Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologised to midfielder Kalvin Phillips for not picking him in the Premier League this season - but admits he "struggles to see him" in his starting line-up.
Phillips has yet to start for the treble winners in the Premier League and Champions League this season, limiting his action to just 90 minutes of top-flight football.

Kalvin Phillips didn’t deserve the lack of play he’s gotten at city. He’s a damn good player and an exceptional human being.
There was never a spot in the first place. Pep signed Phillips for the pure and simple reason of making sure no one else got him. Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd were all screaming for a CDM and were all interested in him.
They didn’t buy him so no one else could they brought him because of the homegrown player rule that forces clubs to have 8 English players in there squad.
That’s why they spent 100m on grealish and why united over spent on maguire and mount.
This is what makes English players so over priced due to the demand.

As a Leeds fan I knew it was a mistake for him to go there. We knew he had to leave us but the idea is to further your career. City signed him so no-one else could have him . He's been sat on his arse for 18 months, that's a good chunk of a career. He needs to go to a club that would suit his style and there are plenty of them who would love to sign him. He needs to get out of there in January and go where he'll be appreciated

He was signed because we needed a backup DM because Rodri plays too many minutes and if he’s injured we aren’t the same. For context: Rodri's contract was due to expire in 2024 and City were attempting to get him to sign an extension. So Phillips was earmarked as a backup for if things didn't workout. If he'd stayed fit who knows what system he could have fitted into, but within a week of Phillips signing, Rodri had agreed a 5 year extension and I guess that was a hard one for phillips.
The signing of Nunes was a bad sign for Phillips really. I hope he goes somewhere good where he will get time as he is a really good CDM

Point is or was that the criticism from pundits that our current form may not see us repeat the Treble was not valid as it is early days to judge and we shld'nt be under pressure of protecting last season achievement when we are dealing with or preparing for the next league game. We would still brag winning EPL even after falling out of UCL, bcoz that still makes a record.
