My dad said “keep your eye on that kid, he’s gonna be a wrecking ball.” And I did just that. I followed him to Texas Tech, watching every football game, and then the Chiefs. Went to school with Mahomes at Texas Tech University and all the trick shots and cross-body throws (not to mention the now famous no-look throws) all were practiced and performed against our rival schools in the Big 12 back in 2015-2016 so we all knew he was going to wreck the league before anyone else even the Kansas City faithful I might add! At the time they had Alex Smith as a QB taking them to the playoffs every year so I had to defend his draft selection SO many times in 2017 before he broke records in the following years! Incredible the amount of people he has impacted and touched just a few years removed from school even the University and Arrowhead Stadium at KC have a marketing partnership you will often see the Texas Tech brand imposed on the screens!

    To add more context to that jump pass against the Titans...that was Mahomes' first game back from dislocating his kneecap....and he only missed two games! That's an injury that could potentially sideline a player for 6-8 weeks. Not only did he only miss two games, he threw for about 350 yards and 3 TDs against the Titans in that first game back. He partially jumped there to get the ball off and not run into his lineman, but also jumped to protect himself so he wouldn't get crunched at the knees by the rushers with his feet planted in the ground. Hey, Chatwin! Happy to see you enjoying our American football! You were talking about the way Patrick Mahomes throws a ball and it's really not the way quarterbacks are taught to throw. He doesn't throw that way all the time, but he does it enough to get the job done. As a matter of fact, several coaches hated the way Mahomes throws, and they even called him "undisciplined." Some wouldn't even consider drafting him to their team because of his unorthodox style. But once the coaches and staff saw that Mahomes is winning, they have changed the way they scout for quarterbacks. They now want some of that "Mahomes Magic." (Also, Mahomes played baseball in college, and you can see some of that baseball style in the way he fires off the football.)

His ability to successfully do things that are basically against the "quarterback rules" (jump passes, across the body throws, no look throws, weird arm angles, etc.) wreak havoc with defensive schemes. The NFL always adapts with time, but right now Patrick Mahomes is a cheat code against a modern NFL defense.

      At this point, there simply is no legitimate argument that Mahomes is not the the "best" ever. Not to be conflated with accomplishments. Its unlikely Mahomes will get more Superbowls than Brady, and due to his much more athletic style, also unlikely he will eclipse some of those records Brady's holds, due to his longevity. So that GOAT status will be argued for years and years.

    • @jamesgarrett5503
      @jamesgarrett5503 Год назад

      @Chris M I respectfully disagree. I do believe he will eclipse everything Brady did, including superbowl wins. I mean really we should be looking at 4 superbowl appearances out of 5 years. We have Ford to thank for that. I mean the game was won if not for him lining up offsides. Likely would have won that superbowl as well. They may have beaten the bucs if he wasn't missing his entire starting online outside of center, which so happened to be the worst player on that online. I know this is all speculation and things did not turn out in his favor in the end. To think he can't win 8 superbowls at this point, is just preposterous. He has a much better and younger online now. He has a nice receivng corps that is young and could develop into something nice this year (KT's health.) The defense is also young and rounding into form. They have added plenty of dbs this year as well just in case some of our sophomores don't take the next step. The defensive line should also be better especially with a new edge opposite Karloftis on pass rushing downs. Even if he doesn't work out, we still have Omenihu who I believe is still getting better, to fill in, plus they may sign another vet edge rusher to help fill the role as well. Either way I'm not too worried about our dline. I expect the defense as a whole to be better this year and create more turnovers this year, which only gives Mahomet more possessions. There is always the outside chance that we add DHop as well. If that happens they are for sure superbowl bound this season. There is no other like Mahomes and he has done what he has done with subpar defenses backing him up. Brady had top 5 defenses backing him up. That's why I think it's crazy to believe Mahomes can't win 8 superbowls. He doesn't take that many hits either because of his scrambling ability. I think he will play a long time in this league. I would be willing to bet that he wins 3 more superbowls in the next 5 years. They are only getting better. The arrow is pointing up for them. Only injuries at this point can derail them. 5 years starting, 5 afc championships is the floor for Mahomes and the Chiefs. They will be there again this year. No doubt in my mind.

    • @ckmoore101
      @ckmoore101 Год назад

      @@jamesgarrett5503 I didn't say Mahomes can't match Superbowl wins, I said unlikely. Which is 100% accurate, if you consider that pesky constant, math. I am a complete Chiefs fan, but I am also logical. It is a much more "preposterous" claim, to be more sure of someone winning 8 Superbowls than not. No matter how much blind faith in the unknown you have, you can't say the Chiefs would have won that superbowl, and just count it as a phantom Superbowl win, had Ford not ruined the opportunity.
      Regarding Mahomes "not taking that many hits", you forget about the ankle (twice), concussion, kneecap from hits, and the turf toe from scrambling. All of those are resulting from a mobile/scrambling QB. The type of hits and situations that Brady was great at avoiding. All that points to a much shorter career. Backed up by, oh, literally all careers stats of every QB ever.
      Sure, Mahomes could literally be that singular unicorn, to buck that trend. But, to repeat myself, that is _unlikely_ .
      And that isn't even considering how a serious injury that could derail a whole season, and/or affect his amazing abilities, short or long term.

    • @jamesgarrett5503
      @jamesgarrett5503 Год назад

      @Chris M every year there is a favorite and the Chiefs are the favorite again this year. I never gave them a phantom anything. I was merely pointing out that the smallest of details kept him from returning to another superbowl is all I was trying to say. As far as injuries goes. His turf toe, yes of course those things happen to a scrambling qb. The ankle I jury had nothing to do with scrambling. It had to do with OB sucking. Mahomes never even made it out of the pocket. Brady missed an entire season. Any qb can get injured at anytime. Mahomes eludes more pressure than he ever faces. He will have an even better online this year. That's something to take into account. He was injured on the qb sneak. That's just a freak thing. What he doesn't do is get hit more because of being a scrambling qb. He either slides or gets out of bounds. He is a football player, so he is going to take a hit every now and again, going for a first down or a td or something to that affect. His scrambling is what keeps him clean. He's been to 3 bowls in 5 years and hasn't reached his full potential yet. He has a team that is better than any team he has had so far. Who is to say he won't go back to 3 more in the next 5 years. Sometimes, there are acceptions to the rule. Mahomes has clearly shown he is the acception. He has went to 5 consecutive afc championships and you think he can't get to 8 bowls because of the math. I'm sorry but I disagree. There are always outliers outside of the mean. All things point to the chiefs going to another superbowl. They have one of the youngest teams in the league and still won the superbowl playing a bunch of rooks. They had injured wideouts in Schuster and Hardman who were practically nonfactors. Mahomes was also injured himself and they still won it all. Tony and Moore should be better this year. MVS has another year in the system. We added another promising wideout, and plenty more on an already young and blossoming defense. I don't care what the numbers are. When you have something outside the norm then the norm no longer applies. Frankly, I think it's stupid, to not recognize all those factors.

      Yeah okay he's a great athlete but a fact is that his body is used to throwing at odd angles often going away from the play because he played shortstop and third base where are you are constantly being asked to make throws to second or first base. And I would suggest it as a quarterback those across this body throws are just as much mind games with the defense as they are elite athletic plays. Nobody expects anybody to run towards the left sideline and then square his shoulders to a receiver who's basically behind him even though he's up field and throw a ball 40 yd downfield and thirty yards behind himself over his right shoulder lol

All of those were from his first two years in the league. Mahomes has refined his game, is better now, and the sheer will to win with all his guys along with him was on full display this last year all the way through to the end of the Super Bowl. You picked a decent team to root for in the Jags. They'll play the Chiefs this September, and may meet again in the playoffs.

    I live in Kansas and have watched the Chiefs through out my time watching football (there were some breaks lol). But Favre got me into football, I loved his style. Like if I was a QB I'd be the Favre type. There are more differences between the two but the biggest one is Mahomes can be a risk taker and gunslinger just like Favre but it works out more than Favre. When Favre did something like this it was 50-50 or maybe even higher on if it would be intercepted.
    Mahomes has just been incredible to watch, I've either watched or listened to all but 1 or two since he started. Did not see anything like this happening when they let Smith go.

    Talented, has an arm that can do anything, somehow gets out of most tight spots...but the most impressive talent of Patrick Mahomes is his focus. He always knows where he wants to throw, even as he runs forwards, backwards, in circles....with opponents chasing, even on his way down...and apparently the absolutely GOAT for QBs playing with 1 leg! They've shown him in practice making long passes by throwing over his back and hitting the trash can.
    I've never been that impressed w/Brady. Good QB but his "special" talent is getting refs and the NFL to favor him. And he was weirdly much better when in NE where he had a coach that would cheat for him - like Deflategate.
    As an aside, another thing to note about Mahomes is that everyone loves him...at least everyone who isn't playing or rooting against him. He goes out of his way to bond with his teammates, he's super involved in his team and the fans, and you won't find him throwing a tantrum when things don't go his way. The only time I've seen him crazy mad was when he was told to come out of the game with his sprain.

  • @kchandaman3012
    @kchandaman3012 Год назад +4

    One thing that should be noted is that in 2022, Mahomes dropped back significantly less on average per snap. You see a lot of these highlights where he drops back a ton to avoid a sack and extend the play, and in the first three seasons of his starting QB career it worked, but in 2021-22 it became harder for him to work against defenses that were able to adapt to that style of play. That was especially evident in the 2022 AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals where the Bengals defense made Mahomes struggle to complete passes WAY more in the second half than in the first, which led to them losing a double-digit lead and ultimately losing the game by 3 points in overtime. But losing Tyreek Hill, his best receiver, to a trade to the Miami Dolphins actually made him better at not dropping back so much and making faster reads against a wider receiver ensemble that didn't have so much talent concentrated in one player like with Hill. That's why he was able to beat the Bengals in the 2023 AFC Championship Game despite injuring his ankle a week prior and then win the Super Bowl.
    The Chiefs are a fantastic team and Mahomes is tons of fun to watch. But you should be excited for the Jaguars next season! They've come a long way. And yes, Trevor Lawrence is their QB :) he's really improved since his rookie season!

    At 3:00 the stadium is the old Raiders location. It’s called the Oakland Colosseum and was made to be a multipurpose stadium for both the A’s (The baseball team) and the Raiders which is why the field looked so bad. The Raiders have since moved to Las Vegas and now have one of the nicest stadiums in the NFL. The A’s are also expected to leave Oakland for Vegas soon but they will both be in different stadiums in Vegas unlike in Oakland.

    You made a good observation on Mahomes's throwing technique. The term used in order to describe throwing motion is "mechanics".
    Analysts and coaches might evaluate a quarterback as "mechanically sound", meaning that his technique is classic and needs little refinement.
    Mahomes's mechanics are unconventional, to say the least. In the eyes of some stodgy purists, it is a weakness of his game. What they dismiss, is that Mahomes is talented enough, that he doesn't *require* classic mechanical fundamentals in order to throw hard, accurately, and far.
    Mahomes is actually living testimony that youth athletes should play multiple sports as they develop, rather than specialize from a young age. The way he throws a football, is often typical for a baseball middle infielder. The way he improvises, constantly looking for moving players downfield, is similar to running a transition offense in basketball.
    I have seen the greatest ever. Mahomes is playing the position better than any of them. He's *THAT* good.

  • @Knowingspy
    @Knowingspy Год назад

    You know he's good when you're watching the highlights and thinking of the same number of plays that didnt get included - and obviously there's still a bunch that are more recent that don't get mentioned. And some of the craziest throws he's done didn't even get a TD, like the two in the SB against Tampa (maybe don't react to it, but I highly recommend that you find them).
    As a fairly recent fan myself, what's great about watching the NFL is that you can make an argument for a number of different QBs being your favourite, especially in the AFC. Its so much more pass oriented now, and that makes a more interesting league. But I just think no one does quite what Pat does on the field and that's why I'll always rate him highest.

      Literally just typed to someone about that. They were saying Mahomes couldn't or was unlikely to win 8 superbowls. I said Mahomes has won 2 and could have had up to 4 by now is Ford hadn't lined up offsides and he didn't lose his entire online , including second string they may have beaten the buck. The only starter playing was center Austin Reiter who was straight trash and the weakest link on that online, even among the backups. He also had 20+ ranked defenses versus Tom Bradys top 5 defenses. Mahomes is the better qb and I think it's obvious to see, and he handles pressure, meaning game pressure better than anyone I've ever seen. Why on Earth would anybody think he can't win 8 Superbowls? I think it's absurd to think he can't. He has transcended and changed the game. The league is playing catchup to him and the Chiefs organization. I think the chiefs have a great chance of winning it all this year and the following year.
