It's a shame this movie wasn't marketed more. It's a really enjoyable adventure flick with likeable characters and a pretty good twist.
I watched the movie in cinema and only 4 people were with me in the same room, at the premiere!
I kind of liked the movie, then I went home and I made the mistake of visiting review sites and looked at the comments. Like 90 percent of the one star reviews contain homophobic hate and it broke my heart.
I'm so glad other people are slowly reacting to this movie and making positive comments about it

Yeah it definitely wasn't a great movie and I agree it wasn't nearly as good as Atlantis. Still a nice movie to watch with the kids.

People can be so hateful. One of the reasons why I don't go for reviews and just go with what I like. Never looking at homophobic comments

I loved this movie! The animation was superb, the world building was great, the characters are fun - no parents died in this Disney movie!!! The relationships were fun, and some of the most powerful scenes were the 3 generations of Clade men sorting themselves out. Meridian was a joy! And I have a cat with three legs who is every bit as mobile and fearless as Legend!
I LOVE that nobody even blinks over gender and orientation! Outstanding!
A thought about the movie's reception...
Hate has become a fad. It's too easy. Rather than meeting a film where it is, making the choice to suspend disbelief, invest in it, and think about it - which takes work - its easier to dump on it and spout hate. Hate is bizarrely empowering, but it's a toxic, easy empowerment and social media systems make it far too spread.
I too hope that it gains positive following on streaming in the future!
I'm so puzzled by everyone saying it wasn't marketed - I saw trailers for it all over my social media about it, I've been excited for months!
Finally, the board game is lifted from a game called Settlers of Cataan - instantly recognizable by hexagonal shaped, moveable game pieces! ☺️

To me, I think it would've been cool if the turtle was just a TITCH smaller, but it showed there were at least one or two more on the planet!

Finally watched it last night with my kids. Didn't know what to expect due to all the poor reviews. I think it was definitely review bombed. It wasn't a great movie, but it wasn't bad either. It was definitely watchable. Probably on the level of Onward. The twist ending was welcome. My 12 year old declared it MUCH better than Lightyear.

You know, when I saw the movie in theaters, I kept thinking that Avalonia and the village from _Encanto_ were the same place. But then, I saw the big reveal, and I realized that I was wrong.

just watched this movie aaaand i should not be surprised how negative the reactions for it was. it's a shame because the animation is great, the colours are vibrant, and the message (both in the familial and environmental aspect) is touching! but alas, any amount of queer representating is "shoving the gays in our faces!" and "corrupting the children!". hell the first video to show up when i looked up "strange new world disney reaction" is ben shitpiro's video on it. plus disney kinda shot it in the foot by its total lack of marketing. good movie overall, disappointing how the many people are treating it
This is unfortunately my least favorite of the Disney Animated Canon in over a decade. There's too much padding, the lack of a real villain doesn't really work, and it's overall just not that entertaining of a story despite the decent moral message.
That being said, relatively speaking it's merely a mediocre movie compared to many animated flops out there, but I'd still easily pick "Turning Red" or even "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" over this for "Best Animated Film" at the upcoming Academy Awards.
