Dude. The Ultimates rolling up on Kun Lun going toe to toe with Iron fist: Hulk & the 7 immortal weapons was so dank! Ulitmates has been my favorite book a marvel by a landslide. Issue Two had the best mic drop moment though, when Cap literally saves America.... Chávez from the Iron monger was a stoke of genius from Camp.
Ultimate Universe was a big reason why I finally got into comics! Glad there’s so much convo despite it not always being perfect. Did you pick up the One Shot? Pretty badass ending
Tbf, if you remember, Mary Jane in the first issue gave her blessing for Peter to be Spider-Man, so it wouldn't make sense for her to be mad at Peter. It makes sense why she'd be supportive of Peter, considering how in the second volume, we see how Mary Jane defends Peter against her sister, we can see that she genuinely loves Peter for who he is, and sees that him being Spider-Man is fulfilling to him, its making him genuinely happy. Also the 11th issue does explore MJ's concerns for Peter, and from what happens in the 12th issue, Hickman is gonna do a lot more to explore it. From an overall perspective, I understand why Hickman did it the way he did
i get this feedback as i have a friend who’s a really big Spidey fan who told me just as much as you did, and i can only speak for myself here, the reason the way MJ’s written throughout USM doesn’t really always work for me is specifically because i am a newcomer, i haven’t read any 616 Spidey before (don’t worry, i plan to do so someday), and i feel like this ultimate universe, if it’s not meant to strive to be a jumping-on point for new readers, and it very much mostly is and very clearly strives to do so, then it really should consider newcomers at every turn and it feels like they aren’t. the fact that one has to do the homework of reading decades-old Spider-Man comics to understand why the new Ultimate MJ responds to Peter the way she does seems really counterproductive for new readers. not at all accommodating. now, i think it would’ve worked a lot better had there been a clear cut reasoning as to why MJ’s so supportive for her husband’s really dangerous cause, and had that been explored, then for sure it would work because of that provided justification. 12 issues in, we don’t have that. i really love this run, again, because i’m a newcomer, even though JJJ and Ben’s voices are retained, they really work for me because of how well-played their dynamic is. Harry Osborn is my favorite character in this universe as he just seems more and more troubled by each passing issue, especially with his choice for having his father’s voice direct him in his armor. but MJ could use some more fleshing out for sure IMO.
Appreciate the comment! I don't think 11 did a good job laying out her concerns and I don't think the "hey take your time figuring out what you need to, I trust you" is a clear blanket. Like clearly that's in regard to normal human life stuff like if he's thinking of a career change or something. Being a superhero is a BIG deal so even if you give your support at first, I think it's very reasonable to feel more than just taken aback. Glad you're liking the run!
@@moose_kitty I can understand that, though you really don't need to read a bunch of Spider-Man comics to understand MJ. I can agree that MJ should have more focused and it looks like that will happen in the next batch of issues next year, which I'm excited for
For Ultimate Spider-Man i do think patience does play a part, Hickman is obviously writing for the trade and it's fine. I actually enjoyed every issue because they left me with an amazing self contained story within a larger arc. It's not perfect of course but it's as close as it's going to get for me.
That's interesting! I definitely didn't feel like each issue felt self contained but chunks of a larger story that were only seeing bits of. Alternatively I think Ultimates does stand alone stories very well. The trade definitely helps most of these books, though im leary to let that wash away my critical since we ARE getting these in single issues.
i actually really like the monthly stuff for each issue it makes the universe feel a lot more lived in and makes the characters feel like they have lives outside being superheroes. cool video btw.
She's an image consultant, more or less, apparently she did modeling for a few years but didn't like how her agents were presenting her, so she took hold of her public persona, which a lot of people seemed to like, so now she helps other people do the same.
I think the whole new ultimate universe is all about building a new future. It applies to every book and gives creative freedom to the writers and artists. Which I personally love because it's different from every other book on shelves, like it gives more time to progressive ideas and supportive characters.
i think the main thing for peter and mj that is explored in more recent issues is the aspect of wanting to represent the truth with both of them working and owning jobs the repsent that, with peter being a reporter and not a scientist in this universe and mj owning an agency that repsent business that will actually make a difference and not large corporations
Yeah but we also I want to say literally never see them do either of these things. So everything we know about mj is just told to us up until issue 12, where i would've liked to see it showed, you know? I also don't know if I totally agree about their class. Like MJ is very clearly high middle class at the least judging on their occupation and apartment. Feel like not much is being said with her job. But could definitely be wrong, would love to learn more about her going forth!
A great video and a very nuanced take on the Ultimate Universe. I definitely share similar conflicts with Ultimate Spider-Man. Many of the issues are in my favourites of the year, but I also find the pacing super odd. On character motivations, beyond MJ who you mentioned, I'm not even sure I understand Peter and his motivation. Hickman is doing some really interesting world-building, but I'm not quite sure he's building his main cast the same way. But then he'll pull out an issue like #1 or #12 and it's one of the best issues of the year, so I dunno. Also, very mild point, but I see a few American comic commentators get this wrong. Mark Millar is pronounced Mill-er, rather than Mil-lar, despite how it is spelled. English is weird.
Yeah I think after Maker makes his comeback (Please call it Ultimatum it would be so funny) I think it would be best to let go of the monthly pace, you get enough of the experiment and now you can things a different way for the future.
Pacing is weird in these books, feels slow but also too fast to focus on anything so most things feel uneven or unearned. Each book is 5 bucks, so if there are gripes with not feeling the way these stories are told, totally justified. For me, it's giving me stories featuring groups and characters that I care about a little more than the main universe, which has felt stale and plastic for about two years (for me). These feel more substantial, and I trust all the writers to write these stories. Sometimes lmao. #12 of USM seems to be heading in the direction that I think most people have been bracing for, so I'm excited to see if they pull it off.
Great video! I agree with a lot of your points about all the books. I like all of them, but I am struggling with why I'm not as critical with these books. Would I like these books less, if the main Marvel stuff was better? Not sure. I know for sure that I like the writing better in the Ultimate Universe overall.
@jamzilla6990 appreciate it! If you're viking with the books, don't question it, you're not alone! I think the main universe plays a big part in that, but also the books are good at the end of the day
Very interesting that you think UBP is slow because I’ve felt like Hill had hit the ground running alot faster than USM or UXM had and its really kept my attention more than the others has, very interesting perspective
Definitely agree it hit the ground running! But for me after three issues i was looking for something more (which we got in the second volume), especially the thing keeping Tchalla invested beyond the typical BP duties
Lowkey. The only reason I kept Ultimate Spidey is because hickmans on it and I trust him/his avengers wasnt hyped till secret wars so im going to let him cook. If it wasnt hickman i wouldve dropped it
Yeah i don't need to see him struggle.to pay rent still BUT if they're trying to appeal to the specific generation they say they are, that'd be a good start. I know next arc he's jobless though

Same! Every issue has won me over more and more. Just peak conics!
Ultimate Universe was a big reason why I finally got into comics! Glad there’s so much convo despite it not always being perfect. Did you pick up the One Shot? Pretty badass ending
I did! Really exciting development and im excited to see what yhat will mean for the future!

Very true! Which is probably why I lean towards the most progressive one of the bunch. Great point!
i think the main thing for peter and mj that is explored in more recent issues is the aspect of wanting to represent the truth with both of them working and owning jobs the repsent that, with peter being a reporter and not a scientist in this universe and mj owning an agency that repsent business that will actually make a difference and not large corporations

Oops, I always thought i was smart for saying -ar instead of -er haha appreciate the correction!
Agree with you on everything except Ultimate Spider-Man
Fair lol
Yeah I think after Maker makes his comeback (Please call it Ultimatum it would be so funny) I think it would be best to let go of the monthly pace, you get enough of the experiment and now you can things a different way for the future.
Ultimatum would be such a funny choice lol
Heyyyy

Pausing for a bit non of petes stories are even relatable to twenty somethings. When was the last time pete paid rent in a story?
Yeah i don't need to see him struggle.to pay rent still BUT if they're trying to appeal to the specific generation they say they are, that'd be a good start. I know next arc he's jobless though
I just used rent as an arbitrary example. Because rn it’s so expensive that 50% of this gen still lives with their parents.
