Jeffrey Northrup death: How video evidence played a role in the Umar Zameer trial
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 апр 2024
- In a Toronto courtroom on Sunday, Umar Zameer was found not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Cst. Jeffry Northrup. The case revolved around whether Zameer had intended to hit Northrup with his car and whether he knew that Northrup and his partner were police officers.
During the trial, video evidence and testimony from crash reconstruction experts contradicted testimony from three witness police officers about Northrup's position at the time he was hit. The defence also alleged that the officers repeatedly lied under oath, a claim echoed by the judge, who warned the jury to watch out for possible collusion.
Former Crown attorney and now defense lawyer Michael Coristine sheds light on the role of video evidence in the trial and the allegations of collusion.

Without the video, an innocent family man would be in prison because of the lies of police. How many cases didn’t have video?
All too many, no doubt.
A lot. Judges, lawyers (on all “sides”) are complicit and unregulated. Look at insurance plans by lawpro and others for cause / root of these issues.
@@BearbearbearbearbearbearRarrrr the root cause is officers taking the law into their own hands. Prosecutors only work with what police provide. Many others accomplishes along the way but the root is arrest and phony reports
He's not innocent he killed a cop
just ask Marshall and many other Canadians jailed for many years for crimes they didn't commit.
The three cops and the police chief should all be charged for perjury and for lying to the crown
Facts 💯
They are accusations...it has not been proven.
The three officers should be charged - they tried to take someone’s life by lying.
Exactly
So of these officers lied under oath , are they being charged for perjury?
LOL cops? Charged? Not in this reality
@@fredarsenault8987 it is pretty funny and sad all on one
They absolutely should be charged with perjury
Cops perjuring themselves is a common an occurrence. Happens everyday throughout Canada.
@@mattyspaghetti449 Exactly.
Cops need to properly identify themselves, given the rise in automotive crime. A sad side effect of tolerating crime.
Being in uniform is the first identifier.
Please stop with all the logic.
Come on people give this some thought, of course the defense is going to try to discredit the testifying police officers, its part of his strategy in front of a jury. Its a complicated case and of course the media is going to play off that accusation, need to sell more advertising.
@@alfredspence305Do you have any evidence of this? Ever been a juror in a criminal trial? It's not like on TV it's very serious and the judge and jury seem to disagree with you. The jury cannot watch media during the trial. The prosecution failed to prove ANYTHING. But of course you are right because everyone else is wrong in your OPINION. Serve on a criminal jury sometime where a person's life is at stake and then come back and tell us this.
@@alfredspence305 So according to you the investigators, judge, and jury are all making it up. The facts and evidence of the case point to the officers lying while under oath to save themselves. Unless you can provide some new evidence to prove otherwise we will rightfully consider you a lunatic.
Shame on the police for lying
I hope he seeks legal action. That could have been anyone of us who would send an innocent person to jail. The politicians shame on them who commented on social media when he was given bail. What happened you are presumed innocent before having your day in court. Umar Zameer deserves a public apology from all Canadians who jumped to judgment. He even was in jail 3 months awaiting bail missed the birth of his second child.
I hope public, politicians, police force, crown attorney office learn a hard lesson from the case.
Yes, Doug Ford is such a fine example to our youth, isn't he? "Guilty until proven innocent."

Sicko wants to make money at any price.
All 3 officers should be charged and in JAIL ASAP
They should have been 3 years ago, and this should have been the day THEY were found guilty.
Justice is slow and especially after Covid. Took three years for this case. Might take a bit to get there but it can happen.

@edblarney9456
No, he most definitely is not, and both the judge and jury concluded that. Zameer was understandably fleeing an apparently hostile and dangerous situation in which plainclothes officers failed to identify themselves while acting in a threatening manner. There was clearly neither motive nor intent.
Have to take another look at all the cases these officers were involved in. If they lied here their credibility for every other case is gone.
Buy a damn dash cam and protect yourselves bc evidence is everything. What kind of world do we live in where we can't trust the police?
That is one of the best things to come out of their body cams. The truth. Plain clothes do not have to wear them. Lucky that there are other cameras around. Not so lucky for the police this time.
The kind of world we are already in because we can't trust the police.
they would seize the dash cam then destroy the footage
"police" and "politicians" serve the defacto state of the "Crown" aka CORPORATION of "Canada" .. they protect their "assets" and "liabilities" of the corporation first and foremost... they do not serve the people, it is merely an illusion. Which is why on every ticket, or charge, the plantiff is the "CORPORATION" not any individual person.
How are we supposed to trust the police when they keep doing stuff like this?!? I hope that those 3 offices (who swore to tell the truth UNDER OATH) face consequences for perjury 😤😤😤
Exactly so
Every time I think about what Mr Zameer went through in that underground garage, I feel sick and scared. I can only imagine what him and his wife and baby son went through, scared that they were going to be hurt or killed. OMG it's sickening to think about.
If its so scary why be in a dark parking garage late at night wandering around aimlessly. Every other car left already
Bet they were scared of the police after they knew they were police. He was punched by one cop. They might have been fearful for their lives even once in custody not knowing their rights in this country.
@@timothyirwin8974 bc its worse here than where they came from? Why come then?
@@XetaXones they weren't wandering around aimlessly. If you know something the witnesses didn't tell the court, you should have told the judge, or shut TF UP.
Bunch of liars. They very obviously are liars. Even the judge said it. Disgusting conduct and racism
I don't know whether anybody could prove that the police witnesses lied just because Umar Zameer was Pakistani, or South Asian, or Muslim. If so, then yes, it was racism, but we don't actually know.....yet.
By the way, yes, it is my contention that hating somebody for being Muslim can be called racism, for all that the word "Muslim" means to a bigot is "brown-skinned person" and/or "immigrant".
How can cops earn respect from lying….
Cops lying, what a surprise
Justice prevailed. Those 3 cops should be suspended for lying and trying to put an innocent man to jail. SHAME ON THE TORONTO POLICE and comments of the CHIEF there should be an apology for THE Zameer family and Canadians 😂
Be respectful to officers when they are on duty and wearing the appropriate uniform. If they are "off duty" , tell em to f""" off because there are random people with fake badges walking around in Toronto pretending to be cops. Protect yourself first.
I won't believe anyone in plain clothes saying they're police officers. There are some evil folks out there as you say, pretending to be law enforcement just trying to harm and kill you. Protect yourself first.
Now he need to watch his back forever

Good you don't kill someone and think because a judge and jury acquitted you your safe people will still find you.

The police should be charged i will disappointed if the police are untouchable like the way it has been in the passed
Collusion, perjury, lying, who is being held accountable??? Justice is not done. Who is going to stand up and ask the questions??? Our police chief??? Pffffffffft...
The Toronto police need to be held accountable for their incompetence the day of the incident as well as the malicious prosecution of an absolutely innocent man. I hope the police have the class to come up with a few million dollars before the gentleman has to sue. The deceased officer and other members of the TPS were victims of their own idiocy.
Never trust anyone in law enforcement
Instead of running/walking towards the car in a aggressive manor , Police should have identified themselves first, ...................... then run towards the car in a aggressive manor if that what they like to do .....
He was a non white person so they didnt care to act properly
Not always. Especially when it pertains to police. Many years ago 2 officers smuggled at night beer across the lake and got caught red-handed by customs officers yet, the judge acquitted both with the excuse they didn't have enough time to declare their 'purchases'. REALLY!!! At another time, a police cruiser crashed in Toronto into an overpass support killing one of them. Both of them were over the alcohol limit and, to save the survivor's job, which is usually the driver, the police force could not determine who the driver was and no charges were laid. REALLY!!!
This case has definitely shaken my faith on the police.
Seeing that all those politicians and police chief were acting Judge and Jury before hearing the facts of the case; and those who are still questioning the Jury’s decision, leaves me to believe that this man will never be free to live his life in peace. If I were Mr. Zameer I would leave the country for my own protection. I am not sure that he will be free from the same police force who were willing to lie about what actually happened.
I am not a praying person, but in this situation, all I can say and do is that I pray for the safety of this man and his family going forward.🙏
He murdered a cop and got away clean
I’m all for cops being held accountable if they lied but “ the deference said “they lied! What did they lie about honestly asking?
@@suzannec8400if you are altering and twisting what actually happened as a sworn witness, then you're in fact lying. When you're doing that in court that is perjury. When you perjured and writing false accounts with your cohort officers to fit your desired outcome to thrown an innocent person in jail possibly for life and that's collusion. This is all the more serious especially as police officers as undoubtedly their testimony are usually deemed holding higher credibility in the eyes of most Judges. They have also taken the sacred oath sworn to "Serve and Protect".
@@edblarney9456do you really know what you're talking about? Look it up in the dictionary for the meaning of "Murder" and then compare the intelligence and experiences of the judges , the experts of the two crash reconstruction teams from TPS, and separately the jurors to your own and see for yourself how wrong you have been and still are.
He doesn't think it is fair to say that Canadians have lost faith in Law Enforcement 😂😂
Plainclothes police definitely have a place, but if they're serving warrants or doing arrests there really should be some overt method of identifying them as police.
There is. It's called a uniform. A plain clothed officer should not be considered a police officer and their powers should be limited to those of any other citizen.
Police lying and protecting teach other. Say it ain't so..I keep minimum contact with them and when I do get into contact I turn on my cell video. When thry say to serve and protect. That means to protect them
You lie under oath you must be held accountable.
This is sadly happening to a lot of innocent men, no one ever speaks on it unless it becomes a high profile case with a lawyer paid enough to slave himself for the case to make sure you win the case. How many of us men have a chance to fight in court ? It’s either a plea deal or no deal , yea it’s so real if your lucky to survive that now your on codeine, you’re just a man ,not a being , your simply not there, not seen.
Those 3 policemen should be charged on higher courts for lying. It’s a lie sir on stand or not. Canadians trust the police dept and the Law. Certainly it’s scary to see if our justice dept and law enforcement do not protect us the PEOPLE. I wish the family all the best after what has happened to them these last 3 years and stay blessed and safe. It looks like the cops wanted him to be found guilty. OR may be because of his religion.
I think it is just a police 'thin blue line' type of thinking.
That police chief was hoping the proud , haughty police could barrel through with their lies.
In fact it would have been at his direction that all those lies were pushed forward.
How can you tell if police are lying, when their mouths are moving
I am so sorry that the officer died, my sympathy for the family and relatives but one tragic event does not justify falsehood and punishing the innocent. Mr Zameer is clearly not a criminal stealing cars
Zameer is guilty of manslaughter.
Hatts off to Canadian justice system
... no, hats off to the honest collision investigator, video and jury.
Toronto police is there to show their power. Toronto Police chief was disappointed today that an innocent man was not sent to jail for life. The chief promised to send thousands and thousands of innocent men to jail to show police power
Umar Zameer was found innocent by a jury. The police chief should be fired for saying he was disappointed by the verdict, and the officers should be charged with perjury. It was the police's fault that the situation occurred. It was made very clear by the defense.
I consider the 3 most important days of my life to be the day i married my wife, and the days bith our children were born. Mr Zameer was incarcerated for the birth of his 2nd child. No amount of money from a lawsuit will ever replace that. From the first day I originally heard about the case, it didnt add up. Plainclothes officers should not be accosting a young family. You can throw indiscriminate use of plainclothes policing up there with overuse of "no knock raids" in the category of things that threaten officer safety. Sure there are scenarios where these tactics are preferable, but it isnt when dealing with law abiding citizens with no criminal history
It is shaken. Stop being a hypocrite
the criminal police officers who lied and punched Zameer should be charged with aggravated assault. Being a police officer doesn't give these criminals the right to harass and assault people. The police in Canada have become crooked criminals like that of the police in United States. The police officers involved in this event needs to be charged and held accountable for their actions. They are complicit and responsible for the death of their fellow officer.
They lie all the time, but the judges usually believe them.
Punishment better not be just - paid suspensions.
You sure this guy is a defense attorney? Maybe he still thinks he is Crown Attorney
What a waste of taxpayer resources.
Sadly this is normal 😐
Police and politicians acting like thugs in a civilized society
Someone once said that police and lawbreakers , (those police hunt and arrest), are two sides of the same coin. You can't trust either .
And why are the police officers who have been proven to have been liars under oath.... Why are we not demanding them be arrested?? Folks this could happen to any of us.
Cops Lying under Oath, vs Cops who upheld their Oath.
And what happens when officers lie. Not a dam thing. I believe these officers colluded and came up with a story together.
To start with, approach a suspect carefully and identify themselves instead of the way they acted.
I was stopped and investigated by west vancouver pokice 3 times and my dash cam was the life saver abd it made the police to step back.
What a shame that cops lie under Oath💔💔💔💔🤯🤯🤯🤯
"What a crime," I think you mean - and it _is_ one.
Thank God this ordeal ended for the family. But what about the officer who lied?

Canada is a police state.
God Bless this family. May they recover and move forward.
Will the cops be charged with perjury for lying under oath.
There will be repercussions starting with the judge who will be fuming about what happened in her court room. They take it personally. I have seen it up close in the same court house. Reprimands and demotions probably. Beyond that who knows?
Celebrating every year
So how many civilians were found guilty in the past without video ?
Hmph! Everybody who was hanged at Tyburn, I reckon.
All this could have been avoided in the first place had the officers not behaved in such a reckless manner. Unfortunately, that seems to be today's norm.
I Also have been cornered and roughed up gone through my pockets in a dark corner

Fire the chief and his cronies
Liars they should be fired. They serve to protect their stress cannot lead them to lie which can result in an Innocent conviction.
This lawyer is a suck up.
Its easy to put any allegation to someone who doesn't share same skin color. Even if these officers lied under oath the reporter seems like supported them while court made their decision.
Funny how the guy in the grey suit try’s to make the cops sound better. We didn’t trust someone of them before but now I don’t trust any.
Liars
The police are so shady when such tragic incidents occur ... This is why the SIU can't investigate their own. If there was no video the outcome for Zameer would have been much different and even with video the police tried to switch up the story and the events leading to the death...nothing they are not used to doing and yet this will get swept under the rug and police will continue to investigate their own and blur justice.
If this ex-crown attorney is concerned about upholding the public's confidence in the vast majority of police officers who do an excellent job, then he should push for prosecuting those very few officers who lie under oath and otherwise break the law violating people's rights. If the bad apples are not disciplined or prosecuted when they break the law, or terminated when they lie in court, then the public must assume that all police officers are just as bad. Prosecuting the few bad police officers does not undermine the integrity of the police force: it reinforces it.
You can't expect that... or demand accountability.. !
If a cop lies at the bottom, the top puts a smoke-screen around him and colludes behind it.
It is all about their institutions and their System.
Then you wonder why the public has no faith in our police
How many innocents Police killed and got away because there was no video evidence?

This is not accurate reporting. You called a former crown attorney to comment on this grand case. Definitely the public confidence has been shaken!
Yes, crown attorneys know how to wiggle like fish! Lol
Stop putting police on pedestals, they are behaving as if they are above the law. We must hold police to a much higher standard than the general public. The judge made it clear that this shouldn't have gone to trial.
Now we have The Conservative leader stating he'll use the notwithstanding clause to keep innocent people in jail while they await their day in court. What a monster and what miscarriage of justice this has been.
