because of that). But it’s still for aesthetic because other than you I get bored fast and I love uniqueness and variation. And let’s be honest they are still far from realistic, perfectly shaped, tight curves that don’t move? But I don’t want it different because I want perfection, a beautiful fantasy. So I totally feel your point. I also thought about it might can make sense for children targeted dolls because they can’t draw this line?
Having an ED myself for years and there are so many factors but I think I can say common beauty standards are (to me) an issue since a big part of it comes from the wish to be loved. But I‘m also so tired of the whole debate and if someone asks: Yes my dolls are influencing my self immage, I really envy my Shadow High dolls for the green skin.

    • @myonstrauss
      @myonstrauss 2 месяца назад

Or spoken to whoever out there: Can we please stop to perceive people for their shape? It’s so harmful even with good intention. Aesthetic preferences are ok, just don’t throw it at other people, ok? And if a relationship (any kind) is based on that, well that’s not healthy. Better act it out with for example dolls to close the circle.

barbie and everyone should know by now who their target audience is hence why they cast the beautiful Margot Robbie to play barbie lets not play dumb majority of us are fighting with political correctness vs wanting "very beautiful dolls". Bimbo aesthetic is coming back in style and i personally think barbie should cater to all people. there are tons of women and men who have healthy relationships with their body playing with bimbo looking dolls. i understand some will say beauty is at the eye of the beholder but biology disagrees; i was at my healthiest when skinny so that speaks for its self.
EDIT: i also want to mention that i as a boy am more cinched at the waist than nowadays barbie and so are the women in my family so why don't we get represented in the body types? its hypocrisy.

I feel like for a collector how you collect and enjoy your dolls is completely up to you however if you’re a parent switching the heads off of the curvy Barbie’s onto the smaller Barbie’s I think that’s where we kind of get into a dangerous area. In your own space on your own social media it’s up to you if you’re pushing the thinner bodies onto the kids that’s an issue. For the children playing with them they are all just people and should be treated as such for a collector the dolls are what they want them to be for themselves

Now Mattel makes all the clothing lose so they can fit the Curvy dolls. The thin Barbies dresses look like potatoe sacks on them! In the 60s everyone was thin so Barbie s body was not an issue. Now people got fatter so it became a issue.

I love curvy dolls, and unlike you I love a mixed bag of shapes and forms on my shelf. I wish they did even curvier bodies and more even more diverse features like shorter legs or hicker arms for example. What matters to me is not the body but the general design of the dolls. I do some restyles but my collecting is also a lot about the dolls as they came first. So sizing of shoes, clothes etc don't matter as much to me.
I am older than you but with your age indeed, and mine, I think we grew in probably some of the most fatphobic times in the history of human kind... Not good at all.
I am just happy there is more diversity... At last....

I think the thicker dolls could have effects...like wanting a skinny waist but huge butt and hips like most dolls these days. however all body types are realistic and that doesn't mean people should worry about how it will effect body image . Because there will never be a perfect body to make everyone happy. we have skinny dolls we have thick dolls and if that triggers people then....people are worrying about the wrong things. it's a doll.

The problem with Mattel curvy bodies is they don't look very nice. OMG dolls curvy bodies are cute and sexy. Rainbow High are fine too, a bit curvy, just what is needed. I have 2 curvy Barbie Extra dolls and I don't think their bodies look good. I will not swap bodies, too complicated but I prefer Barbie to be slim. She is a fashion model after all! I also don't like dolls looking realistic. It does not interest me. And I think MH original skinny bodies were great for these dolls. They fit the design and style perfectly. They are not meant to represent reality.

I think we should be able to have the kinds of dolls we want. I love blond hair, blue eyed, skinny Barbies the most. I also love the beach feet barbies. Why are people so obsessed with having to be insanely in love with every aspect of themselves. I can be happy and laugh at myself since I have flaws. I don't care! I don't have to be madly in love with myself to be happy. Its my body and I'm happy about it. I love my skinny dolls and it has nothing to do with judging body shapes. They are dolls not people. Most of my friends have been over weight and I actually don't even notice much about it. I see them not their body size or flaws. People need to calm down about being madly in love with themselves and wanting to seeeeee themselves eveyrwhere at the same time. Oh look i spelled it wrong.. i actually have dyslexia and I don't care about that flaw.. its not a big deal.
