C'mon Piers, in your interview with Chompsky you claim free speech has never been more under attack. You're old enough to remember when Lenny Bruce was arrested for telling jokes.
As a Barca fan, when Zlatan said "I tried to fit in instead of being myself" made much more sense in retrospect. I saw him, he looked like he didn't know what to do, why he was even there, I saw when he scored a goal he celebrated much differently to how he celebrates. I still think Guardiola's stubbornness cost him one of the most clutch strikers, he could've used Zlatan the same way he uses Haaland now.
I think Pep learned his lesson. He also tried to "humble" players, to the point of irrationality, such as not to bring Porsches and Ferraris. Telling people what to drive, which is nonsense. Stupid.
This makes me think of Etoo how pep was blatantly disrespectful towards him but he was scared to be honest with Ibra. Etoo and Ibra both vocal but I think Ibra is more likely to to get into a fight than Etoo which is why I don't get why he chose Ibra. His ego is bigger than Etoo's. How did he not expect them to beef? Both of them are the types to question you and have alot of pride as strikers he wanted them to just do as he says and follow messi's lead but they didn't want to even though they knew messi was the future. That transfer was only beneficial to Etoo and later on Pep
He knows how good he is, same with Ronaldo and they're not afraid to show it...Unlike Messi, as much as I respect his talent he doesn't come close to Ronaldo or Zlatan personality wise.
Zlatan's articulation is really top notch. He presents a real situation without putting down the subject person (pep) from an objective perspective. He does not shy away from conflicts but manages to put it in a mature manner that both can walk away with their own dignity maintained. It is a pure joy to listen to this man speak in his "funny" manner yet can come across as no-nonsense underneath all that humor.
Considering it's not his first language and his English (grammatically) isn't even that good, his articulation is really amazing. It's because he's honest, and clearly has thought about this subject a lot.
Not a mature interview at all. Only the last 2 minutes; until the last 5 seconds where he taps into his immaturity for one last dig. A coach has 2 ways to deal with a player that doesn't fit, attempt to coach him, or make up one's mind that he will not be part of the team and the first window that opens, the player will be gone. From Zatlan's perspective, he is assuming Pep was still thinking Zatlan was in his plans. From Pep's perspective, it was dealt with. Pep has Messi. Didn't need to have Zatlan spoil the dynamic with his big personality.
@@RobertoNardi-b9cBingo. Pep’s accolades prove that teams cannot have super-sized egos to have longevity. This is why teams like PSG and current MU suffer from playing like actual teams. Zlatan is definitely an ego player that couldn’t accept playing as a team player because he only knew how to play as a focal point. Messi was different because Pep could place him anywhere on the field, and he would produce and not say a word. Pep doesn’t care about being the most- liked in the room, he just cares about the functionality of what’s going on. Zlatan is a completely different person that wants to be the most-liked because he wants to prove his worth.
@@otterpoopie that thing with super-sized egos sounds so butthurt lol, midget was always favoured, no matter what, the way pep subbed off haaland vs leibzig shows it perfectly, that's why barkalona made a pathetic and hypocrite move to sell david villa, after that fraud complained about him, yall pessi fans really like eatting sht

Regardless of anything else! Zlatan being able too communicate, articulate and be funny in god knows how many languages is so impressive. He doesnt just speak english. Hes funny, he knows what hes putting across. And he can also do this in italian, spanish, swedish. A very charasmatic intellegent man
I am from Barcelona. When I was a child, my family used to call me "Koeman" because of my blond hair. I've never seen my dad so happy as when FC Barcelona won the Champions League against Sampdoria. My uncle would buy tickets for me, my sister, and my cousins to go to Camp Nou whenever he could. It didn't matter whether we were losing or winning; we would always go to support our team. Blau i Grana is in our DNA. Kubala, Cruyff, Schuster, Maradona, Messi, Xavi Hernández, Iniesta, Kluivert, Rivaldo, Stoichkov, Migueli, Puyol, Ronaldinho, Romario, Valdes, and many more - we loved them all. And of course, Zlatan is also on that list. I remember how excited we were when Zlatan joined the team and how sad we felt when he left. He's such a great player and a wonderful person, despite what some might say.
I’m a Barça fan since the real dream team and you’re right, Laundrup, Romario, Stoichkov and so many others “galácticos”. Later unfortunately bad times came with what I called Barcelanda era with all those Dutch players under Van Gaal including that horrible goalkeeper Jesp. I think nowadays, of course keeping Pep and Xavi distances in perspective, Barça with all this young talents could rise again in Europe, but is hard because the financial aspects should be solved and the whole Negreira noise reverberates every single day trough Marca and As sports journalists makes even harder.
@@S7Vmvif this turns out true messi career would be tarnished slightly and those great barca teams I always thought madrid and barca had more influence in games with refs expecially when Chelsea played them at Stamford bridge in 2009
Yaya, Eto’o said the exact same thing about Pep. Amazing & brilliant tactician, but very conflictual, will keep grudge forever against players, not talk to them, act behind their back and never face to face, until their leave.
As much as I love Pep and everything he’s achieved, you can sort of tell he has a spitefulness in him and would probably sooner avoid conflict and handle it in a sneaky way than confront someone. Just seems like that type of guy
You are already taking sides. You've had one side of the story. If you hear Peps side, you probably may have a different opinion. I'm not saying Zlatan is telling lies. Just that, if Pep was also there, telling his side of the story, maybe we'll have much more insight
@@danielniiaryeeannangpresda3343etoo said the same thing. Henry said the same thing. Zlatan said the same thing. They all played under him at some point. So all of them are liars then?
Here's my view on the Pep/Zlatan situation. Pep was a very young manager then and he probably felt that he had a lot to prove when he was promoted from being the Barca B manager to being the manager of the 1st team in 2008. So, I understand why he was very strict with his players. Pep was also most likely scared of Zlatan and any player who had that "big" personality. Pep, at the time, did not know how to handle big egos other than to let those players leave. Pep has clearly grown over time and I think he would handle Zlatan very differently now to how he did back then. He'd most likely handle Zlatan the same way he handles Haaland.
The issue was that zlatan wanted to be played central while pep was playing messi central. Zlatan felt he was being wasted on the wing, which was true, but he simply just was not as good as messi. Pep was not willing to move zlatan central, and zlatan did not want to play on the wing, so they simply did not work together. If pep got a new messi and haaland did not want to stop playing striker, he would see the bench too. Simple as that.
@@nothanks8368 Not as simple as that, the profile of the league also matters, overtime the game has evolved and rarely will you see successful teams now with false 9.
@@nothanks8368 You are forgetting that Pep has evolved a tactician as well. Back then, Pep used the false 9 tactic in a 4-3-3 formation as his main tactic. But over time, we have seen him use a variety of formations like using two false 9's. Before Haaland came to City and when Aguero left, particularly in the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons, Pep used KDB and Gundogan as his two false 9's in a single game. In big matches like against Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal etc, Pep would often use a two false 9 system. At Barca, Pep used a single false 9 system. So, even if a Prime Messi would have played for Pep's City, pretty sure Pep would use the two false 9 system to accomodate both Messi and Haaland. Like I said, Pep has evolved as a manager. The lack of a Messi type of player in Bayern made Pep evolve his tactics to a great degree which has carried over to his City career.
That's true, right now De Bruyne shouts at Pep but he pretends as if it's nothing. I think Pep has matured as a coach and his player management skills have improved
Right here zlatan still doesn't forgot about pep. I love and respect him, but in every interview that he has there is pep in the discussion. Silent treatment is so unpredictable sometimes because you didn't know from the other side. Zlatan breath all the gases, guardiola is quite beside. But it happens and his carrer in Barcelona is not good, we can see it from Henry and Samuel etos year at camp nou. You see pep and Jose mourino are completely different best managers in football at this context. Jose want to have strong bond and attachment from his players, while you can't get it from pep. I don't see any player who felt sad and cry when he left the club. Which player say " I'm fan of pep" after he hangs up his boots? You can't get it from guardiola. Any time he can leave you heart broken and chaw chaw you are not his choose again.
"He stepped out of the locker. He will not confront me". Lolz. If I had a beef with Zlatan I'd probably not confront him either. But seriously, it was a sad way to treat such a great player.
“When I was front of him, he would walk around me”. Pep was following instructions “ after all, Zlatan said “ I need my space” lol. Massive respect for both of them. Zlatan brought something different to this game. Same with Pep
Zlatan is truly special. Not just a special talent but his personality is truly 1 of a kind. Maybe you love him maybe you hate him, but you have to respect how honest and direct he is. You don’t have to agree with him but respect the fact that he does not try to be like anyone except himself
One of the biggest legends this sport has seen. Nothing to discuss about that. Also interesting that Mourinho could match him, what makes him even more a very special coach.
He is not a legend. He is more known for his personality than for playing incredible football. He was absolutely amazing, no doubt, but still not a legend. Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer, Zidane, Messi, Ronaldo. Call them legends.
@@MistaloverloverYou don't have to be top 10 or top 20 all time to be a legend, that's silly. There's room for more legends in football. I'd say Zlatan is top 50 all time, which alone is enough to make him a legend of the game, but even more important, he was totally unique in playing style. He's one of one, and he gave the game so much over the years.
I think Pep definitely learned though in the personal aspects. He was way too uptight and wound back in his early days. Now he's got players you dont think would fit, but he redesigned the system around Haaland which is a huge surprise.
Haaland is apparently very grounded and humble guy off the pitch though. Its more personalities like Grealish (party guy, gets in trouble off the pitch sometimes) that i think pep is much better at working with now
Ibra described a typical Balkan man/woman attitude toward conflict. Many of us, certainly not all, like to resolve it head on. We don't like loose ends and misunderstandings. This can be perceived as aggression by folks of other cultures and ways of resolving conflict. It's acceptable in the Balkans and many other cultures, but is completely unacceptable in many other cultures as well. I understand both Ibra's and Pep's perspectives. Who's right in this? Neither. There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches to conflict. Ibra should have been more subtle, while Pep should have been more open and communicative. The two opposite approaches collided; hence the conflict.
@@spectaxxx Is the attitude toward conflict the cause of the history of the Balkans, or did the collective trauma acquired throughout that turbulent history shape the attitude toward conflict? You may be smart enough to know the answer. I'm certainly not. Listening to Zlatan, it is clear that it was his personal trauma that shaped his way of dealing with the outside world. Zlatan talks a lot about surviving. Does a person who feels safe and secure think of their life as something that needs to be survived? Zlatan is a scared child that lashed out at any perceived threat. That trauma was transferred onto him by his parents, who were also clearly traumatized. Zlatan had no business throwing items at Pep and intimidating him, but I'm trying to understand and not simply point fingers.
Somehow people hating on zlatan because he's telling the truth 😂 Ya'll should remember that One of the first thing zlatan made sure in this interview was pep is an absolute legend and a winner BTW I prefer mourinho over pep though
That explains why you say what you say. Zlatan is just telling his side of the story. How many players do you think can tell Mourinho how to use them when them when the team is already flourishing. And I bet Mourinho has a lot more players who don't get along with him. If a player threw a training kit box at Mourinho do you think he would get along with that player.
@@ato-blakussam-acquah1557 mourinho has managed a lot more players and more teams, still, pep always showed that he's a control maniac, never letting the players act or player other than what he wants, zlatan says the truth in his way, cancelo or other players shows it also, stop been a subjective barca fanboy if you wanna say something, that fanbase really love been some proud hypocrites
I love Zlatan. The coach was clearly intimidated by his courage and character as a man. It's hard to face the truth but once you can take it, it's a very powerful feeling.
The irony is Samuel Eto'o the player involved in the swap for Zlatan also said the same thing about Pep. How he'd avoid him and never addressed issues or problems.
Because that's what Pep does... if he chooses to move on from a player, he totally ignores him because he is no longer part of his plans.. no point to even talk to him just to get him mad/angry even more.
Being a huge Ibra fan, I feel so sad for his move to Barca. It was the only glitch in his otherwise stellar career. Ibra won Serie A 5 times continuously, being the top scorer twice. He had a good rapport with Mourhino and was the prime man at Inter. Don't know why he moved to Barca. Despite all that, Ibra scored 16 goals that season (in 29 matches) [Same # goals as Suarzez] and scored the winner in El-Classico. Barca won the season with just 3 pts so that goal was crucial. As I always say, Ibra never had a poor season, that's why he is a legend of the game.
I am a total neutral when it comes to this matter. I love both Zlatan as a player and Pep as a coach. I would love to see them both meet and crush their beef once and for all. I do believe Zlatans response in this interview was really strong cause he didn’t really tease Pep this time and pretty much said all he wants is to talk to him. It really depends on Peps response now…
Slatan know he messed at barca, for not being a student, he was at barca; he wasn't at Antwerp, the goat him because they new he was a good player, but his ego never let him to be schooled by the greatest coach ever existed....Mr Pep Guardiola....
See, Pep is very wise. His silent treatment of Zlatan is what saved their situation from probably becoming deadly. Kobe and Shaquille O'Neal had a similar beef that -almost- turned deadly because no one was willing to back down between the two. 😢 Pep dodged a bullet by being silent and escalating things. Pep's like, "You win. Now GTFOH!"
Yep, the past is the past. In hindsight, they both got the best results in their career and both learnt something out of it.. The only people who still cares about this issue are those who dislikes one of them Like Zlatan said here, they both enjoy winning and respects winners. No bad blood, only loose ends. As a man that Pep is now, I'm sure they can get along very well while drinking wine together
I saw Arsenal Vs Barcelona at the Emirates. He didn’t look very lost in that game, scored twice in a game where Messi and Henry didn’t. He was dangerous every time he touched the ball.
But that’s not the point. Zlatan wanted to be well-liked and cared about his image instead of just focusing on the pitch. Zlatan is a phenomenal player that was able to carry teams…but that’s not the philosophy Pep has instilled in his teams; and most importantly, that’s not the function of how a team should work.
Actually what you saw was at a time when Messi still didn't complain, after Messi complained to Pep about him being sacrificed, that time Pep changed Messi's position and Zlatan was being sacrificed. Just imagine the level of player Zlatan was/is that the so called GOAT was also jealous of Zlatan's performances that he had to complain to Pep so that he didn't get sacrificed. Also think about the fact that Messi played alongside many greats like Ronaldinho, Neymar, Suarez, Villa, Henry but he was jealous of that one player Zlatan who made him uncomfortable on the pitch, because during the first half of Zlatan's arrival, Messi couldn't score that many goals because Zlatan was getting all the goals, that's when he understood his career was at stake and he needed to take action immediately so that he doesn't lose credibility.

Another thing is, I do believe Ibra misunderstood the problem with him driving his Ferrari to training. Back then Barcelona had a sponsorship from Audi, and the squad would be given brand new cars at the beginning of the season that they’d be expected to use as transport for club related activities(going to training etc) when Ibra drove his Ferrari to training it resulted in him getting a fine for breach of agreement. This wouldn’t be the first time that would happen, most recently the same would happen to Kingsley Conan in 2020 when he arrived to training in his McLaren instead of the Audi he was given.
You can tell by this video that, Zlatan really loves Pep and would have wanted to achieve great things with him...yet he was his own man and wouldnt take disrespect in that way, which i honestly admire. as I much as love Pep, especially for what he has done for Barcelona, he could have handled the situation more matually but what do i know. we grow every day.... imagine a beast Zlatan with Messi. damn
Pep learned too. Did u see him call out Messi in public or punish Messi. He knew he needed the talent and improved his man management to keep big players on his side. Just a genius coach is not enough, he needs players capable enough to execute his vision

Zlatan "well I think it's time we wrap this up. Piers it's been terrific having you on, all the best and take it easy" *Firm handshake* *Shows him where to walk off*
Wow, can't believe how mature Zlatan has become now. In Ronaldo's interview, he goes on complaining about United, executives, the coach and says he has no respect for him. He was literally looking at everything only from his POV. With Zlatan however, his ability to understand Guardiola's POV and also clearly point out the difference between him as a coach and him as a person, and reiterate that he's still an amazing coach but is just afraid of confrontation is just amazing. Zlatan and Ronaldo are just levels apart when it comes to maturity, knowing how to deal with situations like this. He again goes on to say that if the coach told him straight to his face that he does not want him, he will leave without causing any problems (which is not what Ronaldo did). One thing is for sure, Guardiola (and managers in general) definitely needs to work on confrontation and letting people know when he's offended or doesn't like what someone is doing straight to their face instead of using a right hand guy or just avoiding the problem until it goes away. Edit: Completely agree with you all. Zlatan's interview was long after the incident happened, which was not the case with Ronaldo. I guess the lesson we all learn from this is to not react to situations that are not in our favour immediately (because then emotions take over) but step away mentally, take some time, calm down, let the emotions settle down, and then handle it sensibly. Especially in relationships. Thank you for pointing this out in your replies. Hope you all have a great day!
Zlatan is so calm and appears mature here cause it 15yrs since it happened. Time has passed, emotions have gone down, no anger..etc and he has also become more older. With ronaldo he did the interview when things are thick, emotions high..etc two different scenarious...maybe in the future both Erick ten hag and ronaldo would look back and see they could have handled it better
Oh please, he ain't being mature. He is certainly putting on a show for viewers because he's now retired and can't proof nothing no more. Zlatan will always be zlatan. Remember, lions don't compare themselves with humans😂
Zlatan has a large personality and is extremely direct. Some people may find that intimidating. And I think that’s what transpired with Pep, who probably found him intimidating so he took the easy way out of just not communicating instead of confronting Zlatan heads on
Yes imo it was weird, I know that Ibra was at his peak back then but so was Eto’o. Eto’o was one of the main players in 2009 Barca, a team that broke all kinds of records and is probably the best team in history of football. Really stupid to get rid of him after a season like that.
I think the main reason is that Pep doesn't understand how to convey to Ibra, that Messi is the main star at Barcelona, without causing conflict in the team. So what he did was move the conflict between himself and Ibra. In the end, this is all just a matter of conflict management and Pep was still quite young at that time. Maybe now he would use a different approach in dealing with problems like this.
I also love being told the truth directly, don’t try to sweet talk me or avoid telling that truth. I am capable of handling any truth any-day and time. Zlatan, I agree with you 100%. You are forever a football legend❤

It is a pure joy to listen to this man speak in his "funny" manner yet can come across as no-nonsense underneath all that humor.
Considering it's not his first language and his English (grammatically) isn't even that good, his articulation is really amazing. It's because he's honest, and clearly has thought about this subject a lot.
such a mature interview. Things happen and people grows
Zalatan happens thing grows
Pep didn’t grow 😂

They are all like that the Spanish. Cowards when it comes to confrontation.
As much as I love Pep and everything he’s achieved, you can sort of tell he has a spitefulness in him and would probably sooner avoid conflict and handle it in a sneaky way than confront someone. Just seems like that type of guy
Because niggaz like that get their ass beat if they confront their problems.
I agree.
You are already taking sides. You've had one side of the story. If you hear Peps side, you probably may have a different opinion. I'm not saying Zlatan is telling lies. Just that, if Pep was also there, telling his side of the story, maybe we'll have much more insight

@@lordpeterturbo5216 Henry? Eei massa stop this
Here's my view on the Pep/Zlatan situation.
@@nothanks8368
Not as simple as that, the profile of the league also matters, overtime the game has evolved and rarely will you see successful teams now with false 9.
@@lukmanaliyu7386Except in the case where that false nine is Lionel Messi.
*The ending, Zlatan just being Zlatan* 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Very matured response, no emotions involved.
Ibra previously threatened to beat Guardiola up in public. No wonder he was avoiding him.
He distinguished at the start between the coach and the person and he gave the his honours, his troubles were with the personality
He doesn't have to like his personality that's the beauty of the world.
But as a coach, pep should of acted like it instead of acting like a little wimp. ibra was so clutch in the field for Barca

Sergio Aguero also came good
Haaland is apparently very grounded and humble guy off the pitch though.

Of course, an Indian who still salty that his beloved Penaldo, the tap-in merchant, didn't win the World Cup while Messi did, is making up some nonsensical story to hide the fact that Zlatan was outshined by Messi in every possible way. It's not Messi's fault that Zlatan struggled, and Messi's left foot alone is lightyears better than Zlatan's entire career. There's a reason why he has ZERO UCL trophies. He is extremely over-rated, just like Camelnaldo.
It's just that Zlatan is still salty that he wasn't worshipped by Pep and Barca fans. Both Penaldo and Zlatan are egomaniacs who can't stand it when people don't worship the ground they walk on.
You can tell by this video that, Zlatan really loves Pep and would have wanted to achieve great things with him...yet he was his own man and wouldnt take disrespect in that way, which i honestly admire. as I much as love Pep, especially for what he has done for Barcelona, he could have handled the situation more matually but what do i know. we grow every day.... imagine a beast Zlatan with Messi. damn
Nobody loves Zlatan more than...Zlatan...Top player, top guy, deserves his place in the history books.
9:27 when he says that he sounds like haaland
you can see the anger and pain in zlatan’s eyes when he speaks about this issue.
Pep learned too. Did u see him call out Messi in public or punish Messi. He knew he needed the talent and improved his man management to keep big players on his side.
Just a genius coach is not enough, he needs players capable enough to execute his vision
Exactly, De Bruyne shouted at Pep back and forth during the game as well, if it was the Pep back in the old barcelona days, Pep will bench De Bruyne for sure
@@boogerking2185 He sat him on the bench after that game for a couple of games, though.
KDB isn't a Zlatan, though.
Zlatan at the time was a bigger name than most on the Barcelona squad and the man was bold! Pep couldn't deal with that at the time!
Avoidance personality trait vs Straight forward personality trait. The player felt the coach was playing games around him to flex is power, the coach felt the player was challenging his authority.
Well we all know how that worked out Messi vs Zlatan! Pep to the🌍🌎
That last line is pure gold, "he should run away"
Zlatan:he shouldn’t tell me the problem
13years later still crying about it
the interviewer asked him the question, what else do you expect?
Guess you havent been to an interview before
Bro he was asked a question 😂 he know martial arts can still play and has balls of steel .. no championships will make pep HALF the man zlatan is in american if you cant look in my eyes your no man. In war who would you trust ?
I swear man. I love Zlatan but enough already and I know he was asked a question here but even without this he has talked about it so many times.
At this point the only people who have cried more than Zlatan are fans of those whore club from London.
i've had trainers like that who would never tell you to your face what the problem is, because they are cowards in themselves and shy of conflict. you just have to avoid those types, you can't win anything, you just have to feel sorry for them, because they can't live life to the full, even if they are successful
Zlatan "I Parked my Ferrarri outside his office"
Pep "More than you believe"
@acmilancurvasudlet these pep cowards talk 😂 pep couldnt even look him in his face to walk around and hide in your own locker room is hella cowardly
Edit:
Completely agree with you all.
Hope you all have a great day!
but it's Ronaldo's ignorance which makes him so great in football. Its a double edged sword maturity on the professional football stage
Good point but I do not think the two scenarios are the same.
Ronaldo lost a child you fool. You think you'd be lovey dovey for a coach who tried to put the game over the life of your child? I'd have said worse.
That last line was beast mode 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Zlatan is hella wise
Zlatan has a large personality and is extremely direct. Some people may find that intimidating. And I think that’s what transpired with Pep, who probably found him intimidating so he took the easy way out of just not communicating instead of confronting Zlatan heads on
Zlatan describes himself as a Ferrari, but getting him for Eto is still one of the worst player swaps in history
That's a fair trade bro come on. Zlatan has the same abilities as Samuel
@@GenuineRSABarca gave up Eto’o plus like 20 million though. Awful trade for Barcelona.
Yes imo it was weird, I know that Ibra was at his peak back then but so was Eto’o. Eto’o was one of the main players in 2009 Barca, a team that broke all kinds of records and is probably the best team in history of football. Really stupid to get rid of him after a season like that.
@@Igor19485
2009 Champions League dosent count biggest roobery in football history
Zlatan was better at the time but Pep changed his position and made him look bad
Zlatan : I'm a lion
Pep : that is true, still a cat
A cat that can kill you haha
I also love being told the truth directly, don’t try to sweet talk me or avoid telling that truth. I am capable of handling any truth any-day and time.
Zlatan, I agree with you 100%.
You are forever a football legend❤
If he is the best coach, let him go to Luton or Burnley n get it on top of the table
i know whoever you think is the best wouldnt do it either
Brian Clough approves of this comment
Like Messi and Ronaldo should go to stoke city to prove they are the best dumb comment.
