Hi alexa, learning french from you from a year and now guess what i am in france for next 5-10 years . thanks for your positivity and will be happy to meet you face to face . it will inspire me to learn french more after meeting one of the best teacher ................
Merci beaucoup Alexa pour ton magnifique travail!!! I've watched every single video of yours and I can tell you that I'm amazed at your great teaching skills. All I can say is that your transmissibility is beyond unique!!! 😊 Thank you again, many kisses from Greece!!!
There has never been a video of yours -- even about things I thought I knew already -- from which I didn't learn new things. But this one was by far one of the most useful and filled a niche for me! Merci! 😊
Hello I love watching your videos Alexa. Could you do one on when to use de or a with nouns and adjectives? Such as silk dress. Robe de soie or pot a lait. What is the difference? Please help.
Still I am confuse in 'de' and 'a'. Your all the videos are really very clear and simple, but this one, i still couldn't understand the difference between two. i seems that there is no rule, i just need to learn by heart where to use "de" or "a"
Rama Arora just treat it as two rules. So there is a group of verbs that use de and another that use à. And yes you will have to learn them, but there aren’t that many to learn really.
Why ''de" has so many different meanings. Sometime "de" is "of", some othertime it is "to" or "from". Why french has no seperate word for "of ", "to" and "from.? It is very difficult. Please make video on the rules of "de".
Marcus O'Hara yea. I asked my French professor once what’s difference between de a and en those little words, she kinds of get mad, then she explains I’m still to new to this lol
Hello. I love watching your videos Alexa. Could you do a lesson on when to use de or a with adjectives and nouns connected? As in silk dress. Robe de soie. Pot a lait. Tarte aux fraises. Maybe incidentally you could have side note about why blue dress is robe blue. Thank you for your help.
It has several meanings. Similarly, the first translation of "arriver à" that comes to mind is to arrive; apparently, it can also mean "to manage to". I'm guessing Alexa gave these "new" translations on purpose to make sure everyone learns something new.
CHERCHER quelque-chose (to look for something) does mean to look for when on its own. (Je cherche mes clés/ I'm looking for my keys.) CHERCHER À means to try, to be looking at. (Je cherche à louer un appartement. I'm looking at renting a flat.)
Hi Alexa! Thank you very much for such useful videos! Can you please explain the reason why there’s ‘de’ in between those verbs: Il aimait la façon gracieuse qu’elle avait de nager dans l’eau.
"de" is here a preposition complementing the "façon gracieuse" that "qu'elle avait". Meaning "she had a way of swiming ...". We could have written also "Il aimait SA façon gracieuse de nager dans l'eau".
hello, i love very much your lessons, they are very useful. Regarding to this lesson, would you please make a video to talk about when should or should not pronounce 'de' in the sentence please? i had learnt that in the phonetic class before, but i have totally forgotten. thank you.
I have a problem distinguishing between (à) and (au/ à la/ à l'/ aux) What's the difference? I cannot really tell when to use each I'm still so beginner, I'd be glad if you can help!
Bonjour Alexa! je suis en France depuis juste 2 ans et bien que mon mari est Français, il parle anglais parfaitement donc c'est difficile de parler en français ensemble. (je suis americaine). J'apprends encore et je fais du progrès mais je ne suis pas sûr que...I will be able to promounce the "r" correctly. Les personnes françaises me comprennent pourtant (?) donc yay! J'ai une bonne question que personne peut me dire. Comment dire "quand-meme?" (off topic question, I know!) Merci et une belle journée à vous.
So, we need to memorize which verbs are followed by de and which ones are followed by à? If so, I guess that I will need to use some flashcards, and study them until I have them down.
Excellent lesson but maybe too many dates. Please, could you explain with examples or a serie of videos? Because the verb and prep. Is one of the week points of Roa nice learners. Thanks a lot.
Hello Alexa, Why did you not include plaire a, ecrire a, and parler a in the list of prepositional verbs with a? Are those three not real prepositional verbs with a? I learned those three from Learn French with Pascal.
Alex Salazar Because this is a list of verbs that are followed by de/à + infinitive or gerund (that is, another verb). To learn to write, to help cook, to continue to be, to prevent from spoiling, etc. Parler, plaire, and écrire are followed by à + somebody or something (that is, a noun), such as to talk to somebody, to write to somebody, etc.
J'ai besoin d'examples avec ces expressions dans les phrases, s'il vous plait. Ca m'aide beaucoup. Mai je veux exemple pour autre expressions et mots aussi. Ma probleme est l'expression dans les phrases. Merci. Bissous.

Yes, me too, i learn by heart, up load listening france, so i must notice when native france say with de or a.
Let me tell you
À is used for to/at/in
For ex. Je vais a la plage
De is used for of / from/
about
For ex. Je viens de la plage
Is there a rule for when to use de and when to use à, or do you have to learn each one by heart?
Yes, I thought the same!
Yup, you've just got to memorise which verb takes which prepostition. Welcome to French ;)

Question: I thought "chercher" meant "to look for/to search". Does the meaning vary depending on how it is used in a sentence/question?
yes, french is not my native language but i've learned that it only means "to try" in this specific situation (followed by "à + infinitive/noun)
It has several meanings. Similarly, the first translation of "arriver à" that comes to mind is to arrive; apparently, it can also mean "to manage to". I'm guessing Alexa gave these "new" translations on purpose to make sure everyone learns something new.

Merçi Alexa! This is exactly what we're studying at school now, so it's very useful.
04:14 chercher translated as to try, the right translation must be to search
Thanks so much

What about other verbs such as aller? Would it be follow by à?
Alexa: there’s no -ing in French.
En train de/d’: am I a joke to you?
Very useful, Alexa! That might help us with y and en incidentally
Merci!
I am never sure whether to us de or a after a verb. Is it strictly memory or is there a rule?
Thanks for this video. But are these lists exhaustive? Does it cover ALL the verbs followed by "de" and "a" or perhaps there are more?
Alexa thanks for another great lesson. You are tops. Or Tu est un professuer extraordinaire. I hope thats in the right order. lol
I wish there was example ! Merci!
I would say “chercher à” is rather “to search for” or “to look for” and not “to try to”.
C'est toujours bien présenté chez vous. Merci.

Le toit: the roof

Hello Alexa,

Alex Salazar Because this is a list of verbs that are followed by de/à + infinitive or gerund (that is, another verb). To learn to write, to help cook, to continue to be, to prevent from spoiling, etc.
Parler, plaire, and écrire are followed by à + somebody or something (that is, a noun), such as to talk to somebody, to write to somebody, etc.
i came across this sentence "attend de bien connaitre les gens" ...why is attend not in the de verb list ??

How can I find whether a verb is propositional (à or de) in a dictionary? Le Petit Robert
Commencer in the future tense
tres bien prefesseur
Nice
Merci bisous
J'aime ça
But in English to is not a preposition. It's with the verb. The infinitive in English is to be ,to go ,to eat...
can you not use the infinitive form of the verb by itself, for example
je veux aller au cinema
it is not je veux de aller au cinema
Oui oui cette phrase est correcte :)
Cette phrase est Passé récent
You surprise me every time !!!
So de is for feminine and A is for masculine
