  • @angushogg3667

Thanks Tomas for this excellent video. I currently have my second Skoda Superb, in which I do an enormous mileage (around 35,000 miles/56,000 km a year). Overall they have both been great cars, but they have been let down by very poor software. I am looking to buy another new car in the next year, but have been concerned about buying another Skoda due to the ongoing software issues. When I bought my current car with the virtual cockpit in 2021, it was awash with software problems. These varied from the satnav wandering off after half-an-hour into the middle of nowhere, through to dropping phone calls mid-conversation all the time. Also the predictive adaptive cruise control would just randomly apply the brakes in the middle of the motorway as it thought there was a change in the speed limit! Then there was (and still is) the issue of the various assist systems just switching off at different times as you drive along and for no apparent reason. Also, a couple of times, the satnav has stopped providing interactive traffic information for maybe a week at a time and then randomly starting working again. The biggest and most frustrating problem was a crazy issue that took over two years to fix involving the 'Travel Assist' system experiencing random failures which resulted in constant warnings as you drove along with a constant litany of aural 'bings' - sometimes as many as thirty times in ten minutes. It nearly drove me insane! Mercifully, that is now fixed.
In small steps over the last two years or so, Skoda have gradually addressed themselves to this multiplicity of software issues, but they are still not fully there yet. This latest Superb looks great, but is very high tech - something Skoda have at times appeared unable to manage, frankly. Getting Skoda to reply to queries about problems with the software is almost impossible. I often look at car reviews, but they rarely cover the issues that real owners face over any period of time. I will definitely go for a test drive on this new model when it appears in showrooms, but I will need to be very convinced that Skoda have a handle on the technical aspects. These 'smart dials' look a good idea, but they need to work very well, without a glitch. Also, the infotainment system is potentially very complex and it has taken Skoda around two years to remove all the bugs that were there on my current model with the virtual cockpit and Columbus navigation system. As it is, they still have problems with very slow-to-start software and very limited map updates for the satnav (gps). In theory they update the map every month, but nowhere I ever go through ever seems to actually get updated! New roads, housing estates etc are way behind the 'competition' in the form of Apple Maps or Google Maps. Where I live was built over a year ago and is still not on the map yet. Furthermore the algorithms used to calculate delays or arrival times on the internal satnav are very poor compared to Waze, Google Maps or Apple Maps. I travel a lot around the south of England and in Europe and am continually in heavy traffic. Due to the limitations of the onboard nav system, you have to have a mobile phone with one of these Apps running in the background to ensure you are taking the correct route, particularly if there are diversions, as the internal satnav routing is never as good. Also, the Apps they provide (News, Weather etc) are embarrassingly slow to load (sometimes in excess of two minutes for each one) and are effectively useless. Furthermore, the voice activation for things like making phone calls, setting temperatures etc is absolutely useless - it rarely works and I have stopped using it. The predictive adaptive cruise controls still occasionally just puts the brakes on for no good reason. In summary then, this new Superb looks fabulous, but the jury is very much out for me over whether all the features will actually work day-to-day. When I go for my test drive, I have no doubt the car will be a wonderful driving experience - I take that as read. It looks beautiful inside and out, but that is not really my concern. My attention will be on the software and electronics to make absolutely sure they actually work as promised.

Nice-looking car. Time will tell what VAG has to do to avoid Superb demolishing Passat's market share. Let's be honest, new Passat is just a copy of Superb (not the other way around). As a weird fact, why rear climate controls need to lag one generation back in VAG cars for years now? Nevertheless, this is my current favorite VAG model by far. Will be eagerly waiting for a drive review.

Really dont like the front… looks very strange but thats one sexy fastback… In grey its just amazing.
Inside in brown reminds me more of BMW than Volkswagen and thats a good thing. Looks great

The Ice tea yellow is quite a good fit for the superb. Initially I thought they revived the old Sahara beige which looks kind of similar.

The hatch trunk on a sedan is absolutely fantastic. I first had a car with one with the Seat Toledo and I can’t really get to part ways with it for a newer Jetta or Passat. Škoda really gets my purchase here.

Great review! Clean and objective enough video! One major question here, but also on your kodiaq video. What is the towing capacity of the 1.5 mild hybrid and the plug in hybrid? In the Netherlands we do not get the 2 liter petrol or 2 liter diesel anymore, thus towing capacity of the smaller engines are important. Thanks!

An excellent review as always. The fact that they have reverted to dials on the centre console to control the heating and air-conditioning is a very good thing. Hopefully the remainder of the VW group will revert to dials as opposed to the ludicrous and dangerous configuration of having these controls within the infotainment system. the programmable nature, particularly of the middle dial is an excellent innovation, I would very much like one of these new vehicles.

Regarding “hatchback vs fastback” in the UK. About ten years ago I had a Skoda Rapid hatch which I’d have argued was a fastback as most people assumed it was a saloon until I opened the boot. The irony of that car was that it actually had more space than the combi version, which in the UK they called a fastback…

Waiting for full review, it looks gorgeous. I live in Czechia and Slovakia so I see Superbs everywhere and I never really liked the current generations, they all looked unfinished. But this one, man they finally got the design tweaks right and the result is amazing.

Like your reviews! What would be interesting to know is distance between back seat inner isofixes. That very much defines the usability of the back seat for families with more than one child seat.

Thank you for bringing these "forbidden fruits" to those of us in Canada - and wherever else these are made of "unobtainium" . I especially love the A5-esque liftback. Do you think the lack of rear windshield wiper will be problematic in winter climates? Thank you again...Jim

IM not fan of german cars, but i gotta say the design of interior new Superb brings to the table is great, refreshing, and I love that it ditches lot of uneccesary hard angles for simplycity. And this mix looks lovely-wood, leather, not too much piano black and silver. Very soothing look, makes you feel like in cozy house

Great review thanks, I think the screen are becoming too big, I'm actually inclined towards a max of 10 inch screen, over that size I think the screen becomes too big and actually distracts you from the road.

Another excellent review, Thomas. 0:40 Hopefully the rear wiper is still available on the liftback. Škoda Australia had it deleted from the current Octavia liftback, which IMHO was mental. It's not available even as an option (but is in the UK). 2:48 What's with the deletion of the Škoda logo from the rear? It's not even prominent on a few of their websites. Don't they value it anymore? Maybe I've missed the memo. 6:36 Good to have some physical buttons retained, but jamming many functions into the same button seems counterproductive.

Wow! Skoda made it again, this car is simply Superb ;-) I really love the physical knobs for AC, and their little screens inside and multifunctions... So called "premium" brands can learn from Skoda designers how to create an interior for the driver, not just to mount a silly big screen that's cheap to manufacture, but nightmare to use (says the user of 3 series with iDrive 8).
Only one thing that I have a huge problem with - the naked metal on inside of upper door frames (the same in new Passat). In my opinion, that's unacceptable in this class. I don't get it - simple piece of plastic would change the whole impression to a much more premium level! Skoda - why you keep this thing?!
