    Question: I thought "chercher" meant "to look for/to search". Does the meaning vary depending on how it is used in a sentence/question?

    • @laurie1741
      @laurie1741 4 года назад

      yes, french is not my native language but i've learned that it only means "to try" in this specific situation (followed by "à + infinitive/noun)

    • @omarkhazamov
      @omarkhazamov 4 года назад

      It has several meanings. Similarly, the first translation of "arriver à" that comes to mind is to arrive; apparently, it can also mean "to manage to". I'm guessing Alexa gave these "new" translations on purpose to make sure everyone learns something new.

      CHERCHER quelque-chose (to look for something) does mean to look for when on its own. (Je cherche mes clés/ I'm looking for my keys.)
      CHERCHER À means to try, to be looking at. (Je cherche à louer un appartement. I'm looking at renting a flat.)

    Hi Alexa! Thank you very much for such useful videos! Can you please explain the reason why there’s ‘de’ in between those verbs: Il aimait la façon gracieuse qu’elle avait de nager dans l’eau.

    • @learnfrenchwithalexa
      @learnfrenchwithalexa  6 лет назад

      "de" is here a preposition complementing the "façon gracieuse" that "qu'elle avait". Meaning "she had a way of swiming ...". We could have written also "Il aimait SA façon gracieuse de nager dans l'eau".

      Alex Salazar Because this is a list of verbs that are followed by de/à + infinitive or gerund (that is, another verb). To learn to write, to help cook, to continue to be, to prevent from spoiling, etc.
      Parler, plaire, and écrire are followed by à + somebody or something (that is, a noun), such as to talk to somebody, to write to somebody, etc.
