They probably weren't refugees, though. All over England and Europe kids were shipped out of the cities and put at great country houses to hopefully keep them safe from the war. CS Lewis wrote about that experience, and it was at one of these country houses that he invented "Animal Land" with his brother which became Narnia.

Per google…Unfortunately for those named Fanny, in the 1920s in England and Australia the word came to be a vulgar reference to the female anatomy. As the word made its way to America, it came to refer to the rear end instead…and its crassness softness. 🤷‍♀️ 😮

To add to the "fanny" discussion: back in the '80s, my husband worked in a liaison office with Brits, Canadians and Americans, among others. The British group hired an American army wife who had to take a day off when her furniture/household goods arrived from the States. The next day in the office, her co-workers very politely asked her how the move-in went and she heaved a big sigh and said "my husband worked my fanny off". The British guys froze, coffee cups halfway to their lips, eyes bugged out; they had no idea how to respond to that, whether to offer sympathy, congratulations, or some other comment. I always laugh when I think of that moment!

In my country it would have probably been pulled down and replaced by an ugly, architecturally uninteresting structure and constructed with materials that are designed to be obsolescent. To see you take on something of this magnitude, Dan, with it's amazing history and potential is inspiring. It's so remarkable that with RUclips and Patreon support, you are able to do this, because a few years ago, this wouldn't have been possible. Go Dan!

I just watched a video on a 230 year old Georgian mansion which looks in very good condition, has a roof and doesn’t look like it’s in very bad condition from what was viewed but it is probably going to be destroyed and it is very pretty inside and out. From the beginning of the video I thought it was your chateau. Stay safe Dan, praying for your success. Might cover the deep well you found with boards to avoid someone falling into it when walking to cut grass or exploring on the way towards the swimming area.

That Yew Tree is remarkable, it would be interesting to get an experts opinion on its age at some point, it definitely looks much older than 100 years. 🌳

Hard to tell from a few seconds of video but Yew trees are capable of incredible growth in a relatively short period of time. I'm still not totally sure what area of France this is but if it's mid to northern France with a good winter frost then 100 years appears to be about the right age for a woodland setting.

What a wonderful story regarding the swimming pool, I think you just earned yourself another patron! I am a US citizen, senior, and understand what WWII was about. Am so pleased that the place found you! Thank you so very much for your dedication and hard work! Millie, Mississippi, USA.

7:01 Hi Dan you can buy special liners for swimming pools! Also very easy in this technological age to 're-grout' the walls and bottom with marine grout' - again making it water tight. Yes all the nearby trees need felling and stumping to remove any roots. It would be fitting to restore it (or improve it) so it held water and could be a lovely pool for you and your family. It would in a way be a tribute to all the wonderful children that were saved who played in it! As its a well its 'free water' so GO FOR IT! I Rent a room in a cottage that has its own well - so FREE WATER here too!
Wouldn't your priority be to get scaffolding up and one of those VAST temporary plastic roof coverings, they put over houses whilst they build a loft room or re roof the property? It will protect all your new floors and timber!👍👍👍 BEAUTIFUL METAL FABRICATION for your house name!👏👏👏

I have to admit that when I look at that building, I don't know how you're going to restore it. It is just a show. The amount of work that needs to be done is staggering as is the amount of money that will be required. However, I know that you wouldn't take this on if you didn't know you could do it. I wish you the best of luck. It was a truly beautiful place, and I hope it will be again.
