Jeffrey Northrup death: How video evidence played a role in the Umar Zameer trial

  • In a Toronto courtroom on Sunday, Umar Zameer was found not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Cst. Jeffry Northrup. The case revolved around whether Zameer had intended to hit Northrup with his car and whether he knew that Northrup and his partner were police officers.
During the trial, video evidence and testimony from crash reconstruction experts contradicted testimony from three witness police officers about Northrup's position at the time he was hit. The defence also alleged that the officers repeatedly lied under oath, a claim echoed by the judge, who warned the jury to watch out for possible collusion.
Former Crown attorney and now defense lawyer Michael Coristine sheds light on the role of video evidence in the trial and the allegations of collusion.

Both of them were over the alcohol limit and, to save the survivor's job, which is usually the driver, the police force could not determine who the driver was and no charges were laid. REALLY!!!

The police are so shady when such tragic incidents occur ... This is why the SIU can't investigate their own. If there was no video the outcome for Zameer would have been much different and even with video the police tried to switch up the story and the events leading to the death...nothing they are not used to doing and yet this will get swept under the rug and police will continue to investigate their own and blur justice.

If this ex-crown attorney is concerned about upholding the public's confidence in the vast majority of police officers who do an excellent job, then he should push for prosecuting those very few officers who lie under oath and otherwise break the law violating people's rights. If the bad apples are not disciplined or prosecuted when they break the law, or terminated when they lie in court, then the public must assume that all police officers are just as bad. Prosecuting the few bad police officers does not undermine the integrity of the police force: it reinforces it.

Stop putting police on pedestals, they are behaving as if they are above the law. We must hold police to a much higher standard than the general public. The judge made it clear that this shouldn't have gone to trial.
Now we have The Conservative leader stating he'll use the notwithstanding clause to keep innocent people in jail while they await their day in court. What a monster and what miscarriage of justice this has been.

One should be very careful, much like this former crown attorney in his comments. After all, he wants to make it home to be with his family just like Umar did. Like they have admitted, "They are a team, a Family" and they could hurt you or anybody else real bad, if they decide to. Zameer, this innocent man, has been put under tremendous fear and pressure, and will live with it for ever. There but for fortune go you or I.
