Use a paint roller for gluing. You can buy an 18" roller for this. Shaving seconds off a process is the key. I would also not do one at a time.
That illustration on the wall behind you is beautiful!
I make cutting boards as a retirement hobby. I have them in a few gift shops, but my best method for selling my boards is with my tent at craft shows and farmer’s markets. Customers like to buy a board directly from the maker. They also usually have a few questions like what glue do you use, the finish, and the wood species.
I just discovered y'all about a week ago. I really appreciate your openness and willingness to give advice to upcoming entrepreneurs. Now some of my old ideas have started getting revived! You guys rock!
You guys are my favorite on youtube. I recently got into making cornhole boards and want to expand to shelving, cutting boards and charcuterie boards. The one thing I can do right now is clean out my garage. Like you guys it doubles as my workspace and storage for the kids stuff. I have stuff i havent used in years in there. I need the room. I am still starting up and need many tools, that will make my work faster. Kinda just getting by right now.
At first I thought this was an old video, but I checked the date and also just watched and got it. By the first 3 minutes I was right there with you. The ending comments were so spot on for everyone, not just woodworkers or entrepreneurs. You two Rock!
I love your energy and enthusiasm. Safety should always be your first priority. When you get tired, or the work gets monotonous you're the most vulnerable. Install some guards on that table saw sled.
Just found you two today, great stuff. Will be joining your community. Keep up the great work and advice!
Y'all are great. I just bought some new tools and am going to get started on some projects when they come in. I'm excited to get up and running--thanks for the encouragement!
You guys are salt of the earth and just what I need, when I need it!
Well timed - this is exactly where I’m at right now and have just started the same approach as you took...let me just do this one thing at a time and figure it out as I go!
I agree just do it and learn from mistakes. Your.own lessons are the ones you will learn from the most.
Perfection is the enemy of good enough - Live with good enough
Yes, I hear you guys! I took my private pilot lessons in 1996. Now I'm 45 and we have 4 kids. I want to get back into aviation so bad. So that's why I've decided to jump back into my shop and everything I make strictly goes torwards that goal of purchasing my plane, not a rental!
All good things! The promo video turned out wonderful as well. the transitions and background sound effects were smooth!!
Thank you! Hoping to do it even better next time.
I built my first electric guitar. It took me 3 years to do due to the product and tool expenses. My first guitar was vaguely designed like another guitar I have. My biggest helper now, is that I'll be able to make templates from my original build and I've learned an enormous amount. You're right! You can't improve on something you've never done. According to my son-in-law who works at a guitar store, I'll be able to sell my guitars for an average of $3000 each. You guys are an inspiration. Keep it up.
Awesome video. That being said, I have this same problem. Everyone is their own worst critic. So, when you think it's not good enough, trust me, it's perfect. With everything, one always tries to improve. You have both done plenty of improving over the years!! I've been into small woodworking projects for many years, and finally looking to take it farther next year. I've been following you for some time now and want to thank you both for your creativity, trials and errors and willingness to help people like me. Keep up the outstanding work!!
My one thing is making jigs that help make processes repeatable and safer! I make small pieces that I need to run through the router table so I used my 3D printer to create a jig to hold the wood safely!
As I head toward 76, and with Covid-19 raging, my one thing on my bucket list is: Don't kick it.
I can relate. 73
Hahahahahaha
Stick with one species of wood. You know how it works, how it acts, and how to finish it. I say that mainly after having harvested a 325 year old white oak - that's a lot of wood...
But I can look at a rough sawn piece and read the figure, I have a good idea if it's going to bind in the saw etc.
Also find a good sawyer. You can buy rough stock for a fraction of what S4S costs.
Get back into flying for sure! I just did my first solo today! Y’all got this!!!
Congrats! Definitely a day you'll remember forever.
The number one rule in starting any business is not to enter into a market that is already saturated. There are 331,000 hits on Google when you type in cutting boards. Market saturation exists in a given industry when the available supply of goods equals or falls short of customer demand. A variety of factors, including more competition, lower market need and obsolescence, contribute to saturated conditions. The big drawback of operating in a saturated market is that it limits your profitability and growth potential. Like your web site! Offering personal lazer engraving is a plus. Great start and good luck!
Jennie and Davis.....a tremendous video!! Love the openness on your “stumbling” forward!! You guys are doing great things!!
I see some improvements you could make in your workshop!! First I saw that you were using a brush to apply theglue you should use a mini roller lotsa quicker
Great advice, I appreciate all of the time you guys put into making these kinds of videos
One thing that I do to supplement my income is that I box up my hardwood scraps. I advertise them on Craigslist as kindling for people who heat with wood. It’s gotten to where I just email a list of a few people who are regulars.
Great video and sage advice.
Jennie and Davis, Glue up longer boards to make your cutting boards then cut your individual boards from that stock. It is faster to joint, plane, sand, and glue longer stock. Read up on continuous improvement methods from lean six sigma.
Tried that - too much material waste. 20% lower yield at the end of a batch. The time savings aren't worth the product loss.
I got overwhelmed just building 4 Adirondack chairs for personal use lol keep up the great videos and work!
Good luck in everything you do
Great advice, as always. I really liked the promo video btw.
Glad you liked it!
Did you put together the end grain island yourself? If so, how much material did you use to complete it and at what cost?
This is awesome, thanks for posting! I sell woodworking on the side and my wife has a postpartum business so this was helpful for both is us. Where do you get your custom boxes?
Was hoping for an answer to that question.
???
Just FYI I idolize you two. Keep doing what your doing👍
Can you eat a whole cake with one bite? no - ok, cut it into 12 pieces - can you eat one piece in one bite? no - ok, take a fork and take small bites- after a while the piece will disapear - if you stick to it, it will take a few days until the cake is gone! This is how business works - take small bites, but never forget your final goal. It might take a while, but finally you will get there. Be patient! Do not let other people push you - go your own pace. Do your book-keeping, pay your taxes on time! Where did you live in North Dakota? I was a foreign exchange student with AFS in 1971/72 in Enderlin - Ransom County - ND. I loved it and it changed my life. Now, I am an old geezer and love the posibilities the internet gives young people. I wish you all the best! Have a Merry Christmas - love from Germany.
North Dakota! Watching from Hankinson (ND)! Wow! I've been enjoying your videos. I've been "making sawdust" for years (lots of cutting boards). I'll send you some notes on your website from "Lake Elsie Designs" So impressed!
I'm a perfectionist and this is a huge issue for me. I'm trying to start my own leather and woodworking business, but I always nit pick my products. Every time I make a wallet I always think, hmm, this could be better, and yes it could, but for my experience and what the client wants its fine. They won't notice it is 1mm bigger then I wanted, or does it look handmade or custom enough. I recently made a wallet for my brother-in-law in a died leather and it died too perfectly that I was afraid it wouldn't look unique enough, I literally was mad that it dyed flawlessly with no character. I love using natural materials for their character, but that also can be the reason it won't always look exactly how you pictured.
Yes! This. Exactly. We've had so many conversations just like this with each other. Have you considered joining the Stud Stack? I think they guys and girls in there could really learn from your experience.... Check the link in the description box of this video if you're interested.
Everyone and their mother is doing these business's. Key to a successful shop today is MARKETING. Anyone out there thinking they can mimic these "successful youtubers" needs to first see if they can sell themselves. Learning the woodworking techniques is easy. Selling yourself can make or break a startup.
Loving the presentation with the boxing
The problem with any focus on cutting boards is that they're quite the commodity. I mean the first project you do in high school is a cutting board. So if a high school kid can do it, then you need to differentiate yourselves from that level. You can say, yes your quality is better and hopefully that's true you have the experience, but does it still draw someone to pay maybe $100 for a board?
Also, one thing I might try is mill your own lumber. Especially if the buyer would provide it. A special log from the local property or something. This could help be a differentiator in your product.
There are 8 billion potential customers out there. Thinking like this will lead to nothing but disappointment. Sales from a small business are more about relationship and networking than supply/demand.
I am also starting up a woodworking business to fund building an airplane. Good to hear there are others like me. What model do you want to build?
This a very nice video, I love you guys already. I am from South Africa, I also do woodwork as a hobby. I want to give your guys a good idea. Take wine barrels, take them apart and use 4 curve sides at a time, laminate them and make fruit buckets. That oak looks so awsome, and you can make a killing.
Were do you purchase the wood you use in your projects? Do you pay wholesale or retail. My problem is the wood in my area is expensive resulting in anything I build to cost more than a commerical version.
You’re competing when you don’t need to - Find customers who don’t want a commercial version. High-end clients, realtors, etc. Price high and move forward! Don’t waste your time trying to take money from poor people.
Carpenter for 37 years and firefighter for almost 25. Absolutely endorse how you two work together. A few things to help with your productivity if you're interested. As for your business plan I have 0 input. What you are attempting to do makes me want to help.
Over planning leads to "analysis paralysis". Just gotta do it!
Yep!!
You beat me to it Bruce. Analysis Paralysis is the downfall of many.
Or overthinking things more or less.
Hang on while I overthink that one for a few months, Bruce 😬
Don't forget the meetings and the meetings about planning meetings...:
You (almost) picked the right title for your video.
I have a question about wood staining with oil. Can I do this in my garage in Minnesota where the weather will be about 20 degrees or so in my garage? What do you think? I'm not feeling good about doing my work in the garage and then moving my piece to the house basement for staining. Just worried about flammability.
My "One Thing" continues to remain having a shop that I actually WANT to be in, and that means putting Air Conditioning in my garage... I've been talking about that for it seems like forever and now I'm closer now than I have been to achieving it... I'm putting in writing that 2020 was the last summer I spent in an unregulated garage.
Lou! Let me tell you my friend, you will be so mad at yourself for not doing it sooner. I’m in Texas and it’s life changing.
California here. Hotter than hell in the garage. We have the same goal.
I’m in north Jersey...you guys are making me feel bad for complaining how hot it is here in the summer lol.
The humidity is the worst.
I put a little window ac unit in and it works great.
I miss Tx and So. Cal.
Three plus one to that make things better no matter what it is. One plan, two rethink plan, three try plan and the plus one start back at one. = continuous improvement.
Great video guys, thanks for sharing.
Hey guys. Love the video! I know it’s hard working out of a garage, but if you ever want to get away and work in a bigger shop with some bigger tools just give me a shout. Would live to have y’all out. I’m right outside of Houston.
Shipping and order logistics... I'm dyslexic and I need a foolproof way to make sure it's flawless
You guys are inspiring! 👍🏼
You young people have the world by the tail!
What can you do to max shop time, margins, your avail time and lower your inventory exposure? The products you decide to produce is offered by? For what price? To whom? Now you've figured what you can do to max margins, low inventory and you can deliver it easily. Stock is made cause that's what you do... Plan your holiday on a 12 month bassi. Determine what your market will want after you make a sale? New producvt line...aha moment. Good luck.
For me it is having to many plates spinning at one time!
You guys should look into humanscale freedom office chairs, they're amazing.
Can you guys make a video of how you package and design your boxes?
Check last week's video!
Have you had any issues with the harbor freight dust collector, how is the noise level, is it comparable to others. What size is the powertech dust bag?
Thanks,
Mike
This is in regards to your shop tour video.
I hope you don't mind if I say something. Great table really awesome. But if you are going for high end of market tiny flaws should noticed and put right. I am known as false finder with my friends. Just check it and I may be wrong but from the photo I took of your table, one of the oblique piece [sorry English is not my first language] does show mm gap where fixed to the bottom piece. My apology if it was a shadow but I doubt it. and good luck
My one thing... shipping and packaging! Bogged down by this; best packaging and estimating shipping cost.
you could think about adding a internal bevel to catch meat juice!
8:25 pretty sure that's what Curly was trying to tell Mitch in City Slickers!!! Great video as always guys, you two always keep me motivated!
Great video as always, thank you guys for sharing :)
For me, it is setting one length I need for a project and then cutting all the parts that need to be this length all at once, so I don't have to adjust everything for every part. For example if the legs need to be 50 cm a so do the side panels, I will just set 50 cm on my saw and cut the legs and side panels. It isn't much, but it helps :)
I am just starting my little business and your videos are of great help :) Thanks
You'll love the Stud Stack... Ask The Woodworking Pelican on Instagram about it - tell him we sent you!
Make.
That’s the one thing.
The rest falls into place.
Well done!
This video is invaluable. Thank you!
Affiliate link to your company’s shipping boxes?
By the inch it's a cinch. By the yard its hard.
Love this advice. So true. Also, love that you have a MMX poster on the wall 😊
We believe!
Great advice! I know that is something that Chris over at @sidehustleschool podcast says and it rings true for me in both our side hustle @bcfunkyjunk and in my day job. Your boxes and kinda killer! They look custom where did you get those made?
Funny you mentioned that book. I just started reading it the other day.
Are you guys full time. Is that what I heard. Congrats and thank you for your service.
Problem solving is incremental. One thing lead to another.
Awesome video! I think my one thing was that I was limited on what I could get orders for because I hadn’t made much besides cutting boards, so people would ask, can you build this, and I said yes but I had nothing to show them or myself that I actually could. So I built a dining table and I might sell it, or keep it, but mainly I wanted to do it to show that I could in fact build large furniture and have pictures to show other people I could as well.
This is me currently! I know I need to make some furniture just so I can say 'this is what I can do' but i keep getting too many orders for the same thing over and over again which as much as its a nice little earner just isnt really where I want to end up. i literally have a house full of rooms needing me to build 1 or 2 items for it from beds and side tables to dining tables and chairs and everything inbetween but no time
@@chunkytfg can I ask what that “thing” is that you keep getting requested for?
I hear you on time. Have an almost 1 year old and she’s...always on lol
Thanks!
Maybe keep it for future people that would like to see what you’ve done...but if you sell it, take a ton of professional style pictures.
Best of luck bud!
:)
After 15 years of running a somewhat part time successful woodworking business, I have a strong feeling that there is a LOT MORE money to be made making videos and being paid by your advertisers! hummm maybe I need to do more videos and less woodworking????
Can you link me the laser engraver you guys have? I’m looking to get one and know nothing about it. Just started researching them and seen it in your video
Winning the lottery jackpot 🤗🤑
OMG... I have that same glass bowl lol
What's the dimensions on that cutting board?
Great video as usual. Wondering, what company you guys use for your website?
WiX (not sponsored) for its ease-of-use and customer support. When we hand it over to an employee it will be stupid easy for them to use.
@@jennieanddavis thank you for quick reply. I agree. Simple is better. Keep up the good work. I am from San Antonio, TX,. Looking forward to see you guys in person one of those days. Blessings
Just starting my RUclips, im in the surrounding Houston area as well. Any tips??
You guys I do believe you are being too hard on yourselves. I've already bought on of the cutting boards because I think they are beautiful and it will have my name on it. What more could you ask for. A great product from good people.
Thank you, Edna! It should arrive very soon - we're excited for you to open it
@@jennieanddavis me too going in my new house
Love your content! Are you two open to being interview guests (I wanted to reach out directly however there is unfortunately no business email set within your youtube platform).
What kind of airplane do you want to build? What ratings do you guys hold?
Finally getting myself together and make my Facebook page and my online presence
Yes! Gotta have a place customers can go!
Where did you guys end up ordering your boxes from?
My wife and i love your channel. We really liked the packaging. Where would one go to get something like this?
Thank you so much! Here's a link to our current sales page: www.samaratableco.com/product-page/personalized-cutting-board
Honey!!! They actually replied thats soo cool. Hahaha thank you sooo much. You guys are awesome 👌
Oh stop self doubting. You don't have to shout 'you are the greatest' but please give some uplifting feeling to yourself and to us eagerly waiting for your success- please you convey the same message with upbeat tone. Good luck. You are sunny couple show us...
How much do you charge for cutting boards
Find the thing you do the best and refine the process until you can make it repeatable to increase the throughput.
There are ONLY two ways you can do something: 1) figure out how to do it, then DO it! 2) just do it, then figure out HOW you did it afterward. Period.
How did you guys figure out packaging??
Watch our video on packaging!
Jennie looks like the girl from "Full House" nice cutting boards btw.
Making cutting boards? Viewers should be careful about what is actually being sold here. There is an endless supply of cutting boards from all over the world where material is cheap and workers earn a couple dollars a day. In order to make money making cutting boards in the US what a person needs is incredibly good marketing. More time spent on marketing than woodworking. Very few people have this ability. It is a very different business than making custom high end furniture where the product is your skill, the wood and design. A lot of people see simple things being sold and think they can make that thing and sell it. But it's not the thing, it's the marketing. Anyone making and selling cutting boards successfully can make and sell virtually anything. Most people able to do this quickly realize, as volume increases, that they can make much more money having their product made offshore because it's their marketing earning the money.
This is exactly what’s taught on our channel. Please do a little more research before blasting a wall of text on a random video.
@@jennieanddavis I blast as I please. My comment wasn't even negative. You are obviously very good marketers. But yeah, I can see why you wouldn't tolerate any opinion other than your own. You have people to convince here. I'll let you get back to your job.
"Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without." or my favorite..."Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good"
Also...you guys appear to have learned the key to solving large complex problems. Break it up into smaller, simpler tasks. Glad to see things are working out. :D Cheers from Tennessee.
You missed the perfect opportunity for a pun as a follow up to “don’t try to eat the whole elephant at once”
Focus on the “tusk” at hand 😁
Don’t block me 😅
try outsourcing some of that stuff; for example, you are not photographers and you will find some pretty talented folks at fiverr for great rates doing great stuff.
Thanks for sharing you have a blessed day
Thanks! You too!
Another good book, short , quick but inspiring for how to think about things when they don’t go as planned would be “Who Moved My Cheese”. Check it out.
Yo, loving the Wintergatan poster!
We believe!
