  • First time gun buyers looking for a revolver will often ask what Rodney recommends. His recommendation may come as a surprise.
The Ruger LCR chambered in .327 Federal Magnum offers the best of accuracy and firepower with the option to fire various calibers such as the .32 Short, .32 Long, .32 H&R Magnum, and the .32 ACP in addition to the .327 Federal Magnum.

Great round. I'm glad that I hand load it, because practice ammo is expensive and hard to find. The recoil in the LCR with full-power loads like 100 grain Gold Dots is quite stout though. Great pocket pistol, though.

I kinda like the 327 too. I have already got several guns for when I'm geriatric. I guess a lot of guns don't get shot, but at my house they do. I bought a Colt SAA that was unfired. That lasted about 5 minutes after I got home. I bought a really nice Colt 1911 commemorative. It came with the wooden display case and all. I figured it wouldn't run well. I was wrong. It runs great.

With the possible exception of big game the 32 caliber family is a very flexible and capable class.
It seems to me that the biggest impediment is the lack of service size guns especially for a reasonable price. I can go out tomorrow and get a serviceable 38 for a few hundred dollars. Not so much in the 32s.

I remember being so excited for the 327FedMag back in 09 when it was new but there weren't many guns chambered for it & the ammo was never in stock anywhere even to this day it's hard to find & still not that many guns for it. It's unfortunate this caliber went into obscurity in just a few years.

Good video. Many many people, myself included, start off under the false impression that .38 Special has minimal recoil. What they all fail to realize is that that applies to MEDIUM-SIZED revolvers. NOT the typical small, lightweight revolvers most people shoot and carry in .38 Special.
The versatility of .327 Federal Magnum is that you can tailor it to your needs. With .357 Magnum, you just get that and .38 Special. With .32, you can fire .32 S&W Long for very low recoil, step all the way up to .327 Federal for maximum power, or go with .32 H&R for a nice in-between.

Just recently picked up a Taurus 327. Fires the 327 Fed Mag, and uses all the holsters of the 605 357 Mag, so there is plenty of support. Also uses the speed loaders for the Ruger SP101 32 caliber. Recoil is reasonable for the power displayed, and really accurate at snub nose ranges. And pretty light in an Alien holster.

On a side note, turdy two is over 125 years old, some of the old ones are not smokeless safe but are lighter and more pocketable than anything today except those NAA 22s. Do the research and enjoy them.

I've done a bit of research on this myself. I found that in the snub nose revolver class the 327 Fed Mag just has no peers. It just doesn't! I believe the cost and the availability of the ammo has really hampered it. It's really a shame.

I have an LCR for about 4 years, is fun to shoot and very good as a defense weapon. Recently I got an SP-101 and is even better. As most has mentioned the issue is ammo price. In my case I can find .32 long in a couple of gun shops in may area. The .327 is usually available at the store I got my LCR. So Availability is not an issue, cost is.
About the weapon itself is just really versatile. The .32 short is really good for beginners, it has no recoil at all. The .32 long is great for regular practice and very close quarter defense. The HR is a real good option for defense with very low recoil. No need to talk about the .327, let just say that is more powerful than the 9 mm.

One major issue with .327 for new and inexperienced gun owners is ammo availability. I live in a very large city with real gun stores and box stores that stock a variety of ammo; you would have very difficult finding any of the ammo, with the *occasional exception* of .32ACP. How many new newbies are going to want to search the internet for ammo? A few yes, many no. Edit: Moon clips for newbies? No.

.327Mag is a great low recoil magnum defense round and can shoot a wide range of .32 caliber ammo in addition to the .327Mag. The problem is the availability and price. I can get .38Spl. anywhere at any time in a wide range of ammo types and at more affordable prices. Not .327Mag. .38Spl. does not have bad recoil. More than .327Mag yes but also heavier bullets than .327Mag but its recoil is not that bad. If folks can't shoot .38Spl. then they can't shoot 9mm. The recoil of .38Spl. is actually a little less than 9mm but usually not that noticeable. Folks need to buck up and learn to control recoil instead of complaining about it. If folks that buy guns don't shoot them then that is the problem. No practice and no training on the gun that they have a responsibility as a gun owner to have. I have no pity on them because they put no effort into the gun and they will get nothing out of the gun. If they have a disability then there are ways to either strengthen and brace that disability or use tools better designed for that disability including guns. I have seen plenty of folks at the gun range with disabilities but they have worked around it and overcome it and not let it stop them.

evreryone should start wit airsoft, after a few thousand rds of airsoft, at 1/c each in your bac yard, as vs 20c each 9mm, you'll have savied enough to pa for both the airsoft and a 22. Then the 15c per shot saved by the 22 buys the 9mm and the reloading casting equipment. Then the savings of 10x per shot reloads,, and selling cast bullets pays for the 9mm revolver and all of the ammo you shoot thru it. You get to train people with all of the above, paying for your hunts wiith pistols and future 22 and 9mm reloading components.
