Owned 2 7X7Rs. Beautiful handling. Confidence inspiring. Forget trying to make any significant weight savings. You'll have to redesign the frame and engine to achieve that. The front bias is what gives it the confidence, not the total weight. Lengthening the swingarm will f#ck up the handling, making it a dog. Forget weight, and spend the money on shock, forks and brakes.
Race the last gen back in the day your correct we shortened the swingarm and raised the rear ride higher made steer faster into corners like it was on rails seeing this video makes me miss thoses old war pigs
Am I the only one who is still absolutely in love with the old ZX7R? I remember when these were still brand new and it was my favorite bike (well, it and the CBR900RR after they ditched the round headlights) and now here we are in 2023 with the ZX7R still tickling me nethers despite all the incredible (and far superior) bikes we have nowadays. I know even at the time the 7R was lambasted for being a fat pig of a 750cc sport bike but I simply don’t care. It’s still one of the sexiest bikes I’ve ever seen!
I fully agree with a comment you made, " it helps my brain". Working on my bikes takes me away from the other BS that spins around and around in my head sometimes....love the zx7 in green. Wish I never sold my 94' but hey we live and learn as we get older.
I did a complete resto + upgrades on my 2000 ZX12R a few years back. Your bike looks about the same as mine when I started, allot of cleaning and work, but now my ZX12R is show room quality
Get the parts ceracoated a very good coating and did it on my bike, they blast back to bare metal the put the coating on and bake it, had steel, aluminium and plastic parts done.
Nicely done my friend , been there a few times. A manual , some elbow grease and relax time for me . Just tearing into my Rc51, runs and ride’s awesome but can’t resist tearing her apart and shining. Keep us updated, enjoy!

I think you might be needing to refit those white plastic supports from the original aircleaner to the new replacement. The filter probably won't stay seated correctly without them.
I love the kind of resto-mods, with both classic and current upgrades. Top job, I'm so looking forward to seeing the ZX-7R back together! In terms of weight savings, I am a total sucker for Li-Ion batteries with 800gr versus ~4 kilos for the Gel YTX12
I always liked that 7R because when I started following bike racing, those were easiest to tell from the others and it wasn't because they were ugly. They had their own face and it was a nice one.
This is amazing, Your literally doing what I did 22 years ago. I had the Hindle, i had Harris offset yokes, Ohlins internal fork springs, 780cc big bore kit and race adjustable footrests then took it racing in 2003 and got a win at Darleymoor NGRR 🎉. I loved it. Beating 1000cc machines on this beast. I had 138bhp at the rear wheel and it turned in super quick.
If you can get the loom off, stick it in the dishwasher. Have done it many times on old pinball machines and they come out a treat. Gets into all the places you cant. Just be sure to dry it thoroughly which if you hang it up straight from the dishwasher the hot water will flash off. Don’t tell the mrs…

I vividly remember a test drive on a spanking new ZX-7RR after just receiving my license in 1996. Its looks intimidated me massively, legs all wobbly. Turned out it was a very forgiving ride. Much more docile then the Aprilia Mille I rode next, which tore the road apart and fancied wheelies in high speed corners. That bike frightened me.
One of the previous owners have done the ‘float bowl mod’ on your bike so you will be running smaller main jets and a revised float height as well, worth telling your carb man when he refurbs them.
Good to see you spannering, it's good for the soul, and the brain. I could be willing but, I think the new air filter should be oiled and have the plastic bits off the old one transferred to it.

Chris, the bike is down on power because: it needs a rebore, or hone and new rings, and or the valve seats are leaking. Recut seats with three angle cut, replace worn valves, also guides may be worn, resleeve. New seals. You will get your 120bhp back, plus a bit more for all the kit you put on it. Find some RR bits, carbs, cr box, If you want more. Thought there was a wisco 800cc piston kit. What are going to do with the spare one? Or should i just buy a zx r 900 E1.

The air filter was upside down metal mesh goes to the carbs fire wall. You will need the cage for the filter too. Remove the noise block from the right hand cylinder to loose weight for free. There is also a large sound deadening inside the clutch cover that can go.
Watching from New Zealand before I head off to work at Tasman Honda. Keep up the good effort mate! Always enjoy watching you videos. PS you should clean and re-fit the cage from the old air filter onto the new one. (at least the plastic part, you could remove the mesh for more air flow).

I replaced forks with zx6r ones and lightweight wheels, smaller rotors , new calipers etc..saved few kg from the front. You can replace subframes and gauges, but the weight is there from frame and engine configuration mainly. Impossible to have a real new feeling from the front end. The monoseat can also reduce some kg in the back. Fine with me anyway. I own a cbr900 96 and a rsvmille, but still prefer the ninja :)
Chris, the bolt on the chassis in which the lift is picking up the bike is not centered in regards to wheight distribution. In order to check wether the weight bias is up to the front or the back, you have to wheigh the bike standing on its wheels with a scale on each one. The front of the bike being too heavy on the lift tells you nothing about the balance of the bike. Im sure you know these basics. Anyways it's always good to shed some wheigh off of your bike

Hey Chris. Can I be your friends friend too? 😀 That is a cracking collection you getting together. Great news that you are willing to have a bash yourself. Whilst the Carbs etc are off, might be an idea to check/adjust valve clearances, as once you have rejetted the carbs for the new pipe and filter you get maximum smoothness. I reckon you should have a go at prepping and painting the swingarm also.
Just something to consider to get the process. Get a little power steam cleaner to help clean and refurbish the bike. Will also help take care of your other bikes as well. save you time money and just a all around good piece of kit for the garage.
looking like it should be a fun restomod, the plastic supports and oiling the filter is the only thing I'd say you need. I'd get the swing arm anodised and blasted as well given how much work you are putting in I do like the fact you are going for a period exhaust.
Please paint the fork lower ends black, looks so much better. When you get that pipe on check the sump clearance, I had a full Akra system on mine and found the spring hooks wearing a hole in the soft aluminium sump, luckily I noticed it before it wore through. Ultrasonic cleaning of the jets helps, as does new carb O-rings, although a blast down the motorway seemed to have a similar effect on mine. Good luck with it, lots of good advice on the ZX7R forums, etc.
Just a friendly comment about exhaust. The std units are damn complex, tried a full 4-1 muzzy factory with dynojet kit. Never got it to run even ok between 3-9krpm. Ended up taking it off and installing std system. Evidently, you need to have fancy jet/needles ex from factory kit to make muzzy system work. I would never by a zx7, to tired motor, but would love to have the zx9r one in a zx7 chassie, which is just bloody beutifull!
I never achieved the heady heights of a ZXR……I had a brand new off the showroom floor KR1S in 1991……£3400 back then…..the best / fastest production 250 2 stroke ever, yes I ended up racing it, but for 14 months , it was Green heaven …….always been a Team Green fan ever since 👍👌🇮🇲. Ps never got a win…I have two 2nd place trophies from my road racing though 👌
You can never go too far… 2021 I started changing my chain and sprockets on my k1 600… around £900 later it’s had a full overhaul, change of bearings, forks/shock rebuilt, powder coat etc… this winter the engine might get an overhaul too😅🤣 safe to say I can’t ever sell it now😊😂
It might be worth getting rid of the emissions guff on the rocker cover while it's apart. The rubber hoses on a friends bike caught fire after a spirited ride! Luckily we managed to put it out with a watering can...

I am currently watching this, in my living room..with a 1991 CBR1000F fuel tank on my lap. 😂 I am detailing, cutting & polishing the paint. The fairing has had many hours spent already detailing. The engine, frame & other metal/plastic/rubber thingamy bib bobs are next 🤩 I go this level of cleaning & polishing on all my bikes, because….. because I like doing it 🤓 * Best BBB series this.. & I still have my ‘90 ZXR750 H2 & ‘98 750 SRAD 👍🏼
in regards to the grubby electric connectors these can be disassembled to there single metal pins for a more detailed clean. a laborious job and can be tricky but brings major peace of mind and you may even slay the odd electric gremlin on your way
If you really want to get into it. Yes you can have a new rear subframe fabricated - Dusty Customs in Scotland has done a couple. You can fit the 2004 ZX10R front end and Rear Swing arm to the bike. You can also fit an RSV rear swing arm and apparently some guys have fitted Mille forks as well. Huge array of mods you can do the the P 7Rs including fitting a B ZX9R engine and even a 04 ZX10R Engine. Other year 10R and 6R parts work in places too. You also have the ZX12R rear shock mod. Can Delete the Air cleaner system and blank off (TRRacespares has the plates) Float bowl mod Quite a few guys are now making 3D printed parts as well to reduce even more weight. You really can get these things and make them something completely different and And all you really need is the frame! If you don't have a +4° ignition advance I've one I can send you 👍

Hi Sir I’m a professional Detailer. Ever thought of a steam cleaner . Heat is amazing for grime. Just good citrus cleaner . Very cheap.They are amazing for bikes. Also compressed air godsend for small places. Cheap head torch also helps. Love from Scotland 🏴
You mentioned in the video that you wanted to fit the wsbk style rear lift hook to your Zx7r, I was looking for the same thing for mine and found out that the Gilles TCA chain adjuster fit from a 2011- zx10r they can also be fitted with the lift hooks too as an optional extra

degreaser is a load better than WD, usually cheaper too.. just go ham with the stuff then blast with a pressure washer from range, cover parts you dont want water into wit tape then dry with a air hose with air gun.
"clean" and "working" are mutually exclusive goals in old wiring. if it works don't touch it and it will stay that way. you can cover it up with clean plastics and theil never have to know.
Be careful using ebay radiator, I brought one from mandp for the blade and over a years use the lower 2 cores expanded and mandp would not replace it. Wasn't happy.
Chris could you please do a update video on the 916, what you have done to it and any further plans with it. I have a 94 916 and wondering on certain parts eg what size Brembo Brake and Clutch master cylinders you went with. Cheers.
I'd be tempted to buy a zx-6r (F, G or J model) and try to graft on the zx7r fairing. The weight saving (about 30kg!) would be done instantly, and they're faster bikes in every situation except the top 10mph.
Watching this series is making me lust after my old one.....I did 50k miles on it. Thiccer than a snicker. So much fun to throw around because of the weight. I remember doing wheelies on it and the landings were fork seal busting due to the weight of it. It's a very involving bike to ride due to its chonk

Shame is utterly pissing dowm here atm though :( Too cold and too wet to work on my bike and unfortunately no way to bring her inside either 😥 Also zx7r's are worth a fair bit of coin in Australia, few Ive seen for sale have been very exspensive even for ratty one's, seen a supposed "mint" one for just a beesdick under 20k Aud. I could not believe my eyeballs Oh and the parts you have for it are horn af, love that og hindle exhaust too super nice !

When I did mine I just replaced the foam filter element and kept the plastic frame and the wire mesh too, which helps support the new foam.

Mains will prob be 160 on cylinders 1&4 and 165 on cylinders 2&3 if left stock jets after the mod them she will run very rich

Carb and choke cleaner is the single best degreaser I've ever found, also works great to clean your hands, though it is a bit cold.

Shouldn't you put the old frame onto the new filter? That's why there are holes in it

OK, but when we weighed it a JHS it was also considerably front heavy.

Yes there is no great quantity of liquid or force. much better than a power washer.

I had no luck with silicon hoses on my 2004 Busa ...... they would eventually leak. Had friends who had that trouble, also. Nice video !!! 🙂

You can never go too far… 2021 I started changing my chain and sprockets on my k1 600… around £900 later it’s had a full overhaul, change of bearings, forks/shock rebuilt, powder coat etc… this winter the engine might get an overhaul too😅🤣 safe to say I can’t ever sell it now😊😂

It might be worth getting rid of the emissions guff on the rocker cover while it's apart. The rubber hoses on a friends bike caught fire after a spirited ride! Luckily we managed to put it out with a watering can...

I get the ocd cleaning thing.. I am currently watching this, in my living room..with a 1991 CBR1000F fuel tank on my lap. 😂 I am detailing, cutting & polishing the paint. The fairing has had many hours spent already detailing. The engine, frame & other metal/plastic/rubber thingamy bib bobs are next 🤩
I go this level of cleaning & polishing on all my bikes, because….. because I like doing it 🤓

in regards to the grubby electric connectors these can be disassembled to there single metal pins for a more detailed clean. a laborious job and can be tricky but brings major peace of mind and you may even slay the odd electric gremlin on your way

So important to do as much yourself as possible, so that you get familiar with every inch and fitting on the bike.
If you really want to get into it.
Yes you can have a new rear subframe fabricated - Dusty Customs in Scotland has done a couple.
You can fit the 2004 ZX10R front end and Rear Swing arm to the bike.
You can also fit an RSV rear swing arm and apparently some guys have fitted Mille forks as well.
Huge array of mods you can do the the P 7Rs including fitting a B ZX9R engine and even a 04 ZX10R Engine.
Other year 10R and 6R parts work in places too.
You also have the ZX12R rear shock mod.
Can Delete the Air cleaner system and blank off (TRRacespares has the plates)
Float bowl mod
Quite a few guys are now making 3D printed parts as well to reduce even more weight.
You really can get these things and make them something completely different and And all you really need is the frame!

Ever thought of a steam cleaner . Heat is amazing for grime. Just good citrus cleaner . Very cheap.They are amazing for bikes. Also compressed air godsend for small places. Cheap head torch also helps.

Are coloured Samco hoses the new coloured anodised bolt it?
You mentioned in the video that you wanted to fit the wsbk style rear lift hook to your Zx7r, I was looking for the same thing for mine and found out that the Gilles TCA chain adjuster fit from a 2011- zx10r they can also be fitted with the lift hooks too as an optional extra
Oh you would also need the rear axle from a zx10r or zx12r

degreaser is a load better than WD, usually cheaper too.. just go ham with the stuff then blast with a pressure washer from range, cover parts you dont want water into wit tape then dry with a air hose with air gun.
"clean" and "working" are mutually exclusive goals in old wiring. if it works don't touch it and it will stay that way. you can cover it up with clean plastics and theil never have to know.

Early on in the video you mention extending the swing arm, wouldn't extending the swing arm move the the mass bias further forward?

Be careful using ebay radiator, I brought one from mandp for the blade and over a years use the lower 2 cores expanded and mandp would not replace it. Wasn't happy.
Chris could you please do a update video on the 916, what you have done to it and any further plans with it. I have a 94 916 and wondering on certain parts eg what size Brembo Brake and Clutch master cylinders you went with. Cheers.

I'd be tempted to buy a zx-6r (F, G or J model) and try to graft on the zx7r fairing.
The weight saving (about 30kg!) would be done instantly, and they're faster bikes in every situation except the top 10mph.
Watching this series is making me lust after my old one.....I did 50k miles on it. Thiccer than a snicker. So much fun to throw around because of the weight. I remember doing wheelies on it and the landings were fork seal busting due to the weight of it. It's a very involving bike to ride due to its chonk

Also zx7r's are worth a fair bit of coin in Australia, few Ive seen for sale have been very exspensive even for ratty one's, seen a supposed "mint" one for just a beesdick under 20k Aud. I could not believe my eyeballs
