  • Long time no see, I know, but here's my review of the 911 Carrera GTS with a few thoughts about its new engine, gearbox and a quick comparison with the new 911 GT3, which I drove for AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS: • 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 (...

    Welcome back...........I've got "your" car over here in Canada and I'm loving it. A 2016 991.1 GTS manual. With reviews like this it should make it a collector car in no time! lol, thanks.

    Thank you for the honest review! I just got a 911 Carrera GTS, 2016 the other day and that engine is FIRE! I heard mixed reviews about the more friendlier greener environment twin turbo model and stayed away from that. Glad I did after this review!

    Thank you for the honest review. First person to actually say in detail that yes at daily driving speeds there is a little more lag than the S, and noticeable relative to the NA earlier generations
    I was getting tired of everyone saying “it’s just as responsive as an NA older version”, but technically cannot be true

    A great honest review! Funny you say you can always get a new GT3 with a manual - its pretty well impossible here in North America unless you like financial pain. Here in Vancouver, the local dealerships play secret shell games with the waiting lists (depending on money and god knows what else), and obtaining an allocation can be at least $40K over MSRP assuming you can find/bribe someone to take their spot. The dealerships and how they do business are by far my biggest peeve with Porsche. Fantastic cars (especially the new GT3) but unobtainium for most enthusiasts.

    Great to see you back Guido! I haven't driven the 991.2 but if I were to buy a 911 it would be the GT3 Touring with the screaming naturally aspirated engine. I hope to see you post more videos on this channel in 2018! Happy Holidays!

  • @BertoniBertone
    @BertoniBertone 6 лет назад +1

    Good to see you're back with your 'German Gasoline Culture' , Guido - even though I'm some 5 months late in recognising it ! Personally, I don't think that the GTS (or, indeed, the 'S') is the best example of the 'non-GT' production-series 991.2. I've a 991.2 Carrera manual. No PSE. No rear steer or PTV. 19" wheels. 370 PS might not seem a lot but the car's relatively light, has much better harmony between clutch-gearbox-steering than the 991.1, can be revved-out without threatening your license and still has that flat-6 induction noise..... but audible only above 4000 rpm.
    The sound is actually better WITHOUT the PSE (at least in the cabin): the PSE simply adds volume but does not 'enhance' any sound, in my view, and also drowns out the induction noise at full chat. Sonically, in many ways, I actually now prefer the 991.2 to the 991.1 whose engine sound I find increasingly out of the step with the general zeitgeist: driving around town in a PSE'd 991.1 is getting a bit too puerile (I'm now over 50 :-)....! ) and a tad too 'look-at-me'.
    That kind of thing works (still) for a GT3 but , at least in the UK where we like a little understatement, the 991.2 still adheres to the Porsche dictum of function before form. So, the 3.0 bi-turbo (in its humblest form only) works for 2018 really rather well. And , of course, you're well aware that us 'Porsche Plebs' can't buy GT-cars in the UK anyway: the market is a closed-shop. So rejoice that the best 'cheapest' 911 is actually the best :-)

      BertoniBertone Big thanks for your comment, Sir! I might be abit harsh on the 991.2 and will try to review the Carrera T at some poinr to see if it works better for me. Thank you so much for your feedback! - Guido

    • @BertoniBertone
      @BertoniBertone 6 лет назад

      Pleasure, Guido. A Carrera T review would be interesting. IMO, though a great car (what 991.2 isn't ?), the 'T' is more an opportunity missed than an over-hyped marketing exercise to keep interest in the 'production -series' before they close the line for 992 're-engineering'. I shall look forward to it !

    I recently purchased a C4 GTS and I agree with the engine feeling restricted. Can’t blame Porsche for that. Government environmental and noise restrictions are really hindering the sports car experience. I upgraded my exhaust with Fabspeed headers and cat delete pipes with a TechArt exhaust and a GIAC tune and man does that wake the car up. The new Turbo engine is really a nice upgrade for daily driving and track use. I’ve always been a fan of turbo engines and Porsche got it right. There is definitely more potential to make big horsepower with this platform.

    Welcome back. Please put up more videos!! Not a fan of the new turbo engines. I went backwards and picked up a 993. New cars are too refined and ridiculously fast. I rather go slower and feel everything. When I want speed I take out the 997 gt3 which to me is absolute perfection. It's like a scalpel and the 993 is my daily fun car I can enjoy on the street.

    What allways comes to my mind is the fact, that those press test cars got almost 30, 40 percent premium pricing because of extras. It is not completely representative as far as price goes. I am staying with 991.1 NA even though I do not like the steering feel that much :-) And GT3 is unaffordable almost, great car and I do understand the price but...

    Endlich wieder ein Video von Dir, wunderbar✌🏻
    Findest Du den Motor wirklich so schlecht, bzw den Sound?
    Unser Nachbar fährt einen 911.1 Targa 4S, und natürlich hört dieses Aggregat sich etwas bäriger an. Aber auch das neue 3l-Aggregat hat iwie seinen Reiz, habe es nun öfters bei uns in Oldenburg und Region gehört und muss zugeben, dass ich Ihm nicht abgeneigt bin (vor allem unter Last, sowie beim Anfahren, wenn die Turbos leise säuseln). Zudem habe ich ein Video der Firma Fabspeed gesehen, die beim 911.2 die "Schärfe" des Klangbildes wieder hervorrufen, der den 911-Sauger so gut klingen lässt (meine Meinung)
    Frohes Fest und beste Grüße aus Niedersachsen

    Great to see you producing videos again, Guido 👍🏼. With regards to your question as to opinions on the 3.0 TT F6 engine, well I had my first experience of it earlier this year.
    My comparison is to my BMW 340i with MPPSK (M-Performance Power & Sound Kit). I thought the engine in the 991.2 (Carrera S) was very much like a modern day turbo engine; lots of torque from low down but still able to rev out, albeit in a relatively linear fashion. In all honesty it didn’t feel any better that the B58 engine in my 340i. In fact I would say my engine - aided by the MPPSK - is the better engine of the two.
    However the chassis was a revelation! Needless to say I’m now looking for a nice 991.1 Carrera S.....😀. Looking forward to your next video 👍🏼

    It says a lot that time and time again you are comparing this car against the GT3. A car these days in 991.2 generation with low miles commands approx. $75-80k more than the 991.2 GTS. No doubt the GT3 is sharper in every way, but you have to expect that for a car that still commands $40-50k over sticker for a nice example and is 5-6 years old (991.2 GT3).

    C2S is better and performance is practically the same with less lag.. Standard exhaust has a more pure sound compared with the uber manufactured sound of the PSE. My own experience, and don't believe the marketing hype of having to have the Porsche sports exhaust.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  4 года назад +3

      Havent driven a standard exhaust car but I think with turbocharging the effect of the pse is no longer as big as with the na cars. The 992 is a new level of disappointment for my taste - Guido

    • @scottcowan6798
      @scottcowan6798 4 года назад

      Thanks for your reply. There are perfect examples of the standard exhaust sound which feature as part of two videos. One from Nick Murray which is solely a test of the exhaust noise between PSE and standard, and as part of Henry Catchpole’s EVO test of a standard Miami blue C2S.. goes to show how many customers are brainwashed into believing the marketing hype. Plus the standard system looks better, more classic and makes the narrow body look more than wide enough. All useless now that the Uber dull 992 is here.. Porsche has saved me money though!

    Get over the naturally aspirated engines people. It's like you're trying to compare a dial up modem to a wireless internet connection. My 2018 C4S sounds great, not like the sound of old but still great. It's faster, handles better, safer, and really much more fun & exciting than the cars of old. Better gas mileage, 191 top speed, 0-60 in about 3 secs. Comes out of the apex and handles the power. I mean really ! Go out and buy a 69 water cooled N/A 911 for about $75K & I'm sure you'll be happy. But the technology & engineering in anything newer than 2017 is 2nd to none. Everyone that rides in or drives my 911 falls in love with it. Novices & gear heads alike. It really is the best. 3 cars in one, Everyday driver, bonafide sports car & a tracker as well. 1 price/ 3 cars. Thanks Ferry !!!

      While I appreciate your thoughts they really just sound like marketing to me. If speed and economy excite you more than a pure, raw, unfiltered driving experience delivered by a naturally aspirated engine, you either haven't driven a 997 GT3 or you need to up your driving skills to access the 911 fun I'm talking about in my videos

    Though I disagree with your assessment of the new 991.2, it was still another wonderful video. I’ve owned my manual transmission, 2018 Porsche 911 Carrera since 08/24, use it as my daily driver, and think it is an exciting car to drive, particularly in 3rd & 4th gear. This is my fourth Porsche with the most recent past model being a normally aspirated, manual, 2016, 2.7 Cayman. The amount of get up and go due to the extra torque makes up for any excitement lost from the previous 911. Keep up the great work with your videos and have a very Merry Christmas.

    I agree totally, but what now? I’’m on my 10th Porsche and it’s getting time to update my 991.1 C2s which I totally love, and I just can’t bring myself to buy a turbo car, I’d miss the sound and hate the lag, so what should I buy next? GT3’s are just crazy prices IMO. I can only really think of the R8 Unless you have any other thought. Shame because I thought I’d always drive Porsche.

    Great to have you back! It is so refreshing to have someone voice exactly what we are thinking! Keep it up and please do videos even with the GT3 touring or 911R!

    I agree it can be less involving than the 991.1 (which I also was lucky enough to own) however it is way faster and I think it is louder from the outside compared to the 991.1. I don't agree with the comparison to a GT3 because they are completely different cars - all main 911's are now turbo charged so comparing it to a more track focused car that you simply cannot buy is an unfair comparison. The GT3 is a fantastic marketing tool for Porsche - heres a great car you can't buy so heres the next best thing that makes us more profit. Most of the people whop own a GTS couldn't get a GT3 so the marketing has worked!!

    The gts needs a gt3 4.o motor...porsche needs that in the line up. Nice video. To bad you couldn't get the proper seating position you look uncomfortable.

    Totally agree with you on the engine being the heart of a sports car. The turbo engines have ruined the new 911 as well as the 718 Cayman and Boxsters. They are better cars in every other way apart from the missing flat six howl. Porsche know that cars will not make any noise at all soon, so they are preparing us for the future! The brand new 718 GT4 however has a N/A flat six 4.0 litre. Hope to see you in one of these soon!!!

    Hi G! Welcome back. Where would you put your money? 991.1 GTS or 991.2 GTS? I understand how they do withing their lineups but I’m not clear on your perspective on how those two compare to each other. Thanks!

    Hi Guido nice to see you back with quality journalism. I was wondering what are your thoughts on the up coming Boxster Spyder .....NA flat 6 ? ...will it be launched in Geneva ??

      J M Thanks! I know the GT3 RS will be in Geneva. Not sure about this Spyder. Could be coming in summer for the 70 years of sportscars anniversary of Porsche from what I know. Greetings, Guido

    Welcome back!
    You asked for comments:
    Drove the 911.2 GTS at the press launch in South Africa, including some track work. A fantastic product when it comes to all measurable data. Chassis setup beyond sweet. It actually felt no slower than a 991.1 GT3 on the track, and easier to drive really fast due to the torqier engine. However, you just cannot help missing the thrill of the naturally aspirated engines. The new one may be signficantly faster, but lacks in immidiacy of response, sound, does not really reward being revved out, etc. For me, emotion is much more important than outright pace, so I would choose a used GTS or Carrera S with the naturally aspirated 3.8 engine any day.
    I also generally believe sports car manufacturers now have to downplay the importance of speed and focus on fun: That means skinnier tyres, smaller engines, lower weight. Make the cars feel dramatic at speeds that will not put you in jail! Very curious about what Renaultsport has created with the Alpine A110 (although it is also turbocharged).

    Finally, a reviewer who tells the truth about the poor sound. In my opinion, the base sounds the best and the most like a naturally aspirated engine probably the turbos are smaller. But you are absolutely correct, the entire range sounds nothing like it's former self.

    Long time no see Sir. Carrera treatment does soften the 911 I'd say, which could be the one I'd choose though for that reason, perhaps my aches and pains as I near 50 are the fundamental answer for that?! Fingers crossed for more videos. Camera definition is superb by the way for RUclips.

    Great points. I really get why they have to downsize and compromise but I have no understanding when they try to sell me that the car hasn't lost a lot of it's character... Thx

    It makes not so much sense for me to compare the car to a GT3 as you do. The GT3 is another price range.
