Has Skoda gone TOO POSH? 2024 Skoda Superb review

- The 2024 Skoda Superb is the brand's new flagship estate car, and frankly it's one of the best estate cars you can buy right now. Join me for a probably too in-depth look at its boot-space, back-seat accommodation, MAGIC HEADRESTS, engine choices, infotainment, SMARTKNOBS and more. It's a doozy, and potentially one of the best cars of the year.

Skoda is the thinking man's Audi and the new old Volvo at the same time.
Oooo a boring man’s dream, I shall probably treat myself and keep it a long time.
That is if you hate yourself. If you loved yourself you'd get a stress free Toyota. In all fairness Skoda did a great job with the new Superb but reliability is a big question mark.
@@arvan_gurjar Im no škoda fan but the brand has always been known for reliability. I suppose you do have a point now that they cost as much or maybe even more than toyotas.
@@DADDA The Toyotas have 10 year old tech in them though. For some folks that's good for some that's bad.
I’ve been scouring RUclips for inspiration on my next car. I’m a 39yo dad and this channel offers the most entertaining and informative content, sorry Matt Watson. Keep them coming bud, great vid 🤙🏼
Thank you - you're too kind! -From a 38yo dad trying to do RUclips!
Matt Watson is not doing reviews for dads but for schoolboy teenagers because that's where his mental age got stuck.
He is a damn good professional in reviewing cars though. His team runs the cars through X-Rays before each review
@@menifo4334 I wouldn't say he's mentally stuck there, it's not his call. The managing team is only chasing views and money, that's why carwow degraded into quarter mile race channel. Used to be good, then turned to shit.
Some say I used to work at carwow too!@@menifo4334
i can see the carwow DNA@@TimRodieDrivesStuff
Brilliant a diesel in 2024, that’s superb! What a great practical car with knobs and buttons that even JLR have ditched now. There’s never been a better reason to buy one! My French outlaws have a a yeti L&K and won’t sell it. It’s done 250K kms and just keeps going!
Great work Skoda 👍
For the life of me...don't understand why North America abandoned Estates (station wagons) in favour of SUVs. Larger, heavier, use more fuel and (generally) more expensive to maintain. Instead of converting all those SUVs to much heavier more expensive (rare metal) EVs with low ranges...Give us more AWD TDI estate choices please!
There are many reasons, but mainly its the fact, that they are not classified as cars, but as light trucks, therefore they dont have to adhere to stricked emission standards. There are many videos on youtube about this, for example from Not just bikes, or CityNerd..but basically, emission standards, and marketing. The car industry have persuaded americans it is the best car to have. And since they are on the roads, being in a smaller car is not safe for you, so they think they are safer in a 3 ton tank (which they are, but just because other people drive SUVs). It is really funny, since they talk about saving climate, and electric cars, yet the SUV is one of the biggest crimes against enviroment you could ever think of. If they drove cars like us in europe, with consumption around 4-5l/100km, it would do a lot.
It's filling the gap that VW once occupied with the Passat. In fact imo, Skoda are actually making better cars overall than VW are.
Skoda just keep on getting better, and doing things right. VW in the hand, have 'dropped the ball' and you can see this in their cars now.
This Octavia estate knocks it out of the ball park, and leaves the brand new Passat looking like a damp squib. Which it is.
I was in-between polo and fabia, fabia came 2k cheaper, with rear disc brakes unlike the polo, with 6 speed manual 110HP instead of a 5 speed 95hp (polo) and it has slightly more space, a golf sized boot and it turns sharper than the polo, infant it's the 2nd best in the elk tests when it comes to it's segment 2nd only to fiesta, it's that's rally DNA I suppose
I'm delighted to hear you're still singing their praises. In the last 6 months or so I've agonised over whether to get one, big retirement treat from me to me, watched many youtube videos and your last one of the Superb Estate pushed my decision over the line and I picked one up just 2 weeks ago on 1st March. 2023 model, 73 plate SE L 197/198hp.
Totally delighted with it.
Even seeing the 2024 model I'm happy with mine, I don't like the screens that sit out proud of the dash, mine is nicely recessed.
My boot has 660 litres so I don't think I really need 690! I'm in my 60's so I don't need lowered suspension etc, though on the odd occasion I want to give it some, it goes like shit off a shovel.
Just done one mpg check so far, and it returned 52.2 in mixed driving. My mechanic friend says that will likely increase as the car beds in.
To those who are on the fence, I say just go and get one. You will NOT be disappointed.
Good choice! I'm a huge superb fan. Only gripe I have is how they are now priced to match their quality😂. Been driving them since 2011 and got ribbed for ages but once people got in them they were all shocked at the quality, especially for the cost.back then
I'm glad you're enjoying it! It's one of the best-kept secrets of the car world, I feel...
That 2L petrol is a very decent engine. 52mpg is really good, doubt it'll go any higher tbh.
@@TsLeng Mine is diesel. Filled the tank yesterday and did the sums... 53.6mpg.. hope it gets better but if it doesn't I'm totally delighted with mpg anywhere near these numbers.
@@davidrussell7183 ah... If it's the diesel, I guess it can get more.
Forgot there is a 190hp diesel too.
I have a 2016 petrol 4x4 that will get 45mpg if I drive like a HGV. That's the most I can eke out of it
Tim, you need to set the sat nav for the UK, it's coming up with Portugal which I guess is the factory default. It's nice to see someone get excited about an "ordinary" car. I think I would settle for the new Octavia estate (VRS obviously). You've done well this week since you have picked your perfect sports saloon and now you favourite family lugger - well done.
I like big boots and I can not lie 😂
A superb review... I have a 2017 L&K Combi , similar spec to this one. Mine has 380,000 kilometers on it and looks like and drives like a new car . I will probably purchase the new one
The fact it hasn’t been tested at the Nurburgring means I’m interested 😅
Some owners will still take it there...Like me😂
Result: survived, really fun. Recommend
Love the review! ❤
Great review as always, mate.
Good to know that us tall blokes can drive these without crushing our small children in the back seat.
Looking forward to checking these out when they land in the English colony of Australia.
Firstly, thanks for giving us Bluey. Secondly, you're spot on - I've got an Alfa Stelvio at the moment and whenever I turn the ignition off my seat slides backwards and crushes my 3 year old… probably need to turn that particular feature off in the menus!
@@TimRodieDrivesStuff Bluey. That old thing!? Just something I threw together!
Yeah, the whole crushing thing doesn't really go down well with the rug rats....or the partner.
I’d heard Margate has had a refresh, looks like they’ve done a good job
Wait until you see what's planned for the model year 25 update! Some new swings.
Love a Superb - on my second. Love the interior design but think the facelift pad previous model looked sharper. Desirable all the same though.
Excellent review, I like your style very much 🙂
Thank you!
I would go with the smaller display all day long!
A stylish and sensible choice all around it seems
What a pleasant car. The Iced Tea Yellow colour is so nice as well.
scout version of this would be perfect
Review was good. Car was good. I’ve subbed. 🎉
Thank you kindly!
Great review, thanks. I have been looking for a new diesel vehicle and this seems to tick all the boxes. Will check one out at my Skoda dealer.
Fancy Ramsgate for a holiday now…😀❤️👍
The custard tarts were great. Sorry, I mean jellied eels
Used to have an SE Executive TDi Estate a while back. Have to say best car I’ve ever owned, amazing comfort and performance and of course the space is fantastic. Unfortunately it was stolen and never seen again!
Surprised to see an english review on a czech car with czech plates haha, really cool (probably only to me since i'm czech, but oh well :)
Great review!
... and this review was made in Guincho (Cascais) Portugal! 😁
How did you fix your tablet on that dashboard? Oh wait, was that the factory-fitted, cost-effective infotainment screen?
A cool, pleasant and well rounded review, nevertheless. In fact, I've just subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
The tablet bolted on the dash is par for the course sadly.... the real atrocity is the design of the instrument cluster-f#$! ... not sure i could bear to look at thing the whole time.... why? Skoda, why?
I moved to the States from Europe like 10 years ago, therefore didn't really keep up with the latest designs from brands not sold here. But when I saw this interior it shocked me. Probably the ugliest most hideous one I've seen so far. And with current trends of bolting a discount electronics store pad on top of the dash is saying a lot.
PHEV is an attractive proposition with the longer range. Has to be competitive in price though. Warranty or did I miss that?
I'm definitely getting old. Sat here on the sofa, with my two dogs, looking at a Skoda video, thinking '"I'll have one of them". I'd take the big boot, good economy, acres of passenger space and comfort, plus head up display, over a super car any day. Well except the 2 days of the year it's A) sunny and B) I've got the day to myself, then I'd have the super car.
Yeah, I'm getting old in exactly the same way. Give me comfort, good mpg, big boot and Apple CarPlay...
Very entertaining reviewer. Great car.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
:) pretty nice interior, with proper buttons and knobs.
I'm kinda in progress of deciding which car to ask from company to get. Superb is on the list. But I think G31 LCI 530d is better value retaining car even though it would be used one. And more of drivers car. Any opinions about G31 LCI vs New superb?
Dad’s got the old 280, it’s my favourite car to drive if I’m pretty much only on the motorway.
Would still stick to my E39 for twistier roads, but these Skodas are suuuuuuexcellent
The boot cover is really new and it closes electronicaly with the boot.
This can even be seen in the video 😀
It feels like Skoda could easily occupy the 'posh but understated' niche that Saab used to call their own, especially if they continue to make some discreet but properly quick ones. I'm sure there's plenty of folk out there with money, but for whom Merc and Audi are a little too shouty.
Thanks for the review. Central armrest with height adjustment was much better in mk3. Sad to see it gone.. Were there air outlets in new armrest and glovebox? And also new instrument cluster looks so ugly. In central column there should be place for two smartphones side by side. Steering wheel should be changed to a modern (hexagonal-ish) design. I didn't like that the gear selector moved to stering column and thus everything moved to the left stick, especially new tiny wiper control. Central air vents and the grill design to the right side don't look nice. Mk3 interior design was way better.
Agreed, that dash would bother, no annoy me. Sticks out either side. WTF? Looks like the mother of afterthoughts.
I don’t even have felt lined doors in my brand new BMW 330e Msport Pro estate.
BMWs have been doing a lot of cost cutting lately. Even the build quality is nothing like it was 20 years ago.
It's brilliant the way Skoda concentrate on small practicalities. They have got a bit pricey, however, but the Superb is still fantastic value compared with its VW and Audi stablemates. PS isso não é Ramsgate! 😆
It's genuinely refreshing to be driving a car that's got a bit of new tech, but isn't trying to be clever/screen heavy for the sake of looking 'modern'.
@@TimRodieDrivesStuff They do seem to get the balance right -- less is more.
PHEV version at 100km would take care of 95% of my driving needs - can it run in Electric only mode ?
Hes filming this in my Home country, portugal ❤
And a beautiful country it is!
Hello, thats a 60,000 euros car in portuguese market, sure thing, great review, thanks
Looking at the sea behind you. Is it Canvey Island?
Squint and you can see the pier at Southend!
Superb cabin looks superb
We have 2 Skodas.
My wife’s has a superb estate 250k on it and other than a passenger door harness fault(VW design issue).
Mine a OCTAVIA 100k on it.
Both 4th, fully loaded.
Keep thinking of getting something far more expensive, but it’s a car it gets me from A-B so why change and throw money away.
I’m 6 foot 3 and leg room in both is great for both driver and second row in both cars.
Not the most stylish cars in the world, but it’s a car.
Unsure what's Skoda's plan with the Superb e.g. is it only family oriented or will it keep the "sporty" look as it always had? If that's the case only let down for my taste is the DSG lever on the steering wheel....not sporty. I know you would tell me that Merc has it for years but not the cup of tea for everyone. Let's not simplify everything, let's keep the "gear change feel" on the central console.
I like Merc but will never buy one just for the automatic lever.
Thx for reading my post.
does 1.5tsi have dq200 or dq381?
I don't think there's such thing as 'too posh' in today's car market, everyone has gone into full consumerism, becoming 'SUV-on-Finance' types and the bigger and flashier the better. Gone are the days of being proud of your humble Polo for getting you from A to B. Everything is now built for style over longevity because of how prevalent the finance market is
According to the statistics, contrary to conventional wisdom though, the longevity is also getting better.
I certainly don't think cars rust like they used to (for the most part, anyway!)@@piotrwieczorek6588
I'm big fan of the Superb Estate. Best estate car out there. I have a Mk3 2016 L&K 280 4 x 4 Estate with 360bhp (a real Wolf in Sheep's clothing) & had a Mk2 170 Diesel before that. All new cars are too expensive which is why I buy mine at 2-3 years old for half the price when new & keep them for at least 6-8 years.
Not sure about the front end styling of this new Superb & the lack of a full EV or a 300+bhp petrol detract from it's overall appeal somewhat. That said at least it's got buttons & a rear wiper which seem to be lacking on so many new hatches, estates & SUV's.
One to watch as a 2nd hand buy in a few years time.
Yeah, think you’re right there..
Looks pretty good to me - well worth a punt!
Crass and terrible metaphors....love it
I live to serve 🫡
This is what the new 5-series touring should have been. BMW, take note. The new škoda interior give me Ferrari 599 vibes in a good way. As a Czech national I am proud how far škoda has come with the release of this model.
I don’t know why noise is ignored in these reviews. It’s a very important factor for long range driving.
In a time with 1.0L 3 piston petrol engines, i think this car with a 2.0 diesel and 193 hp, it's perfect between sportiness and economy.
I got the 1 liter 3 pot Octavia after test driving the estate. Was really surprised. Great car and engine doesn't feel under powered at all (unless you want to drive like Colin McRae)
There are a lot of things that are just right about this car. Well done Skoda you sensible lot
isso não é ramsgate você careca tolo
Why are Skoda's so expensive now a days? It's crazy!
Because it's a quality car, that's why!!!!!
It's cheaper than the Passat by a little bit, and by all accounts from journos on the launch, they'd have the Skoda.
Even passat in space at the moment :DX
Dacia has taken the value segment…
I don't think any think is cheap unless you want a dacia😅
Would consider a new superb estate but not in L & K spec. I bet the sportline spec will look good.
L&K is a rare beast and pretty punchy in the price department - I'd go SE L with the 150hp diesel.
Headup display in the windshield.. first time in a skoda.. my octavia would disagree.. climate buttons i do envy
You're absolutely right, I forgot the Octavia got it too.
I’ve got a 2018 L&K estate. (40k). Love it. I’ve been waiting for the new model but here’s my issue.
Value of mine px £15k ish
Price of a new one after equivalent extras £50k probably.
I have to fork out £35k … I’m struggling to justify that.
Question, is it that much better than mine?
There's a simple answer to that… and it's no, not really!
Couple of years and second hand one then…🤔
Skoda really look good these last years, and people seem to buy them a lot. I especially like the Kodiaq. I just wander about the quality, especially on the long run. Does anyone have experience with it? I used to have a Felicia in 1998-99, and the quality wasn't the best. It would break down often. On the other hand, it was a cheap car, and this was more then 25 years ago.
Well yeah, there is absolutely no ambiguity about favouring big boots. Is it? I do appreciate them to on estates and at the beach. No American car reviewer could do that pun with their ridiculous "trunks". I hate to admit this but this review is funnier and provides more insight than Matt Watson on CARWOW.
Erm.... without sounding weird and a little creepy may I say you are rather good at this car video stuff!
That's not weird or creepy! It's kind. And there's always room for more of that on YT! Thank you sir.
When compared to the 2023 model L&K, I personally feel that the interior (dashboard) made a step back. It looks less "premium"...
Still prefer the smaller integrated LCD display in the outgoing model. Having a PC monitor on top of the dash is not my club of tea. I am on my second Superb (2023 SE L) DSG Diesel. The first one was a Superb Elegance DSG Diesel (2015 Euro 5). Had it for 8 years with no issue what so ever. An absolute reliable workhorse for long distance travel. Thanks to Mr. Khan, I had to change from Euro 5 to Euro 6 else I would still be driving the 2015 Superb. It is just superb.
The stop start feature should be something you have to turn on not off every time you turn the car on😡
You can get it disabled. Not expensive nowadays.
3:41 it opens/closes automatically when the boot is opened/closed.
I realised this after I filmed it (as usual…!)
The real HUD is not the first on a Škoda - it’s been on the Octavia for years.
Same for the sleep rear headrests by the way.
Yup, I forgot about that. I hadn't seen the headrets before!
Why is it a left hand drive in Margate?
It's the sunny bit of Margate. The bit next to Spain.
Skoda smashing it
Only thing they could of done better is instrument cluster looks like it’s stuck on, not integrated properly. 🫤
The trend of sticking an iPad on the dash is terrible. That is what it looks like, and what BMW is doing is even worse.
Afterthought. I think it’ll really bug me looking at those top corners sticking out.
Looking at the stupid looking dial cluster tablet thing, unadjustable armrest and most buttons disappearing, I'm keeping my 2023 Superb
I mean, I definitely wouldn't sell a one-year-old car for one!
It's a shame they ditched the manual option in the new Superb
Did I hear ramsgate mentioned 👀👀😂
I'm not sure how the gear selector will work if you drive on hand controls 🤔🤷🏻♂️ I've got a 2020 L&K 2.0 Estate on hand controls and absolutely love it... Maybe I'll need a mutation and grow an extra arm for this one 😆🤣😆
That's a very good point!
Locations for driving review were really confusing. Looked like driving on the right in Ramsgate and Margate. Strange Portuguese clip for the motorway - then the last comment Isso não é Ramsgate. Really weird - there must be a reason for that.
Hahaha! Ramsgate was looking oddly Portuguese for most of this
Wow T-Shirt weather 😂Škoda are really pulling out the stops 😮
The sleep pack seem like it’s designed, so Dads can take roundabouts at inappropriate speeds, without chucking the little angel’s heads about.
Han💤 device?
I read that as Hans Zimmer device. There's a crossover viral video the world needs
Most people who "need" an "SUV" really just need this
Great car but it’s only going to have 2.0 under the bonnet at best. Needs the V6 back up front to feel genuinely luxurious
Haha, I once drove the Mk2 Superb with the 3.6 V6… around Rockingham race track. Best day ever
I went to the dealership planning by something similar (2.8 V6?) but ended up down the road with a C43 because of the 2.0 thing.
in india the sedan version costs usd$72500.
Oh, I'm pleasantly surprised the Skoda marketing people invited you to Portugal to test the new Superb! It's pronounced differently - KLaemaenT, not the weird French way (we prefer the British over the French mostly for your humour - haha; the UK ambassador is btw one of the most likeable ambassadors posted in Prague & his team just won some social media award; well, anyways). The design is not as bad as the new Kodiaq' where they dropped the ball with designing the D-pillar (proč/why/WARUM?!). Sadly, the driver display with humongous bezels dictated by all VW to all its brands is there - the most likely candidate for replacement in a year or so.
What really makes me sad, though is what they did to the shape of the car in the pursuit of aerodynamics: they got rid of the "beefed up" sides! That's what made the Superb, that's the most lovable design thingy on the outgoing model. Now, the new one looks almost exactly like the Passat, rather dull, like a basketball player's coffin on wheels, for G's sake.
However, there will be a lot of these on the roads in Czechia. Skoda is known for great fleet/corporate pricing. Every sales guy has an Octavia, and every middle manager has a Superb as part of their remuneration package, as it's substantially cheaper to give them a car than to give them a raise. Therefore, if you do end up buying a left-side Superb, you could sell it on the second market in Czechia in three years with only a reasonable drop in price. Skodas retain their prices very well in Czechia.
Love Skoda; not sure about the BMW- esque front grill however;
It's more bmw than bmw these days. Which means it's elegant.
Yeah, I'd argue Skoda are stealing the nice bits of design that BMW don't do anymore
@@SebastianLarsen
No Sportline trim level anymore? That's a shame, not everyone thinks that good looking equals chrome'y & fancy ( = Laurin & Klement)
It’s coming later!
@@TimRodieDrivesStuff Ah, superb!
what price is the phev
TBC sadly!
We've had 5 VWs over the past 20 years....but it's getting harder to justify buying any more, when today's Skodas are just as attractive and more reliable. VAG need to think what they're doing here !
I was with other journos at dinner last night (I only filmed this yesterday afternoon) and none of us could really think of a VW they'd buy over an equivalent Skoda.
I'm changing my car in 6 months, and I do like the look of the new VW Tiguan - but I reckon if I wait 12 months the Skoda equivalent will be out and be £7,000 cheaper ! @@TimRodieDrivesStuff
It’s the same MQB platform and engine from the VW how can it be more reliable when it’s just a badge engineering exercise.
Are you sure that’s not ramsgate ?
This car needs a sport suspension and big wheels to look good.
Why in 2024 are manufacturers still just sticking a screen on the vents. It looks so cheap. Is it really that hard to integrate it properly?
No manual gearbox = I don't want one. I have the MK 3 AWD 2.0 TDI & it's amazing.
Superbs have always been perfect taxi cars
And Dad taxis!
No, its just to expensive now
Skoda elegance
I feel that the superb already a class leader has nothing to prove.
The few areas where this car could be improved has now been done with the auto selector having been removed from the floor.
The centre armrest should have been left alone as you say.
The touch screen is l feel an intrusion into the cabin space unlike say that of the old Columbus system which blended nicely into the dashboard.
Most car makers including Skoda leave out the most obvious areas where improvements need to be made, where little or no tech, need be involved, sun visors, which have remained unchanged for decades are now not even mentioned in reviews yet the number of collisions caused by the very low winter sun is on the increase .
Fiat in an ancient 1800 model had visors contained within the roof lining above the windscreen but also the driver and passenger doors which was a step in the right direction but then disappeared , visors need to be rethought, and any available tech. applied to them.
Externally the superb is looking dull and unexciting and needs a rethink , it is taking on the look of a Mondeo.
Come on Skoda do not lose touch!
8:29 Not powered by diesel !😂
Windmill power!

That's not the UK, it's not raining🤔
Has Skoda gone TOO POSH?
No, but too expensive for sure.
Front grill "borrowed" from BMW?
From the good days of BMW design, I think
Over £47k for a Skoda diesel estate these days?!
Even over £36k for the basic one without the toys? o_O
I dunno, the £36k one gets massage seats which seems pretty good to me....
@@TimRodieDrivesStuff LOL Fair enough!
I'm 10yrs older than you, & so my imprint of Skoda comes from a time of no-nonsense cars that most folk could afford to buy. This seems way more "aspirational", & at £47k would be going on a lease so you never actually own the thing & banksters take a bite out of you along the way.
Still, if you do proper mileage I can appreciate the value in massaging seats regardless! :)
The 2015 model looked the best, than the 2019 facelift, and this 2024 model, 2015 model stood out, the newer versions, have become dull.
Forget electric,,,massive kick back here in Ireland over ev's curiosity of nadia from Ashford motors,,she spat truths
The L&K version is very pricey (compared to other Superb trims) so I am not convinced that this was the appropriate version to do any comparisons with. The L&K version probably is too posh…. Others much less so.
That’s a fair point! It’s the age old case of being slightly rushed for filming on a car launch. I basically have a choice of taking a top spec one and showing all the available bells and whistles, or taking a more affordable one and making you imagine the trinkets!
A GWM Haval H6 Ultra has all the tech, two years ago and the dashboard looks very similar.
I'm afraid I cannot share your excitement for a car that you will be hard-pressed to know if it's the newest model or the previous one. Korean's facelifted versions have more prominent visual enhancements and changes than this 'new' model. I love and respect the brand but they seem to have run out of innovative ideas when it comes to design.
