    Son in law and I picked up and started on a 87 Dodge D150 4x4 for him last weekend. After 2 and a half days we have it running, all the front brake parts are in so tomorrow it should be kinda drivable, still waiting on the rubber line for the rear brakes. Once it's drivable it will be heading to his house for the little stuff.

    You talk about sand blasting and powder coating things. And than state you cleaned and sprayed painted them. However, for a very reasonable amount you could easily have a media blaster capability AND a hobby type shop powder coater setup and easily do the smaller parts with powder coating. It not only is the best rust protection, but actually fun to do those things as well. Look into such a setup. Not as expensive as you may think... Thumbs Up!

    Great to find this today my friend. You're a really well knowledgeable fella when it comes to these square body Chev trucks. Elizabeth as well. She sure isn't afraid to get right in there whenever she is needed. Neat use for our needle scalers. A trick I can apply to an upcoming project of my own. That sure is one really nice looking body parts technician you have there my friend. Not only that but a squirrel whisperer and pretty too. The girl of your dreams my friend. Do you no longer have the squirrels hanging out there ? It has been quite some time since we have seen anything with them now. Timken have been my go to's for years. Quality bearings and seals for sure. One thing I like to do with new brake cylinders is once they have been blead is to take a syringe full of copper coat never seize and fill them (bleeders) with that. 12 years from now the cylinders are still easily bled. I have always had a chuckle when we take these grimie, dirty componence's apart when they go back together they have to be hospital clean. I sure like your approach to this one my friend. Anything worth doing is worth doing it right eh. Thanks a bunch and I look forward to seeing more of this project you and Elisabeth have taken on.

    Tip for those rears is to put a bit of molyslip into the bearings on assembly, and some in the diff as well. Helps reduce the noise of the diff, and keeps it from wearing much more. Normally i take tube and mix it with a tub of CV joint grease, to make it a higher moly content than it normally is, and the black goop works well in all sorts of uses. Use instead of wheel bearing grease on things like trailer bearings, where it helps a lot.

    • @millwrightrick1
      @millwrightrick1 Год назад +5

      Moly grease is never recommended for bearings. Moly is abrasive and wears down the bearings. Using it for sliding surfaces is fine as it grinds down surface imperfections.

    I’m pretty sure that the outside bearings on all hubs are placed in front the front and not the rear for the outside bearings if the race loosen up the wheel could come off the pressure of the nuts holds them in place so if there’s a problem it can’t go by the nut worth investigating but I not a expert just a observation

  • @whodat90
    @whodat90 Год назад

    I have to respectfully disagree on the panel patching. Like you said, it's always worse than it looks. If I find a rust hole I pretty much take for granted that there's another couple spots that are almost rusted through on the same panel. If I see rust I try to replace the whole panel because I've been bitten before putting a lot of work into something that then rusted through right next so where I repaired. Don't get me wrong, I'm not replacing a roof because there's a hole in a drip channel, there's always little stuff to fix. But on common cheap parts that are known for rusting (chevy rockers, chevy rear fenders) it's been my experience it's cheaper and faster to replace.
    Cool trick with the needle scaler! If you're looking for a cheap but good way to avoid doing bondo and paint on it, TCP Global sells DIY 2 part spray on bedliner kits for pretty cheap, and it's available in a lot of colors. Theirs is harder than the rubber LineX types, sticks to nearly anything, and covers a world of sins. The texture is entirely up to you, as is the thickness applied. I did the lower half of my SUV because my kids drive it, and it's much easier to get another $50 quart of bedliner and respray a bumper or quarter-panel than it is trying to slick it out and have it repainted.
